The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties by dealing with it’s underlying causes, rather than merely treating symptoms. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come! This organization provides a portfolio of programming delivered by professionals, so that a set of services is customized in a unique way for each Veteran and family they serve. This way they can solve all of the underlying causes of their situation at the same time. They truly believe that this is how you break the cycle of homelessness! Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. This week I would like to share yet another success story. Please note: The name of the individual mentioned in this story has been changed for confidentiality purposes. A Long Island resident, Tina, found New Ground when she was facing eviction from her apartment and had nowhere to go with her two young sons. She had fallen behind on rent because of a significant decrease in her paycheck and she did not have the means to pay off this debt or to afford a new apartment. She moved into the Long Term Housing Program with New Ground, where she paid an affordable rent based on her income and began to receive all the intensive social work and education services necessary to help her turn things around. While in the program, Tina paid off significant debts on her credit report, increased her score by over 200 points, created a savings and secured better paying stable employment. However, her real focus was education. She agreed with New Ground that the way out of her cycle of poverty was a higher degree to ensure greater
income. Tina juggled work, school and raising two boys along with many other life responsibilities during her years with New Ground. She attended an Associate Degree program part time and finished in three years. She then immediately started a Bachelor Degree program, which she completed in three years. Following each accomplishment, she secured better paying employment and used her extra earnings to reach her financial goals. Upon completing the New Ground program and moving into a market rent apartment, she continued her education plan. This May she graduated with her Master Degree in Social Work and this summer she will become a homeowner! Tina stated, “I feel awesome, I feel accomplished. It has been a long journey. I’m just happy and overwhelmed. I love working with people and there is a big need for people to care for other people now. It’s what New Ground did for me, helping me to get where I am. Now it’s my turn to help someone else.” As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available. You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. The Book Fairies Encourage Volunteerism

They shared information about different musical instruments with 3rd grade students so that the students can make their instrument selections for 4th grade.

Options employees spent the day sorting books for an upcoming free book fair and packing books to be distributed to high poverty schools and community organizations. “Many of our employees have fond memories of reading as children and still feel connected to the books they read in their youth,” said Robano-Gross. “Having the opportunity to volunteer with an organization that fosters a love of reading in children across Long Island is very special. We are happy to help.”
During the May 22 South Country Central School District Board of Education meeting, Kreamer Street Elementary School students and members of the school’s STEAM Lab
Commission reported the success of the new STEAM lab. The science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics lab was a pilot program for the 2018-2019 school year and
students visit each week for hands-on exploration, problem-solving and building activities that are in tandem with the district’s grade-level curriculum.

RALLIED TOGETHER FOR FUNDRAISER - The Connetquot Central School District community recently rallied together in an effort to benefit both the Friscia and Battista families, who were unfortunately hit with tragedy this school year. Hosted at Bella Bambina’s Pizzeria in Oakdale, dozens of community members attended the event, as they were able to take part in a Chinese Auction and raffle with proceeds being directly donated toward the families. In an effort to get a jump start on utilizing technology to communicate, third grade students enrolled in Stephanie Zelinski’s class at Idle Hour Elementary School recently communicated with their pen pals from Valerie O’Connell’s and Susan Meade’s class at Cherokee
Street Elementary School in a video conference call via Google Meet. Although they have never met one another prior to engaging in the video chat, the students enthusiastically greeted one another and introduced themselves to their pen pals with assistance from their teachers.
During their time spent communicating, they were able to ask questions about their pen pal’s school building, classroom set ups and current classroom projects. Additionally, they discussed similarities and differences about each other’s communities.

Anticipation hung in the air at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as teams of fifth grade student-artists raced the clock during the inaugural Art Chopped Competition, which mimicked the popular Food Network Television show “Chopped.” During three rounds, students were provided with a box filled with various supplies and a list of specifications their artistic creation had to follow for that round. During each timed round, students worked
expeditiously to create a work of art that met all of the specifications while using all of the materials provided. At the completion of each round, teams presented their work to a panel of three judges who judged the work based on creativity, collaboration and the use of materials. After each round, teams were eliminated based on the judges’ decisions until a winner was selected. Concluding a competitive final round, Team Powerful Painters was selected as the winner of the competition.

The bricks were represented by old cereal boxes that now showcased information about the books the students read. As the theatrical assembly continued, building administrators and staff
acted out the enchanting fairy tale dressed in vibrant costumes. At the conclusion of the production, students discovered the dragon was not scary at all; he just wanted to visit Wenonah to read all of its wonderful books. The engaging performance shared the popular sentiment that you should never judge a book by its cover.

The cemetery was created in 1879 when a small group of community members held a meeting at the Ketcham Hotel. The Mount Pleasant Cemetery Association was established, with Mr. John Scudder Haven elected as the first president of the board of trustees. In the weeks that followed a parcel of land (8 acres) owned by Mr. J.S. Kaler was purchased. Then two years later, in 1881 Mount Pleasant Cemetery acquired the adjacent Presbyterian Cemetery. Through the years, Mount Pleasant was able to acquire other neighboring properties that makeup the beautiful, 37 acre park like setting of today. Mount Pleasant Cemetery has grown in size and has undergone a thorough restoration and modernization. The landscape is in continual upkeep to create the seasons of beauty. The record keeping and office procedures have all been computerized. A beautiful chapel, a new workshop and large storage area have been added. Recently, several beautiful granite columbarium have been erected that contain glass niches inside and granite niches outside to hold your love one’s urn. New equipment and tools have been purchased for the maintenance and security of the grounds and upkeep of the crematory. The crematory has a unique, patented, cremation tool called, ‘Clean Sweep’ that uses air for sweeping in the cremation process.
This tool enables the staff to take extra care in collecting the cremated remains of your loved one. This tool and the process was invented by the staff at Mount Pleasant Cemetery and it is now being used across the country by other crematoriums. Mount Pleasant Cemetery has an outreach relationship with the community. The staff and equipment has been used to help other neighboring cemeteries. The Wading River Cemetery needed help uprighting over 40 headstones and over 50 headstones in the Brookfield Cemetery in Manorville. During the community project on Arbor Day the cemetery staff helped to plant over 100 trees along Montauk Highway. In a more recent event, cemetery staff helped in the recovery effort of TWA flight 800. The cemetery’s geographic location lent itself to the installation of a beautiful memorial for TWA Flight 800, two of the passengers from the flight are buried at the cemetery. The other memorials located in this cemetery are dedicated to The VFW Victory Post 414 and the Center Moriches Fire Department. Whether through financial donations or hands on support the cemetery staff is also involved with the Chamber of Commerce, The Ketchum Inn, The Moriches Historical Society, the Rotary, and Independent Group Home Living. The cemetery also supports other organizations like New Beginnings Community Care in Medford where patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries are cared for and helped. The Boy Scout Troop 414 and the VFW Victory Post 414 pay tribute to the Veterans every year by the placing of American flags on graves for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. At Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the involvement with the Boy Scouts, paved the way for a young man to make Eagle Scout by installing a brick patio and bench at the Veterans Memorial. Every year the Center Moriches Memorial Day parade travels down Main Street and the parade ends in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery for a ceremony sponsored by the VFW Victory Post 414. An old cemetery, like Mt. Pleasant, is the final resting place for those who settled our area fought for our freedom and those who continued the work that has made the wonderful
community we know today. The cemetery provides opportunities to discover local history. Cemeteries document a person’s existence with birth and death dates. With the digitalization of documents becoming available today, a more detailed history of a person’s life can be found. A perfect example is the “Find A Grave” website which identifies some of the graves at Mount Pleasant with the names, dates and gravestone pictures. One of the stories that have been discovered using information, including the digitalization of his military pension, is about Henry Ross (Rouse) (1758-1847) who enlisted as a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War. Drummers were used to communicate signals to the army. Henry served in the Massachusetts Militia stationed in Vermont and was shot in the leg during the Battle of Bennington. He was released from duty in 1783, at the end of the war. Henry has about six generations of his family buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Henry Ross’ military file shows that many relatives have applied to be a Son or Daughter of the Revolution through him. The story about the young drummer boy is only one of the hundreds of stories about the people who have been laid to rest at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. This community cemetery has been the choice for a final resting place for its beauty, the services that are available and most of all because the cemetery staff are so helpful and compassionate. The concept of pre-planning and making the process unique to the individual has families creating new modern customs. There are many details and options in planning a funeral service. A REAL-LIFE LITERARY CONNECTION - Fourth and fifth grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently engaged in a Skype session with the author of the “I Survived” series, Lauren Tarshis. Students from both Karen Pitka’s and Stephanie Russo’s classes enthusiastically led a question and answer session with the author after several students wrote letters to her, citing her as their favorite author. The “I Survived” series tells tales of fiction from the viewpoint of children who witnessed historical events such as the destruction of Pompeii, the American Revolution and Hurricane Katrina. Dozens of PSEG Long Island employees, including Kenneth Kolodnicki of Sayville, recently participated in the Marie Kondo Challenge to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Led by the company’s volunteer group, ASPIRE— Asians & Pacific Islanders Reaching for Excellence, employees were challenged to clean out unneeded and unwanted items and clothing from their homes. The Lunar New Year spring cleaning is a tradition in some Asian cultures that symbolizes a fresh start to a prosperous new year. As a result of the challenge, two vanloads of clothing were donated
to LI Coalition for the Homeless. “This was a wonderful way to embrace the diversity of our employees, while supporting the community we serve,” said PSEG Long Island’s ASPIRE president Linda Zhang. “Not only did our participants have fun doing their spring cleaning, but we were able to help those in our community meet some basic needs. All in all, it was a wonderful event that helped many people.” Marie Kondo is a Japanese author and consultant who is known globally for her unique “tidying up method” and “spark joy” concept.

Fashion Forward Students assistance from Ms. Munz, the fashion marketing students took a trip to The Fashion Foundation’s warehouse located in Farmingdale to gain some firsthand tips about the fashion world and how to become a successful entrepreneur. With these refined skills on hand, the students were able to apply their knowledge toward creating a stunning store which they advertised together as a team. By the end of the day, it was reported that a whopping $865 worth of merchandise was sold. Proceeds will go to the less fortunate students in the
New York City area. Due to the efforts of The Fashion Foundation, more than 6,000 students have been provided with new school supplies and equipment toward brightening their school days. Ms. Munz created The Fashion Foundation approximately five years ago after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, located in the heart of Manhattan. Since then, it has been her life’s work to sell donated items of clothing and use the profit to benefit underprivileged schools TAKES CHALLENGE TO THE NEXT LEVEL - PSEG Long Island volunteer and their student bodies. Kenneth Kolodnicki of Sayville helped to sort 20 bags of clothing donated by him and fellow PSEG Long Island employees to the LI Coalition for the Homeless. The donation was a result of company-wide participation in the Marie Kondo Challenge honoring the traditional Lunar New Year spring cleaning.

Students Thank Local Business Personal Training students at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology came together with Carpentry students to thank Mr. D’s Ultimate Fitness in Patchogue for their commitment to education. Two students, Elishia Proctor and Matt Martin of William Floyd UFSD, recently completed their spring internship at Mr. D’s Ultimate Fitness. The
Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Elishia and Matt came together with students from Mr. Postigilione’s Carpentry class to build a plyo box for the gym. Plyo boxes are used in workouts for jumping exercises. The box was decorated with and a vinyl wrap designed
by Mr. Placella’s Graphics class that showed the logo of the gym. Students learned to collaborate to achieve a common goal. Internships with local businesses are important for students to be career ready when they graduate. This internship will help students be prepared to work in a gym, or assist private personal training clients in the future.

Student Pilots Honored Students from the Aviation Program at Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) are used to reaching new heights. In a recent pinning ceremony, the students were honored for completing either their first solo flight, or getting their private pilot certificate by the end of the year. Aviation and Private Pilot Training is one of several programs offered by the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology. The Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Bellport, Oakdale, and Riverhead. Students entering the
Aviation and Private Pilot Training Program are put through a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare them to be able to go on a solo flight or graduate with their private pilot’s license. The Academy has a relationship with Mid Island Air Service, located in Brookhaven, New York, where students are able to fly. Twelve students were honored for completing their first solo flight, and another two received their private pilot certificate. Students were pinned with a set of flight wings. The wings, which is a pin worn on the left breast, indicate that the recipient
has completed flight training. Two students were also honored with scholarships during the event. Julia Bonafede of Rocky Point High School, and Derek Coppola of Westhampton Beach High School received the Louis Mancuso, Sr. Aviation Scholarship—a $1000 scholarship from Mid Island Air Service that is awarded to Long Island high school seniors with a love of aviation. Coppola also received a $1000 Alumni grant for furthering his education at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
