school lunch programs, the summer can cause worry, stress and empty stomachs.” According to Feeding America, the nation’s leading domestic hungerrelief organization, 62 percent of client households with children under the age of 18 reported participating in the National School Lunch Program, but only 14 percent reported having a child participate in a summer feeding program that provides free food when school is out. “This underscores the critical importance of summer feeding programs, while emphasizing the need for increased awareness of these vital programs,” said Ms. Shubin Dresner. Island Harvest’s SFSP is administered by the Food and Nutrition Service, an agency of the U.S. Department of

Agriculture through the New York State Department of Education. At the local level, the program is managed by USDAapproved sponsors like Island Harvest. Under the SFSP, lunch meals will be provided to all children 18 years and under without charge at designated sites. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, gender, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Responding to an increased demand to supply supplemental food to children who rely on school lunch programs, but may not get enough to eat when school is in summer recess, Island Harvest Food Bank today announced that it has expanded its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) to 50 sites across Long Island. Last year the SFSP served 38,500 meals to 2,215 children through 28 sites in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This year, more than 75,000 meals are expected to be served to approximately 3,500 children participating in the program. “Summertime should be a carefree, fun and relaxing time for all children,” said Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO, Island Harvest. “Sadly, for many children who rely on

June 30th, 2014 marked the beginning of Fresh Air summer experiences for thousands of innercity children and their volunteer host families as The Fresh Air Fund kicked off its 138th summer of serving New York City children. By volunteering as a host family in Suffolk County, you can share the pure joys of summer with a Fresh Air child in your own backyard! The Fresh Air Fund is currently seeking more families to give inner-city children a Fresh Air experience this summer. Fresh Air summers are filled with children running barefoot through the grass, gazing at starfilled skies or swimming for the first time. Each summer, over 4,000 inner-city children visit suburban, rural and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada through The Fresh Air

Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program. “Being able to run around outside is a freeing experience for our Fresh Air child. I still enjoy watching her face as she takes joy in the simple things, like roasting a marshmallow or jumping into the lake,” says a Fresh Air host mom. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, notfor-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from lowincome communities since 1877. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, from six to 18 years old, who live in New York City. Children on firsttime visits are six to 12 years old and stay for one or two weeks. There’s something to be said for nostalgia, even the not-so-distant-past variety. I have a hard time viewing cultural happenings, music and movies from the 90’s as “classic” - however, when you realize that some of these momentous occasions are approaching their 15 and 20year anniversaries, well that gives things a whole new perspective. Recently, the National Geographic channel premiered a new miniseries focusing on this particular decade, causing many from my generation to take a step back and realize that some of those things that seemed like “just yesterday” in fact

occurred many yesterdays ago. Perhaps part of the reason behind this time lapse of sorts is the fact that many of my fellow late 20-somethings and early 30-somethings still live at home, in the same town in which they attended high school and football games, local bars and beaches, and continue to socialize with the same circle of close knit friends from their school days. Essentially, not much has changed – so it seems positively mind-blowing to think that nearly two decades have elapsed. Ah, but they have. And none of us is getting any younger in the process. A sobering thought, isn’t it? Of course, in reality,

much has changed. The world as a whole, to start, straight on down to the local neighborhood streets we used to casually stroll along. To think that reunions have come and gone, friends have married (and, in some cases divorced), and are in the process of raising children and buying homes of their own – “growing up,” as they say – well, it had to happen eventually. Personally, I enjoy a good trip down memory lane as much as the next person. It’s fun to reflect upon the people who have graced our lives, the person you were and the one you still hope to become. Nostalgia or no, there’s still plenty of time to rewrite the story along the way!

Skyping With Spain

On Tuesday, June 10th, Spanish language students at Connetquot High School had the opportunity to meet their pen pals via SKYPE, from Spain. This ‘live’ televised experience was arranged by Connetquot’s Mr. Neal Reff and Mrs. Kim Licato, Chairperson of LOTE (Languages other than English). Mr. Reff spent two years teaching English in Spain, and this year arranged for his Spanish language students at Connetquot to practice their skills by writing to Spanish students in Burgos, Spain. Students from I.E.S. Comuneros de Castilla were excited to finally meet the American students they

had been writing to over the course of the year. Mr. Reff said that his students were “… excited that we were able to arrange a face to face SKYPE session as the school year winds down for students from both schools.” Connetquot students wrote their pen-pal letters in Spanish, while the students in IES Comuneros de Castilla responded in English. Through these letters the students were able to practice their foreign language skills through practical exchanges. During the one hour SKYPE experience questions from each side demonstrated that teenagers all have the same interests but

in differenct languages. Questions ranged from what boys are like (in each country), to favorite music artists, movies and TV shows. There were questions about favorite sports as well, but when one Connetquot student predicted that America would win the World Cup, at first there was silence from Spain, then laughter and comments about how impossible that would be. ‘Futbol’ is the national sport of Spain! All in all it was a wonderful experience for the students from both schools, and countries. Many of the youngsters expect to continue to stay in touch with their new ‘international’ friends.

Family Comes First From an early age, I have been raised with a certain code of morals. I have always been guided toward “being the bigger man” and making smart choices. I’ve always been expected to look out for my little brother, act as a second man of the house, and protect those who need protection. This code of conduct has been instilled in me through the diligent work of my parents. Although they have always made sure I was capable of handling myself, they are not helicopter parents. They kept their distance, preferring to test my competence rather than nurture a dependent child. I like to think that this style worked out. I attribute my personal character to their efforts. I was their first child.

They call me their “experiment,” but it seems like they knew what they were doing. After all, I’m still alive! Although it would be great if each baby came with an owner’s manual, that is not the case. There is no personalized guide to raising a life. That is why I have the utmost respect for my parents. As my mom grew up in the Ukraine, she was not afforded the generous opportunities that I am. Her upbringing has taught me to seize every chance. When the opportunity arose for me to write in a newspaper, she pushed me to take it. All of this has built my character and molded me into the person I need to be. In order to conquer the world as I move through my life, I try to apply the

life lessons handed down from my parents. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by my mom and dad. My dad is, and always has been, concerned with hard work. He grew up knowing the value of effort. He prodded me into getting a job when I was just thirteen. It was my idea, rooted in his morals. I have always tried to make my parents proud. However, they are truly responsible for making me the man I am today. I will always treasure my parents. They are the people who shaped me. They are solely responsible for nurturing me. I will always cherish the unconditional love and support that can only come from one source...Family.

In honor of Earth Day, the

Great American Cleanup takes place between March and May and is an event that each Keep America Beautiful affiliate participates in. The Great American Cleanup is the nation’s largest organized community improvement program. Over 2 million people improve 15,000 communities across the nation each year. Over 2,500 KIC volunteers roll up their sleeves to improve the quality of life in our community each year, cleaning up litter-strewn areas and beautifying their Town. “We’re extremely thankful to have so many

Habitat Projects Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s ReStore, located in Ronkonkoma, has been successful in raising funds for its affordable home building program for the past eight years. The success of the ReStore is only possible through the generous donations of building materials and supplies from local businesses on Long Island. Habitat Suffolk has been fortunate to be on the receiving end of thousands of donations from many individuals in addition

to hundreds of small and large businesses that help the organization grow and become more successful each year. One of ReStore’s most valuable partners is Costello’s Ace Hardware. For the past three years, they have supported Habitat Suffolk’s mission with a continuous flow of donated merchandise and several in-store promotions, including the Bonide Fertilizer donation, which helped raise substantial funds

As members of the 5th Annual High School Summer Internship Program they will work closely with over 50 students from other participating districts (Commack, Half Hollow Hills, Sachem and Smithtown) on independent projects which they will present to senior management at the end of the summer. Past projects included the creation of procedure manuals, research collection/ reporting and migration to new internal software. Andrew Hustick and Joseph Tedesco who have

been hired as Student Associates this summer, will be eligible to apply for the college internship program. On Wednesday June 11th Mrs. Denise Toscano, Principal of Connetquot’s Idle Hour Elementary School, welcomed proud parents, teachers and K-2 students to a third grade performance of a play entitled Beyond the NoCharacter Zone! Students from the classes of Mrs. Farrell, Ms. Eller and Mrs. Bankoff, along with music teacher and DASA Task Force member Mrs. Dougherty had worked for several months in preparation for the

afternoon’s performance. According to YFS (Youth & Family Services) Coordinator Mrs. Lara McNally, “The play was about a ‘secret mission’ to show students what life would be like if no one cared about good character. What would happen if respect, responsibility, caring, citizenship and honesty were character traits that no one had?” Students in the audience, along with the proud parents, came to understand the lesson of the play, which was how

important good character is, and that we all want to be around people like that. The third graders emphasized how important it is to get to school on time, respect the rights of others, helping others and treating each other with dignity. Mrs. Toscano congratulated the students, and their parents, for a wonderful performance, and message. She added, “The play was beautifully done, and all the third graders did a great job!”

Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School, welcomed parents, students and siblings to the school’s Multi-Cultural Club Dinner on June11th. Club Advisor Ms. Brooke Madison reports that the 10th annual MultiCultural Dinner was a ‘huge success’! Ms. Madison was proud of the students

who did a wonderful job of researching various countries and cultures. They then created projects representing those countries and, for the first time, acted out multicultural folktales from around the world. Parents were generous, as always, providing tasty dishes representing their family heritage. Members of the club, from grades two through

five, thoroughly enjoyed performing for their parents, and singing songs, but they really enjoyed the variety of tasty food from around the world! Congratulations to the students of the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Multi-Cultural Club. It has been an exciting year of learning about lives of people from around the world, topped off by a International feast!

On Friday June 13th, Mr. Stuart Pollak, Principal of Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia, welcomed parents, siblings and classmates to the 2014 fourthgrade Wax Museum exhibition. Organized by teachers Mrs. Klaus, Mrs. D’Andrea, Mrs McInerney and Mrs. Feldman, students selected a well known person, and created a well documented biography. Students were responsible for using three

different sources, citing evidence, and preparing a bibliography page. The culminating activity for this research project was to locate images of the student’s subject, create an appropriate ‘background’ and dress as that person. On June 13th, the students put their work on display, and positioned themselves as their subject would look in a Wax Museum! Parents visiting the exhibition in the school’s Atrium, admired the

exhibits, but could not expect to speak to their ‘Wax’ characters. Everyone in attendance applauded the students, and teachers, when these historic figures were allowed to move...and parents were anxious take photos with their proud ‘museum pieces’! Mr. Pollak would like to thank these hard-working students, parents and teachers for the dedicated effort they used to create the 2014 Sycamore Wax Museum exhibition.

This exhibit will be on display from August 9th through August 23rd, in the gallery, which is located at 54127 Main Road, Southold. The $500 “Thomas Currie-Bell Memorial Purchase Prize” - which will be awarded to the best work in the show - is named in honor of Southold painter Thomas Currie-Bell (1873-1946). A native of Scotland who trained extensively in Great Britain, Currie-Bell came to America in 1929

and settled in Southold, from where he traveled up and down the east coast, painting portraits and local scenery. His wife, Ann Hallock Currie-Bell, was the founder and first president of the Southold Historical Society, where a number of his paintings can be viewed. Artists from all over the east end of Long Island were invited to participate in the exhibition, as long as they either ‘resided on’ or ‘worked on’ the North Fork. Entries will be scrutinized by the two jurors; Sean Cleary, Chief Operating Officer of the well-respected Phillips Auction House of New York City; and Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Southold Historical Society and author of several books and catalogs on the history and art of Long Island. Out of the submissions, only 20 works will be selected to be included in the “North Fork Annual”

exhibition. It will be from those works that the purchase prize winner will be selected. The work selected as the winner of the prize will join the permanent collection of the historical society. The winner will be announced at the opening reception for the exhibition, which is being held on Friday, August 8th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. All of the remaining artworks selected for the exhibition will be available for sale at that time and for the duration of the exhibition. Hamptons Heart Ball The American Heart Association honored Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, Stony Brook University President at the 18th Annual Hamptons Heart Ball, which was set on the grounds of the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, NY on June 28th. Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry. •Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your statement before paying. Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases. • Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly. Consider

technology to protect against potential viruses. • Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves. •Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards. The information on a check—name, signature, address—can be used to steal identity. •Strengthen passwords: Use passwords with at least eight characters, including a combination of letters, numbers and symbols that are easy for you to remember but difficult for predators to guess. • Watch your wallet: Be careful at parties, restaurants, fitness clubs, shopping carts and your car. • Don’t take the bait on phishing scams: Also, beware of shoulder surfing (when a thief looks over

your shoulder while you’re at an ATM, either directly or via a camera). • Stop mail and newspaper delivery when you’ll be away from home. • Consider an identity theft protection service: One low-cost solution monitors the online criminal underground where identities are bought and sold and instantly alerts you if your Social Security number or up to 10 credit card or debit card numbers are posted by thieves. The service also scans online directories and search engines, prime sources for spammers and thieves, letting you know where your information is available, and provides advice on how to remove it. Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat

home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year. • Visit a pet adoption

center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to

be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with the cat? • You made a decision,

now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care.
