The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island (RTLI) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that is an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. RTLI works yearround with their focus on keeping people safe in their home, as well as making sure that they have safe access into their home. While most of their clients are elderly, they will help anyone who meets their income guidelines and classify as low-income with limited assets. Additionally, they have a special program to help our deserving veterans in need. As a way to thank them for their service, they created the Hero Home Improvement Program, which aligns with their mission of repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.
Does your home have working smoke alarms, or have you removed the batteries because they were old and “chirping”? Not to worry, RTLI has batteries with a 10-year life span. Do you need grab bars to help eliminate nasty falls and a dreaded costly hospitalization? No problem, they’ll take care of it. Do you need a wheelchair ramp so that you can leave your home safely? RTLI can
You may be wondering how this organization does all of this for free. Some of their program funds come through grants and corporations, but some also come from everyday people like you and me. RTLI does not receive government funding. They do so much for the community and because they are an organization of volunteers, they can do a lot with a little and make every dollar count. If you would like to make a donation to this organization you can do so by sending it to: Rebuilding Together Long Island, 208 Route 109, Suite 204, Farmingdale, NY 11735 or by a credit card at rebuildingtogetherlongisland. org/make-a-donation. Additionally, they are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills because training is available. (All volunteers must be at least 18 years old.) They are also looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

Their President Stella Hendrickson relates calling their organization for help to calling a neighbor. She mentioned, “Calling Rebuilding Together Long Island for help is like calling that person in your neighborhood that we all wish we had. You know the one...the one who is always working around his house and yard and seems to know how to take care of all the many little things that need to be taken care before they turn into major issues. That’s who the volunteers of RTLI are. They are your neighbors, retired from all walks of life and looking to help others and the communities of Long Island be safer and better. Some were teachers and principals, some engineers, some were IT professionals. They are a mixture of professions, but they all have one common goal, which is to help those in need.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is the recipient of a $115,142 grant from the Ike, Molly & Steven Elias Foundation of the Jewish Communal Fund. The funds will be applied for a state-of-the-art watering system for the horses. The organization has been a loyal supporter of Pal-O-Mine, with its principals previously donating to such program as its Adopt-A-Rider program, their annual golf outing and the overall building expansion. “This very generous donation will fulfill a need at Pal-O-Mine vital to the wellbeing of our equine teachers,” said Pal-O-Mine CEO Lisa Gatti. “Through the support

Honoring The Class Of 2019
Smiles and cheers from family and friends welcomed a distinguished group of graduating seniors on June 28 to the Sachem High School North commencement ceremony honoring the Class of 2019 and celebrating their plentiful accomplishments. As “Pomp and Circumstance” carried through the air, the excited graduates took the field at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium for the last time as students of the Sachem Central School District. The
commencement exercises then began with the national anthem performed by the Sachem North Symphonic Choir Seniors, conducted by Cara Caliendo. Principal Patti Trombetta began her address by recognizing several students who would be entering the armed services following graduation. As she continued, her address gracefully outlined the wishes she had for the Class of 2019 as they move into the future.
“I wish you always play hard, take chances, give everything and have no regrets,” she said. “Every day take a moment to just take it in. You owe it to yourself to make the most of every moment.” Assistant Principal Coleen Flanagan then presented the top 25 academic students with medals, ending with salutatorian Miguel Maramara and then welcoming valedictorian Amy De Lury to the stage to address her fellow graduates in a speech that
highlighted the unique nature of the school community they shared. “I look at the Class of 2019 and I see so many differences between us – whether it be religion, beliefs, culture, interests or career paths,” she said. “In a class of 527 seniors, there are so many differences between us. Yet I can see similar traits between all of us as well – our kindness, our achievements, our sense of humor and our acceptance of what’s to come. And then
there is a factor that united us all – the Sachem community.” Presenting the Class of 2019 was Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham, whose speech empowered students to embrace the changes that lie ahead. “By adapting to the changes ahead of you, being malleable, you will be better prepared to face and overcome challenges,” he said. “Life after Sachem schools is going to present new, exciting and tough challenges to each of you.
I hope that you are better prepared to face these challenges as a result of your experiences here in Sachem, and I hope you are ready to change!” After the final diplomas were presented, cheers echoed across the field as students propelled their caps to the sky, exiting the field as alumni of the Sachem Central School District.
Bellport High School valedictorian Tyler Brock was among Suffolk County’s highestachieving students from the Class of 2019 who were honored by school district superintendents, administrators and parents during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 25th annual Valedictorian’s Luncheon, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on May 30.
The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by Elwood School District’s John H. Glenn High School Chamber Strings under the baton of Karen Gellert. Congratulating the students on their hard work and achievements were Dr. Kenneth Bossert, SCCSA president and Elwood School District superintendent of schools; Dr. Ronald Masera,
SCSSA vice president and RemsenburgSpeonk School District superintendent of Schools; Dr. Yiendhy Farrelly, SCSSA secretary and West Babylon School District superintendent of schools; and Bernadette Burns, SCSSA president-elect and West Islip School District superintendent of schools. Dr. Bossert told the valedictorians that they possess the many attributes
of Elwood School District’s mascot, a knight, in that they have demonstrated humility, honor, sacrifice, faithfulness, courage and grace. “Today, we are all knights,” he said. During the keynote address, Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini told parents and educators that education is vital to the security of our communities and nation and that by navigating
the hard issues they empower students. To the valedictorians, he said that people often told him he would fail, but that he did not allow others to tell him he could not do something. “Your goals and plans may change over time, but think how to best serve the community,” Mr. Sini said. “This will happen if you do something you love.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive
a certificate and gift of recognition. Accompanied by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani and Principal Timothy Hogan, Tyler was called to the podium where he was introduced and his intent to study engineering at Burnett Honors College at the University of Central Florida was announced.

Students Move On Up Held in the school’s colorfully decorated gymnasium, family, friends and invited guests recently attended John Pearl Elementary School’s moving up day celebration, as the students begin to look forward to their middle school careers at OakdaleBohemia Middle School. Students were introduced and presented with certificates representing the successful completion of their elementary school requirements, along with a
number of special awards as well. Each student also continued a unique tradition where they addressed the audience and talked about their future plans, along with their confidence in achieving those goals. John Pearl Elementary School Principal Susan White took to the microphone to congratulate the students and their proud family members, while celebrating their hard work and accomplishments
along the way. On this special day, the pride of the assembled members of the students’ families and friends was evident in the recognition of what the young students had accomplished thus far. Members of the school’s PTA, teaching staff, and the attending family and friends joined Ms. White in congratulating the students, and wished them all a happy and safe summer vacation.
