Five members of the Sachem Central School District community were honored for their dedication and commitment to education as part of the Scope Education Services annual awards. Jonathan Metzger, who has faithfully served the Sachem community for nearly 36 years in our groundskeeping department, received the award for support staff services. Jonathan is also a Sachem alumnus and still resides in the district, where he has raised his family. He is an active and loyal member of our community, where he is known for his care and compassion for others. Jonathan’s work ethic is second to none. He takes great pride in his work and wears his uniform with respect for our district. Jonathan is diligent in every assigned task and goes above and beyond by ensuring all is in good order for all student events and activities. He has truly demonstrated what it means to be the best and has provided outstanding service to the school district.

Neely and her entire staff are great partners to the Sachem Central School District. Under her leadership, with the support of the library board, the position of Community Engagement Coordinator was created. The coordinator now has a team, and they can be found in our schools all of the time. The library team visited the schools 171 times in 2019. They attend Back to School Nights, orientations, and STEAM visits with English, math and science classes. Additionally, they participate in district

District for 30 years. Pat is overseeing a buildingwide focus on reading, and her school participates in the annual Chippewa Mini-Marathon. Pat embodies a servant leadership style, as she approaches all of her work with great pride, care and sensitivity. We look forward to Pat’s continued work and feel great pride that she is an integral part of our leadership team. Katie Trentowski, a Sachem elementary teacher since 2001, has received the Teacher Service Award. She works tirelessly to meet the needs of her students and incorporates teaching strategies that support student growth and independence. Katie conducts small group instruction daily for every student in her room, has a “book of the day” read loud connected to District initiatives and offers flexible seating in her classroom. Katie emerged as both an example and resource to her colleagues during the adoption of a new math instructional model. Katie further contributes to Sachem through her service on various committees and serves as a building union representative. Katie is a selfless educator who

Obituary Catherine M. Blanchette, a resident of Medford, New York, died June 5, 2020 at Carillon Nursing Home, Huntington, New York. She was 90 years old. Mrs. Blanchett was born on November 1, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York to Francis Anthony and Lilliam M. (Dougherty) Bedell. Catherine was employed by the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in Hempstead, New York at the time of her retirement. She is survived by her son Peter. A service was held at Powell Funeral Home on Saturday, June 13, 2020 conducted by Deacon Pa LaBella. Private cremation followed on Monday, June 15th with future interment in Amityville Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from
the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired.
