Students developed, designed, built, and tested their respective products in their engineering class. “This was a very challenging task for my students and they all met it head on with spectacular results. They utilized everything they’ve learned, including the engineering design process, a universal problem-solving method used by engineers the world over, in addition to high-tech equipment,” said Ed Moloney, Engineering teacher. “Their product ideas and designs are their own, which each meet a need in today’s world.”

A team of four students developed and patented an electronicsfree speaker, which contains no circuitry and employs acoustics to clearly amplify music and sound emitted from a cell phone. Another student designed a virtual reality software program that utilizes a cell phone app. This technology can be use by various manufacturers for numerous purposes, such as physical therapy and personal training. Engineering students at the LI Academy recently delivered their capstone project presentations, which embody two years of engineering studies. This culminating assignment showcases the engineering and deductive reasoning skills they’ve cultivated during their two years in the program, which they used to conceptualize, design, and construct a product of their own. In attendance at the presentation were Eastern Suffolk BOCES administrators, engineering program alumni, representatives from Long Island-based tech companies, and Brookhaven National Lab. Robotics Team Honored On Tuesday afternoon at the General meeting in Riverhead, Legislator Tom Muratore, Legislator Leslie Kennedy, and Legislator Bill Lindsay (D-Holbrook) had the opportunity to honor the Sachem Robotics Team 263 known as Aftershock. For the third year in a row, Team 263 attended the FIRST World Championships in St. Louis, Missouri to compete against the best robotics teams in the world.
Aftershock has continued to be successful, earning its invitation to participate in the Championships after winning the SBPLI Long Island Regional at Hofstra University. Aftershock won this competition with a tiebreaking third round in the Finals. One member in particular, Robert Wentzel, won the prestigious Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at Hofstra. The Sachem Robotics Team 263 also had competed at the South
Florida Regional in West Palm Beach Florida, where they ranked 15 out of the 47 worldwide teams present. “I am extremely proud of what these students are able to accomplish,” said Legislator Kennedy. “I am amazed by the engineering principles these young men and women use while designing their robots and competing in the U.S. FIRST Robotics Competition.”

“For as long as I can remember, I knew that I was passionate about music,” said Baio. “Making music allows me to express who I truly am and what I can become. The opportunity to sing with several outstanding ensembles has made becoming a Broadway performer not just a dream, but a goal.” Baio plans to pursue a degree in Theater Performance at Wagner College in the fall.

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire
Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

All fourth-grade classes at Blue Point Elementary School recently extended their knowledge of plant life by working together to construct a hydroponic garden tower. Prior to the construction of the system, the students studied the responses to seeds and seedlings to varying environmental conditions, including pole beans, which were grown
in the traditional way using soil, water and sunlight. Students worked together using various tools such as wrenches and levels to construct the plant tower, tomato cage and install lights essential for healthy plant growth. After the assembly, they transplanted the bean plants to the garden tower, washing away excess dirt and leaving just the roots
exposed. They were also able to test and regulate the pH balance to maximize the growth of the plants. Additionally, students discussed and researched the pros, cons and other methods of growing plants. In doing so, they discovered plants can be grown many different ways to adapt to specific environmental constraints.
End-of-Year Recognitions The Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education capped off the 2016-2017 school year during its late June meeting with a number of celebratory student recognitions. To begin the night’s recognitions, the talented students of various district elementary schools were presented with tokens of appreciation for their beautiful poems which
were submitted to the Walt Whitman Poetry Contest. C-Quest advisers Kevin Keane and Lisa Manzo congratulated students Ben Camean, Cristian Martinez, Emily Schropfer and Olivia Oechslin for their contributions. Additionally, Idle Hour Elementary School student Tessa Burke was named the Grand Champion of the Grade 3 and 4 Category for her lovely poem, which

was recited by Mrs. Manzo. Additionally, Cherokee Street Elementary School fifth-grade student Brandon Ziegler was presented with a certificate by the board of education for tying in fourth place in the Sumdog National Summer Math Contest, an accomplishment exemplified as he was one of 147,000 students taking part in this contest.

Certifications Received
Four students from the Islip Career Center Welding Program recently earned advanced industry certifications. These qualifications make these students extremely attractive to potential employers and unions as their skills are that much more marketable. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. Each student attained a 3G welding certification and one of the four also achieved a 4G certification. The 3G and 4G certifications mean the bearer is certified in vertical and overhead welding, respectively, two difficult positions in which to weld because the metal is not directly in front of you. Pipe joints are going to be at eye level or higher,
even over your head, and often on thick metal (up to 10 inches). The welder must learn to weld against gravity and master a new set of skills and techniques to accomplish this. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar ordered the material and administered the test to her interested students after practicing in class, and submitted the finished product to MT Group, the certifying organization based in Farmingdale. They then gave the welded material a strict qualifications test. “This is the first time anyone in all of Eastern Suffolk BOCES has earned this certification as a student,” said Terhaar. “This was a huge goal of mine. When I graduated, these certifications were my entry way into every job. My students can pass tests and here is the proof.” Next year Terhaar plans
to have even more students pass the 3G and 4G certifications and prepare students to take the Pipe Weld / 6G certification exam. This is the most difficult certification to obtain and is considered the gold standard in the industry. Additionally, two of these students were each awarded checks for $600 from the recently established Robert Vetter Memorial Fund to purchase equipment at AWISCO, a welding supply company. These items and materials will assist them during the launch of their new careers. Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar and School Nurse Alicia Anderson helped raised the money and AWISCO matched their contributions. The memorial fund honors the late Robert Vetter, Terhaar’s welding teacher and mentor.
Connetquot Commencement Connetquot High School held its graduation commencement ceremony on June 22nd, as hundreds of family, friends and distinguished guests joined the seniors in commemorating their final day as students of the Connetquot Central School District. After being introduced by the Connetquot High School Band, a display of colors from the Bohemia Fire Department Color Guard and a lovely rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner” by the Connetquot High School Senior Chorus, Principal Kenneth J. Costa welcomed the attendees and thanked them for their overwhelming support of the graduating class and wished the students well
with all of their future endeavors. Afterward, the top 25 students were recognized and personally congratulated by Mr. Costa and 12th-grade Assistant Principal Michael Moran for their outstanding accomplishments. Class of 2017 salutatorian Anthony Mannino delivered a heartwarming speech, stating, “What I see before me is a group of individuals who possess a blank slate in the real world - they can be whatever they want to be, and they can achieve whatever they want to achieve.” A d d i t i o n a l l y, valedictorian Mit Patel reflected on the class’s collective high school experience. “Do not forget that the majority
of learning doesn’t come from classrooms. While we learn formulas, theorems and other definitions, what’s perhaps most important is what we learn from each other, from our teachers and from our environment.” After thoughtful speeches regarding the students’ achievements and hopes for their continued success in the future from New York State Senator and Connetquot alumnus Thomas Croci, Connetquot High School Class President Anthony Melfi and board trustee Milynn Augulis, the students walked across the stage and received their diploma, signifying the start of a new life journey.
