Green & White & Golden Memories As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. As my guidance counselor passed by, she glanced my way. “Do you need a piece of gum Jamie? You look a little green.” And green I was, as I stood on the stage a few moments later, listening to our principal introduce me as the student

whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start

a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

Along with good mental health, MHAW recognizes the importance of physical health. Classes include an array of indoor and outdoor physical activities, as well as the chemical free garden right near their Ronkonkoma facility. In the garden, people learn how to grow their own food while connecting to the natural environment. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are donated to Charlotte’s Table food pantry, open each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which serves the broader community. Anyone interested in

MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Hosted by Founding Sons Law Enforcement/Military Motorcycle Club and Impressive and Aggressive Motor Club, attendees will visit up close with event registrants and their beautiful motorcycles, custom and classic cars. The day includes live entertainment by Muddy Johnson, while Johnny Numonic spins the tunes and attendees enjoy an array of food options, unique vendors and fabulous raffle prizes. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walkins, it is $5; and for children under 12, it is free. The Showcase of Talent, held June 4th at The Noel S. Ruiz Theatre at the CM Performing Arts Center in Oakdale, was a fundraiser for Autism Speaks featuring Eastern Suffolk BOCES students. The event raised $1,600. The idea for this event was conceived at the beginning of the school year. Students were invited to perform original compositions, dance routines, or cover songs of their favorite artists. One student chose to do a ventriloquist act. Many of these students had never been in a theatre to see a live theatrical performance and here they were on a stage. Twenty-year veteran of the stage, Luke Mahoney, believes that being on stage and being part of theatre can really build a person’s self-esteem. “This was a great opportunity for our students to perform in a professional theatre and see – firsthand – the workings of a theatre. They will see it is the best feeling in the world to get up, perform, and hear applause from the audience. It’s the sound of success,” he said.

Mr. Mahoney is the Barbering / Cosmetology Teacher at the ESBOCES Islip Academic Center. Student performers are part of the ESBOCES Special Education Secondary School Programs, which offer programs and services that assist students to achieve success and empower them so they can reach their full potential. T e a c h e r s , administrators, and support staff from ESBOCES volunteered their time to do makeup, hair, and videotape the show. Several employees who are musicians offered to play guitars and piano so the students would have a chance to see what it is like to be a part of an ensemble. ESBOCES Board Member Catherine Romano said, “This was by far – the best event of the year!” All proceeds from the show and the silent auction benefitted Autism Speaks − an organization that ESBOCES has supported for over 15 years.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Connetquot High School sophomores Biproprosad Das, Atif Khan and Keith Grant recently competed against more than 600 students from 34 states and countries in the SeaPerch Challenge held at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. According to their website, SeaPerch is an innovative underwater robotics program that equips teachers and students with the

resources they need to build an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle in an in-school or out-of-school setting. It provides students with the opportunity to learn about robotics, engineering, science and mathematics. The students received individual awards for their efforts and Connetquot High School Science Research teacher John Halloran received the Challenge Winner Award

for the team. The International SeaPerch Challenge is only open to teams that have earned a space to advance by winning at a properly registered Qualifying Competition. This innovative Connetquot High School team completed the first challenge in seven minutes, 13 seconds and the second part in three minutes.

Congressman Peter King recently visited Connetquot High School and talked to the students in attendance from Christine Lennihan’s and William VanNostrand’s social studies classes about how the United States government serves its citizens. After his insightful speech, the U.S.

representative answered the questions the students had for him and added anecdotes about the current administration and efforts to keep Americans safe. Additionally, he told stories about his experiences and travels, and added a few facts about his relationships with notable individuals, including several presidents.

Sachem High School North senior Paige Menneci from the Sachem Central School District has been selected as a 2018 National Merit Scholarship winner in recognition of her outstanding academic achievements and dedication to excellence in education.

Paige was selected among approximately 7,500 other students to receive the National Merit Scholarship out of the nearly 1.5 million entrants from across the United States. Among her academic accolades, Paige has been an Advanced Placement

student since ninth grade and also serves as the copresident of the Drama Club, vice president of the Music Honor Society and secretary of the National Honor Society. “Paige is an amazing young lady,” High School North Principal Patricia Trombetta said. “She excels in everything she does. A crafty combination of durability and ingenuity steered students to success during a recent activity at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District focused on the westward expansion of the United States. As part of the lesson that explained the historic 1803 expansion that followed the Louisiana Purchase, each fifth-grade class was challenged

to design a miniature covered wagon that could traverse. Student groups were supplied with bottle caps, cardboard, straws and tinfoil to assemble a prairie schooner capable of protecting cargo simulated by blocks. The covered wagons were led over a canyon, mountains, plains and a river, all while being sprayed by water to represent rain. Following the initial tests, students

revised their designs and attempted to cross the treacherous terrain again. Through the covered wagon activity students learned a plethora of additional information, including the journey of Louis and Clark, the details of the Louisiana Purchase, the doctrine of manifest destiny and the countless challenges the pioneers faced.

Celebrating Flag Day Students, staff, parents and local first responders recently gathered outside Edith L. Slocum Elementary School to celebrate Flag Day on June 14th. Those in attendance dressed in red, white and blue outfits, recited the Pledge of Allegiance, and sang patriotic songs around the school’s flag pole, including performances by the school band.

After the flag-raising ceremony, the guests visited the classrooms to talk to students about their dedication to the community they serve. Physical education teacher John Zambriski helped organize the event in the hope that it would provide students with the opportunity to recognize the honorable service these professionals provide and

Classroom Concepts Throughout the activity, John Ruggero guided students through a precise folding sequence that created a threedimensional box out of six square sheets of paper. Along the way, he incorporated geometric terminology to identify each fold. The terms included edges, faces,

vertices and different shapes such as isosceles triangles, right triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids. The collaborative activity allowed students to couple math curriculum concepts with the interesting art of origami.

Students at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently took part in the school’s second annual “Ramp Shot” fundraiser in an effort to raise money to support finding a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. After contributing a

$15 donation, students and their teammates were able to engage in fun and friendly competition in the school’s gymnasium for a few hours. Dozens of students put their skills to the test as they played the popular backyard game, which was created by Josh Bonventre and Kevin Texeira, both of Long

Island. As a result of the fundraiser, the students raised $1,300 to support the cause. Additionally, the Ronkonkoma Middle School National Junior Honor Society hosted a highly successful car wash the week prior which raised $500 toward funding and awareness for ALS.

A complex collaboration of art and math recently challenged fifth-graders in Susan Kinsey’s art class at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as a special guest – the school’s principal – led an origami activity that reinforced multiple math vocabulary terms.

C-Quest Showcase In celebration of all of the wonderful initiatives they took part in this school year, students enrolled in the Connetquot Central School District’s C-Quest program recently invited their family members to Edward J. Bosti Elementary School for the school’s annual C-Quest Showcase event. With assistance from advisers Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, the students were able to show their proud family members all

of the hard work they put into their projects while attending C-Quest. The students’ work was on full display for their guests, touching upon subjects such as exotic animals, argumentative topics such as whether or not college athletes should be paid or not, and whether or not school uniforms should be deemed necessary. Additionally, the students were able to engage in a real-time virtual planetarium, as they

eagerly showed their family members the planets in the solar system and outlined constellations. The district’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth- and fifth-grade students. Based at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, C-Quest services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

Relay for Life Students, staff, administration and community members of the Connetquot Central School District recently gathered at the Connetquot High School track on June 8th to celebrate the district’s second annual Relay For Life event. Due to the district’s fundraising efforts, more than $35,000 was raised for the American Cancer Society to provide research and services for those undergoing cancer

treatment. Through moving c e r e m o n i e s , musical entertainment, a survivor/caregiver walk, lawn games and delicious food, Relay For Life honored survivors and caregivers while offering a space for those affected by cancer to come together as a community. “We could not have asked for a more beautiful day for Connetquot’s second annual Relay

For Life event,” said Connetquot High School psychologist and Relay for Life coordinator Courtney Huguenin. “The success of this event was made possible through months of collaborative efforts of community volunteers, the administration of the Connetquot Central School District, the Connetquot Civic Club, and the American Cancer Society.”

Inspiration Walk

The Sayville students eagerly boarded the buses. Some were going to Lincoln Avenue elementary school, others to Sunrise Drive. A third group of walkers enjoyed the pleasant spring morning on their way to Cherry Avenue. However, what made this activity so newsworthy was that these students were the Sayville High School Seniors. The Class of 2018, dressed in their caps

and gowns and wearing laminated copies of their fifth-grade yearbook photos on lanyards, took this first-time nostalgic trip to their elementary schools. Once they arrived, the High School Seniors marched into the elementary school buildings to the music of Pomp and Circumstance. Inside, their former teachers, all the current

students, and many of the staff greeted them with heartfelt cheers and applause. This new tradition, entitled “The Senior Inspiration Walk” - to thank, reflect, reminisce, and inspire - at Sayville High School - has begun with the Class of 2018 and it was a great success. Mr. Hoffer noted with extreme satisfaction, “Dreams do come true.”

Christmas in June

The Patchogue Lions Club held its eighteenth annual “Christmas in June” event on Thursday, June 21st at Boomer’s Family Fun Center in Medford. For the thirteenth consecutive year, as part of its ongoing community service, Gershow Recycling sponsored the event by donating $1,500. Approximately 150 school children from seven elementary schools in the Patchogue-Medford School District were chosen to participate in this year’s

event by their respective principals. Since the Patchogue Lions Club has started “Christmas in June,” more than 1,900 children have participated in this fun-filled event. “This was a nice way to give these children an opportunity to have some fun and spend the day with their friends,” said Lou Giordano, President, Patchogue Lions Club. “It gave the children a place to enjoy themselves, especially with the school year drawing to a close.”

Children were treated to lunch and then given full access for several hours to attractions, including rides, go-carts, wall climbing, bumper boats, and arcade games. “We were very happy in joining with the Patchogue Lions Club to make this day possible for these children,” said Jonathan Abrams, Manager, Gershow Recycling. “They always have a great time here. With the summer season beginning, the timing couldn’t be better.”

Sheriff Visits Students of all grade levels at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District were recently paid a visit by Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr., along with Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department K-9 officers Kevin Tracy and Jason Korte, for an informative presentation along with a demonstration of the K-9 Unit. Sheriff Toulon introduced himself to the young students by describing his role as the Suffolk County sheriff,

along with the many duties and responsibilities that come along with his title. He informed the attendees that a sheriff is not appointed but is instead selected for the role by form of an election. Additionally, he hosted a question and answer session, in which the students were able to ask questions such as, “Where do all of the bad guys go?” and “How is your job different from a police officer’s?” After Sheriff Toulon’s informative session, Deputy Sheriff Tracy

took the floor as joined by Deputy Sheriff Korte, along with their two K-9’s Phillip and Jet. The officers let the students know that the dogs first and foremost role was to find specific materials and keep them safely off of the streets. The dogs are trained anywhere from two-tosix months depending on their age before they are officially able to conduct searches. The officers also demonstrated the dogs’ keen sense of smell through a hands-on activity.

Program Receives Grant

The Beth C. Tortolani Foundation Helps Provide Counseling and Support for Low-Income Breast Cancer Patients The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from the Beth C. Tortolani Foundation which allows the program to provide free social work services to ensure that underserved women are able to overcome barriers to care. These services include bilingual counseling and

patient navigation for breast cancer patients treated at local hospitals and provide referrals to community agencies that provide assistance such as food, transportation and legal services. The grant also helps to facilitate a Spanish-language support group, called Cafecito, held twice a month in Westbury. “Our licensed social workers offer free bilingual counseling to breast cancer patients treated at Nassau University Medical

Center (NUMC) as well as those referred from other local hospitals,” says Reyna Machado, assistant director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. In addition to the hotline - 800.877.8077 - the Adelphi Program offers a live chat with a licensed social worker, support groups in English and Spanish and referrals to free or low-cost mammography screening.

New York State Scholars

New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Order Sons of Italy in America (OSIA) Foundation President Robert Ferrito has announced that at the Foundation Annual Scholarship Awards presentation, held at Tappan Zee High School in Orangeburg, New York on June 9th, seventy one students from across New York State were awarded scholarships. Fifty-three of the seventy-one award recipients were on hand along with parents and guests, to receive their

scholarships in person. Every student received a minimum of $1,200 and will be a ‘studentat large’ member for the four years they are at school. Student At-Large members do not belong to a local lodge; they belong to the NY Grand Lodge and receive all materials relative to OSIA. The total amount awarded this year was $88,700 to deserving young adults. Many of the generous scholarship donors and State Officers were also on hand for the special event.

Following breakfast, students marched into the Tappan Zee High School auditorium. Mrs. Josephine Federico, District 7 Scholarship Chair, who hails from Syracuse, accompanied the students on piano as attendees sang the Italian and American National anthems. Biagio Isgro, a Foundation Director gave the invocation. Dr. Lois Mignone presented the Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Award to Dr. Madeline M. Crocitto, a Professor of Management in the

School of Business at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury. The Grand Lodge established the Cornaro Award in 1978 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the first doctorate awarded to Dr. Elena Lucrezia Cornaro. This award recognizes outstanding Italian American women in higher education who have made significant contributions to their profession and their community. Dr. Crocitto addressed the students explaining that they should not be afraid to take chances and to use this opportunity to explore as much as possible. Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee, presented the seven State Awards; Florence Gatto, Chairperson of the Graduate Awards, presented the three Graduate Awards while District Chairpersons distributed all other awards. The Chairpersons were Joanne Spera, District 1; Angelo Grande, District 2; Rosemarie Baffo Stathes, District 3; Margaret Forte, District 4; Sybil DeSimone, District 5; Cesare Maniccia, District 6; Josephine Federico, District 7; Scholarship Co-Chair Donna Torrisi, presented the scholarships for District 8; and Susan Alicea presented the Grants to the three recipients. The New York Grand Lodge Foundation, Inc. was formed on October 14, 1982. The corporation was formed to raise money and donate to various charities: to initiate scholarships for deserving students and to create and donate to educational programs that

will foster an awareness of Italian heritage and culture.
