Free Safety Classes The Suffolk County Police Department is again offering its free “Crash Course in Crash Avoidance” classes for teen drivers between the ages of 16 and 19. Designed to supplement training already learned from DMV, defensive driving and driver education programs, this 2-hour course teaches new drivers how to anticipate and avoid dangerous road
situations. Each session features a short classroom lecture, followed by a live demonstration on the Emergency Vehicles Operations Course (EVOC). There are 10 different sessions to choose from between August 7th and 11th, all taught at the Suffolk Police Academy, 110 Old Country Road in Westhampton. Morning

Fields to be Renamed On August 1st, the Town of Brookhaven will unveil a new sign at Martha Avenue Park in Bellport, naming the ball fields in honor of late civic leader Tony Gazzola. Mr. Gazzola, who passed away in 2015, was the founder of the South Country Community Conference and the man most responsible for the Town creating Martha
Avenue Park. He also worked with the Town to establish the Safe Summer Youth Program at the park in the 1990s. The 6:30 p.m. unveiling will be hosted by Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio. It will be held during the Suffolk County Police Department’s “National
Night Out,” a program designed to heighten crime and drug awareness; generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts; strengthen neighborhood spirit and to help neighborhoods organize and fight back. The program runs from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and is co-hosted by the Town of Brookhaven and the
Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance, Inc. Councilman Loguercio will also participate in the evening’s “3 On 3” basketball tournament for children from the Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport Area. Supervisor Romaine said, “Tony’s legacy looms large in the East PatchogueBellport community and
it is fitting that we honor him in this way. The people who use the fields should know that this park is there because of his efforts.” Councilman Loguercio said, “I am very proud to have the opportunity to join Tony’s family and friends as we recognize all he did to make this community a better place to live. I encourage all those who
have been touched by his ‘can-do’ spirit to celebrate his life with us.”

New drivers can opt to park in spaces that have plenty of room or allow for pulling out (rather than backing out). This can improve visibility and reduce the risk of hitting other vehicles. Driving is exciting for newly licensed teens. but parents must emphasize the importance of defensive driving to their young drivers.

entire stories be derived from the briefest instant. It’s all in the approach. Just as photographs capture the visual of a moment for posterity, words capture the pure essence behind it. They exist separately, and are at once complementary. Perhaps that is the source of my fascination with both. To be able to elicit an emotion whether positive, negative or somewhere in between - is always the ultimate goal. To achieve that is the greatest sign of success for anyone in the arts. The process to reach that level is a never-ending one, to be continuously tweaked and modified in the quest for perfection, for meaning. May we all find it someday.
During the July 11th Board of Education reorganization meeting, the Connetquot Central School District honored and paid tribute to a highlydedicated member of the Connetquot community, Lorraine Adamec Mays, and presented her with an honorary high school diploma. A lifelong Bohemia
resident, Mrs. Mays attended the original school house building, and graduated eighth grade under the principal of the time, Mr. John Pearl. Being that Oakdale and Bohemia residents attended Sayville High School at that time, she completed three and a half years at SHS and decided to pursue other interests at the Wilfred
Academy School in New York City toward a cosmetology career. Additionally, Mrs. Mays currently serves on the Bohemia Historical Society Board of Directors, and is considered an authority on local history, as she is featured in multiple videos at the Connetquot Public Library about the founding of Bohemia.

Phase I Approved Phase I of the Heartland Town Square development project was approved by the Islip Town Board today, marking the culmination of years of research and public comment covering all aspects of the proposal. The vote follows a public hearing held in April, where 144 people signed up to speak, including nearly 1,700 comments submitted via the Town’s website. “This project has been investigated from every possible vantage point, and the Board believes that the Heartland development represents an opportunity
for our Town and for Long Island,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “No other project in the Town’s history has faced the scrutiny that has been imposed upon Heartland, and part of that has been providing opportunities for public comment throughout the past few years at critical junctures.” “We would like to thank the Islip Town Supervisor and the Town Board, for all of their hard work and dedication in approving our application. We look forward to working with the Town to build this exciting development, which will set the standard as a place
where both our young adults and empty nesters will be able to live, work and play in one place,” said the project’s developer, Jerry Wolkoff. In the months after the Public Hearing, the Town has made documents available outlining the Heartland proposal in order to give residents as much information as possible. Residents can continue to view these documents by visiting the Town’s website at www.islipny.com. Phase I of the plan involves developing 113 acres of the Pilgrim State property into a mixed-use area that includes
residential, retail, and office facilities. Phase I, and all future development at the site, will continue to be subject to stringent environmental review and oversight by multiple agencies. Town of Islip officials initiated unprecedented community outreach through all social media platforms including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, e-mail, written communication and the Town’s website. A public informational meeting was conducted for the benefit of the Town Board and for the public, to listen to an extensive presentation by the Town’s
Planning Commissioner and department staff, illustrating the scope of the Heartland project and the recommendations of the Town’s Planning Board. The environmental review process culminated with the unanimous adoption of a finding statement by the Town Board back in November 17th, 2014. The Town Planning Board then held a public hearing on April 16th, 2015 and, after much review, adopted its recommendation August 18th, 2016. By law, the application was then required to be reviewed by the Suffolk County Planning
Commission, which also held a public hearing on January 4, and continued on February 1 of 2017, when the County Planning Commission adopted a resolution approving the application. The Town Board public hearing for the Change of Zone was held on April 26th, 2017, at which time the public hearing was closed and the board reserved decision. After much consultation and review with the planning commissioner and staff, the board meeting for the vote on the project was scheduled for Tuesday, July 18th at 6 p.m.

On Saturday, July 15th, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine presented a proclamation to Pastor Norbert Folwaczny of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Patchogue in honor of the 40th anniversary of his ordination. Pastor Folwaczny has been with Emanuel Lutheran for 11 years. On June 12th, 1977
Pastor Folwaczny was ordained in his home-town church of Gethsemane Lutheran in Buffalo. He has served several congregations over the course of the past 40 years, including Prince of Peace Lutheran in Ohio, Calvary Lutheran in Baltimore, St. Mark Lutheran in North Tonawanda, NY, Pilgrim / St. Paul Lutheran in Lakewood, OH, and
his current pastorate at Emanuel Lutheran in Patchogue. Pastor Folwaczny is beloved by the community for his sense of humor, his love of food and his commitment to Christian education. He has also been an ongoing member of the Patchogue Kiwanis Club.
The Connetquot Central School District proudly welcomed veteran educators Jill Lahey and Laura Kimball as the new principals of Cherokee Street Elementary School and Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, respectively, this July. Ms. Lahey comes to Connetquot most recently from the Central Islip School District, where she assumed the role of administrator for English Language Arts K-12. During her time in this position, she supervised literacy/math coaches, AIS teachers and library media specialists. Prior to this role, Ms. Lahey was the assistant principal at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown School District, where she built a leadership
team by developing an action plan helping to create a positive school culture. Additionally, she shared best practices by conducting workshops on differentiated instruction and the “growth mindset.” Ms. Lahey holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in special education from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus and a professional diploma in educational administration from Dowling College. Ms. Kimball most recently worked for the New York City Department of Education, serving as the assistant principal of P.S. 89Q Elmhurst School for the past 10 years. While in this position, she served as the lead administrator of the school’s Gleane
Academy, which contains more than 600 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Additionally, she developed and supervised art enrichment programs, including visual arts, instrumental music (strings) and drama. She is also an accomplished literacy coach, having worked for multiple years to provide instructional support for teachers by modeling lessons, creating lab sites, proving curriculum resources and leading unit-planning sessions. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and a Master of Science degree in education from CUNY Queens College and an advanced certificate in educational administration from the College of Saint Rose.
