The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk.
One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”
2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community.
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection.

Remembering National Heroes Last month, in honor of Memorial Day, Seneca Middle School students, staff and community members recognized past and present veterans for their service and sacrifice to our country at the inaugural Field of Honor Ceremony. In a patriotic display of their collective support, flags purchased by students in honor of military veterans, friends and relatives who served in the armed forces waved in front of the school. The proceeds that resulted INTERNATIONAL LENTEN OFFERING - The congregation of Saint Anselms from the day’s events Episcopal Church selected Hope Children’s Fund for their international Lenten were donated to the local offering. Rev. Dr. John P. McGinty presented Hope Children’s Fund’s Vice President Kevin Mann with a check for $500.00! Veterans of Foreign Wars organization and the Team Jesse Foundation, a group that provides support to the families of fallen soldiers. Additionally, over the course of the year a team of family and consumer science students arrived at school early each morning to bake cinnamon bits that were on sale throughout the building. Each year the students select an organization to donate their profits to, and this year the students chose to donate their proceeds to benefit veterans. During the ceremony, those in attendance
recognized a number of honored guests, including members from the VFW Memorial Post 400 and John DiNaro, a local artist who created a sculpture that was placed alongside the display of flags to act as a monument of freedom for years to come. Accompanying the memorial ceremony were performances by studentmusicians in the orchestra and band who performed songs throughout the event that included “America the Beautiful,” “God Bless America” and “The StarSpangled Banner.”

Educator Goes Above And Beyond The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Helen B. Duffield Elementary School kindergarten teacher Teresa Hewitt on being selected as a 2019 Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council. In order to be considered for this award, Hewitt, who has been teaching in
Connetquot for the past 18 years, was nominated by Elementary Humanities Chairperson Eileen Abraham and her colleagues at Duffield Elementary School. “Teresa Hewitt has implemented best practices that she knows to be true and challenges her students to become early readers and
writers,” said Abraham. “Her work has shown a dedication to her own learning and to her profession, and she is well-deserving of this recognition.” Hewitt will be presented with the 2019 Educator of Excellence Award at the NYSEC Conference in October. The first grade students in Cheryl Hausle’s and Graceann Vavalle’s classes at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School wrapped up their yearlong writing experiences with an in-class celebration among family members on June 20. The students showcased the exemplary pieces they had created during the school year and talked about the various genres they had explored. They were also encouraged to continue reading and writing during the summer vacation and take advantage of an incentive literacy program for rewards in the coming school year. The celebration concluded with a certificate and small gift presented to each of the first graders, and refreshments were made available for everyone in attendance.

Students Excel In Math Students in James Longo’s fifth grade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District achieved a highly impressive feat by placing first out of 728 competing classrooms across the U.S. in the national Sumdog mathematics contest. “There were 15,485 individual students who participated in this year’s contest, and Duffield placed
seven students among the top 50 for individual honors,” said Longo. The program calls for students to participate in contest-centered games, competing against students of similar ability from around the world. The more games the students play, the more the games adapt to meet their learning needs. If students provide correct answers quickly, Sumdog automatically offers more
difficult questions while limiting the time allotted for answers. To further the challenge, a student who answers questions incorrectly on a given topic receives more of those types of questions in the ensuing rounds. Longo was very pleased with the dedication of his students and encourages them to keep up the good work in their future efforts.
Learning Important Lessons Members of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team recently visited the students of Blue Point Elementary School for an informative session about not giving up despite the obstacles that life may present. The athletes inspired hope as they explained how losing their limbs had not prevented them
from living their lives to the fullest. To test their physical endurance, team member Greg Reynolds challenged students to see how many pushups they could complete against him. The students also had the opportunity to ask the wounded warriors about their lives and thanked them for their service to the country.
Additionally, Councilman Neil Foley stopped by the school to thank the Warriors and explain the importance of their service to the United States. According to its website, the Wounded Warriors Project aims to honor and empower wounded warriors who have been injured and lost limbs while fighting to protect the country.

Showcasing Their Musical Talents Fifth grade students from Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently welcomed family members, teachers and fellow students to the school’s 2019 musical performance, “At the Bandstand – A Rock ’n’ Roll Review.” This fantastic trip down memory lane, produced and choreographed by music
teacher Kelly Daugherty, took the audience through an hour of nostalgic music, dance, hairstyles and clothing of the 1950s and 1960s. The students sang and danced to such classics as “Save the Last Dance for Me,” “Johnny Angel,” “Splish Splash” and the everpopular “Rockin’ Robin” while sporting poodle skirts
and leather jackets. Daugherty thanked her talented students, the helpful teachers and administrators, and the parents who assisted with the costumes and dance routines, for an outstanding production. Idle Hour Principal Sandra Rubin also congratulated the performers on a job welldone.

A Walk To Remember A number of Connetquot High School seniors visited their old elementary schools on June 21 to continue the annual Senior Walk tradition. As part of it, the elementary school principals welcomed the Class of 2019 members to their campuses to visit with former teachers and meet current elementary students.
Poised for their June 26 graduation in their red and white caps and gowns, the students met at the high school in the morning and were taken by school bus to their respective elementary schools, where they were eagerly welcomed by several of their past teachers. With the younger students cheering them on, the
seniors walked through the buildings in a memorable final procession, posing for photo opportunities along the way. Connetquot’s Senior Walk is an inspiration for everyone involved, as the current elementary students look forward to their turn in the tradition down the road.

The two $1,250 New York Credit Union Association scholarships were presented to Grace Armann of East Patchogue, a graduate of Bellport Senior High School who plans to attend Stony Brook University to study Journalism and Political Science, and Danielle Gerardi of Hauppauge, a graduate of Hauppauge High School who plans to attend the University of Notre Dame to study Computer Science. The recipient of the $750 NYCUA scholarship is David Amelemah, a graduate of St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School, who plans to attend Princeton University; and the recipient of the $500 NYCUA scholarship is Jennifer Furman of Bellport, a graduate of St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington, who plans to attend the University of Toronto to study Computer Science.

Graduates Receive Scholarships At a recent Scholarship Awards Ceremony held at Teachers Federal Credit Union headquarters in Hauppauge, Robert G. Allen, former President/CEO of TFCU, presented six $2,500 TFCU education scholarships and four New York Credit Union Association (NYCUA) education scholarships – two $1,250, one $750 and one $500 – to local graduating high school seniors. TFCU, one of the largest credit union in the country, has had a long-standing scholarship program to support and encourage Long Island students within the communities the credit union serves. This year $15,000 in TFCU Scholarships and $3,750 in NYCUA Scholarships have been awarded. “The recipients of the TFCU and NYCUA educational scholarships represent the future of Long Island. A Commitment To Reporting Due to their academic success and commitment to reporting and writing, Connetquot High School juniors Toni Gallo and Trinity Harper have been selected to take part in two prestigious journalism programs this upcoming July. While in attendance at the Summer Journalism Institute hosted at Stony Brook University, Toni will have the opportunity to work alongside seasoned journalists and explore
the multimedia aspects of the career path, such as photography and videography. Additionally, she will be provided residency on campus and will be able to sample the college experience prior to possibly attending in the future. In a similar fashion, Trinity was accepted to the “Writing the Big City: Reporting in New York” Summer Academy at The School of The New York Times, based in Manhattan.
During her time in the prestigious program, Trinity will be given the opportunity to fine-tune her skills in investigative journalism, along with attending workshops hosted by renowned journalists.
