n mid-May, members of Sayville’s Athlete’s Helping Others organization came in great numbers to support four of Sayville’s own - Ashley Daigle, Jacob Feldman, Kaitlyn Finley and Logan Hillery - who participated in the Special Olympic Spring Games at Southampton High School. Encouraged by the sea of blue AHO shirts that filled the stands, along with their rallying cheers, the four Special Olympians each medaled in their events.

Amityville. This book fair is run two times a year and the students look forward to starting their own libraries at home. It’s so exciting to see the joy in the students’ eyes when they realize all of the books are free and they will have books in their house. The high school books are designated for Roosevelt High School’s free library cart program that is offered once a month and the adult books will be used to stock the free library at the Freeport train station. All of the preschool books are headed to Winthrop University Hospital’s Reach Out and Read program where every child who visits the clinic receives a free book.” “We collected twentytwo boxes of books for donation - not bad!” Ms. Finnerty concluded with pride in the generosity of the Sayville High School community and looks forward to organizing another drive next year.

In response to the Sayville High School donations, The Book FairiesFounder/Executive Director Amy Zaslansky wrote a letter. “Thank you so much for donating a wonderful collection of books to The Book Fairies organization. The majority of the books are headed to the Hempstead School District. Currently, there is a lack of books in the classrooms, making it near impossible to fight the illiteracy epidemic in the area. Lending a hand in the fight against the illiteracy epidemic in the area, Nancy Finnerty, Sayville High School Teacher-Librarian, enlisted the assistance of Sayville High School faculty and students in donating to a book drive she organized for a wonderful organization, The Book Fairies. The Book Fairies is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that collects reading materials for people in need throughout metropolitan New York. The reading materials foster literacy and academic success, provide a respite from personal struggles, and nurture a love of reading across age groups. “Teachers and students alike contributed to our Book Drive,” Ms. Finnerty said. “Knowing these books were going to the less-fortunate throughout Long Island was the added incentive behind those donating. Folks doing their ‘spring cleaning’ and helping a good cause, was a win-win for all!”

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its official opening on July 6th. William K. Vanderbilt II - great-grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, the railroad and shipping magnate - died in 1944. His wife Rosamund continued to live in the Vanderbilt Mansion in Centerport until her death in 1947. He realized the potential for his sprawling estate to become a museum for what he called “the use, education and enjoyment of the general public.” That wish prompted him to leave his estate, and a trust fund to finance its operation, to Suffolk County. The county opened the museum to the public on July 6th, 1950. The anniversary coincides with Arcadia Publishing’s release of Eagle’s Nest: The William K. Vanderbilt II Estate by Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial services for the museum. The book is available on the Arcadia Publishing, Amazon and Barnes & Noble websites, in the Vanderbilt Museum Gift Shop and at local bookstores. Today, the Vanderbilt estate and museum are an important part of Long Island history. It is
a destination for regional visitors interested in natural history, the life of the oceans, armchair journeys through space, and the history of the privileged life on the Gold Coast from the Jazz Age through the Second World War. The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is another magnet for visitors. The museum decided to add a planetarium in the late 1960s. Trustees knew a planetarium would enhance the museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and to honor Mr. Vanderbilt’s love of science and astronomy, and his interest in celestial navigation. A planetarium also would augment the original Vanderbilt trust fund and help to ensure financial sustainability. The planetarium was opened to the public on June 28th, 1971. Mr. Vanderbilt - known to family and friends as Willie K. - loved the sea and the natural world. In his global oceanic travels, he collected fish and other marine life, birds, invertebrates and cultural artifacts for the personal museum he planned to
build on his Long Island estate. Willie Vanderbilt exhibited thousands of the marine specimens he had gathered - one of the world’s most extensive, privately assembled collections from the pre-atomic-era - in his own marine museum, the Hall of Fishes, which he opened to the public in 1922. Wings of the mansion contain galleries of his natural-history and cultural-artifact collections, including the Habitat with its nine wildanimal and marine-life dioramas and eight more in the adjacent Stoll Wing, all created by artisans from the American Museum of Natural History. The 43-acre waterfront museum complex counts among its extensive collections (which total more than 30,000 objects) the mansion, curator’s cottage, a seaplane hangar and boathouse, centuriesold household furnishings, rare decorative and fine art, the archives and photographic record of Vanderbilt’s circumnavigations of the globe, and published books of his travels. The estate, mansion and museum are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“Have I left things unfinished?” is something you might ask. I could make a very long list if I were just up to the task. There are cobwebs in the corners, multiplying as we speak. Where is the calm serenity at home for which I seek? I picture my house nicely decorated and in my mind “just so.” But to tell the truth, it’s nowhere near; I still have miles to go. My counters and tables are cluttered, I should just put everything away; But some things have no place to go, so in the way they stay.

I empty all the closets in an attempt to make it neat, But then I get real tired and I need to take a seat. All the dust has made me stuffy, and so I find it hard to work. I’ve decided it’s my family’s fault as I slowly go berserk.

They’ll get to it eventually: “Calm down, Mom, you’ll see.” “We’ll get it all straightened out - neat as it can be.” I go get bags and boxes and open all the drawers; As I start to go through each thing, I find it gives me pause. Memories are now unlocked, and my mind just wanders to the past. What happened to my great resolve to purge this house at last? I now feel very tired, and I think I’ll go to bed; But then I see my bed is strewn with piles of clothes instead. What happened to the promises that I swore I’d keep? I’ll get to it tomorrow, but I have piles to move before I sleep!

As a culmination of their study on the 20th century, James Wilson Young Middle School eighth-grade social studies students had the chance to speak with several local veterans during an interactive panel discussion in the school’s library. Leading up to the event, the students worked with teacher Peggy Vallely and library media specialist
Kelly Noeldechen to research the different wars that transpired during this timeframe and learn proper interviewing techniques. In small groups, they interviewed the veterans in attendance, discussing what their pre and post war experience was like, how they came to serve and how their experiences helped to shape their life. To preserve the moment

ROBOTICS HONOREES - Sachem High School Robotics Team, also known as Aftershock Team 263 had the opportunity to represent Sachem East and West at the 2015 U.S. FIRST World Championship. The team was presented with congratulatory Certifications for placing 14th out of 74 teams. U.S. First Robotics is a national competition for High School Students. Each year, they are given a new game, and each year, they have to build and program robots to compete in this game.
Retirees Celebrated retirement. “Thank you for all that you have done to educate the youth of Connetquot,” said Felicio. “Your dedication to the families of this community is greatly appreciated. We wish you good health, and happiness, throughout your retirement years.” The 18 retirees average over 25 years of dedicated service to the children of Bohemia, Oakdale and Ronkonkoma. INTERNATIONAL LUNCHEON - Connetquot Central School District’s Bosti Elementary School third grade students tasted food from around the world at the school’s 5th Annual Third Grade International Luncheon. Students from Mrs. McMullen’s class invited more than 100 parents and students to discover the world and its different counteries through food. Students feasted on a luncheon of international food and marched in a Parade of Nations to learn about the world’s diverse cultures.
BREAKING BOUNDARIES - Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Breaking Boundaries Club met with seven representatives from local and national charities to donate over $6,000 to improve the treatment, education and quality of life for children with mental and physical disabilities. Club members and club advisor Mrs. Peggy Dinkelman raised the money given to those charities by hosting a wide variety of fundraising events.

Lands End Caterers hosted the 2015 Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) Retirement dinner on Tuesday, June 16th. Eighteen professional, dedicated, educators were recognized, and commended, for their years of service to the children of the Connetquot Central School District. Fellow teachers, colleagues, spouses and friends joined CTA President Tony Felicio, Jr., in celebrating the careers of the latest class of retirees, wishing them all good health and happiness in their well-earned

School To Watch For the fourth time in its distinguished history, the Sayville Middle School has been recognized as a “School to Watch” (STW) by an arm of the NY State Education Department. Such schools have set themselves apart from the norm because of their “academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and superior organization and structure.” This year, the Sayville Middle School was acknowledged by the STW in the person of Dr. David Peyton, the NY State Director of STW, along with representatives of the NY State Education Department, NY State Senator Tom Croci, and other dignitaries, in a formal ceremony held in a Sayville Middle School assembly. Before the assembly began, the audience was entertained by student Avery Rosado, playing the cello, and by the SMS Band under the direction of teacher Kim Lattanzio. Student Harrison Bench led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, and then introduced Mr. Thomas Murray, the Principal. In his remarks, Mr. Murray welcomed the STW Committee and the honored guests. He thanked the Committee for their focus on recognizing educational excellence because honoring excellence is in itself a motivating factor for young people. He congratulated the students on their
achievements. However, he reminded them that only by their dedication, diligence, and hard work will they maintain the school’s standards. Mr. Murray called eight students to the stage and presented them with certificates acknowledging their leadership and honoring their contributions in meeting

Special Olympics At Sayville
In mid May, members of Sayville’s Athlete’s Helping Others organization came in great numbers to support four of Sayville’s own - Ashley Daigle, Jacob Feldman, Kaitlyn Finley, and Logan Hillery - who participated in the Special Olympic Spring Games at Southampton High School. Encouraged by the sea of blue AHO shirts that filled the stands, along with their rallying cheers, the four Special Olympians each medaled in their events. “MGRAWSOME!”
as Logan would say, his inspired contraction that means “Magnificent, great and awesome!” “We had a wonderful day,” Mrs. Suzanne Hoss, AHO advisor said, “and thank you to the Athletes Helping Others participants for making this such a special day for our athletes.” For approximately five years, Sayville’s AHO has been committed to giving back to both the school district and surrounding community, “by providing opportunities for student-
athletes to serve, these young men and women make meaningful contributions to society. Teams as well as individual student-athletes are involved in numerous charity and community events, both in and out of school.” By attending events such as these, AHO helps our students develop strong personal relations, and more importantly, allow them to discover that there is a purpose greater than oneself.
Rahman, Conor McGrath, Sierra Boyce, Avery Rosado, Erin Schaefer, and Steven John Devery, Jr. Brian Sherman, representing the NY State Education Department and the STW Committee, spoke briefly. He told them that the Sayville Middle School was only one of thirty schools in the state to be so honored this year, and for the school to receive this singular honor for the fourth time was “awesome.” He reminded the students that achievements such as theirs do not happen by accident: “It takes hard work, commitment, and dedication. And today’s ceremony is not the end of the process. Rather, it is a continuing journey that we take together in our quest to achieve our life goals.” He also had some words of advice: “Keep your eyes on the stars, but keep your feet on the ground. And always, always, strive for excellence in whatever you do.” Also in attendance were John Verdone, President of the Board of Education; Dr. Walter Schartner, Superintendent of Schools; Dr. Nance Wilson, of the STW Leadership Committee; Sal Nicosia, Legislative Aide to State Senator Thomas Croci; and Lorraine Neumeyer, Parent Member on the Site-Based Team.
Poster Contest Winner
Apparently, the “Cyberbullying Hurts” poster message was loud and clear for the judges to make their decision. Sayville’s very own Cherry Avenue Third grader Courtney Corcoran, who created and submitted the poster for the Suffolk County Anti-Cyber Bullying Campaign was recently informed that her entry was selected as the Elementary School, First Place winner in the campaign, run by the Suffolk County Youth Bureau and Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS). Also, Courtney’s FirstPlace poster will be displayed in the lobby of the County Executive’s office at the H. Lee Denison
Building during the month of October, 2015, as October is Bullying Prevention month. Mrs. Batterberry entered her class in the contest about a month ago. To be eligible, all elementary, middle school and high school aged youth had to submit an 8 ½” x 11” poster, containing original content, reflecting, in words and/or images, the child’s perception of cyberbullying and its impact. “The entries my class submitted were SO good this year,” Mrs. Batterberry said, I even joked with the class, as I mailed them off, predicting someone in THIS class is going to win. I was not surprised to learn our class had a winner, but I was beyond
impressed when I learned that Courtney was the First Place winner out of ALL the elementary submissions! Courtney is an amazing student and artist! Our whole class along with her family was SO proud of her!” Courtney shared her reaction as well. “When Dr. Ihne came into our room to tell the class one of us won a contest, I couldn’t think of anything I had done lately that I could win! When I heard it was the poster contest and that I won, I laughed because I redid that poster twice to make it better! I’m glad I did!” Congratulations Courtney!
Rudolph Giuliani will be the recipient of the “Lifetime Achievement” award at the 30th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic hosted by The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) on Monday, July 13th at the Old Westbury Country Club in Old Westbury. The Marty Lyons Foundation was created by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange,” and a dedicated group of volunteers. The Foundation grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 17 who have terminal or lifethreatening illnesses and is unique in that it considers granting a second wish to a deserving child. Mr. Giuliani has held a number of governmental positions during his career, including United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and is most remembered
for his leadership and resolve during and after the terrorist attacks that hit New York City on September 11th, 2001. He was named the “Person of the Year” for 2001 by Time magazine and was given an honorary knighthood by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 in recognition of his ability to bring not only New York City together during a time of unspeakable sorrow and terror, but also many people around the world. Upon leaving office in 2002, Mr. Giuliani founded a security consulting business, Giuliani Partners LLC, and in 2005 joined the law firm now known as Bracewell & Giuliani LLP. Mr. Giuliani met Mr. Lyons in the mid-1980s and has been a generous supporter of The Marty Lyons Foundation ever since. “The Mayor has done so much for the people of New York, and so much for me personally. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a

In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.
