A health expo was also available during the event and was open to all participants. The event raised over $80,000. The Healing Heart 5K
hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. On Monday, July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its third annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club on 483 West Main St., in Huntington. The price is $2,000 for a foursome. That includes brunch, a round of golf, cocktail hour and dinner. For dinner only (no golf), the cost is $175 per person. All proceeds from the event will go towards ADRC and The Mickey & Felice Neuwirth Care Center. The event is named after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chairs the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Last year, the event successfully raised over $127,000 towards Alzheimer’s research and treatment. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by a brunch at 10 a.m. At noon,
there will be a barbeque lunch and shotgun start. The cocktail reception will start at 5 p.m., followed by a dinner, a program, trophies and raffles. Golfers will also have the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center - which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton - is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the
New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products. The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk, sponsored by East End Cardiology was held on Sunday, May 20th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. For the ninth year in a row, Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo is hosting its Camp Zoo, consisting of three one-week sessions for children ages 4-12. Sessions run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This season’s sessions are as follows: July 15th-19th: Wild World of Animals (ages 4-9) — It’s not always being green, spotted, striped or camouflaged. Children will learn about the many wonderful friends the Game Farm staff care for, as well as weird and quirky tidbits about each of them. They will also learn about the natural habitats, find out their special likes and dislikes, and create special keepsakes and memories that will last all summer long! July 22nd-26th: All “Kinds of Krazy” Animals (ages 7-12) — Herbivores. Carnivores. Omnivores. Children will learn about

Camp Zoo Registration what the animals at the Game Farm and in the wild enjoy. They will also create special treats and toys for some of the Game Farm’s newest additions and longtime residents, as well as some special keepsakes to bring home. July 29th-August 2nd: Camp Zoo Carnival (ages 4-12) — Children will take part in fun and games inspired by a carnival theme as they join the Game Farm staff in bidding farewell to the summer until next year. They will also create special projects and learn about the Game Farm’s favorite four-legged friends while enjoying some popcorn and other treats, for an animal sendoff, Game Farm-style! At the end of the week, all campers will receive a Camp Zoo T-shirt and a personalized CD containing photographs of their experiences at Camp Zoo. For the first time, this year, the Game Farm will host a Mini-Camp Zoo for children ages 3-5. This is ideal for campers who may not be ready for a full-day experience but love animals and making friends their own age. They will have the opportunity to explore the Game Farm and meet the interesting and friendly animals, make a project, share a smile, cuddle or pet the animals and learn about the many creatures here in Manorville. Oneday sessions are on June 27th and July 10th. A oneweek session runs from August 12th to August 16th. Sessions run each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. “We can’t wait to get started with our ninth year of Camp Zoo and our first-ever Mini Camp Zoo. This program is as exciting for us as it will be for the young campers. The camp is the ultimate animal experience where children will learn in-depth about different animals and wildlife issues. Our mission has always been
to offer high-quality fun and education to families across Long Island and Camp Zoo takes that concept one step farther by really getting the kids involved,” said Melinda Novak, Co-Owner of the Long Island Game Farm. “This looks to be our most fun year yet!” Registration for Camp Zoo is $425 per week for new campers and $375 per week for returning campers. Those between the ages of 12 and 14 and who have attended at least one week of Camp Zoo may become a Junior Camp Zoo Counselor. Registration is $275 per week for all Junior Camp Counselors, who will earn certification upon completion of the session. A deposit of $100 per child per week is required to ensure a child’s reservation. All balances are due by June 15th. Any camper who registers after that date is expected to pay the amount in full. Up to 25 campers are accepted for each session. Registration is on a first-come, firstserved basis. Mini Camp Zoo registration for each camper is $55 per day or $95 for both days. a row, Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck will be hosting its One Million Dollar Duck Race on July 13th on 2 Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches. The event is to help raise money to benefit the camp’s special-needs children. The Million Dollar Duck Race starts at 5 p.m. Each duck costs $10. The $1 million prize will be awarded to the first- and tenth-place ducks if they are one of the pre-selected ducks. Seven thousand small ducks will be available for sale. General admission is $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Children’s admission includes a hot dog and soda. General admission will also include hayrides, bouncy rides, raffles and music. The Million Dollar Duck Race follows the Annual Kaler’s Pond Duck Race, which starts at 4 p.m. Each duck is available for $100, with 250 ducks for sale. There will be a $10,000 prize for first place, $1,000 for second place and $500 for third place, if all 250 ducks are sold. In the
purchased, first prize will be split evenly between the winner and the camp. Both races are part of the camp’s 44th Annual Family Style Duck Bar-B-Que and Duck Race. Tickets are $30 for a duck dinner ($35 at the gate), $25 for a chicken dinner ($30 at the gate). Lobster dinners are available (for pre-sale only) for $40. Gates open at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online at www. campduckrace.com. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp designed for young people ages 6-21 with special needs. The Long Island International Film Expo (LIIFE) will hold its 16th annual installment at the historic Bellmore Movies from July 17th through 25th. Showing 146 films from around the world, LIIFE will showcase movies from 18 countries with 36 of the films having Long Island ties and 35 more hailing from New York in general. “Nassau County has always been a supporter of independent and studio films, and it’s our pleasure to bring this type of entertainment and cultural opportunity to our constituents,” states Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano. “LIIFE also provides an opportunity for filmmakers to come and see the types of filming locations Nassau County has to offer whether it be our beaches, mansions, suburban areas and,
of course, Gold Coast Studios and Grumman Studios, which are all NYS approved movie studios which qualify for the much sought after 30% tax credit.” “What makes LIIFE such an important film festival,” states Nassau County Film Office Director, Debra Markowitz, “is not only that we bring rare short and feature-length independent films to the public, but that LIIFE has fostered a growing film community. Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real
one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.
Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Even eight months after Super Storm Sandy tore through Long Island, storm ravaged communities, such as Long Beach, are still in need of assistance. Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, has continuously driven efforts to aid disaster relief in these areas. Thanks to a generous donation from the Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Island Harvest was able to hold a supermarket gift card distribution to aid people in Long Beach still struggling from the storms aftermath. Over 300 people lined up on the sidewalks of Long Beach at last Monday’s gift card distribution. Of those who attended, 250 received gift cards while the next 120 received a disaster recovery food box, which provided a four person family with four

The organizers and participants of that Swim petitioned to have the event renamed in her honor. Since 2000, the swim has taken on an entirely new meaning for the Bay Shore/ Brightwaters and Fire Island communities. The 2012 Swim had the largest field of participants to date. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office welcomed 36 new recruits to the rank of Correction Officer during a graduation ceremony held at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue on June 14th. As recent recruits of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Academy Bureau, the new officers successfully navigated the academy’s rigorous thirteen week training program for the right to take their place among the other distinguished members of the Suffolk County Correction Officers. During their academy instruction, all officer candidates are required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including, but not limited to, firearm safety and handling, defensive
tactics, emergency medical training and a rigorous program of physical fitness and testing. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco spoke at Friday’s ceremony and reinforced the importance of their work during his speech: “Not only do I believe you will be challenged in your new career in Corrections, but you will come to learn that the Suffolk County Correctional Facility is an innovative and progressive environment to work in.” He added, “As Correction Officers, you will find that much of what we do on the inside is geared toward preparing our inmates for successful re-entry into our communities. You have an important job ahead of you.”

We pray that they return healthy and proud of themselves. We gather ‘round on this day to celebrate our country. Fighting in battles. Having wounds from trying to protect yourself. But not only are you protecting yourself, you are a guardian to this country.

Interesting facts about lands far and near were on display during this year’s Travel Fair, organized by Nancy Celentano’s fourthgraders at Academy Street Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. As part of their world geography lessons, the students selected diverse regions from throughout the world to study. Employing their research and technology skills, they developed comprehensive presentations on their subjects. The fourth-graders used
conventional research tools, such as destination websites, encyclopedias and magazines, to collect basic information on their country or state. They also connected with outside organizations – their country’s department of tourism or the local agency Empress Travel, for example – to collect supplemental information. After organizing their research, the students created informational display boards and persuasive pamphlets, which included photos and captions of fun places to
visit, historic landmarks and famous cities, along with recommendations and descriptions for travel accommodations. On the day of the Travel Fair, fellow classes from Academy Street visited the students’ different stations to learn about a variety of places and sample student-prepared culinary dishes representing the regions’ agriculture and traditions. An array of flags and mobiles depicting the researched states and countries marked the entrance to the fair.
Don’t Text And Drive (NAPSI)—There are steps parents and others can take to drive down the dreadful rate of traffic injuries and fatalities. An estimated 6,000 people are killed and 500,000 people are injured annually because someone was texting, e-mailing or talking on a mobile phone while driving. The Facts Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist and LG Text Ed council member, explains that for teens, texting and driving is an even bigger problem than it is for adults. First, kids text more. Texting is their preferred mode of communication. According to a recent LG Text Ed survey conducted by LG Mobile phones, while half of all teens admit to texting while driving, only 4 percent of parents are aware of this. Second, teens are inherently novices when it comes to driving. They especially need to focus on the road to compensate for any lack of driving skill or experience. Third, teens can literally be driven to distraction.
If a teen is caught up in a dramatic or tense texting conversation, it could be too enticing to focus on the phone instead of the road. The Stats The U.S. government’s official website on distracted driving, www. distraction.gov, cites multiple statistics on the dangers of this careless behavior: • Using a mobile phone while driving, whether it’s handheld or hands-free, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having a blood alcohol concentration at the legal limit of .08 percent. • Driving while using a mobile phone reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by 37 percent. • Drivers who use handheld devices are four times as likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves as those who don’t. • An estimated 11 percent of drivers are talking on cell phones while driving at any point during the day. 1. Impress upon teens the need to not text or talk on the phone while driving by not doing so yourself. Beyond providing an example of responsible behavior, this creates a safer driving environment. 2. Explain to your teens the seriousness of the situation and let them know that it is important to have a plan in order to avoid temptation. For example, have them always keep their cell phone off while driving or in the backseat out of reach to avoid distraction completely. 3. As part of its Text Education campaign, LG offers insights and solutions on how to avoid possibly harmful behaviors such as distracted driving. In order to keep distractions to a minimum, LG encourages all drivers to never text while driving and to always use a handsfree Bluetooth device when operating a vehicle.

Perri was a member of her varsity swim & diving team and the varsity ski team. She is a competitive gymnast and also teaches gymnastics to 5 and 6 year olds during the week. In addition she is editor in chief of the school yearbook. Perri is the granddaughter of Marlene Goldstein, another long-time Connetquot teacher. Perri and Grant are outstanding individuals who truly merit the recognition given to them by the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association for 2013. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial concerns. On May 16th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held it’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 100 retired Connetquot School District educators joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to two worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District of Islip. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA Secretary Trudi Manley, “… over the years, thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of the scholarships has increased.” This year the CRTA Scholarship Committee provided $1,000 grants to Perri Goldstein and Grant Costa to be used for the upcoming school year. Retiring CRTA President Marilyn Aitken, along with newly elected president Peter Leis, congratulated this year’s scholarship winners, both of whom are outstanding high school seniors. Grant Costa will be attending Duke University in the Fall studying physics. He is a National Merit Commended student. He has developed two original math theorems related to Number Theory and Cryptology. He performed statistical analysis on original cardiac research data and was cited for his work in the Journal of Interventional Cardiology. He was awarded

Community Planning Contingent On May 23rd, the Islip Contingent of the South Shore Civic Alliance and local Chamber of Commerce Members assembled at the Sayville Library for a presentation by Dan Gulizio, Executive Director of the Huntington Based Community Planning Center. CPC espouses that development ought to reflect the needs of the community first, not special interests or individual developer expectations. CPC believes that partnerships between and among civic organizations, local chambers and school districts can help to minimize the influence of special interests and ensure that community needs and quality of life come first. Gulizio provided a significant amount of information supporting his contention that rapid increases in development and population density throughout Suffolk County have turned the region into a highly polluted and costly place to live which led him to ask “If we are already one of the mostly densely populated counties, why is there not enough development that ensures a wide variety of meaningful jobs and offers ample opportunity to afford the homes we actually have?” This meeting came two days after the Islip Town Board unanimously approved a resolution allowing for the continuation of the SEQR application for the SEROTA Project. The Suffolk County Planning Commission will now be reviewing Serota’s Final Environment Impact Statement and eventually will hold a planning commission meeting that will allow our group to express our views as it regards this project. The presentation then turned to the SEROTA Proposal. There is significant opposition among local chambers and civic groups to the retail component of this proposal. Pursuant to the Sunrise Highway Corridor Study (2009), there are already 19 existing retail centers along Sunrise Highway within the Town of Islip involving approximately 217 storefronts and 1,432,500 square feet of commercial
development. The Islip Pines/Serota Updated Proposal is for the 135 acre property located in the hamlet of Holbrook at the Northeast corner of Sunrise Highway and Veterans Memorial Highway just west of the Costco/ Savers Shopping Center. This updated proposal would consist of 339,000 sq ft of retail of various sizes which will include 2 Big Box stores as well as a 60,000 sq ft cinema with 16 screens. The industrial sub district would consist of 932,500 square feet. Included are one three story hotel and one story buildings with a mixed
use in that niche/boutique stores will inhabit the ground floor with business/office space utilizing the second floor. Lastly, the residential sub district would consist of the development of 350 housing units. It should be noted that this part of the project will now be comprised of 350 senior housing units which is a change from the previous plan. Based on the above information we are opposed to any further retail development along this 1.7 mile section of Sunrise Highway Our discussion continued by focusing on the potentially negative effect that additional retail would have on our Downtowns/Main Streets. Chamber members reported that vacancy rates are a major concern for the business

The chamber members present pointed out that if the retail component of the Serota Proposal is approved it would essentially create another downtown that could cause many struggling business owners to close their doors for good. This would further increase vacancy rates in our downtowns and potentially damage the residential communities that depend on our local business owners to enhance the quality of life in our communities. Furthermore, many of our residents are concerned about the further erosion of their property values if downtown vacancies increase. Next we moved to our concerns regarding the overabundance of traffic that already exists on this 1.7 section of roadway. This roadway is fed by Nicolls Road as well as the northbound Sunrise Highway Service Road. Furthermore, many drivers are immediately looking to cross two lanes of traffic to gain entry onto Rt. 27 westbound. At the same time many drivers are trying to cross two lanes in the opposite direction to gain access to the Costco/ Savers entrance on Beacon Drive as well as trying to enter the entrance ramp to Veterans Memorial Highway. It was our contention that any more retail development in this area would make an already dangerous overcrowded traffic situation worse. The South Shore Civic Alliance in conjunction with our Chamber of Commerce contingent would like to thank Dan Gulizio, Executive Director of the Community Planning Center for delivering a thoughtful and informative presentation to our civic and chamber alliance. We are hoping to develop a plan based on CPC strategies that will change the current dynamic of allowing special interests to usurp the rights of those that live in our residential

(NAPSI)—Cats can be loving, loyal, feisty or fierce—and if you saw the hit movie “Puss In Boots,” then you know one cat can embody all those traits and more. Adopting a cat can be a “purrfectly” wonderful idea as long as you understand the commitment that comes along with it. Before bringing a cat home, consider these tips from Madeline Bernstein, president of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles (spcaLA): • Evaluate your needs. Are you ready to make the commitment to a pet? Cats can live up to 18 years. On average, pet care costs about $400 a year.
• Visit a pet adoption center. Don’t shop when you can adopt. Shelters have many cats to choose from and adoption saves lives. • Questions? Ask the staff. The shelter staff can often tell you the animal’s personality traits, likes, dislikes, temperament, breed, and activity level. Keep your options open. A pet doesn’t have to be a kitten to be a loyal companion. • Patience. Be patient. You may need to visit the adoption centers a few times before you find the cat that’s right for you. • Decide as a family. Does the cat get along with everyone and how does everyone get along with
the cat? • You made a decision, now what? Here are some items you should have before bringing your new cat home: ID tag and breakaway collar, cat food, pet bowls (2), litter box (rule of thumb: one for each cat, plus one), litter and scooper, toys, treats, scratching post, cat carrier (for vet trips/ emergencies) and a plan for veterinary care. • We love our new cat, but we’re having some issues. The enjoyable craft taught the students the proper way to use basic tools.

Fourth grade students at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District recently hosted a Wax Museum exhibition by becoming “wax” figures themselves. The event was organized by fourth grade teachers Mrs. Klaus, Mrs. D’Andrea, Mrs. Mclnerney and Mrs.
With a weighted GPA of 107.286, Rebecca Monastero edged ahead of 292 students to be Sayville’s Class of 2013 Valedictorian. Although humble in the spotlight of publicity, Rebecca has often risen in the headlines for her significant scientific accomplishments as a Sayville R.I.S.E. student. Her research on the Interactions of Mercury and Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Avid Seafood Consumers, conducted this past summer as a Simons Fellow at Stony Brook University under the mentorship of Dr. Jaymie Meliker, earned her a spot as one of the 53 Long Island science students named from among the 300 national semifinalists in the Intel Science Talent Search this fall. It also won her a top 10 finalist position in the Neuroscience Research Prize by the American Academy of Neurology. For such an illustrious high school career, Rebecca was recently honored with the Outstanding Senior Science Student by the Suffolk County Science Teachers Association of New York State. Beyond her
extraordinary years of dedication on numerous and noteworthy scientific studies, beyond her stellar academic numbers and rank, however, is an amazing, well-rounded young lady who comprises diverse talents and who has captured the admiration of her peers, as well as the High School community. In addition to the rigorous five AP courses she has taken this year, Rebecca still pursues outside hours as a Youth Squad Member of the Sayville Community Ambulance Corp., and participates as treasurer for both the High School Student Government and the Anchor Club (for which she earned the Distinguished Service Award). She has trained and performed in ballet and lyrical dance recitals, and is a member of the Sayville Girls Varsity Golf team. A talented vocalist and violinist, Rebecca has competed in the SCMEA festival, NYSSMA and All-State, for which she has garnered NYSCAME Acceptance, NYSSMA and All-State honors. Not just a performer, however, Rebecca is an outstanding service member of Tri-M Music Honor Society High School String Ensemble for which she also earned the Tri-M Outstanding Service Award as a Junior for fulfilling over forty hours of service. “Her motivation and achievements have been exceptional, over the four years that I have worked with her,” acknowledged

Next fall, Rebecca will be attending Stony Brook’s Woman in Science & Engineering’s Direct Med Program on scholarships. This eight-year program interviews only thirtyfour candidates from a nationwide application process and selects only an elite eight students. This is where, Rebecca - one of the eight - will begin her amazing destiny.

Candito and Nicole Mary Anthony have been named Co-Salutatorians, each earning the second highest Grade Point Averages of the 2013 graduating class. “David has committed himself to his academics and to helping others,” said Connetquot High School Principal Gregory Murtha. “His achievements and involvements with extra-curricular clubs and organizations have made him a positive role model Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School announced the top graduating student for the 2012-2013 academic year. As June comes to a close, thousands of Long Island’s students will be flocking to the beaches instead of to the classrooms. The end of June customarily signifies the end of the school year. With the end of the school year comes herds of teens with nothing scheduled to do all day. These newly freed kids will go to the beach in search of a little relaxation to unwind from yet another stressful school year. As the last bell of the year tolls, many local high schoolers will beeline straight for Long Island’s coast. After my final test, the Chemistry Regents, my friends and
I hopped on the ferry to Ocean Beach and spent some time enjoying the sand, the sun and the surf. It was nice just to forget about studying, about stress, and about doing our homework. The realization that we had just begun our three month relaxation period had finally started to set in. While playing in the water with my closest friends, we felt happy to be done with school. The pressure put on children from school magically disappears as you leave the classroom for the last time for almost 100 days. On that final day, the only worry one feels is whether or not they have a ride to
the beach. Here on Long Island, the beach is a Mecca for teens. With no worries about school, we are free to enjoy our downtime and finally let loose. As my friends and I exemplified, the primary goal of June - September shouldn’t rest upon education; it should rest upon relaxation. The precious little time you have to unwind is important to students. Everyone needs some time to just “shut your brain off” and get into the “summer mindset.” The end of the school year is a time that enables teens to have fun, relax and hang out with friends.
