GARDEN TOUR HELD - On Saturday, July 8th, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco attended the 17th annual Garden Tour sponsored by the Patchogue Garden Club in the Community Garden in Patchogue with his wife Laura, and his children, Alma Rosa, Patrick and Bodhi. Every July, local gardeners open their houses for the public to admire the beauty of their work. Proceeds are used to maintain the gardens all around our community.

Miss Isabella Maya Rese, age 9, has been chosen as a State Finalist in the National American Miss New York Pageant to be held August 11th and 12th at the beautiful Hyatt in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The pageant is held for girls ages four through eighteen in five different age divisions. The newly crowned Miss Junior Pre-Teen New York will receive a $1,000 cash award, the official crown and banner, a bouquet of roses, and air transportation to compete in the national pageant at Disneyland in California. She will also tour Hollywood. She has

the chance to represent the great state of New York for the entire year. Contestants will compete in four overall categories including Formal Wear Modeling, Personal Introduction, Interview and Community Service Project. National American Miss also offers optional contests such as Top Model Search, Talent, Actress, and so much more! National American Miss is dedicated to celebrating America’s greatness and encouraging its future leaders. SAILORS MONUMENT DEDICATED - On Wednesday, July 12th, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco attended a ceremony to dedicate a memorial to the sailors who lost their lives at sea, at the Lakeview Cemetery in Patchogue. Suffolk County gave $5,000 in Historic Services grant funding to the Cemetery Restoration Committee of Patchogue to restore the memorial. Calarco presented a Proclamation to the members of the Committee at the dedication to thank them for their work to preserve this important part of Patchogue’s history.

The End. {Part II} Approximately 5 hours later… Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! CONTEST WINNERS - On Friday, July 7th, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco presented Certificates of Recognition to the winners of the “Middle School Kids Go to College” contest. The winners were recognized for their exceptional projects studying the varying environmental impacts certain actions and substances have on the Long Island ecosystem, particularly pertaining to water sources and other related subject matters. All of this year’s winners were students of the Patchogue-Medford School District.

Brookhaven Grad John Edwin Rose of Brookhaven recently graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at Kings Point. Rose earned a Bachelor of Science degree and an officer’s commission in the U.S. armed forces. He also earned a Merchant Marine officer license, qualifying him to serve as an officer on any ship in the U.S. flag merchant marine. The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a federal service academy

that educates and graduates licensed Merchant Marine officers. In addition to the rigorous academic and physical requirements for admission, applicants must be nominated by their Congressman or Senator. All USMMA graduates earn both a B.S. degree and a merchant marine license and incur an obligation to serve the United States. The U.S. Flag Merchant Marine – manned by U.S. merchant mariners – is essential for securing the country’s commerce in

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Pink AidLI Chapter. This grant helps fund the salary of a bilingual social worker who provides counseling, patient navigation and support services at Nassau University Medical Center and the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to uninsured and underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients diagnosed with breast cancer. The grant also allows the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program to support non-medical emergent needs for uninsured or underinsured Nassau and Suffolk County patients

and their families while undergoing treatment and/or post-operative care for breast cancer. These services include transportation to and from treatment, wigs and other prosthesis, grocery cards and assistance with household bills. “Pink Aid is proud to support the important assistance offered by Adelphi’s Breast Cancer Program and the bilingual social work and navigation services they provide. We are so pleased that our funding will allow critical support to reach even more women on Long Island,” says Ali Mitchell, the president of Pink Aid Long Island. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer

Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information for breast cancer patients, professionals and the community. The hotline can be reached at 800.877.8077. Honor Flight Long Island Hello Friends of Honor Flight Long Island! The hope is by now you are familiar with the website www. honorflightlongisland.org It’s your go-to site for Guardian and Veteran applications which are available to print and share, especially now that they’re recruiting Korean War veterans for their

flights. They’re still taking WWII veterans of course! They also post photos and videos from each flight and let you know when the next flight is scheduled on the website. They try to make it easy to use, particularly the donations pages! Help yourself to the photos. They’re free to download. Copy as many as you’d like for yourself or

friends and family. The May 6th Honor Flight had 20 WWII veterans and 30 Korean veterans on board. Those photos and videos are available now on the HFLI website. The Reunion for those May 6th veterans, their guardians, friends and family members is being hosted by the American Airpower Museum on Saturday,

August 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reunion announcement and details for that event were sent to those participants. The next Honor Flight is scheduled on September 23rd. Eligible veterans will receive the flight information very soon. They have a waiting list, mostly Korean veterans, but they will certainly

make room for any WWII veterans who want to go. Honor Flight continues to look for financial assistance from philanthropists, foundations and those who are in a position to provide monetary support for the cause. They are truly grateful for the strong support that has kept them flying so far. They could
