Six members of the Bayport-Blue Point High School Class of 2017 were recently honored as outstanding members of the school community and celebrated for their achievements at the annual “In Recognition of Excellence” event held on June 14th. The students — Abigail Auwaerter, Lena Diaz, Kayla O’Shea-Dorfman, Mackenzie Fabiani,

Madeline Silecchia and Joseph Venero — were selected by a committee of teachers and administrators at the high school from a list of nominees submitted by the entire faculty. The criteria for selection included service to the school and community, respect for fellow students, strong moral character, academic achievement, commitment and appreciation of school

ideals, participation in school activities and the ability to express himself/ herself. Additionally, the students were able to reciprocate their gratitude by selecting three staff members - one from their elementary, middle and secondary experiences who had a special influence on their education.

In recognition of their outstanding season with the 2016-2017 Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Competition Team 263, Suffolk County Legislators Thomas Muratore, William J. Lindsay III and Leslie Kennedy presented the team with a proclamation and certificates of recognition at the Legislature’s recent General Meeting in Riverhead. Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Competition Team 263, comprised of students from both Sachem High Schools East and North, recently

competed at the 2017 World Championships held in St. Louis, Missouri. From April 26th to April 29th Aftershock competed in the Carson Subdivision against 67 other teams. Sachem Aftershock earned its invitation to participate in the Championships after being Regional Winners at the SBPLI Long Island Regional. Held at Hofstra University from March 30th to April 1st, the event hosted a total of 55 teams from New York and Brazil. Team 263 was ranked first going into alliance selection and was captain

of alliance number one. Along with chosen alliance partners, they secured the win with a tiebreaking third round in the Finals In addition, one of the team’s mentors, Robert Wentzel won the prestigious Woodie Flowers Finalist Award at the event “I am amazed by the talent of these young men and women on Sachem Aftershock,” stated Legislator Muratore. “These bright minds will be leaders of tomorrow, serving as great role models in the fields of science and technology.”

of their visit, the fifthgraders were divided into small groups with the assistance of a sixth-grade chaperone who led them along their mock schedule into different classrooms. The current OBMS sixthgrade students offered helpful advice along the way, informing the younger students about

locker usage, school rules, and the multiple clubs and activities they’ll be able to look forward to come September. Additionally, OBMS teachers were on hand to further explain to the fifthgraders what to expect once they attend the middle school.

On Sunday, June 17th, Troop 336 of Holbrook, held an Eagle Scout Court of Honor for Christopher J. Mannino. Lodge Exalted Ruler Karen P. Costello and Past Exalted Ruler Douglas M. MacVittie were in attendance and presented Christopher with a pocket size American Flag and Certificate of Recognition from the Patchogue Elks Lodge along with a Congratulatory Letter, Certificate of Merit and an Eagle Feather Pin from Michael F. Zellen the Elks National President. Christopher’s Eagle Project entailed building a bench with planters and upgrading a small garden in the children’s playground at the Hiawatha Elementary School, Lake Ronkonkoma, where he once attended. He was able to leave a message on the bench in memory of his Aunt Liz who lost her battle with breast cancer.

The purpose of the Student Annual is to validate outstanding student work inspired by a class or student visit to LongHouse during the 2016-2017 academic year. The curated show was held in the LongHouse gardens in East Hampton. Over 500 submissions were received from students from across Long Island for the Student Annual. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Eighth Grade Musicians Honored

Furthermore, he served under Presiding Officer Lindsay and Presiding Officer Horsley, and currently serves as a Legislative Aide to Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “Chris has been a friend and mentor to me for so many years” said Legis. Lindsay. “He has managed to guide this County and its residents for decades and for that and all he continues to do; we all truly owe him our sincere gratitude.”

The Sayville Historical Society and all 18 Suffolk County Legislators honored Chris Bodkin for his life-long service to the residents of Suffolk County this past weekend. Chris Bodkin has dedicated his career to helping the community and many local organizations and is being recognized for his quick nature to assist in constituent services and for guiding the County in community based issues. One such issue that Chris dedicated himself to was

Global Giving In a novel undertaking by Woodhull Elementary School students and staff alike, the Fire Island school has made a donation of books, supplies and clothing to a fellow elementary school far across the globe in northwestern Guyana. The project was initiated based on a conversation between Woodhull bus driver Titus Francis and Woodhull teacher Shannon Rickard – a conversation that focused on how the schools in Mr. Francis’ native country of Guyana were in need of supplies. From there, Ms. Rickard began thinking of

ways to help and how this cause could be a learning experience for students, especially as it connected to the “Sharing the Planet” unit underway. With the support of the entire school, Mr. Francis connected the teachers with the aid organization Guyana Aid Region One, which specializes in aid to the northwestern part of the country; a region where Mr. Francis lived until the 1990s. Once the connection was made, Woodhull students collectively drafted a letter to the Region One organization formally indicating their desire

to donate and asking the organization if they would ship the donated materials to Guyana. The students then gathered nearly 100 children’s books, more than 100 school supplies and more than 100 articles of clothing for boys and girls, which they delivered to the GARO office in Rosedale, Queens. Per the teachers’ arrangement with GARO, these donations will go directly to the Hosororo Hill Primary School in Hosororo, Guyana, where Mr. Francis was once a student.

Time Traveling

Students, teachers and family members of Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently attended the school’s 2017 musical performance, titled The Jukebox Time Machine, produced and choreographed by Idle Hour music teacher Kelly Daugherty.

During the performance, the fifth-grade students transported audiences through different decades as they performed a hit song from a different era, including songs from the 1920s right up to the present. Songs featured during the show included such hits as “Dancing Queen,” “She Loves You” and “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

ANNUAL CONCERT - The Holbrook Chamber of Commerce and Legislator Lindsay hosted a free concert featuring musical performances from BonJourney and The Steel Silk Band this past Saturday. The concert took place at the Holbrook Country Club and despite a stormy forecast; nearly 200 residents came out for an incredible performance.

CONNECTING THROUGH WRITING - As an opportunity for students to have some fun, and possibly make lifetime friends along the way, third-grade students from Christine Brennen-Chanowsky’s class at Cherokee Street Elementary School traveled across town to visit with their “Pen Pals” in Karen Phillips’ class at Helen B. The 2017 Spellman High Voltage Electronics Clean Tech Competition will be held at Stony Brook University, 100 Nicolls Road, Stony Brook at the Center for Leadership and Development & Service

(LDS building) on Friday, July 14th. The theme of this year’s Competition is “Creating a Greener Future” and students will compete for over $20,000 in prize money. The final round of the

Competition will take place between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Students from 10 will have 15 minutes to explain the problem they identified, present their solution for mitigating the problem’s negative impacts. Winners

Maintaining the Native Ecosystem

Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently began assisting the environment by planting a multitude of plants in the school’s new community garden – a project spearheaded by second-grade teacher Sandra Fantauzzi and the Long Island Native Plant Initiative. Thanks to plant donations from the Cherokee Street Elementary PTA, the students studied plant life

in the classroom and then applied that knowledge when planting the native botanical species such as bayberry, slender goldentop and narrowleaf mountain mint. Each class throughout the school was given the chance to plant and maintain a designated plant species in an effort to spread and strengthen the environment and correlate with next generation scientific standards. According to their website, the mission of the Long Island Native Plant

Initiative is to protect the genetic integrity and heritage of Long Island native plant populations and thus biodiversity from a landscape to genetic level, by establishing commercial sources of genetically appropriate local (ecotypic) plant materials for use in nursery, landscaping and habitat restoration activities.
