July’s Charity of the Month:

Coastal Steward Long Island an understanding of the impact pollution has on our ocean and learn ways to have a positive impact on our marine environment.

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards.

As a non-profit that operates 100% by volunteers, Coastal Steward Long Island feels they can never have enough people to volunteer. If you would like to help keep our island home to some of the most beautiful and top-rated beaches in America, then consider volunteering with CSLI! They take volunteers to help with beach cleanups, planting oysters, collecting relevant data, maintaining tanks, releasing into the harbor and office work.

Lastly, they help restore by partnering with the Town of Brookhaven to run a restoration Throughout the month of July, I will program where they grow oysters present various ways that you can and seed local harbors. They help those at Coastal Steward Long strive to establish a self-sustaining Island to preserve, educate and population of oysters in Long take action! Island’s harbors.

CSLI helps educate others through their marine education program, which brings students to visit the Marine Environmental Stewardship Center at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. Students will gain hands on experiences so they can understand the local marine ecology. They help preserve by leading cleanups in local communities to prevent marine debris from contaminating our beaches and injuring local wildlife through preservation efforts. Through working with businesses, community groups, schools and local government, they bring volunteers out for a day on the beach, where they gain

The Heart of the Matter “I became a journalist to come as close as possible to the heart of the world.” ~ Henry Luce As I sit here at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon composing my thoughts for this column, one can’t help but reflect upon the latest in a long line of tragic shootings to touch the nation, this time at the headquarters of the Capital Gazette, an Annapolis newspaper founded in 1727. Among the five fatalities were veteran editors, writers and reporters, as well as a sales assistant to the staff. To think that a random act of violence on an otherwise average day could at once shatter so many lives is quite jarring. Of course, we as a society have become all too accustomed to dealing with tragedies of this sort; places that were once deemed to be “safe” can no longer be guaranteed so. Schools, churches, movie theaters . . . the list goes on and on. Year after year, these senseless acts have invaded our

societal comfort zone, making it increasingly difficult to look the other way. There is simply no rhyme or reason to the madness and where it may strike next. Of course, being of the journalism profession and working in an office much like the one brought to its knees last Thursday, this particular incident resonates on a slightly deeper level. The sentiment expressed by one Gazette reporter in the immediate aftermath of the shooting, “I can tell you this: we are putting out a damned newspaper tomorrow,” is one that rings true for nearly every publication through history that has been faced with a measure of adversity. From storms and natural disasters to power outages, union strikes and the like, journalism is one of the few industries that seldom “stops the presses” for any reason. Just a few years ago, many local community newspapers were faced with the prospect of not publishing in the

wake of Hurricane Sandy, as the majority of Long Island remained without power in the days and weeks following. But ultimately, the need to forge ahead, to provide readers with a lifeline to their surroundings, prevailed. As promised, the Capital Gazette came out with its Friday edition, the headline “5 Shot Dead at the Capital” splashed across the front cover. Simple. And yet so far from simple. Within the paper were written articles covering the attack and photos of the victims. But perhaps most poignant was the page normally reserved for opinions and editorials, which was left blank. In the white space were the words: Today, we are speechless. This page is intentionally left blank to commemorate the victims of Thursday’s shooting at our ofﬁce. What followed were the names of the five employees who were killed, one to a line. At the end of the day, there is really not much more to say.

Check Presentation Honor Flight Long Island is presented a $1,000 from the Patchogue Elks Lodge 1323. James Vuturo to the delight of many members has been cooking Burgers for many years at the Elks. Part of the nights proceeds to be used for our local Veterans.

This year, Jim chose to donate to Honor Flight Long Island. Honor Flight Long Island honors Veterans from WWII, Korean War and Vietnam War. They honor veterans by taking them on a one day, free trip to Washington, DC.

They fly from Islip Airport to Baltimore Washington Airport and Motor Coach to the WWII Memorial, Korean Memorial, the Changing of the Guard at Arlington Cemetery and the Air Force Memorial. Thank you Jim!

PATHWAYS TO RECOVERY - Patchogue Elks received a $1,000 Gratitude Grant from the Elks National Foundation to be used for Pathway to Recover, Inc. a notfor-profit organization that provides emergency housing for families in need. Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay III presented fifteen of Suffolk County’s most outstanding students with the Character of Excellence Award this past week. The award is an acknowledgement of elementary school students who display exemplary characteristics and demonstrate the ability to grow into strong and resourceful adults. The award started with Legislator Lindsay’s father as the Presiding Officer’s Character of Excellence Award and has continued as the Suffolk County Legislator’s Character of Excellence Award. Class of 2018 salutatorian Frank Giacchetto then addressed the crowd and reminded the attendees that no matter what their path in life would be, they shared a common bond and should strive for acceptance. “The people you will be surrounded with in the future, no matter how different they may seem, all came from a very similar place,” he said. “Just try to keep this in mind no matter how different you and another person may be, you’re more similar than you can ever comprehend.” A d d i t i o n a l l y, valedictorian Kevin Polanish offered parting words of inspiration to his fellow classmates. “As the torch gets passed to us, I think we should all relax,

forget about the stress of our new responsibilities, and look forward to the opportunity of doing what makes each of us most content,” he began. “Yes, we’re all going to face obstacles sometimes, and we all live within the constraints set upon us by society in life, but never lose sight of what makes you enjoy the life you have.” After the students’ eloquent speeches, the class was presented to Dr. Hearney as fulfilling their requirements necessary for receiving a diploma, and then made their way across the stage. Class of 2018 President Melanie McGuire offered some of her own reflective remarks afterward, and then led the students in a changing of the tassels before they cheerfully tossed their caps into the air.

The June 12th, 2018 Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated multiple achievements of both students and staff alike. To begin the night’s recognitions, the fourthgrade students who were named winners in the 2018 Walt Whitman Poetry contest were first asked to recite their beautiful poems and were then presented with tokens of appreciation from the board of education for their achievement. The district congratulates to Kusumita Burle, Bethany Healy, Julia Schropfer and Kai Shapiro. John Pearl Elementary School fourth-grade student Meghan Miller was honored for being named the winner of the 2018 Internet Safety Poster Contest and was recognized

by the board for her artistic accomplishment. The students enrolled in James Longo’s fifthgrade class at Helen B. Duffield Elementary School were commended for capturing the firstplace title in Sumdog U.S. National Math Contest, successfully outscoring 1,233 other classes from across the United States. In recognition of this incredible feat, the class, along with Mr. Longo, was recognized by the board of education and presented with certificates. Connetquot High School science research teacher John Halloran was honored for earning the “Distinguished Teacher 2018” award from The Harvard Club of Long Island. In attendance to recognize Mr. Halloran for his accomplishment was

Connetquot High School Class of 2017 valedictorian and current Harvard student Mit Patel, who not only nominated Mr. Halloran for this honor but also spoke words of kindness and appreciation for his former teacher. Additionally, multiple retirees from the district who served in roles including bus driver, teacher’s assistant and custodial worker were recognized and thanked for their many years of service. The district congratulates and wishes the best to John Boylan, George Braun, Susan Cartier, John Duff, Dorothy Enright, Stephen Humsjo, Ellyn May, Deborah Mescia, Cindy Pesce, Dawn Petrarca, Linda Punicki, Barbara Sakaris, Elizabeth Salva, Liliana Scolaro, James Staer and Carl Varone.
