great day of golf, food and fun, at one of Long Island’s top golf venues. The honoreee for this year’s outing is Mr. Joe Gathard, a noted business & community leader. Joe Gathard is vice president of All Service Electric, lnc. a leading electrical contracting firm on Long lsland serving businesses, schools and municipalities. A graduate Cadet Captain from La Salle Military Academy in Oakdale, Joe was born in Valley Stream, NY where his grandparents were founders of the lnc. Village of Valley Stream in 1925. His love for community service and politics kept Joe busy as a Valley Stream volunteer fireman. His experiences with Rescue Company lead him to a post with Nassau County Police as a MedicalTechnician working on both ambulances and rescue helicopters. He was elected and served two terms as a Village Trustee in Valley Stream and worked for the House of Representatives under Congressman Ray McGrath. Joe’s dad founded the family electrical business after World War ll where just about the whole family spent some time working. Then Joe’s oldest brother and he took the company to the next level acquiring other electrical businesses. Today the family business still thrives with him and his partner Donna earning All Service Electric a reputation offering service second to none. While his son Justin attended NY Maritime College, Joe again became involved and served as President of the Parents Association and Ex-Officio of the Fort Schuyler Alumni Association and Foundation. During that time as a member of AFE Chapter 4, Joe helped establish the NY Maritime College Student Chapter which has led to internships and jobs for young talented cadets in the facilities industry. Joe continues to pay it forward as he is currently
serving his third year as the president of the Long lsland Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association, is a member of the Electrical lndustry Board of Nassau and Suffolk Counties and is an employer trustee for l.B.E.W. Local 25 Health and Benefit Fund. Joe lives in Middle lsland, NY with his wife MaryEllen, they have two grown children and three grandchildren. Joe truly illustrates the saying “if you need something done ask a busy person”. Center Dedication With more than $1 million in gifts from those who believe in Father Tom’s dream and another $1 million in matching funds from Jim and Marilyn Simons and the Simons Foundation, the Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research at Stony Brook University has a healthy beginning. “In this first round of funding, the Hartman Center will support two investigators who were previously studying Parkinson’s disease, and welcomes 10 established investigators who are new to the field of Parkinson’s disease research,” said President Stanley. “Their research covers new ground both in
basic science and in clinical applications to increase the quality of life for those afflicted with the disease.” The Center’s lead researchers include Leslie “Craig” Evinger, a widely published and highly regarded Stony Brook neuroscientist who is already revolutionizing the study of
Parkinson’s, and Professor Lorna Role, co-director of the Institute for Advanced Neuroscience and department chair, who examines a broad range of neurodegenerative disorders. The Hartman Center will provide a hub where they, as well as other researchers, scientists, medical experts, students and clinicians can think, experiment, and most importantly, collaborate as they work to translate discoveries in basic science into practical solutions for Parkinson’s patients. Current research is already showing promising new developments. President Stanley, a physician, noted that the cause of Parkinson’s disease is the death of a specific group of neurons in the brain. An explanation for why these neurons die is that there is too much calcium coming into the neurons through a special opening in their membrane. Drs. Lonnie Wollmuth and Mark Bowen propose to identify a molecular signature for this opening to enable them to block the calcium inflow to rescue the dying neurons. Additionally, Drs. Hoi-Chung Leung and Christine DeLorenzo propose to use new human brain imaging techniques to characterize changes in brain structure that affect planning and reasoning in Parkinson’s patients. “With reductions in government spending, private philanthropy is becoming even more important to advance critical research,” said Dexter Bailey, Vice President for University Advancement. “Thanks to the innovative research ongoing at Stony Brook University and the leadership of the Hartman Foundation, the Center now has a permanent home and the fight against Parkinson’s disease will continue.” “Father Tom never said ‘no’ to anyone,” said Ernie Canadeo. “Now no one is saying ‘no’ to him, to his legacy. Stony Brook is the perfect place to make Father Tom’s dream a reality.”

The Thomas Hartman Center for Parkinson’s Research in the Stony Brook University Department of Neurobiology and Behavior was dedicated during a ceremony in the Center on June 13th, and named in honor of Monsignor Thomas Hartman, beloved priest, Emmy Award-winning television and radio personality, and champion for countless good causes. “Father Tom,” as he is often referred, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2004. True to his character, say his friends, he thought of his diagnosis as a gift and immediately established a foundation to raise funds to support Parkinson’s disease research. From 2004 to 2012, the Thomas Hartman Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, whose board of directors included Stony Brook alumnus Ernie Canadeo, raised about $1 million each year, awarding grants to a variety of researchers, institutions and initiatives. As Father Tom’s health began to deteriorate, it became clear the Foundation would not be sustainable. Having reconnected with his alma mater and realizing the powerful research university Stony Brook had become – and its particular expertise in the neurosciences – Canadeo suggested establishing the Thomas Hartman Center at Stony Brook, an idea wholeheartedly supported by Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD, and others at the University. “The idea came with a challenge,” said Canadeo. “We needed to raise $1 million to establish the Center at Stony Brook. If we did so, the gift would be doubled through a matching gift from Jim and Marilyn Simons.” With an inner circle of Father Tom’s friends stepping forward to make philanthropic gifts at a kickoff dinner held in April 2012, the fundraising received a tremendous head start: $500,000. A gala held in October, attended by more than 500 people and Father Tom himself, elevated the fundraising beyond its $1 million goal.

Six Long Island High School seniors were recognized for their exceptional writing contributions for the first annual Long Island Authors Group (LIAG) Scholarship Writing Contest. The LIAG launched this first annual scholarship writing contest several months ago, which was open to high school seniors in two Long Island School Districts: the Sachem School District and the Bellmore-Merrick School District. Candidates who participated were given a guideline of 500-700 words and asked to write an essay based on the topic/ question, “What Long Island personality, past or present, living or dead, has most affected your life and your life’s mission?” After the LIAG scholarship committee evaluated many essay contributions, two finalists were chosen and four students received “Honorable Mention” for their submissions. Stony Brook University in collaboration with the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Center for Severe Weather Research in Boulder, CO, is hosting and participating in the DREAMS (Doppler Radar for Education And Mesoscale Studies) project, a three-week National Science Foundation-funded endeavor to study storms, sea breezes and other weather phenomena
around the New York City (NYC) and Long Island area. The project, led by Dr. Brian Colle, a Professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook, is utilizing the Doppler on Wheels 6 (DOW 6), a truck equipped with a Doppler weather radar and a set of weather instruments that can be deployed in the field (a “pod”). A research (Long – EZ) aircraft piloted by

The project kicked off at Stony Brook University on June 17th with an open house and seminar with Drs. Joshua Wurman and Karen Kosiba of the Center for Severe Weather Research and of the former Discovery Channel show “Storm Chasers.” During the presentation, Drs. Wurman and Kosiba explained how the Doppler on Wheels truck works and some of their experiences in the Great Plains studying tornado motion and evolution and on the coast studying small-scale wind structures within hurricanes.
Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is calling for volunteers to learn and implement crisis intervention through texting! While texting is often looked at as a recreational way to communicate, the Crisis Center recognizes its importance in facilitating in-the-moment support and help to those in need and in critical situations. If you are skilled in texting, then your skills are important and wanted! The first step is to become a Counselor Assistant. This free orientation training
program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. July’s training will be held on 3 successive Tuesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on July 9th, 16th and 23rd. August’s training will be held on 3 successive Wednesday evenings from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on August 7th, 14th and 21st. This project marks the first time a high-resolution Doppler radar can be brought up close to the action to zoom in on Long Island’s local weather phenomena. “Students have the opportunity to operate the Doppler radar, launch weather balloons, deploy a weather instrument pod in the field, take weather observations with their vehicles and help with daily weather briefings for field operations,” said Professor Colle. The research team is operating the DOW 6 to measure: the change in thunderstorm winds and precipitation intensity near the coast, the depth and inland movement and speed of the sea breeze, and how a strong low-level jet called the New York Bight Jet develops near the south shore of New York City due to the strong regional temperature gradients between the sea and land, and the small-scale precipitation structures associated with flooding

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed. Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later. Normal? What’s that? Sleeping in your own bed? Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny
how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine. What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon. I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of
our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good. Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it. They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

On June 18th, Chad Vanderslice, President, Westhampton Beach Rotary Club, presented a check to Camp Pa-QuaTuck Board Members Laura Dunathan and Newt Homan in the amount of $5,000 to be used for the camp’s scholarship fund. This presentation took place at the Rotary Club’s meeting at Jonesey’s Restaurant in Westhampton Beach. The money was raised
through a series of fundraisers held by the Rotary Club. Thanks to the Rotary Club’s generosity, the amount raised will allow more than seven special-needs children to attend Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck this summer. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. Its mission is to help children and adults achieve equality,

Bayport-Blue Point School District’s fifth- and eighth-graders celebrated their promotions to middle and high school during commemorative moving up ceremonies at the end of June. Surrounded by their family, friends and teachers, the students took part in the traditional ceremonies by reflecting on their years spent at their respective buildings, performing a number of songs and proudly crossing
the stage to receive their moving up certificates. “It seems like just yesterday that your children entered the doors of Blue Point Elementary School as little kindergartners full of excitement and possibilities,” said the school’s principal, Diana Ketcham. “As the years went by, wonderful friendships were formed, important lessons were learned and today, those same boys and girls now
stand before us as young ladies and gentlemen, full of promise and potential, ready to enter our middle school and begin a new and exciting phase in their lives.” In addition to the certificates of promotion, several students were also honored during their school’s ceremony for the academic and characterfocused efforts they have put forth during their time in the building.
This week, I am attending Boys State, a highly selective program for some of New York’s most promising leaders. These 1,000 boys will compete in a “mockgovernment” where we will learn about how our democratic system works. While there, every boy will be vying for the role of governor. Throughout the week, these high school juniors will campaign to achieve their goal of election. For many of these kids, it is their first taste of freedom. It is their first time away from home. This pressure could lead to homesickness, and ultimately the most difficult experience of
their lives so far. Some will crack under this immense pressure. Others will find it to be a support. Any way you slice it, this Marine-driven week will prove to be a struggle for every single kid involved. The long hours, the politics and the desire to return may be too much for some. Our bags are packed but are we ready? I don’t know for sure that I am, but I intend to find out. As we compete from the city level to the county level and ultimately at the state level, our desperation for success will increase. I hope to win the entire program, but there are no guarantees. Every
other boy embarking upon the same journey feels the same way about his chances. It is going to be a struggle not being able to communicate with my family; there are no cellphones allowed. Hopefully, my time at the American Legion Boys State Program will afford me the opportunity to join a second family. As one of the boys sponsored by the Police Benevolent Association of Suffolk County, I feel a lot of pressure to bring the title of Governor home. In doing so, I would be the first winner from Long Island in over twenty years. I hope to succeed, and I plan to make you all proud.

Pre-K Graduation
Eager pre-kindergarten students, parents, grandparents and siblings shared a very exciting milestone on May 14th at the Edith L. Slocum Elementary School. School Principal Mr. John Delio welcomed family members to the school’s annual PTA-run, Pre-K Commencement Ceremony! Held in the school’s colorfully decorated dining room, Mr. Delio joined the proud parents and siblings as they stood to congratulate the nine young ‘graduates’ entering the room to the sounds of up-tempo ‘graduation’ music. Mr. Delio congratulated each of the graduates, and their parents, and they completed this year’s program and look forward to September and Kindergarten.
Mr. Delio thanked the parents for their support, but singled out members of the Slocum ParentTeacher Association (PTA) which is totally responsible for the school’s Pre-K program. Delio thanked the three primary PTA/ teachers Danielle Mallon, Jennifer Fleischauer, Donna Monahan and organization president Jennifer Pasquarella, as well as Mrs. Casey and Mrs. Barry. “This Pre-K program is the only one in the Connetquot School District run by the members of the school’s PTA”, said Ms. Fleischauer. Mr. Delio reminded the audience that this Pre-K program has been offered to community students for over 20 years. “Our children have access to Kindergarten classrooms in the building, as well as
the library and computer lab. These youngsters adjust to Kindergarten sooner, and more comfortably, because they are already familiar with their surroundings,” said Mr. Delio. Students attend class one day per week from October through May and learn to work, and play, together. During the year students are exposed to numbers, counting, letters, words, shapes, and the creative arts. Mr. Delio believes that this Pre-K program helps to build a strong connection between the PTA, the school and the Slocum community. Congratulations to the 2013 Pre-K graduating class of the Edith L. Slocum School! That would make this group part of the 2025 Connetquot High School graduating class!

HISTORICAL SOCIETY GRANT - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco presented the Greater Patchogue Historical Society with a check for $10,000, which represents County funding Calarco secured for the organization. According to Steve Lucas, Treasurer for the Historical Society, the group intends to spend the funding on the design, printing and distribution of a large reference map of the Patchogue area showing past and present historic structures with captions about each site, the construction and placement of two or more historic markers at appropriate locations, the purchase a laptop computer and projector to allow for portable historic presentations and for the inventory of the Society’s artifacts.
Restoring Oyster Population
On Friday, May 31st, Connetquot HS students measured and placed thousands of oysters in rafts for seeding at Long Beach, in the town of Smithtown. Students participating in the Connetquot High School Mariculture Program, along with advisors Lori Forgione and John Nielsen, have been working on a year-long reseeding project designed to restore the oyster, & clam, population to the Long Island Sound and Great South Bay. According to Mrs. Forgione, “ this year our students will be growing oysters because the clams were too small to seed and
harvest. The students will still monitor the rafts and take care of the oysters in the summer, and expect to harvest them in October. Members of Connetquot’s Clam Program have been working alongside Western Suffolk BOCES environmental educator Amity Bintliff, and Kathy McShane representing the Town of Smithtown. Together with Mrs. Forgione and Mr. John Nielsen, the students learned even more about the anatomy, history, and reproductive cycles of oysters, and clams. Students also learned about the decline of the mariculture populations
in the waters around Long Island, due to algae blooms from runoff of fertilizers, pesticides, pollution, and overharvesting. Mrs. Forgione would like to thank the members of the Connetquot Clam Program for their yearlong commitment to the program. Mrs. Forgione also extended her gratitude to the members of the Connetquot School District Board of Education for their financial support of the program, as well as the members of Western Suffolk BOCES for their technical support.

Themed “The Noble, the Notable and the Notorious of the 1800s,” the event called for students to research a historical individual of the 19th century and use their findings to write an informative speech about that person. The program not only
served to complement the grade level’s curriculum, it also encouraged the students’ continued philanthropic efforts. For the wax museum, the students remained perfectly still until a visitor made them “come to life” by dropping coins into small donation boxes located next to their display. The money collected was donated to the organization Land &

Sea, which coordinates and provides athletic and outdoor experiences for autistic children. Through the classes’ efforts, $378.75 was raised for this program. In addition, students Madison Waters and Emma Woolsey ran a lemonade stand over the weekend, contributing another $62 for a grand total of $440.75.

The trip was first facilitated a number of years ago when owner and district parent Yasha Kazowicz extended the opportunity for students to experience a French meal at the local establishment. During their visit, the attendees enjoyed several of the restaurant’s most coveted dishes, including soups, salads, boeuf bourguignon, grilled
salmon and chicken in a spicy red pepper sauce. The desserts were equally as enjoyable and ranged from mousse au chocolat and panna cotta to a tarte Tatin. Members of the staff, who came in early to facilitate the experience, were on hand to answer any questions the students had, while the seniors reflected upon their experiences with the district program in conversations with their younger peers.
MIDDLE SCHOOL GRADUATION - Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently welcomed friends, family and staff in celebrating the graduating class of 2013 during the Moving Up ceremony. Acting principal Joseph Licato honored the graduates for their academic excellence and volunteer work while proud family members looked on. Principal Chuck Morea, currently on leave, was also in attendance to congratulate the class of 2013. The students will join OakdaleBohemia Middle School graduates at Connetquot High School in the fall.

TEACHER NOMINATED - Connetquot Central School District music teacher Valerie Jones was recently announced as one of 217 quarter-finalists out of 30,000 national nominees for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award. Jones is a veteran teacher at the District’s Slocum and Duffield Elementary Schools and was nominated by her students who recognize her hard work. If selected to win, Mrs. Jones will attend the official presentations during the week of the 2014 GRAMMY Awards in Los Angeles, CA, in January 2014. The award will also include a financial grant for the school’s music program.

Summer Sessions The Gateway Acting School begins its 2013 summer session on July 1st, at the Gateway Playhouse in Bellport. Founded by casting director Robin Joy Allan (Ghost, Lord of the Flies, Parenthood, Side Out, When Harry Met Sally), the Gateway Acting School is the educational division of The Gateway, Long Island’s oldest professional theatre, and attracts over 300 students annually. “Acting is an art form
that informs the student of other worlds and types of people,” Allan, the school’s director, said. “Focus, tolerance, empathy, motivation and self esteem are just some of the qualities that emerge. These skills are vital for an attorney, a doctor, a teacher, a psychologist, a social worker – as well as an actor.” With a 20 year history of success, the school prides itself on offering professional level training
and industry connections – with a proven track record. Alum Brendan Dooling (An Elf’s Story: Elf On The Shelf) studied in the school for nearly six years and obtained professional representation through one of the school’s frequent Manhattan talent showcases. Dooling’s television series, “The Carrie Diaries,” has been renewed for a second season on the CW network. “The journey’s never
over, but I’ve reached a place of success in my acting career and it all started at Gateway.” Dooling said, in a prior statement. Current students Alison Cordaro (“Brooklyn’s Finest”) and Rebecca Goldfarb (“Sesame Street”) have also found success. Cordaro was featured in a television commercial for Chuck E. Cheese and narrated an upcoming book by Julie Andrews. Cordaro and Goldfarb shared the
role of Susan Waverly last December in Gateway’s “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas,” at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts. Upcoming classes for July and August sessions include acting, musical theater and TV & film auditioning. Students can enroll in production classes, featuring “Charlotte’s Web,” “The Little Prince” and “Really Rosie,” as well as Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” and “Hamlet.”
