We have been blessed with a team of instructors that have professional teaching experience in a Comprehensive

Transition Program and first and foremost, a love of supporting positive growth in their students; and so, through our Above and Beyond Community Class initiative, BUE’s community has grown to an incredible group of over 80 individuals from all over and ranging in age from 14 into their thirties.” Since September, this nonprofit has had 100% retention and everyday their BUE community continues to expand, while keeping their interactive classes small and personalized for optimum learning. To nurture the incredibly important sense of belonging, they also make sure they incorporate free lunch meetings, a weekly wrap up community meeting, as well as social events to integrate learning and help students nurture their bonds with each other. Students and professionals are always welcome to visit their new location to see what its all about! Additionally, if you are looking to get involved with BUE, they welcome professionals that have teaching experience and a lot of heart to reach out and propose classes that they can run that will support skillbuilding and increase quality of life for others. RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - On June 23, 2021, the Adventureland family celebrated the Grand Reopening of Adventureland with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. Adventureland opened in 1962 and has been serving Long Island for over 59 years. The park offers both season and day passes that can be purchased online or at the park. This year’s hot NEW ride is the Sports Tower with over 30 additional rides at the park. It is easily located on Route 110 in Farmingdale. In attendance were the Adventureland family, the Farmingdale Chamber of Commerce, Legislature Jason Richberg, Senator John Brooks, Assemblyman Steve Stern, Councilman Anthony Manetta, and Dana Durso of Andrew Garbarino’s office.

Student Earns Special Award

Sachem High School East senior Louis Augier was recently awarded the special NASA Earth System Science Project Award for his research project presented at the annual Long Island Science and Engineering Fair. Louis’s research project examined how changes to

the design and dimensions of wing designs either increase or decrease their efficiency. Utilizing the science lab in Dr. Michael Vaccariello’s science research class, Louis designed a variety of wings using the Auto CAD program and then 3D printed them before testing his designs in a wind tunnel within the lab.

As part of the annual science fair, this award is presented to student projects matching specific criteria that best demonstrate insight into Earth’s interconnected systems and incorporate studies of the different components of Earth systems, their interactions and their evolution over time.

ABC’s John Quinones Asks Students ‘What Would You Do?’

While leading their ninth grade English students in a reading of “The Miracle Worker,” the story of Annie Sullivan’s journey of teaching language to Helen Keller, Connetquot High School teachers Ross Castaldo and Melissa Koster used segments of the ABC television show “What Would You Do?” to reinforce the importance of acceptance and understanding. This hidden camera show puts people in various

morally conflicting scenarios to examine how the unknowing participants will behave and what choices they will make. Watching these clips provided the ninth graders with much “food for thought” and sparked interesting conversations amongst them. Through the use of social media, Castaldo was able to contact John Quinones, the show’s host, who happily agreed to engage in a virtual conversation

with the ninth graders via Google Meet. Gathered in the school’s library media center, the students took turns asking Quinones questions about his experiences filming the show, which he answered with great detail and passion. While they were excited by the opportunity to speak with a celebrity, more importantly, the students were impacted by Quinones’ fundamental message: people need to look out for one another.

St. Joseph’s College Breaks Ground for New State-of-the-Art Student Center St. Joseph’s College (SJC) recently broke ground for a new $17 million Student Center to be constructed at SJC Long Island located in Patchogue, New York. Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College was joined by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Patchogue Mayor Paul Pontieri, State Assemblymen Doug Smith and Jarret Gandolfo, County Legislator Rob Calarco and members of the SJC Board of Trustees for the special occasion. The Student Center, which is being built to serve the institution’s growing student population, will be financed by the College’s bond issue and is the first new building to be constructed on the campus in 18 years. “This project is something that unites us,” said Dr. Donald R. Boomgaarden, President of St. Joseph’s College. “This building is a door through which we can walk into

new relationships with our neighbors and with each other. This building will not just contain classrooms, but it will contain spaces and technology that will serve to connect our students to each other and to the outside world.” The two-story 32,000 square-foot Student Center will feature indoor and outdoor spaces including a dining area, art gallery, chapel and office for campus ministry, veterans lounge, spirit gift shop, E-sports unit, computer and lounge spaces, conference and meeting rooms and offices for faculty, staff and student clubs. Construction is expected to begin in summer 2021 and anticipated to be completed by spring 2023. In collaboration with the Town of Brookhaven and Village of Patchogue, this capital project also includes a major sewer project that is currently underway. A virtual tour of the

159 Bellport High School Students Inducted Into National Honor Society Bellport High School’s National Honor Society inducted 159 students during a virtual ceremony this spring. Co-adviser Suzanne Hines explained that the district’s annual induction included students from the Class of 2020, who were unable to be officially inducted due to the pandemic, and students from the Class of 2021. The celebration commenced with the Cadet Core, who led viewers in the Pledge of Allegiance, and the Bellport High School String Quartet, who played the national anthem. Co-adviser Danielle Stuckey said that the

inductees have proven themselves capable of achieving success in academics, sports, clubs and community service. “It is to your benefit to continue to make yourself a well-rounded person,” she told the inductees. National Honor Society officers President Angie Gomez, Vice President Mariz Baslious, secretary Melisa Kilic and treasurer Caitlin Saliba explained the meaning of the society’s tenets of scholarship, service, leadership and character prior to each inductee’s photo being flashed across the screen. Principal Timothy Hogan noted that having

maintained a 90% grade point average or above, a society requirement, is a remarkable achievement in itself, but he is more impressed by the leadership, service and character components that each inductee possesses. “These components paint a broader picture of you and the school community,” Mr. Hogan said. “You are leaders in the building and to those around you.” Mr. Hogan then led the inductees in the National Honor Society Oath, making their membership in this prestigious organization official.

Swan River Dredging Project Set To Commence

Legislator Calarco announces imminent emergency action to dredge shoaling at the mouth of the Swan River in East Patchogue. The shoaling, caused by severe storms, has become extremely dangerous making passage even in high tide difficult and at low tide impossible for most boats. Despite not being on the designated high priority list by the Town of Brookhaven, the conditions prompted the county to seek emergency authorization to remove RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR COLLEGE COMMITMENTS - Connetquot High the ever-growing sandbar. The emergency work will commence in the near future, and will be conducted from the shoreline and may cause periods where boaters will not be able to traverse the area. “My office worked closely with the offices of Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Cuomo to obtain the permits from the

ACOE and the NYS DEC. I want to thank them and the staff of the Department of Public Works to expedite this process, and all the permits were approved. The importance of partnerships cannot be understated, especially when it comes to protecting the wellbeing of our waters and the environment,” said Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. Calarco added “I am so happy to announce this action, as I will ensure that all of the residents who keep or launch their boats from the Swan River will be able to enjoy our waters the summer.”

Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
