entire class of 2021, as Haas remarked that each and every member of the graduating class has fit this criteria. Class salutatorian Cecily Phua then delivered the salutatory address, a thoughtful speech that focused on the importance of striking a balance in one’s academic and personal life. This was followed by the valedictory address, in which valedictorian Lindsay Lessing spoke eloquently about the distinction between “falling” and “failing.” Principal Haas then returned to the stage to recognize the students who had earned honor medallions, and to deliver special recognitions. This category included those who have chosen to serve our country in a branch of the U.S. Military upon graduation, which received

a standing ovation from the crowd. Prior to the individual presentation of their diplomas, senior members of the BayportBlue Point High School chorus then performed a moving rendition of “Vienna” by Billy Joel, instilling a palpable sense of nostalgia. At the conclusion of the ceremony, class president Madison Coffey addressed her peers led them in moving their tassels from the right to the left, officially signifying their conferral of their high school degrees. On June 25, 194 students closed the chapter on their high school careers as they graduated from BayportBlue Point High School. Proud family and friends joined the district’s board of education, administration and staff on the school football field to witness the commencement of the class of 2021. The ceremony began with the delivery of congratulatory addresses by principal Robert Haas, board of education president Michael Miller, and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy P. Hearney. Principal Haas then presented the Alumni Loyalty Award, which is traditionally given to one graduating senior who shows exceptional character throughout his or her high school career. Protect Your Parks: 4 Ways To Keep Facilities Clean Parks have long been popular places to congregate. Facilities vary, but many parks offer various amenities — from walking or biking trails to dog runs to fitness areas. And while thousands of individuals and families visit parks each

year, when the COVID-19 pandemic was declared in early 2020, parks provided an escape for those who were unable to gather at indoor recreational facilities. Even though parks offered safe places to have fun outdoors when other options were limited, the pandemic affected the way the parks were managed due to budget cuts and reduced staff. This, coupled with a surge in visitors that continues today, only underscores the importance of all outdoor enthusiasts doing what they can to keep parks clean. The following are four effective strategies for individuals to keep parks clean. 1. Leave no trace According to National Geographic, Leave No Trace is a set of environmental ethics for interacting with the great outdoors. It follows guidelines for using parks in thoughtful, sustainable ways. In addition to carry in/carry out

policies for belongings and trash, Leave No Trace components involve making an effort not to disturb and plants and animals, hiking in appropriate areas, and using care when camping. More information about the Leave No Trace movement is available at https://lnt.org. 2. Manage pet waste The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that, in the United States, pet dogs produce more than eight billion pounds of feces each year, which equates to three-quarters of a pound per dog every day. Dog waste can contain bacteria and even cryptosporidium, a parasite that infects humans. Even though animal waste is organic, leaving it alone instead of picking it up can lead to environmental issues, including negative effects on local water supplies. It also smells bad and attracts flies and vermin. It’s important

for park visitors to pick up after their companion animals. 3. Reduce waste It can take roughly 450 years for a plastic water bottle to biodegrade. Even if they finally break down, bottles made from polyethylene terephalate (PET) can leave toxins in the soil and threaten fresh water. Use a reusable bottle instead of a single-use alternative when visiting the park. If plastic bottles must be used, be sure to place them in recycling containers around the park. 4. Volunteer Individuals can volunteer to pick up trash at their local parks. Various conservation groups and organizations organize trash pick-up events each year. Increased usage of parks means the potential for more trash and damage. Everyone can do his or her part to keep parks clean and enjoyable.

“A Bright Spot on a Crazy Year,” Sayville JV Baseball Team Makes History

This was a very special season for the Junior Varsity Baseball team which went undefeated for the first time in team history. Led by brothers Jack and Thomas Nielsen as coaches, the team finished with an overall record of 170. Sayville was an offensive powerhouse, scoring 180 runs throughout the season. Supported

by strong pitching and defense, the team only gave up a total of 18 runs on the season. It was an absolute team effort, with everyone on the team working hard and contributing. “My brother and I had an absolute blast with this group boys,” said Head Coach Jack Nielsen, “and it was a great experience to see them work so hard,

The car serves as a reminder to students to drive safely. The junk car was on

display in front of the school to show students the consequences of driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, as well as the dangers of driving while distracted by texting or talking on cell phones. Bellport High School Honors The Class Of 2021’s Brightest Bellport High School’s top seniors were recognized during the annual senior awards ceremony, held in the gymnasium on June 7. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the former senior awards format was divided alphabetically into three separate assemblies to allow for parents to attend. Additionally, the ceremony was livestreamed via a link posted to the high school webpage, Grade 12 Google Classroom and the Senior Awards and Recognition Google Classroom. In all, 138 awards were

presented to the Class of 2021’s highest achieving students who received community scholarships, local and regional recognitions, department honors, military honors, student government recognitions and athletic awards. During his opening address, Class President David Carlson described his classmates as resilient individuals who learned to adapt to the many challenges they faced through the pandemic. “Life will constantly throw curveballs at you. Life

will constantly keep you guessing,” David said. “We’ve been through COVID, so I can guarantee you can get through much more.” Principal Timothy Hogan said he was proud of the individuals who are receiving “special and meaningful awards.” He called each student to the podium as their photo and list of recognitions flashed on a screen. Each of the students received a senior tote bag, containing the honors they received, and copies of the senior awards programs.

9th Graders Excel At The 2021 World Series Of Youth Lacrosse Tournament Congratulations to Connetquot’s Carson Turissini and Brandon Perticone for having participated in the 2021 World Series of Youth Lacrosse (WSYL) Tournament which was held July 1-3 at the Maryland SoccerPlex Stadium. Carson and Brandon just ‘moved up’ from their respective middle schools, and will be 9th graders at Connetquot High School in the Fall. Twenty-four of the best 14U teams from

across the country, and select international clubs, participated in the 2021 tournament, and while Carson and Brandon, played for rival teams, they were the top scorers for their respective teams during the 3-day tournament. Scoring 8 goals apiece, the boys ranked among the top 10% of scorers for this year’s tournament The boys play ‘travel’ lacrosse throughout the summer, and the WSYL is considered the pinnacle of youth lacrosse before

the youngsters start their high school careers. Carson and Brandon have been teammates since kindergarten, and Connetquot’s very successful lacrosse community is anxious to have the boys join the program. Midfielders, Carson Turissini and Brandon Perticone were also nominated for the tournament’s ‘All World’ team! Congratulations to Carson, Brandon and their proud families!
