Eastern Suffolk BOCES District Superintendent David Wicks was recently named Educator of the Year by the Long Island Black Educators Association (LIBEA) for his statewide and regional work to promote diversity and inclusivity in public education. A few examples of Wicks’ activity involving this initiative includes working as the co-chair of the New York State Council of School Superintendents (NYSCOSS) Commission on Diversity and Inclusivity Advocacy Subcommittee, serving as co-chair of the ESBOCES Diversity and Inclusivity Task Force, and also operating as cofacilitator on the NYSCOSS Regional Diversity and Inclusivity Regional Forum held this spring at ESBOCES, which hosted 150 educators from across Long Island. David Wicks has been the district superintendent at ESBOCES since July, 2016.

at John Pearl Elementary School strengthened their knowledge of the French language by taking part in a series of helpful activities. Students learned how to properly pronounce the letters in the French alphabet, as a few even volunteered to lead the class and have them repeat the letters out loud. They also learned important phrases and greetings such
as “How Are You?”, “Please” and “Thank You,” and went around the room asking their classmates “What Is Your Name?” in the foreign language. The district would like to thank foreign language instructors Katie Goldacker, Ashley LeFevre, Yasaman Soroush and Lauren Farrell for bringing world languages into the after-school setting for the students to enjoy.

techniques, mediums and the many categories of art. The vibrant display was attended by fellow classmates, teachers, members of administration, members of the board of education, family and friends who were led throughout the art exhibit by the talented artists.

Rebuilding Together Long Island
Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received help from Rebuilding Together Long Island. Recently the organization received a letter of thanks for all their help that was extremely touching. The sender wrote, “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and
he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.” With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Engineering Students Present Capstone Projects

Seniors at the STEM High School at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology recently presented their capstone projects. The projects come as an end to two years of intensive engineering studies and are a graduation requirement for all second year Engineering students. The STEM High School is part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. Students presented to Academy administrators, industry experts, and representatives from local colleges on solutions that showed creativity, innovation, and problem solving abilities. Their projects aimed to find common problems and pose new solutions for them. Joseph DiBiasi,
Comsewogue UFSD, worked to implement a hydrogen fuel cell that converted water to hydrogen gas that could be used in a car engine. He built a prototype that included a water bubbler and hydrogen fuel cell that connected to a lawnmower engine. Justin Rosado, Connetquot CSD, sought to battle temporary blindness caused by highdefinition headlights when driving at night. He showed how a car windshield could be built out of a material that blocked blue light – ensuring that drivers would be protected from strong headlights. Hunter Fleming, Shoreham-Wading River CSD, aimed to create a more realistic walking experience for amputees by revolutionizing the way prosthetic limbs are made. He tested many materials and found one more flexible and durable than those
currently used in prosthetic manufacturing. Students presented their prototypes and explained how their new inventions could change the world. They answered questions about their designs, and described their inspiration and research. Each student used cost comparisons to show how their innovations could be implemented at a low cost to consumers and manufacturing, incentivizing the use of the innovations. “These students have been working so hard on this for two years,” said Sabrina Oliver, Engineering teacher at the STEM High School. “You sometimes forget that they’re regular high school students. They’re brilliant and dedicated, but then they sometimes sleep late – and you remember they’re still students.”
PSEG Women Employees Build Homes For Families More than 40 PSEG Long Island women employees joined Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County at a Mastic Beach site to help renovate the property for a future homeowner. Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County is one of nearly 300 Habitat organizations nationwide that hosted Women Build projects in May. “PSEG Long Island is excited to represent some of the nearly 300 women on Long Island who volunteered this year,” said Brigitte Wynn, director of revenue operations and executive sponsor of PSEG Long Island’s Women’s Network. “We are committed to working with and supporting the communities in which we serve. This was a great opportunity for women of all skill levels to come together to help a family build a stable place they
can call home and have a positive impact on generations to come.” The Women Build program provides a femalefriendly opportunity that empowers women to take leadership roles and learn new skills while building a home with/for a family in need. Women Build is supported by diverse groups of women who join together to raise funds and build. “National Women Build Week is an opportunity for the women of Suffolk County to come together to work and learn vital home building and maintenance skills, while helping to improve the lives of other families and the communities of Long Island,” said Les Scheinfeld, director of development, Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk County. “We are so grateful for these dedicated volunteers who are giving their time and talents to

The Special Career Education students in Jill Hamill’s Food Prep class at Bixhorn Technical Center recently studied the importance of eating fish that are indigenous to our region in an effort to practice sustainability. The class went fishing for porgies and sea robins, which are often viewed as “trash” fish because the edible portion of meat is small and considered not worth the effort involved to get it off the bones. However, these species are plentiful in our local waterways. Students caught them during a fishing expedition and
learned to cook them in a variety of ways in class the next day. The Food Prep class is part of the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Special Career Education Program. The program provides employment skills to students with special education needs, which may enable them to gain entry-level employment in certain industries. Food Prep Teacher Jill Hamill demonstrated how to whole roast porgies with lemon, garlic, herbs, and bacon, and to deep fry sea robin, whole, with a seasoned flour dredge. Students also used cod,
another plentiful local fish, to learn the French technique of en papillote, where food is steamed in a parchment paper pouch with vegetables. Additionally, they also prepared sautéed cod in a chorizo-mussel broth to showcase another method. Said Hamill, “Teaching students to practice sustainability by learning to prepare food that is available locally not only benefits the environment and expands their repertoire, but it also helps to make them realize that it is okay to challenge preconceived notions about food.”
Baseball Team Honored The highly successful Connetquot High School varsity baseball team, along with coach Rob Burger, were honored at the June 17 All-County Baseball Banquet, held at Villa Lombardi’s banquet hall in Holbrook. During the ceremony, Mr. Burger, the team and individual student-athletes were recognized for their efforts this season. Joe Zimmerman received the Ray Nelson Courage Award and was named to the All-Long Island team; Joe Savino was awarded the Paul Gibson Award as the best pitcher in Suffolk County; Matt BrownEiring was named the
Suffolk County Playoff Most Valuable Player; Joe Savino, Josh McGee and Matt Goodis were named to the All-Suffolk County team; Derek Yalon, Alex Ungar and Matt BrownEiring were named to the All-League team; Coach Rob Burger was named Suffolk County Coach of the Year, and League II Coach of the Year; The Connetquot High School varsity baseball team received the Robert A. Collotta Memorial Cup as Suffolk County Class AA Champions as well as the 2019 Suffolk County League II Champions. The team finished their season with an

impressive 21-6 record as Suffolk County League II Champions, and went on to win the Suffolk County AA Championship. In Coach Rob Burger’s first season as head coach, he took a 16-10 team, and put together a championshipcaliber “family” that made their community proud of their achievements. Coach Burger thanked the players, parents and community for their efforts and support this season, and also wanted to thank assistant coaches Dwayne Page and Frank Staib for their positive influence on the program.

Slocum Elementary School recently presented their own telling of the popular Arnold Lobel book, “Mouse Soup,” for attending family members and friends after months of rehearsing their lines in the classroom setting. In the play, a clever mouse tells a trickster weasel four silly stories about bees, stones, loud crickets and a thorn bush in an effort to distract him. The speech-language department at Sachem High School North recently hosted an inspiring celebration in honor of disability awareness that showcased the courageousness of 12 incredible students. For more than 15 years, students from the speechlanguage program have delivered heartwarming speeches outlining the
struggles they have faced throughout their lives. In front of an audience of parents, faculty and fellow students, the speakers shared inspirational messages about how they overcame adversity to reach their goals both academically and in other aspects of their lives. “Your disabilities do not define who you are. It is only you who defines you,”
senior Christina Aurisano said. “Other people perceive you; they do not define you.” The student presenters concluded their speeches by sharing their plans for the future and some hopeful words of encouragement for their peers who may also face adversity.

Fundraiser For ALS Research teammates were able to engage in fun and friendly competition in the school’s gymnasium for a few hours. Dozens of students put their skills to the test as they played the popular backyard game, which was created by Josh Bonventre and Kevin Texeira, both of Long Island. As a result of the fundraiser, the students raised $1,000 to

Wenonah Celebrates Flag Day Friends and family recently gathered at Wenonah Elementary School’s cafetorium in the Sachem Central School District for a patriotic ceremony and a presentation by third grade students honoring the extensive history and
heritage of the American flag. As part of the patriotic display, students dressed in red, white and blue read poetry that included facts about the American flag. Students also performed a collection of patriotic songs such as the national
anthem, “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “God Bless America.” Concluding the ceremony, a group of students performed a flag-folding display before students exited the cafetorium to the song “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”
Celebrating Flag Day Students, staff members, parents and first responders from Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary recently joined one another to celebrate Flag Day on June 14. Organized by physical education instructor John Zambriski, the sidewalks outside the school building were filled with patriotic images of the flag, as well as those of the first responders. Students and staff members dressed in their red, white
and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang patriotic songs around the school’s flag pole. In addition, members of the Slocum Elementary School band entertained the audience with upbeat patriotic music throughout the course of the celebration. Joining the staff and students were local first responders, one U.S. Naval Officer and two Vietnamera veterans. After the flagraising ceremony, many of the guests visited the
classrooms to talk to students about their dedication to the community they serve. It was Mr. Zambriski’s hope that the students would recognize the honorable service these professionals provide, and show their appreciation for that dedication. Edith L. Slocum Elementary School Principal John Delio thanked the students for their attention, as well as Mr. Zambriski for planning such a wonderful program for the annual Flag Day celebration.

Taking Steps Toward Middle School Connetquot’s Idle Hour Elementary School celebrated an important educational milestone in the lives of this year’s fifth grade class with a moving up ceremony on June 25. Held at Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School, the event earmarked the end of the 36 graduates’ elementary
school years and the beginning of their journey through middle school. During the ceremony, each student was introduced and presented with a certificate representing the successful completion of their elementary school requirements, along with special awards.
In addition to the proud family members and educators in attendance, John Allen, the district’s assistant to the superintendent, and Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III took part in the program and congratulated the new middle school students.
Community Concert The Connetquot High School Music Department recently hosted the second annual Concert Choir Community Concert at the Parish of the Holy Cross in Nesconset, inviting current students, alumni and distinguished guests to engage in an afternoon of beautiful music. The event boasted
an astounding lineup, consisting of the current Connetquot High School Concert Choir, 73 alumni, and guest singers from both Ronkonkoma and Oakdale-Bohemia middle schools. According to director Brad Drinkwater, he was blown away by the alumni response and
their enthusiasm put forward in the rehearsals leading up to weekend performance. Between the high school choir students, alumni choir, and guest singers from both RMS and OBMS, nearly 100 singers performed 13 pieces of choral music with sophistication and sensitivity for all to enjoy.

Annual Mini Marathon
Sweat, smiles and friendly competition were on display at the recent Chippewa Mini Marathon in the Sachem Central School District, where students, staff and family members ran in the annual race in honor of two former Chippewa students, Grace Peshkur and Josh Mileto. For 12 years, the daylong event rich in tradition has drawn enthusiastic crowds of family and friends as they cheered on each grade level
as they ran their designated course. Wearing their minimarathon shirts donated by the PTA, fourth and fifth grade students completed a full-mile course; the other grade levels ran a shorter distance. Additionally, parents, teachers and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kenneth Graham joined in on the day’s excitement as they completed the course. “Each year the enthusiasm has grown from the kids,”
second grade teacher and event organizer Mary Bernhard said. “Students talk about setting goals, beating times and trying to do better than they did last year. What I have noticed over the years is the camaraderie that the students show for one another. Students hop on the Energy Bus Filling out the school’s gymnasium, staff and students from Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Blue Point Elementary School recently joined together to introduce their participation in “The Energy Bus”
program. The Energy Bus program, which is based off the popular book by Jon Gordon, was incorporated into the school’s curriculum in an effort to increase the already highly positive
school culture, and to inspire and develop leaders who positively impact the school community as a whole. As the students “ride” the Energy Bus together, they are asked to follow a set of guidelines, outlining
all of the positive aspects of their lives, including responsibility, celebrating their talents and gift, and avoiding bullying at all costs. During the ceremony, students were called up by grade level to showcase
their appreciation for the Energy Bus program, as they displayed a number of skits and songs for all to enjoy. Prior to the conclusion of the Energy Bus Showcase, students recited the program’s student pledge
in unison, led by Blue Point Elementary School Principal Tara Falasco, taking the positive feeling of the assembly back with them in the classroom.
