FUNDRAISER TO STRIKE OUT CANCER - Sayville Varsity Softball held its Annual Strike Out Cancer Game which raised funds for local families battling cancer. Thanks to the generosity of those who attended, Sayville enjoyed a win-win event, both with the final score of 16-4 and with the donations from the community. “The Booster Club sold T-shirts,” explained it’s President Jennifer Kinahan. “Also, we collected $125.00 from both the Sayville and Commack fans during the game and that money will be donated to Memorial Sloan Kettering on behalf of both teams.”

BOE Welcomes New Members The Bayport-Blue Point School District Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 1, when two new members were welcomed to the board. Trustees Jason Borowski and John Kroog were sworn in for the beginning of their three-year terms, and the board elected returning members Michael Miller and Brian Johnson as president and vice president, respectively. Additionally, the board of education welcomed incoming Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Jacob Lurie as the board of education student delegate for the 2019-20 school year.

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. There are many ways that you can become involved with RTLI, whether that be individually or as a company! Corporate sponsors are a huge help to the organization and it can benefit your company greatly as well. Corporate sponsors are companies that make the decision to fund a RTLI project for someone in need. Their employees will be able to participate in hands on work with the project they sponsor so their company can

have the chance to take part in a team building and community leadership opportunity. When they become a corporate sponsor, companies will get to see immediate positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled individual or a family in need, while demonstrating their company’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life right here on Long Island. These sponsors will also get acknowledged on the RTLI website, in their quarterly newsletter and on social media. Additionally, if you are a business professional and are interested in getting involved with Rebuilding Together Long Island, the opportunity is available. RTLI is now interviewing business professionals to become an integral part of their Advisory Board and help advance their mission, whether it be through financial contributions, in-kind donations, networking capabilities or another way.

Dr. Carreau will be practicing at 12 East 86th Street, Central Park. “I wanted to join a large, well-respected group practice,” said Dr. Carreau. “I will bring expertise in the use of immunotherapy.” Medicine has been Dr. Carreau’s passion and inspired her to pursue it. “I was always interested in science and I wanted to build a career in which I could make a difference in people’s lives every day,” said Dr. Carreau. Dr. Carreau’s research in both Hodgkin’s and Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients included leading a team of investigators across 17 centers in the US and Canada. Her research could allow patients who were previously considered transplant-ineligible to become candidates for the procedure, resulting in

program, students learned why it is important to reduce, reuse and recycle items they use each day. During the workshop, students were challenged to select whether an item should be composted, reused or recycled. Students also learned how to make recycled paper by adding shredded paper and water

to a blender to create paper pulp. Students pressed the water from the paper pulp and let it dry to create their very own recycled paper. The visit served as a timely addition to the first grade project-based learning initiative in which students learn ways to reuse and recycle materials to benefit the environment.

Alfredo Torres, MD Joins NYCBS

Alfredo Torres, MD has joined the team of medical oncologists at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists. Dr. Torres will be practicing at our Port Jefferson, Setauket, and Smithtown locations. Dr. Torres is a third generation physician in his family and knew early on, that medicine was his passion. A native of Venezuela, Dr. Torres credits the skills he has developed to limited access to medical resources. “I grew up in a country filled with opportunities and hope. He believes that each patient and diagnosis is different, and providing holistic support is needed for diagnosis and treatment. While residing in

Venezuela, Dr. Torres was a volunteer for the Funcamama-Breast Cancer Foundation and Fundación de Niños con VIH. In the US, Dr. Torres completed his residency and fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was awarded “best poster presentation” of ACP Journal club presentations. 25 at Connetquot High School. At this year’s joyous celebration, held at the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center at Connetquot High School, more than 200 Ronkonkoma Middle School students received their certificates to

the applause of proud family members. Interim Principal Joseph Licato congratulated the Class of 2019 and their parents, and wished them good health, happiness and success in all they do. “I urge you to dream big, and work hard to make those dreams come

true,” he said. Assistant Principal Wayne Myers added his congratulations for the graduates as well, and expressed his gratitude toward their dedicated parents. Attending dignitaries added their own congratulations and assisted, along with
