We can all use a little sunshine in our lives. No matter how happy we may be, there is always room for more. It is a life source, a beacon of positivity, light, warmth – all features whose benefits have the ability to make daily life that much more fulfilling. Sure, not everyone is a “summer” person. But I don’t know of too many who fail to embrace the positive qualities a little daylight provides. Come winter, spring, summer or autumn, the sun shines on, allowing all those who wish to bask in its glow. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good thunderstorm just as much as the next person. There is something about inclement weather which

affords the easy excuse to be just a bit more unproductive than when the sun is shining brightly. One doesn’t feel so guilty sleeping a little later, pushing aside some of those errands, saving that running around for another day. To everything, and everyone, there is a season. Luckily for us, we have four distinct ones to enjoy – or count the days down until they pass – whichever method you prefer. For me, I say it is always better to appreciate that time rather than wish it away. Six months ago, we were checking off the days until summer vacation and beach weather and all the rest that comes with extended hours of sunshine was to arrive. And six months from now, we shall

be doing the same. Such is the circle of life. Personally, I make it my mission to witness as many sunsets as possible and – though it pains me to “rise and shine” quite that early – even my fair share of sunrises. There is something quite magical about the dawning of a new day; same with the golden glow which overtakes the landscape as the sun prepares to dip below the horizon. So go outside, take a walk, absorb your surroundings. Take it all in. Allow the warmth of the sun to touch your soul. It’s the most natural form of healing we have, and it’s there for the taking. Embrace it. Happy Summer to all.

Duffield Elementary School recently organized an opportunity for dance and sing with representatives from the CM Performing Arts Center, while learning about the importance of making healthy choices. Through use of songs and different exercises, including an interactive dance story called I like to Move It, Move It, the guest-performers were able to get the children on their feet and encourage them to make healthy decisions. The event was intended to stress the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the choices needed to achieve one.

Character Excellence Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay has spent the past week traveling to various elementary schools throughout his district to present select students with the Suffolk County Legislature’s Character Excellence Award. This award was established in 2014 and since its inception has been given to exceptional students moving up to the middle school at the nomination of their teachers. The honored students exhibit qualities of strong character, excellent leadership and unmatched integrity. Though there are many students at all of these schools who have stood out in unique ways, the recipients of the Suffolk County Legislature’s Character Excellence Award attract attention for reasons these students themselves may not even recognize. However, the glowing nominations from their teachers and peers prove that they are the perfect representation of the essence of the award. Their constant demonstrations of exemplary character traits have endeared these students to their entire

community. “These students were chosen as the Character Excellence Award winners because they have gone to extraordinary heights to reveal their true courage, leadership, and perseverance.” said Legis. Lindsay. “As a proud father of my own first grader and seventh grader I know how much is demanded from students, parents, teachers and administrators alike throughout the course of a school year. All of these moving up ceremonies are a great reflection of the growth of these outstanding young students as well as a look ahead to all of their future successes. I urge students to take what they have learned throughout their time in elementary school and apply it to the middle school, high school and beyond.” Below is the list of the exceptional students honored: Danielle Wanerka from Merrimac Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of her contagious enthusiasm and personality. She exhibits the highest integrity both academically and socially and is wise well beyond her

age. Olivia Losardo from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of her willingness to help her peers with everything from challenging school work to organization skills to scheduling. Maya Guacci from Sunrise Drive Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of her commitment to excellence in the classroom, community and extracurricular activities. She excels as a member of chorus, select chorus, plays percussion for the school band and is a member of the student council. Adrianna Ancilleri from Waverly Avenue Elementary School received the Character Excellence award for her participation in the Student Ambassador Program where she demonstrates a unique ability to be a leader and positive role model. She also earned praise for helping students with developmental disabilities acquire social skills as well as lending a helping hand with classwork. Amanda Kleinman from

Cherry Avenue Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of being delightfully engaging and treating everyone with a high level of respect. She is a well-rounded young lady who always demonstrates integrity and accountability. Liam Maron from Idle Hour Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for being considered one of the school’s most outgoing and friendly students. He is applauded for his consistent work ethic that causes him to go above and beyond what is asked of him every single day. Mikayla Montalvo from Edward J. Bosti Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of her involvement in enrichment activities which have allowed her to make a difference in people’s lives inside and outside the classroom. She demonstrates an innate sense of empathy that is welcomed by her peers and teachers alike. Daphne Hicyilmaz from Hiawatha Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award as a result of being

such an active participant in class, exemplifying great study habits and consistently working to reach her full potential as well as helping classmates achieve the same. Andrew Macchio from Nokomis Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for his remarkable work as student-athlete continuously going the extra mile. His selfless attitude and personality endear him to his peers and teachers as he cannot be thanked enough for his leadership. Patrick Shanahan from Academy Street Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for his innate motivation to help others. He participated in the effort to raise money for St. Baldrick’s day to benefit those suffering from cancer as well as consistently finding ways to help classmates in need. Brianna Adams of Lincoln Avenue Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for her excellent community service record. This year Brianna completed a ‘Genius Hour’ project to benefit those suffering from cancer and that

generosity extends to helping classmates on a day-to-day basis. Ethan Alcantara, also of Lincoln Avenue Elementary School, received the Character Excellence Award for his success in the classroom and on the field. Ethan is looked at by his classmates and teammates for leadership and guidance which he is always more than willing to provide. Alexia Temps of John Pearl Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for her strong moral character, honesty, cheerfulness and responsibility that her teachers rave about. She is someone who realizes the importance of education and demonstrates perseverance and focus when classwork is the toughest. Madelyn Eads, also of John Pearl Elementary School received the Character Excellence Award for her perpetual cheeriness that is infectious to teachers and classmates alike. She is always willing to help brighten up other student’s days as well as help other students with difficult subject matter.

Moving Up Memories The educational achievements earned by Bayport-Blue Point School District fifth- and eighth-grade students were recently celebrated and applauded during building level moving up ceremonies. Following years of hard work, dedication and service to their school communities, the

students were collectively applauded and praised by administrators and several local officials. At Blue Point Elementary School’s moving up ceremony, students were honored with Presidential Academic Awards, New York State Comptroller’s Award and three community scholarships. Reflecting on their

elementary years, students from each class also shared poem “couplets” about the six years they spent at Blue Point. To conclude the program, each fifthgrader was presented with a commemorative moving up certificate and collectively joined together to perform the song, “Watch As We Walk On Our Way.”

Recognizing Achievements The Connetquot School District Board of Education recently awarded several students and teachers from throughout the District for their achievements this past school year. The awards were presented at a ceremony held at the final Board of Education meeting of the 2015-2016 school year at Connetquot High School’s Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center.

Kindergarten Graduation

The Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary recently hosted its kindergarten graduation ceremony. Students and teachers welcomed family and friends to look on as their children sang musical selections and celebrated the successful conclusion of their kindergarten

experience. The graduating kindergartners performed several songs in their ‘Kindergarten Rocks’ t-shirts. Cherokee Street Elementary School principal Mr. James T. Williams was pleased with the ceremony’s turnout and enthusiastic reaction to the performance. After

the ceremony, family members were led into the school’s atrium for refreshments and pictures. The event celebrated the students’ completion of the kindergarten curriculum and provided a chance to look forward to future success in the elementary school.

Christmas in June

The Patchogue Lions Club held its sixteenth annual “Christmas in June” event on Thursday, June 23rd, at Boomer’s Family Fun Center in Medford. For the eleventh consecutive year, as part of its ongoing community service, Gershow Recycling sponsored the event by donating $1,500. One hundred fortyone school children from seven elementary schools in the Patchogue-Medford School District were chosen to participate in this year’s event by their respective principals. Since the Patchogue Lions Club has started “Christmas in

June,” more than 1,800 children have participated in this fun-filled event. “This was a nice way to give these children an opportunity to have some fun and spend the day with their friends,” said Vito LaMonica, Event Chairman and Past President, Patchogue Lions Club. “It gave the children a place to enjoy themselves, especially with the school year drawing to a close.” Children were treated to lunch and then given full access for several hours to attractions, including rides, go-carts, wall climbing, bumper boats,

Field Day Competition The Connetquot School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School ParentTeacher Association (PTA) volunteers, along with physical education faculty recently hosted its annual Field Day competition for students.

In a tradition of friendly competition and fun for all ages, Field Day is intended to provide a platform for students, teachers and parents to enjoy the weather and celebrate the culmination of the school year.

The event featured activities, such as obstacle courses, potato sack races, tug-of-war, and hula hooping. The annual field day allows students to learn about teamwork and multiple physical activities.

Raising the Flag The Connetquot School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary recently celebrated Flag Day during an event featuring active-duty and retired United States military veterans and more than 700 students in grades kindergarten through fifth. To commemorate the event, students wore

patriotic colors while reciting the pledge of allegiance, singing songs and playing the recorder. In addition, the school’s orchestra and chorus each gave performances. In addition, Captain Bryan Hoffman, a Ronkonkoma resident and an active-duty soldier in the National Guard,

joined the celebration and raised the flag to begin the festivities. Hoffman also presented Principal James T. Williams with a flag flown at his military base in Cuba. The event was intended to celebrate patriotism and FIGHTING FOR RIGHTS - The Connetquot High School’s Anti-Bullying Club teach students the history advisers, Barbara Martorelli and Debbie Billotto, were recently recognized by the of the American flag. Inter-Faith Bias Task Force for their commitment to a harassment-free school and community. The Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently welcomed first responders from throughout the Connetquot community to participate in its annual spirited and patriotic Flag Day celebration. In honor of the event, students and

faculty all wore red, white and blue attire. During the celebration, the school’s chorus and band performed patriotic songs and Mrs. Salters, who is both a police officer and parent of Slocum Elementary School student, sang the star spangled banner.

In addition, Mrs. Riegger, a kindergarten teacher from the district who is retiring after working in the Connetquot School District for 30 years, was the honorary flag raiser. The purpose of this event was to teach students the history of the American flag and celebrate patriotism.

Dellecave Honorees

Lesson on Albinism fourth-grade student who has albinism, and his teacher, Mrs. Pinelli, led a presentation to raise awareness. Daniel talked about albinism and the effect it has had on his life. He also answered questions about what causes albinism, the resources he uses for help and the dangers of not

wearing sunscreen and spending too much time in the sun. International Albinism Awareness Day was established in 2013 and is celebrated every June 13th. The day is a method of bringing attention to this genetic disorder with little awareness.

Nicole Farese of Sayville High School and Livingstone V. Harriott, Jr. of Central Islip High School were honored top prizes at the 16th annual Butch Dellecave Awards ceremony held on June 12th, at the West Lake Inn in Patchogue. Athletic Directors from all sixty-six Suffolk County school districts were asked to nominate one male and one female from their high school senior class. Nominees are students who are not only at the top of their game, but also scored high in classroom performance and in their

commitment to local community service. Nicole Farese was consistently one of Sayville High School’s top performers in both softball and soccer. In addition, she has been recognized for her exceptional academic performance as well as her strong commitment to her community. She’ll be attending Gettysburg College where she plans on studying Communications. Livingstone Harriott was an All-County football player and an All-State track star at Central Islip High School where he finishing fourth statewide

in the triple jump. He will be attending Brown University where he will play wide receiver while studying computer engineering. Named in memory of the legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the Dellecave Award is the product of a highly successful 16-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday.

The graduating senior class, consisting of 517 students, received their diplomas in front of a packed crowd of family, friends and community members. This was the 52nd graduating class from Connetquot High School. New York State Senator Thomas D. Croci, a 1990

Connetquot High School graduate, was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. United States Senator Chuck Schumer also addressed the audience and shared his well wishes. Principal Mr. Kenneth J. Costa, Jr., Board of Education president Mrs. Milynn Augulis and superintendent Lynda G. Adams made introductory remarks and congratulations. Also during the ceremony, Salutatorian Dylan

Finazzo, Valedictorian Jamie Mazza and senior class president Cerra Ebbecke all gave speeches focusing on their experiences at Connetquot High School and the challenges and rewards that await each graduate. The ceremony provided an opportunity for the District to congratulate the students on their educational journey and encourage them to strive for greatness in their future endeavors.

Honored for Excellence Shortly before the seniors became the latest alumni of the BayportBlue Point School District, the board of education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera honored six outstanding members of the Class of 2016 for their achievements at the annual “Recognition of Excellence Program” event. These students were selected by a committee of teachers and administrators at the high school from a list of nominees summited by the entire faculty. Criteria for selection included: service to the school and community; respect for fellow students; strong moral character; academic achievement; commitment and appreciation of school ideals; participation in school activities; and one’s ability to express him/ her self. The honorees in turn each selected three staff members who had a positive influence on their

education. “Ms. Felice was the first teacher to inspire my love of math in sixth grade,” said Jason Guinta. “Ms. Mulgrave has been more than a coach or teacher to me, she has become a life mentor and I know I can count on her and go to her for anything,” said Nora Wilke. Hats Off to the Class Blanketing the front lawn of Bayport-Blue Point High School, parents, family members and friends gathered together to celebrate the Class of 2016 during a commencement ceremony on June 25th. Retiring board of education members Leonard Camarda and James March received commemorative BayportBlue Point High School diplomas in recognition of their years of service to

the school community and volunteerism. Before each graduate received his or her official diploma, many scholars were presented with Honor Medallions for achieving a GPA of at least 90 percent. Following tradition, the students took part in a ceremonial turning of the tassels and joyfully tossed their caps high into the summer air.
