New Interim Director The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has announced the appointment of Rosalba Messina, MPA as Interim Executive Director, effective July 1st. Research Grant Awarded

On June 26th, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., presented a check in the amount of $3,000 to Dr. Irving H. Gomolin, Chief, Division of Geriatric Medicine, WinthropUniversity Hospital, in Mineola. The grant will assist Dr. Gomolin’s study on how the removal of Namenda from the marketplace and the use of its substitute - an extended release formulation - will impact the blood levels of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia. Namenda - also known

as Memantine - is an oral medication used to treat moderate to severe dementia related to Alzheimer’s Disease. While it does not cure AD, it may improve memory, awareness and the ability to perform daily functions. Namenda works by blocking the action of glutamate, a natural substance in the brain that is believed to be linked to symptoms of AD. The standard tablet formulation of the drug is being removed from the marketplace in August 2014 without any available generic versions in the U.S. because patent rights to

the drug do not expire until 2015. Instead, Alzheimer’s patients can be switched to an extended release formulation of Memantine. The grant came from part of an anonymous donation that ADRC recently received. This was the first research study the organization has funded. The Highlight Reel By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we head into the 4th of July holiday, allow me to share some excerpts of a column from the archives, written back in the fall of 2005, just a few short months after I began my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers… I met Don Mattingly. No, let me elaborate…I didn’t just meet him; I interviewed him, one-onone, for a solid fifteen minutes. Don Mattingly, one of my favorite players of all time…a living legend. And I did it while working for this very newspaper. The opportunity came about after I received an e-mail at work regarding a local autographsigning event. My initial reaction? When I went home that day, I excitedly announced to my mother, “I want to go! Wouldn’t that be cool? I can get his autograph!” My mother just looked at me, perplexed, and said, “You can cover it, can’t you? You

work for the paper, remember?” Oh. Right. The next day, I contacted the public relations firm that had put out the press release and was told that, yes, they would love for someone from our paper to cover the event, and would I maybe like to speak with Mr. Mattingly prior to the signing? Would I?! Was that even a question? By the time Mattingly arrived at the event, the line was already stretched around the building, with more people arriving every minute, and so I was forced to wait until the very end to do the interview. It was worth the wait. Once the crowd dispersed, the few people remaining headed into the back of the store where more items were lined up for Mattingly to sign for charity. A girl who worked for his agent explained to him who I was and would he mind answering a few questions while he signed? “No, not at all,” he replied in that soft Indiana accent of his, and motioned for me to stand next to him at the table.

I proceeded to go down my list of questions. To my pleasant surprise, Mattingly answered each one thoroughly, pausing to consider his answers first, and then carefully explained his responses in great detail – definitely not your typical 15-second sound bite. It was as if I had known him for years. He was a true gentleman, full of class, and extremely humble. The image absolutely matched the reality. Considering he had just been signing autographs for a solid three hours – twice as long as scheduled – he gave no impression of being bothered by any of it, no impression of being “above” such things as an interview with a local paper that he had probably never heard of. On the way home that night, my mother asked, “So, did you ever imagine you would have the chance to interview Don Mattingly while working for your hometown paper? Never in my wildest dreams.

This was once a summer town where streets could wind unpaved, unbound by keep off signs and plush sod strips and paths were laid by barefoot trips to splintered piers as rusting traps awaited blue claws’ August laps; while boats moored fast to marshes’ edge would lie in wait concealed in sedge for ducks to sail their V shaped wedge; where clammers toiled, each rake applied knee deep to race an ebbing tide; while baited lines on a silt-soft shore reels spinning fast were cast once more; where shacks leaned south to taste the bay, shingles bleaching brown to gray; and boat yards hugged each sheltered lee when gales pruned clean each proud elm tree. This was once a summer town; few streets remain unpaved, unbound.

New Beginnings Blanketing the front lawn of their high school in a sea of blue and gold, the Bayport-Blue Point High School Class of 2014 concluded their academic journey in the district in late June with a ceremony rich in tradition and pride. This year’s 178 graduates signified the start of the ceremony by marching to the sounds of “Pomp and Circumstance,” played by the high school band and orchestra, before taking their seats amid proud parents, family members and educators. Throughout the ceremony, two themes resonated among the honored speakers: graduates were urged to continue to seek ways to improve themselves personally and professionally, and to never settle or let challenges stand in their way. “I encourage you to take risks and be open to life, because it’s the chances you take, the people you meet and those who you surround yourself with that will truly define who you are,” said Principal Dr. Gaurav Passi. “Never say no to yourself…never let fear of failure, rejection, not being good enough or other people’s ideas of what our capabilities are get in the way,” said Board of Education President Rebecca Campbell.

Peer Leaders Visit Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) counselors Tara Sullivan and Katie Justino recently brought their Peer Leader students to visit Edith L. Slocum, Cherokee Street and Helen B. Duffield elementary schools within the district. The seventh and eighth grade Peer Leaders were well prepared with presentations to ease the minds of their younger

Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms had a highly successful spring season, with every varsity team advancing to postseason contests. The girls’ lacrosse team won its first Suffolk County championship, and a number of track and field athletes qualified to compete at the state level. Capping off the season were two state champions: the boys baseball team, and a four-member girls track squad – made up of Kathleen Cibuls, Courtney Dooley, Ashley Magnifico and Brigitte Strobl – who won the 4x400 relay.

For the second straight year, the baseball team returned with recordbreaking honors. They are the first Long Island and Class A New York State champions in history to win back-to-back championships. The four track stars also set a new school record by almost a full second and have the third fastest small school 4x400 time in Long Island history. Additionally, the girls track and field team won their 12th straight league championship and fourth straight county championship.

When the winners returned home, the community honored them during a salute to the champions event on the high school football field. Each team coach spoke about the collective and individual achievements of the athletes before presenting them with commemorative plaques. Town of Islip Councilman Anthony Senft and Dennis Bennett representing New York State Sen. Phil Boyle also honored the athletes with proclamations.

On June 29th, the Community Ambulance Company, Inc. held its third annual 5K run and walk in the town of Sayville. The Community Ambulance Company 5K Run and Walk was a part of one of the premier running series on Long Island, The Sayville Summer Series. The run was held at the Islip Grange Park in Sayville, and had an impressive 291 participants in the race. The springtime community events are over, the tally is complete and the verdict is in: Keep Islip Clean’s 25th Anniversary Great American Cleanup was a huge success. Over 2,000 volunteers worked in scores of events and the end result was the

removal of approximately 22 tons of litter and small debris, plus larger items, including tires, car seats and shopping carts. Volunteers also planted about 6,000 flowers through Project Bloom, beautified local beaches, trimmed trees and

Coming Together Day On a beautifully sunny June 3rd Connetquot School District Director of Athletics Mr. Mark Dellecave welcomed close to 500 fifth graders to the high school’s athletic field in Bohemia. Students, and teachers, from Edward J. Bosti, Cherokee Street, Helen B. Duffield, Idle Hour, John Pearl, Edith L. Slocum and Sycamore Avenue Elementary Schools came together to celebrate the end of the school year, and meet their future classmates. Each of these youngsters will ‘graduate’ from their

current elementary school, and move on to either the Oakdale-Bohemia or Ronkonkoma Middle Schools. This ‘Coming Together’ sports day is a Connetquot Central School District tradition that began 23 years ago. This special day provides the youngsters with an opportunity to mingle with 5th graders from throughout the district. Coming Together Day has always provided the youngsters with the opportunity to have some fun, and make friends with the same students

who will join them at the district’s middle schools in September. Mr. Dellecave would like to thank the classroom, as well as the physical education, teachers from each of the 7 buildings, along with high school volunteers, that made this enjoyable day possible. Author Visit Sycamore Avenue Elementary School Librarian Mrs. Laura Mansfield recently welcomed well-known Children’s Author Selene Castrovilla to visit the school and talk to 4th graders about her work, and process. On May 14th Ms. Castrovilla spoke to the students about her work on three books about the American Revolution. The students enjoyed her presentation as she

Students of the Edith. L. Slocum Elementary School recently joined with teachers to celebrate the Spring season by planting colorful plants and flowers in the school’s courtyard! Mrs. Linda Penningon and Mrs. Tina Rote, Advisors to the Slocum Elementary School Garden Club organized 2nd through 5th grade students and went to work on Wednesday, May 14th.

Students put on their gardening clothes, and gloves, picked up their tools and got to work! They planted flowers, vegetables and herbs, many donated by Project Bloom, and the Town of Islip. They also planted colorful cosmos, zinnias, alyssum, sunflowers and marigolds to brighten up the school’s courtyard. Mrs. Pennington, Mrs. Rote, and Slocum

Principal Mr. John Delio expressed their thanks to all the students, the Town of Islip and especially the always helpful members of the school’s Building and Grounds department. Thanks to everyone who helped with this colorful project. The children look forward to being able to harvest the various herbs and spices they planted on May 14th!
