Camp Invention connected and controlled. On June 28th, parents and siblings were invited by program director Lisa Manzo to marvel at the efforts the students put into the innovative projects they had been working on during the week. Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized, nonprofit elementary enrichment program backed by the National Inventors Hall of Fame. During the past 40 years, and in partnership with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, this program has encouraged nearly two million children, teachers,
parents, college students and independent inventors across the country to explore science, technology and their own innate creativity, inventiveness and entrepreneurial spirit. The original program was established in 1990 and has since spread to 49 states. The Camp Invention program enhances a child’s ability to learn through teamwork and subject-immersion while cultivating a new appreciation for discovery through fun-filled activities.

If there is one thing we have all learned throughout our lives, it is that there are only so many aspects within our control; and even those few are questionable, at best. We can go through each day with a clear picture as to what we would like our life to be, but the reality is that this is the only true reality we know. The rest is mere wistfulness. This is why it is so important to appreciate each and every moment, those people we are fortunate to have in our lives, and to be grateful for the small miracles which surround us always. It’s difficult, to be sure, when you feel overwhelmed by life and whatever obstacles it might throw your way; but it takes such a minimal effort to stop
for a moment and appreciate a sunrise, a sunset, a butterfly, a blossom … anything, really. My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the flesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.
Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

The Connetquot Central School District once again hosted the nationally recognized “Camp Invention” program from June 25th-28th at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, as more than 100 students in grades one through six took part in a program of exploration, inspiration and creativity. Programs such as the “Optibot,” “Robotic Pet Vet,” “Mod My Mini Mansion” and “Stick To It” challenged the campers to think outside the box to solve problems and use the internet to reveal how these devices are

The 2018 Connetquot High School Commencement Ceremony was held on June 21st under a clear sky and well-attended crowd in support of the hundreds of accomplished students taking their first steps toward their post-high school futures. After being introduced to the tune of “Pomp and Circumstance” by the Connetquot High School band, a display of colors from the Bohemia Fire Department Color Guard and a lovely rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner” by the Connetquot High School Senior chorus, Principal Kenneth J. Costa welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their continued support of the graduating class and wished the students a bright and prosperous future. Afterward, the top 25 students were recognized and personally congratulated by Mr. Costa and 12th-grade Assistant Principal Michael Moran for their outstanding accomplishments. “Someone once told me to find the joy is a journey, and I’d like to believe that life is just that,” said Class of 2018 salutatorian Giavana Prucha during her moving speech. “Whatever journey you may be on, short or long, challenging or effortless, travel with the intention to gain more than your set goals.” Additionally, Class of

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Lunch will be provided after the clean up, courtesy of Port Diver. If you are interested in attending, please RSVP to

CSLI also runs programs for camps, schools and any other interested groups that include activities such as shellfish hatchery tours, marine life identification, plankton identification under microscopes, use of the interaction presentations at the Marine Stewardship Education Center and touch tank presentations. There are plenty of ways that you can become involved with Coastal Steward Long Island. They are always looking for more volunteers and are currently looking for people to help in the following areas: beach cleanups, planting oysters, data collection, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work. A sea of successful students – the graduating Class of 2018 – blanketed the football field at Sachem High School East as they prepared to receive their diplomas as part of the annual commencement ceremony celebrating the momentous milestone. The ceremony began with the Pledge of Allegiance, led by the graduates who will be entering a branch of the armed services, and a warm welcome from Sachem High School East Principal Louis Antonetti, who reflected on the value of the challenging yet rewarding experiences the graduates will encounter in life. “With fear comes a discomfort level that will force you to see what you are made of,” Antonetti said. “So, graduates, please savor the obstacles that

Mad Science Hiawatha Elementary School fourth- and fifthgrade students in the Sachem Central School District explored the many wonders of science by creating crafty chemical concoctions during a workshop presented by Mad Science. With the help of guest speaker Xenon Zach, students took part in experiments that tested different properties of chemicals. They learned about substances that
are hydrophilic and are attracted to water as well as substances that are hydrophobic and repel water. Student groups participated in an experiment that showcased the hydrophobic properties of certain chemicals by pouring hydrophobic sand on top of water and gently putting their finger into the sand layer without getting wet. As part of an additional experiment highlighting the unique properties of various
Colonial Fashion chemicals, students created colorful art using shaving cream and water-based paints. Shaving cream is both a hydrophobic and hydrophilic substance that absorbed and rejected the various colors that were then swirled in circles, creating vibrant artwork. Throughout the activity Xenon shared helpful tips with students so that they can recreate similar experiments at home with everyday household items
An assortment of outfits from long ago graced the improvised runway at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District during a fashion show that depicted a number of prominent styles from the colonial period in America. Fourth-grade students navigated the cafeteria
runway showing off their colonial outfits to classmates and family members while students read aloud explanations of what each student wore. A number of popular accessories from the time period were highlighted, including aprons, bonnets, bifocal glasses, straw hats, suspenders and wicker baskets. In addition,
multiple students dressed in outfits that represented important jobs during the time period such as blacksmiths, carpenters and farmers. As part of the curriculum unit on colonial life, the activity served as an excellent visual representation of fashion during an important time in American history.

and Matthew Seery were sworn in for the beginning of their three-year terms, and the board elected returning members Michael Miller and Brian Johnson as president and vice president, respectively.
Additionally, the board of education welcomed incoming Bayport-Blue Point High School senior Matthew Nolan as the board of education student delegate for the 2018-2019 school year.

Ciaran, who holds dual-citizenship due to his father being born in
Ireland, was asked to join the Irish national team following an outstanding career playing for the Connetquot High School varsity baseball team. Ciaran averaged .400 at the plate this season, and had a 3-3 record pitching for the team as well. He split his time on the field between playing third base and pitching. The Irish national

Selected to Play team will play four games to qualify for the championship round of the European tournament. Ciaran is expected to pitch on July 10 against the Lithuanian baseball team. While attending, the Irish national team is expected to play a schedule which will include games against Spain, Lithuania, Germany and Italy. The week’s results will determine the playoff schedule which may also include teams representing Ukraine, France, Netherlands, Great Britain and the Czech Republic. Ciaran was a Suffolk County All-League selection for the Connetquot High School varsity baseball team that finished this past season in the semifinals of the Suffolk County Championship Tournament. He will be playing baseball at Farmingdale State College this fall. The district congratulates Ciaran on this accomplishment.

To review lessons taught throughout the school year in an exciting way, seventhgrade math students at Samoset Middle School in the Sachem Central School District participated in hands-on activities as part of the Empower program. The initiative
incorporates engaging, standards-based math fluency activities that implement daily math practices. Students worked collaboratively in groups, rotating through multiple stations utilizing manipulatives such as dice, a deck of cards and
dominoes to answer a plethora of math questions. The wide-ranging activities reinforced a strong understanding of the concepts students would encounter on the day of the final.
