On June 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. sponsored by Sagamore Yacht Club and Oakcliff Sailing Center, hosted its Second Annual Alzheimer’s Regatta and Awards Dinner at the Sagamore Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. The regatta raised over $23,000, which will benefit Alzheimer’s Disease research and support. The highest fundraising team in the fundraising category was “Paddlers for Poker” with team captain Jean Fassino. The team raised a total of $745. The first-place winner of this year’s Regatta Sailing Race was “Rift” captained by Bill Maher. In second place was

Captain Darrin Martin’s “Commanche,” followed by “Serendiptity,” which was helmed by Bob Betensky. Dawn Riley, Executive Director, Oakcliff Sailing Center, and Board Member, US Sailing, was in attendance. Ms. Riley was the 2002 IC45 and 2007 K-Challenge America’s Cup World Champion. As CEO and Captain of America True, she was the first woman to manage an America’s Cup sailing team. Along with the race there was a Paddling for Poker event where participants paddled to five boats; at each boat, they received a card and once they received five cards, they then made

their best poker hand. The highest poker hand received an award at the dinner for their achievement. This year, The Alzheimer’s Regatta had a special treat for those who wanted to watch the Regatta and Paddling for Poker: a guided tour of historic Oyster Bay and Cold Spring Harbor aboard the Christeen, a 40-foot Gaff Rigged Sloop that was built in 1883 and completely restored in 1999. She is the oldest Oyster Sloop in America and is a National Historic Landmark. The awards ceremony was accompanied by dinner, dessert and live entertainment by The Old Salts Band, where guests enjoyed each other’s company while raising money for a good cause. Inspiration. It can come from anywhere. A song. A movie. A book. A beautiful sunset. A peaceful walk along the shoreline. Anywhere. As I sit here on yet another deadline day, scrambling to finish the last of my work for the week, I am in search of some of that inspiration for my column. Last week’s article drew perhaps some of the greatest attention on the social media circuit, as I was pleasantly surprised by numerous “likes,” “comments” and “shares” from those supporters who follow my page on

Facebook (see above). It’s amazing how a little positive feedback can provide that much-needed affirmation that, yes, you are doing something worthwhile that people appreciate. And, on that note, I do appreciate the support of you, the readers. Without an audience, words are merely diary entries, notes to self never meant to see the light of day. But with interaction, and reaction, they take on new life. Of course, it helps to actually get out from behind the desk and live life from time to time too. How else can you expect to experience

those glorious sunsets and shorelines? And summer is indeed the perfect time for all of the above. Work hard to play hard, right? Well this is the season to take those vacation days, even if it’s only to catch up on your reading or start watching a new TV series. For those more adventurous among us, take a trip to NYC, or Fire Island, or Montauk… pick a direction, and just go. Make it your mission this summer to find the inspiration that has been missing from your life. And once you find it – write about it, take pictures of it, find some new way to capture it… and savor it.

generated a total of 750 pounds of edible shark meat, which was donated to Long Island Council of Churches. More than $485,000.00 in total prize money was awarded, including custom trophies and other prizes. Ed Groppe aboard the “Reel Deal” caught a 377-pound

thresher — the heaviest catch overall — while the heaviest mako was reeled in by Charles Maurer Jr. aboard the “Alyssa Ann,” weighing in at 281 pounds. The heaviest blue shark of the tournament weighed in at 250 pounds and was caught by Paul Allegra aboard the “Helena.”

The ecosystem on Fire Island is as diverse as it is complex. Everything, from the smallest tick to the largest shark, can be found on the Fire Island National Seashore. In my six years of living on Fire Island, I have seen whales, sharks, dolphins and many other aquatic creatures. The whale sightings are very rare, but dolphins can be seen almost everyday. Sharks wash up on the beach occasionally, but you never see their dorsal fins popping up out of the water as in many popular movies. Just the other day on my way to work, I saw a small, dried shark on the sand getting pecked at by seagulls. Types of marine life aren’t the only animals making a presence on Fire Island. Birds, insects and

other land species have also been spotted. We have a myriad of bird species on Fire Island. It seems like each year, people spot a different kind of bird! Some of the aviary species that call this barrier island home include seagulls, piping plovers and ospreys. Fire Island has an overwhelming number of insects. Pound for pound, insects make up the most populous genre of life on Fire Island. Mosquitos, ticks, spiders and beetles are literally everywhere you look. Some claim that this abundance is a bad thing, but they are wrong. Insects are the backbone to a healthy ecosystem. Insects are the most crucial part of Fire Island’s environment. Deer are arguably Fire Island’s most shining feature. These fourlegged gentle giants

scare day-trippers and amaze residents. Their playful antics and distinct personalities make deer a Fire Island staple. Foxes are becoming more and more plentiful on our little island. Rummaging through garbage pails or stealthily walking the beach, these little creatures are truly wondrous. Watching these animals from your bedroom window truly gives you an understanding of what it is like to survive. Following the notorious Hurricane Sandy, our island was decimated. Now, Fire Island and its inhabitants are quickly regaining their strength. These animals will remain part of the Fire Island landscape for years to come, for us to enjoy, our kids to enjoy and their kids to enjoy.

Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps and guides novice trappers. “Fix-AFeral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 16,000 cats since it began 11 years ago. “In the past, we spent a lot of time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a kind corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense. The requests for help are increasing. We’d begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and often run out of funds by midNovember. We simply did not have enough money to keep discounts available all year. It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, or every feral or cat

colony on Last Hope’s radar. Just this week, we received a call from a 95 year old man who had a mother cat nursing kittens in his shed.” The generous grant from the ASPCA will continue to aid in the distribution of “Fix-A-Feral” vouchers so they last the entire year. At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer kittens will be born into feral colonies; thus, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and/ or ending up in shelters. The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

Stars & Stripes With the red, white and blue blanketing much of the school grounds, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students and staff members paid tribute to the American flag during a ceremonial Flag Day program at the school. During the event, the students learned about the history of Flag Day, the significance of each step

of folding a flag and the importance of honoring the nation’s symbol. Additionally, students were encouraged to take time on the nationally celebrated day to demonstrate their patriotism and pride for their country. Throughout the event, members of the AM Vets Post 111 from Patchogue assisted in raising the

school’s flag, winners of the school Flag Day poetry and poster contest were honored, and the entire school joined together to sing several patriotic songs. Additionally, Sylvan students who serve as Boy and Girl Scouts presented a visual play describing the process of “making” an American flag.

Celebrating Poetry Blue Point Elementary School first-grade students participated in an English language arts celebration as a culmination to their studies of the rainforest and the genre of poetry.

During their Song and Poetry Fest, the students performed a number of rainforest-themed songs and poems before an audience of parents and family members.

They showcased their understanding of the protected environment and highlighted a few lesser known facts about the animals that live in the area.

The Patchogue Lions Club held its fourteenth annual “Christmas In June” event on Wednesday, June 25th at Boomer’s Family Fun Center in Medford. For the ninth consecutive year, as part of its ongoing community service, Gershow Recycling sponsored the event by donating $2,500. Approximately 140 school children from seven elementary schools in the Patchogue-Medford School District were chosen to participate in this year’s event by their respective principals. Since the Patchogue Lions Club has started “Christmas in

D-Day Anniversary On Thursday, June 5th, the Connetquot Public Library held a special program in commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of D-Day. Upon discovering the letters her parents exchanged during World War II, Anita Cafferty never imagined where that discovery would lead her. As she traveled to Nuremberg, Germany and Normandy, France, walking the very same beach where her father was injured 69 years earlier, it brought her closer to a time of personal uncertainty in her father’s life and historical uncertainty in the world. Opening the program by playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata,

the piece held great significance in Anita’s life. Her parents Anthony and Jeanne Biondolillo, married over 50 years, died within seven weeks of one another. She’d played the piece at her mother’s funeral. As an only child, Anita was tasked with clearing out the contents of her parents’ large home. She decided to hold a tag sale and set up a musical scholarship with the proceeds. During this process she discovered a number of significant items and with each discovery Anita felt her parents making their presence known. On the day she found her father’s flag, a rainbow appeared. In 1991, on

the night she gave her first speech regarding the scholarship, a double rainbow appeared. The rainbows appeared each time a significant event occurred. The discovery of her father’s letters, from 1943 to 1946 told the tender love story of two people separated by time and circumstance. With humor, grace and affection the young couple shared their deep devotion in words and heart. Anita read excerpts of the letters from the time her father, First Lieutenant Anthony Biondolillo, shipped out in December of 1943. His letters were “detailed, robust and tender,” commemorating their triangle of happiness.

In an August 18, 1944 letter, Jeanne Biondolillo wrote her husband about Anita’s birth. Her father often wrote detailed letters to his new daughter telling her what kind of person he hoped she would be and how important it was to stay strong. He had a beautiful penmanship and often included sketches he drew while away. Her mother’s letters, tempered with a gentle humor, hid her fears, but always prayed for his safety and ended with strong declaration of love. The letters prompted Anita to make her own pilgrimage to the place where her father fought for our nation’s freedom, the place where young

men had given their lives and where some were still laid to rest. On a cruise, she was encouraged to tell her father’s story and passengers were struck by its significance. During a slide show, Anita showed the Normandy coast and the beach where young men stormed the beaches. She displayed her father’s numerous medals including the Purple Heart, The Victory Medal and Croix de Guerre. On September 16th, the day she walked the shores of Normandy Beach, she had no idea it was the same day her father was injured in battle. During this trip she’d met a physician from Canada who was

profoundly affected by the telling of her story. He’d had no idea that his parents, farmers, had been instrumental in supplying food for the troops. The same man wrote the simple phrase, “Thank You” in the sand and on this pilgrimage, another double rainbow appeared. Anita concluded the program with “I’ll Be Seeing You” leaving those in attendance with gratitude and thanks for those who served during those fateful days and for those who continue to serve. founding dean. Paul Schreiber, who took a buyout from Newsday in 2002 after 33 years at the paper, returned to Stony Brook in 2004 as director of the journalism minor. He became the SOJ’s undergraduate director when the school was approved. Following Schneider’s strategic plan, they developed its comprehensive multimedia curriculum and its Center for News Literacy, the pioneering program that enables students to use critical thinking skills to judge the reliability and credibility of news reports from all media, including the Web. That program

has since spread to dozens of other universities in North America and overseas. More recently, the school has added the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, the Marie Colvin Center for International Reporting and a Master of Science degree in journalism. Now in its eighth year, the Stony Brook School of Journalism has an enrollment of approximately 250 undergraduate majors and minors, and more than 220 alumni, many of whom are working in all facets of journalism.

Stony Brook School of Journalism Dean Howard Schneider and Undergraduate Director Paul Schreiber were tapped by the Press Club of Long Island (PCLI) as inaugural “Hall of Fame” inductees this week. The PCLI, which celebrated

its 40th anniversary this month, is a chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. PCLI established its new Hall of Fame this year to recognize 25 trailblazing journalists and media organization owners, living and deceased,

who have produced and promoted the highest level of journalism based on Long Island and shown leadership in the industry. It is an “evolution of PCLI’s annual lifetime achievement award and was created to celebrate the accomplishments and achievements of journalists,” according to the organization. “Howie and Paul were extraordinary journalists prior to joining Stony Brook University. They deserve this honor, and we are fortunate to have them at the helm of SUNY’s first and only School of Journalism,” said Dennis N. Assanis, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at

Stony Brook University. “Their vision, real-world experience, energy and enthusiasm have enabled the School of Journalism to grow immensely over the past eight years, and it’s no surprise that their good work has brought national acclaim to the Stony Brook campus.” After leaving Newsday as its editor in 2004 after 35 years at the paper, Schneider was invited by then-president Shirley Strum Kenny to study the possibility of launching a journalism major at Stony Brook. The journalism major and the School of Journalism, the only such school in the SUNY system, were approved in 2006, with Schneider as

Another Hole-In-One It’s Another Hole In One for Angela’s House. Despite harsh weather conditions, tickets sold out at the Indian Hills Golf Course for the Angela’s House Golf Outing. Moral was high, and the united support from friends and family could not be deterred by the morning delay due to torrential down pours.

The Golfers came out to support Angela’s House for the annual golf outing in Northport on June 9th. The 12th Annual Golf Outing was a major success for the charity and helped raise a great deal of money for medically frail children and their families across Long Island. The LeMaire family was a main sponsor for this

event. Brandon LeMaire, their son was one of the children who Angela’s House served. The Family holds a close connection with Bob Policastro, and the organization, and sponsored the event in Brandon’s memory. The event had the support of a number of corporations including TD Bank, SJS Construction, United Asset Strategies, Horan

Martello & Morrone, NSLIJ, EW Howell and the Tom Collins – Chris Panatier – 9-11 Memorial Foundation. Indian Hills Golf & Country Club did a fantastic job at the event, providing golfers with an array of activities that were enjoyed rain or shine. Along with the 18-hole game of golf, attendees enjoyed putting

tee and driving range activities, along with a complimentary breakfast, lunch and an awards dinner. Awards included a four-night stay in the Dominican Republic, a Kindle, golf equipment, sports memorabilia, electronics, gifts cards, and more. Angela’s House is a nonprofit organization that assist families caring

for children with special health needs. The charity proudly has 3 homes that offer 24-hour nursing care to medically frail children. Their new home cares for children that are dependent on ventilators to assist them with breathing. This year marked the organizations 12-year anniversary.

The Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island, has successfully received recertification as a “Treatment Center of Excellence” by the national association. The ALS Association cited the Center as having the “highest national standards of care in the management of Lou Gehrig’s disease.” To commemorate this milestone, the association awarded the Center with a $12,500 grant and a plaque marking its designation. Named in 2010 in honor of Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, the ALS Center of Excellence is one of only 34 ALS Association-certified centers in the United States and three in New York State. The Center first received certification in 2009. The Center provides comprehensive treatment for ALS patients, supportive services for patients

and their families, and carries out neuroscience research in search of new treatments, and ultimately a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease. “Stony Brook Medicine is committed to investigating the causes of this devastating disease and finding neurobiology targets that may greatly improve treatments,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine. “The Center has provided incredible care for those who suffer with ALS, and with new treatment trials we hope to advance this care to an even higher level.” “We are so proud of the longstanding commitment that Stony Brook’s ALS Center and our chapter has had together to provide excellent care and supportive services to people with ALS in the community and beyond,” said Dorine Gordon, President & CEO of the ALS Association, Greater

Gordon presented the commemorative plaque to the Center’s leadership and Christopher Pendergast. “The dream to find a cure continues,” said Pendergast, who conceived the concept of a comprehensive ALS clinic at Stony Brook 15 years ago that led to its establishment. “Stony Brook has created something special with this Center of Excellence, and its talented physicians and researchers continue to search clues that may bring us to the doorstep of that cure.” Pendergast said his Ride for Life Organization will continue to fund ALS research and clinical services at the Center. He estimated that through the proceeds from this year’s “Ride for Life” event in May, more than $150,000 will be awarded this year for the Center to help fund its ALS research programs and other initiatives.
