The ceremony was held on the high school football field, as over 1,000 parents and friends watched 495 Connetquot seniors receive their diplomas, presented to the graduates by members of the Board of Ed, Superintendent Lynda G. Adams, Asst. Superintendent Dean Mittelman and Duffield Principal Linda Farrell.

A juried art show in Port Jefferson this summer that will benefit the Fortunato Breast Health Center will feature works inspired by the personal transformation, hope, love, fear, loss and victory associated with breast cancer. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital is teaming up with the North Shore Art Guild, the Village of Port Jefferson and the Port Jefferson Conservancy to present “Artists United Against Breast Cancer”, a juried art show at the Port Jefferson Village Center from August 30th, 2015 to Saturday, October 31st. The show will have as its theme “Victors of Survival, A Celebration of the Warrior Within Each of Us.” “Victors of Survival is not just about breast cancer. It’s about personal transformation, the person you become having faced the experience,” said Mac Titmus, Vice President of the Art Guild and coordinator of the show. “It’s about the emergence of the warrior within you, and the struggle that brings it forth. It’s about you, the artist, and how you choose to transform that passion into expression.” Artists do not need to be a cancer survivor or family member of a survivor to participate. Introductory remarks were made by interim Principal Dr. Richard G. Spear, Board of Education President Lee Kennedy and Superintendent Lynda G. Adams. U.S. Senator

Chuck Schumer was this year’s guest speaker, encouraging the graduates to follow their dreams. Salutatorian Lawrence Brett, Valedictorian Steven Crescenti, and President of the graduating class Anna Agnes addressed their classmates, friends and family, bringing applause and laughter. Graduates and families were glad to see retired principal Gregory Murtha and retired assistant principal Mark Brodsky in attendance. Music was arranged and conducted

by Mr. Gregory Johnson, Mr. Vincent Palminteri and the talented members of the CHS band. The Senior Chorus performed the Star Spangled Banner under the direction of Mr. Drinkwater, Mr. Nagle and Mrs. Owens. Diplomas were presented to the graduates by members of the Board of Education, Superintendent Lynda G. Adams, Assistant Superintendent Dean Mittelman and Duffield Principal Linda Farrell.

Salutatorian Announced Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School is proud to announce high school senior Larry Brett as this year’s salutatorian. Larry achieved an unweighted grade point average of 98.66. “Throughout the past four years, Larry has achieved immense success inside and outside of the classroom and has served as an excellent role model for his peers,” said Connetquot Central School District Superintendent Lynda G. Adams. “The teachers, administrators and I are proud of all he

has achieved and look forward to learning of his future successes.” In addition to achieving one of the highest grade point averages in his class, Larry was named an Advanced Placement Scholar. He is also a member of the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society. Throughout his high school career, Larry played viola and was active in music and theater. He played in Connetquot High School’s orchestra and chamber orchestra. In his spare time, Larry works at

A Bright Future Bayport-Blue Point School District’s fifth- and eighth-grade students marked an educational milestone this June as they celebrated their promotions to middle and high school, respectively. During commemorative moving-up ceremonies, the students’ years of hard work, dedication and service to their school communities were applauded and praised by

administrators and several local elected officials. Additionally, several musical groups showcased their talents by performing an array of familiar selections, including an “Irish Friendship Wish.” At the Academy Street Elementary School moving up ceremony, students’ were applauded for receiving presidential awards, an honor from the Blue Point-Bayport

Lions Club and several community service sponsored awards. As the soon-to-be graduates prepared to bid farewell to their respective buildings, school administrators concluded the ceremonies by sharing their reflections on the classes and presenting the students with their moving-up diplomas.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently presided over the swearingin ceremony for the new officers of the Islip Youth Board. The Youth Board was created in 1975 by the

Islip Town Board, and is dedicated to serving the members of the Islip community who are under 21 years of age. The Youth Bureau and Youth Board work with a local network of youth

agencies to provide youth development/delinquency prevention services. To ensure advocacy for our Town’s youth, one-third of the Board’s members must be drawn from young volunteers.

Summer Series On Sunday, June 28th, Community Ambulance Company of Sayville hosted their 4th Annual 5k Run/Walk as a part of the Sayville Summer Series races. The event benefits the ambulance company which serves the five towns of Sayville, West Sayville, Bayport, Oakdale and Bohemia.

This year’s race was their largest ever with 324 total participants. The top male finisher was Dan Gargano from Jericho, at a time of 15 minutes and 10 seconds. The fastest female was Nadine Moors from Sayville with a time of 19 minutes and 14 seconds. Congratulations to

all participants for an outstanding performance. All runners completed the course safely and without issue. The participants put their best foot forward so Community Ambulance can continue to do the same for their community.

Don’t Forget the Flats By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Expanding upon my adventuring-into-NYC theme from last week, clearly, I prefer to get around on foot. Sure, weather can be a factor, or time, but as long as it’s somewhat feasible, walking the city streets can be one of the more enjoyable aspects of exploring Manhattan. Assuming, that is, you have the proper footwear. Do I speak from personal experience? Why, of course I do. This past autumn, my friend and I – both former dancers – decided to buy tickets to the NYC Ballet. It would be our very first time seeing such a professional-scale performance; plus it was a great excuse to spend the day roaming the city. We (somewhat) mapped out our excursions, deciding we would walk from Penn Station all the way up to Lincoln Center, meandering off-route periodically. The day was unseasonably

warm for late September (like, approaching 90º warm), but we forged ahead with our plan to brave the elements. The main stop I wanted to make was to Central Park, in the vicinity of Strawberry Fields. For those unfamiliar, that’s a solid 35 blocks. Not a problem, at first. The issue, one that we had failed to appropriately navigate, was getting through the park without traveling, oh, about 27 miles out of the way. That was the moment when my decision to wear heels really kicked in as the wrong choice. Pavement was one thing; rolling hills and dirt paths quite another. Let’s just sum up the experience by stating that, after wandering aimlessly for hours, stopping to rest at literally every single park bench we passed, I was in dire need of a shoe substitute. With our show at Lincoln Center fast approaching, we desperately scanned the stores as we made our way south.

Finally, I spotted a Duane Reade. They sell flip-flops, don’t they? Well, yes, they do. However, unless you have size 11 feet, they won’t do you much good. Desperately, I searched the racks for something, anything else that would fulfill my purpose – which, at this point, was not being forced to walk barefoot down the city sidewalks. Just when I had given up hope, there they were – a pair of size 9 (I’m a size 7) ballet slipper flats. Sold. And so off we went to Lincoln Center, shoes in hand. Classy. I found myself reflecting upon this fond memory as I prepared for yet another city trip, to yet another ballet performance at Lincoln Center, with the same friend, over the Fourth of July weekend. Plans were mapped out accordingly, including a detour into Central Park. To be continued…

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Robotics Team Honored The Suffolk County Legislature recently honored a team of Sachem School District students who competed in the World Championship of the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition in St. Louis. Known as Sachem Aftershock, the team of about 50 students from Sachem North High School and Sachem High School East showed the Legislature just what their robot can do at a General Meeting this month in Riverhead. In its annual robotics competition, FIRST, a nonprofit committed to inspiring young people to become leaders in science and technology, challenges high school students to raise funds, build a team brand and design a robot that can complete specified tasks. Each team was given only 42 days to produce its robot, which could not weigh more than 120 pounds. Sachem Aftershock then competed in several regional competitions, performing well enough to earn an invitation to the World Championship in St. Louis in April, where they competed with more than 12,000 students from 38 countries. The team advanced to the quarterfinals. “I am honored to congratulate these young

engineers,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The key to solving some of our nation’s greatest challenges lies in science and technology, and I commend these students, their advisors and their sponsors for investing in our collective future.” Sachem Aftershock captain Bryan Mahony, a graduating senior who will study business at Bentley
