oung ladies from Girl Scout Troop 46 of Sayville gave their “WOW: Wonders of Water” presentation to attendees at a recent Keep Islip Clean public meeting, with each girl informing the group about the importance of a healthy marine environment. Afterwards, everyone who attended the meeting was given a tote bag that the troop designed to encourage recycling and reduce litter. Lauren Burns and Cheryl Carbonaro are the troop co-leaders.

Summer Orchestra Bayport-Blue Point students entering ninth grade or above, along with alumni and local musicians, are invited to participate in this year’s Bay Area Summer Orchestra Program. Swimming into Summer Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

PRE-K GRADUATION - The Pre-K graduation ceremonies at the Habitots Preschool and Child Care Centers in Middle Island and Medford were recently held. She currently volunteers at the Center for Environmental Research and Coastal Monitoring and also serves as an educator at the Long Island Aquarium and Exhibition Center. Caminske has also attended the Empire Girls State, 2016 Leadership Conference for High School Women as well as Brown University’s Environmental Leadership Laboratory (B.E.L.L) “Corinne is an outstanding young leader who has gone above and beyond to help others,” said Lindsay. “I am extremely grateful to have

gotten the chance to know the Caminske family and to see Corinne excel on so many levels. She is an ideal candidate for the Coast Guard Academy and I wish her the best of luck throughout her career as a member of our United States Military.” Caminske will join her brother, Kurt Jr., who is a junior at the Academy, on June 27th, just two days after graduation. While at the Academy she will study Marine Environmental Science and upon graduation will receive a Commission as an Ensign in the United States Coast Guard.

Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay honored Sayville High School senior, Corinne Caminske, at the June 21st General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature in Riverhead. Caminske has accepted an appointment to the United States Coast Guard Academy to be a member of the Class of 2020. She is the first woman from Sayville High School to earn an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy. Caminske, who will graduate with honors on June 25th, is a member of the National Honors Society as well as the Youth Committee for the

Special Thank You Servicemen and women from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard joined together for the 8th Annual Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament on Saturday, June 11th at the Smithtown Bay Yacht Club (SBYC) in Nissequogue. This year, 150 active members of the military powered out of the Smithtown Marina on 61 boats for a day of friendly competition and camaraderie - a record high for this event. The winning fish weighed in at 6 lbs 4 ozs and was caught by Smithtown Bay Yacht Club member Andy Smith. He was accompanied on the boat by his first mate, Ret. Colonial Rob Landsiedel, Major Jesse Fritz and Tech Sgt Nathan Dean from the 106th Rescue Wing - Air National Guard. Andy’s name will be added to the coveted winner’s plaque, the Ed Jakubowski Memorial Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament Award, named in honor of a great patron of Soldiers on the Sound, which is proudly displayed in the SBYC lobby. “One of the best things about the event is the people you meet. In 2010 my crew consisted of Captain Jesse Fritz, Colonel Rob Landsiedel and another 106th Rescue Wing member. Since then Jesse and I have become good friends,” said Andy Smith. He continues “each year we do well and everyone goes home with dinner but this time we decided to go for the win! That meant fishing around rocks and losing multiple rigs snagging bottom. The majority of the fleet went west but we went north and east to Crane’s neck where big fish are caught. The first fish was a 19 inch keeper and things looked promising but then the wind kicked up and we had to move to maintain the drift. On the first drift in the new spot I felt a light tug and then another, I set up on the fish and pulled a 6 lb 4 oz fish to the surface. Rob carefully netted it and we were excited. Throughout the rest of the event we kept hearing of other decent fish caught but at weigh-in we took the prize. It felt great to win but more importantly to share the victory with my crew.” Soldiers on the Sound began with breakfast and boat assignments. For some it was an introduction, for others,

a reunion. The Marines from Garden City presented the colors as the National Anthem was played. Then they were off... 61 boats paraded out the Smithtown Marina to meet up in the Smithtown Bay. At the stroke of 9 a.m., they were all off to their “secret” spots to try to reel in a “doormat” fluke. The weather cooperated until about noon, when for the first time, it rained on the Tournament. The bright and tough young military men and women were prepared and stuck it out. Soldiers, captains and first mates returned from fishing to an incredible display of the American Flag Arch provided by the Smithtown and St. James Fire Departments. Once on shore, everyone feasted on an incredible array of food including hot dogs and

hamburgers cooked by members of the Hauppauge Fire Department, a ‘low country boil’ complete with shellfish and corn and a smorgasbord of catered dishes provided by Ruland Road Deli (Melville). Every participant was eligible to win incredible prizes donated by local merchants and national corporations. The grand prize was donated by SIMRAD, who donated a NSS7 Evo2 GPS Fishfinder Combo. Additional grand prizes included custom engraved military reels from Wes Seigler at TRUTH Reels, 2 night/3 day stay at Hawks Cay Florida Keys Resort, 55” and 40” TV’s and kayaks. Other prizes included 60 fishing rod and reel combos, tickets to a Billy Joel concert along with autographed Billy Joel

CD’s and memorabilia, baseball tickets to see the Yankees and the Mets, K2 coolers, Weber grills, Bose speakers, and the list goes on. There were over 125 prizes raffled off thanks to generous donors. L&L Wholesale Bait of Bay Shore generously donated all the spearing and squid bait distributed to all the captains for the event for the second year in a row. Soldiers on the Sound Fishing Tournament began eight years ago when SBYC member and Kings Park resident Mark Garry, who was inspired by the images of war, to do something to “give back” to the local servicemen and women for their service to our country. Mark teamed up with fellow SBYC members Skip Hein and Roger Smith and together they pooled their resources. Skip’s military background made him a perfect liaison with the local military community and since Roger served on the board at the SBYC, that solidified the relationship between the event and the location. Together they decided that a fishing tournament would be much more entertaining and relaxing than just a big party. “I decided on a fishing tournament because I always found fishing to be a stress reliever for me,” said Garry. “When work was busy, and it always was, I went out fishing with my boys every chance I could. This tournament is our way of saying ‘thank you’ for the sacrifices U.S. military members make to protect our country.” This unique event is free for all participants - all captains, first mates and “pink ladies” (dedicated group of helpers) are volunteers. The entire event runs on the generous donations of the sponsors. This tournament is open to active serviceman and prior registration is required. go back to their grassroots beginnings and advocate through an art project created by the staff and individuals at their Westhampton Beach location. Although the project was originally just for the individuals that receive support from AHRC and their families, they thought why not extend it into the community and the state by asking ARCs throughout New York State to participate as well. What started off as a small mural containing 400 hundred squares ended with a large It Matters to Me mural that contained over 4,000 squares and is continuing to grow. Each person that

participated was asked to fill out a small square by telling AHRC what mattered to them; when these small squares were put together a beautiful work of art was created, showing how everything from work to food to fireman mattered!
