During the event, the students learned about the history of Flag Day and the importance of honoring the nation’s symbol. Planned Spontaneity There are those who need to have every detail of each day planned down to the last minute, with little room for even the slightest compromise or delay. And then there are those individuals who prefer to fly by the seat of their pants; no blueprint, no nothing, open to whatever adventures might beckon. Me, I would definitely put myself in the former category. Routine is my friend; schedules my muse. There is something about the sense of accomplishment one gets from checking items off a “To Do” list that lends itself to peace of mind. Of course, life itself is not simply one giant “To Do” list. It requires a measure of flexibility and the ability to roll with those punches that may come flying your way. This is where that spontaneity comes into play. Case in point: I recently set out one Saturday afternoon to embark on a belated birthday

celebration for a close friend from high school. The plan – to head to the beach for our first, postMemorial Day outing, followed by dinner and maybe some prime sunset viewing and photography opportunities. “Happy Wanderers” we are, indeed. Of course, no sooner did I pack my beach bag, when the clouds rolled in, the winds kicked up and the sun disappeared behind a deep haze. Perfect sun bathing weather indeed. Alternate plans, anyone? Determined not to let the entire day go to waste, we feverishly started brainstorming, checking weather forecasts, tracking the storm radar and hoping for the best. Instead of heading out to the sand, we parked at Field #5 at Robert Moses and decided to take a little stroll over to Kismet, Fire Island for lunch, wander around a bit, and head back – hopefully before the skies decided to open up with the impending thunderstorm that had been threatening all day. Phase one went off without a

hitch, and the sun even managed to show itself for the majority of the journey. Imagine that. Phase two consisted of a quick little stopover at Gilgo Beach – after we both realized that neither of us had ever been there – before heading up to the Northport area for dinner and then to a laser light show at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. And then came the rains. Drenching, sheets of rain, pouring down on the windshield as we made our way down Ocean Parkway toward the bridge. Maybe there’ll be a rainbow, I mused, as I peered through the wipers. Then this detour will have been completely worth it, this trip to the beach on a cloudy day, interrupted by torrential rain, ending with one of nature’s most magical creations… And then, there it was, straight ahead, stretching over Cedar Beach. I looked at my friend and said, “Shall we pull over for a photo op?” Of course. Always time for a quick detour.

The Maggie Fischer Memorial Great South Bay Swim will take place on July 22nd. The swim will begin at the Fire Island Lighthouse and finish at Gilbert Park in Brightwaters. The distance is approximately 5.5 miles, with each swimmer having up to four hours to complete the race. The Cross Bay Swim has been a tradition on Long Island since 1927, taking a 26-year hiatus from 19731999. Lifelong Bay Shore resident Rory Allen revived the race in 1999, recruiting lifeguards to participate in its return. Maggie Fischer, a 17 year-old senior at St. Anthony’s High School and a lifeguard at Saltaire, Fire Island, who had been training for the swim, passed away just a few days before the race took place. The swim continued, with

Healthy Suffolk: Diabetes Prevention will be presented through October 17th at the

Anniversary Commemorated of celestial navigation when he traveled the world’s oceans in the early twentieth century. Following an extensive $4-million makeover and technological update, the Vanderbilt Planetarium reopened on March 15th, 2013, as one of the finest and most advanced in the United States and the largest astronomical facility on Long Island. Suffolk County provided $3.9-million of the financing for the Planetarium renovation. Private donations totaling $160,000 financed building enhancements: new theater seating; an improved heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system; a lobby facelift and a new gift shop. Following the reopening, the Planetarium received the most generous gift in the Museum’s history. Charles and Helen Reichert pledged $1.7 million over 20 years to support the Planetarium, its programs and its future. In their honor, the facility was named The Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. Lance Reinheimer, executive director, said, “We are especially grateful

to the Reichert family, Suffolk County and private donors for their extraordinary support of the Museum, its education programs, and its enduring value to Long Island.” On June 28th, the day before the 1971 public opening, the Vanderbilt held a private event for a select group of 120 business leaders, legislators, friends of the Vanderbilt, and planetarium directors from other cities. Suffolk County Legislator John V.N. Klein, then chairman of the Legislature, called the show “spectacular” in Newsday’s coverage. “I am overwhelmed,” he said, adding that the Planetarium “is a great educational asset to the community.” In 1987, after welcoming more than 2.2 million visitors, the Vanderbilt refurbished the Planetarium, acoustically redesigned its newly renamed Sky Theatre, and equipped it with the latest audio equipment. The Planetarium classroom received a makeover, too, with the addition of a then-advanced VCR (video cassette recorder) and video laser-disk equipment.

Special Flag

Suffolk County Correction Officer Thomas Miller recently engaged in a special project with 6th and 7th grade students at the William Paca Middle School in the William Floyd School District. The initiative was a part of the Sheriff’s Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.RE.A.T.) Program, a curriculum the Sheriff’s Office conducts in schools throughout Suffolk County. During his time teaching in the classroom, the students expressed an interest in giving back to their community, and decided to write letters of support for our United States military serving abroad. Officer Miller offered to coordinate the effort with one of his colleagues, Correction Officer Jose Moreno, who is currently

serving in the Air Force overseas and is on military leave from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. The students created drawings, cartoons, letters, cards and many other special items, and Officer Miller mailed the package to Officer Moreno, who then distributed it to his fellow Airmen, who were serving in Kuwait at the time. To commemorate the students’ heartfelt best wishes, the Airmen commissioned an American Flag in the name of the students from the William Paca Middle School and the G.R.E.A.T. On June 29th, the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum will observe the 45th anniversary of the opening of its Planetarium, now known as the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium. The anniversary coincides with the final stage of the Planetarium’s technological update – the installation of a cutting-edge SkyLase laser light-show system with entertainment programs, from Audio Visual Imagineering, Inc. (AVI). The Planetarium’s advanced GeminiStar III system – which includes a Konica Minolta Infinium-L star projector, full-dome video and surroundsound – offers audiences a spectacular, immersive experience. Suffolk County built the $1-million Planetarium in 1971 as a way to increase visitorship and to produce operating income to supplement the museum’s original $2-million trust fund. The Planetarium enhanced the Museum’s ability to carry out the science-education aspect of its mission and honored William K. Vanderbilt II’s love of science and astronomy – and his use

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students and staff blanketed the grounds in the nation’s colors of red, white and blue to celebrate this year’s Flag Day. During the event, the students learned about the history of Flag Day and the importance of honoring the nation’s symbol. Additionally, students were encouraged to take time on

the nationally celebrated day to demonstrate their patriotism and pride for their country. Activities included members of the AMVETS Post 111 from Patchogue assisting in raising the school’s flag; honoring winners of the school Flag Day poetry and poster contest; and having the entire school join together to sing several patriotic

songs in addition to the orchestra and chorus performing. This year’s event also featured a special fly-over from three WWII biplanes. The pilots passed over the school twice in triple formation and visited with the students after successfully landing at the neighboring Bayport Aerodrome.

Open to Public The newly constructed Whitehouse Playground is now officially open to the public. The 77’ x 65’ play structure, which includes equipment that is easy to use for all children, including ramps, large entrances, slides, recreational equipment and areas for wheelchair access, is the first playground that is accessible for children with disabilities in the Sayville area. Though located quite a distance from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, the Whitehouse Playground located on Cherry Avenue in West Sayville offers a prime location for all children to play and stay active for years to come. The playground sponsor, Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay took the lead in transforming this vacant parcel into a playground to better suit the needs of the community. “This playground really

hits home for me, said Lindsay. “My youngest sister is handicapped and I know how difficult it was for my parents to find a safe and welcoming environment for her to play as a child. This playground will provide all families with an inclusive place for children to feel safe, play, and get along.” The playground was officially named in honor of Betty Whitehouse last month in a unanimous vote by the Suffolk County Legislature. Whitehouse, who passed away last December at 93, was a Sayville teacher, author, philanthropist, and civic leader who made momentous strides in advancing STEM programs throughout her life. Whitehouse earned her bachelor’s degree from NYU in 1944 and her master’s degree from Adelphi University shortly after.

For many years Betty served on the Sayville School Board, volunteered at the Sayville Food Pantry and was a member of the Sayville Garden Club where she served as president. She was a longtime member and past president of the Sayville Rotary Club and also served on the Friends of Sayville Library board. “I’ve heard so many residents speak of the great effort Betty put into people and her community,” said Lindsay. “She truly cared for those around her. Whether it was a friend, a student, a neighbor, or a stranger, Betty went above and beyond to make a difference in their lives.” Though the playground is now officially open, a formal ribbon cutting will take place in September with Mrs. Whitehouse’s family, friends, and neighbors.

Lesson on Justice As an extension of their classroom lessons on social studies and English Language Arts, Academy Street Elementary School’s fifth-grade students recently participated in an interactive and educational program called the “Trial of Goldilocks.” The program, designed by retired lawyer Glen Vogel, called for students to take an in-depth look at the criminal justice system using the familiar

tale of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” To enhance their understanding of the concepts discussed, the study unfolded in the form of an interactive and creative play. The students prepared for the production during a six-week workshop, during which they submitted a persuasive essay for a desired role and practiced their reading fluency and public speaking as they perfected the script.

During the mock trial, the students dressed in costumes and sported various props as they testified on the actions that lead up to the arrest of Goldilocks. At the end, the school’s fourth-graders, who served as the jury, convened to determine if Goldilocks was guilty of the charges before her, which included criminal mischief, trespassing and petty larceny.

To celebrate International Albinism Awareness Day, students at the Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently learned about albinism from fourth grade student Daniel Avila. Avila has albinism and is legally blind, a common combination because both are affected by a lack of melanin.

Avila and his vision teacher prepared an interactive PowerPoint presentation to teach more than twenty fourth grade students in Dina Pinelli’s class about how to prevent sun damage to skin if you have albinism, characteristics of a person with albinism and how to celebrate differences rather than bullying people because of how they look.

Simulated Lesson Ms. Pinelli’s class also wore “crazy hats” during the presentation, symbolizing the need for people with albinism to protect themselves from the sun. The purpose of this event was to increase awareness about this uncommon genetic disorder and promote anti-bullying in schools

Avila, who has albinism and is legally blind, recently spoke with more than twenty 4th grade students in Ms. Dina Pinelli’s class about how to celebrate differences rather than bullying people because of how they look. The purpose of this event was to increase awareness about albinism and promote anti-bullying in schools.

“We don’t want kids to get all jammed up and ruin the rest of their lives or fatally injure someone else,” said Deputy Sheriff Thomas Incidence from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, speaking at a simulated drunk buggy presentation at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center. The purpose of students wearing goggles and driving on a simulated obstacle course gives them the perception of being intoxicated. “We want students to be safe. It’s prom season now and we need them to get the message that you can’t drink or text and drive,” said ESBOCES School Social Worker Amy Roland. The drinking age may be 21 but many young adults

On Wednesday, May 18th, Dowling College Librarian Diane Holliday led a presentation at the Connetquot Public Library focusing on the abundance of life found in the Long Island South Shore environment during the Gilded Age. The Gilded Age began at the end of the Civil War and lasted until the early 1900’s. During this time, a number of wealthy families built lavish mansions on the South Shore of Long Island, including the Vanderbilts. The development of mansions and lavish estates had an effect on the ecosystem. The need for materials, logging, homebuilding and boatbuilding changed the

ecosystem. Hunting also changed the environment during the Gilded Age. While hunting was a necessity to eat, a number of hunting clubs developed; the Olympic Club, the Wyandanch Club and the Sportsman Club. The hunted species included ducks, deer and small game. Along with the lavish parties and lifestyles of the rich came Haute Couture clothing. Fancy and expensive hats made of plume feathers and pelts used for clothing were prominent. Long Island’s abundance of native plants and plants also played a significant role in the dynamics of a complex ecosystem. Non-natural

Initiative Recognized Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco announced today that the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Incarcerated Youth Initiative has been recognized with a 2016 Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards are granted to counties for programs that serve to improve services to county residents, and are judged on their innovativeness, effectiveness, and for delivering results. The Sheriff’s Office received the award in the category of Criminal Justice and Public Safety. Sheriff DeMarco, who is also the Chairman of the County’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, launched the Incarcerated Youth Initiative in 2011 and has since cut the youthful jail population

by 75%. The program provides mentoring, education, counseling, case-management and transitional housing to adolescents in the jail, and works collaboratively with the non-profit sector, government partners, the courts, local universities and Eastern Suffolk BOCES to help youth as they transition back into our communities. “I have made youthful inmate rehabilitation and collaborative justice initiatives a priority of my work in public office because with the right interventions, these kids can go on to lead successful lives. In the past, they would have cycled in and out of the Correctional Facility long into adulthood. We have successfully reversed that trend - and our communities are

benefiting and so are the taxpayers,” stated DeMarco. In 2013, the Sheriff’s Office received a NACo Achievement Award for the Sheriff’s Youth Reentry Task Force, which brings together service providers from all sectors to help plan, design and continually improve services to justice-involved youth. One of those service providers, Thaddaeus Hill from Timothy Hill Children’s Ranch, recently stated, “Sheriff DeMarco has pioneered programs that few in this country have had the courage to take on.
