Excitement rose within me as my vision Settled on the spectrum of sunset’s stain Bloomed all through the vista The horizon on fire Shades of magenta, rose, crimson, flashed upward Enjoined in a kaleidoscope of vibrant tints Striating color through the descending dusk Comingling within space of greys Jetting into dusky blues throughout the atmosphere The sky was emblazoned with a scarlet backdrop Squeezed through silhouettes of dusty pink and gold Honey flecks permeated puffy clouds Its rosy palette flowered into peach and tangerine Rows of grey skies in budding spring waves Tried to deflect the radiant light Enhancing the span of the universe Unable to take my eyes off seeing glorious blushes Stretched from east to west within my view Of the wondrous sight I beheld was . . . One Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the schedule for the 2017 Suffolk County Summer Youth Connection Program. The program, in partnership with the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc., the Wyandanch Youth Center, the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport, and the Town of Huntington Youth Bureau, provides free educational and recreational activities to youths between the ages of 12-18 in the communities of Brentwood, Huntington, Central Islip, Wyandanch and Bellport. “With summer right around the corner, we are reminding local students to get involved and sign up for a host of activities in their community,” said County Executive Bellone. “Whether it’s learning how to prepare a meal or playing a basketball game, there is something for

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the upcoming meeting schedule for the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Program. The Program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Veterans’ Service Agency and Suffolk County United Veterans, is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and other adjustment conditions. All veterans, regardless of discharge status, are welcome to attend, and no DD Form 214 is required to participate. “As a veteran, Iunderstand the importance of having a strong support system at home when you begin the transition back into civilian life,” said County Executive Bellone. “I encourage any veterans to attend this important

program that has made a positive impact for veterans in Suffolk County and across the state. Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency Director, Thomas Ronayne said, “The Joseph Dwyer Program has proven to be an excellent fit within the veterans community. Complimented by the many supportive services available through the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency, and our partner, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, we are seeing realresults for veterans and their families.” The Joseph P. Joseph Dwyer, who was a U.S. Army Combat Medic and Mount Sinai resident that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. PFC Dwyer received national attention after a photograph surfaced that showed him carrying a wounded Iraqi boy, while his unit was fighting its way to Baghdad. The June 6th BayportBlue Point Board of Education meeting celebrated multiple districtwide achievements, praising students and staff alike, for their contributions toward maintaining a flourishing learning environment. To begin the night’s recognitions, multiple district kindergarten through fifth-grade students were rewarded with tokens of appreciation from the board for their performances/artistic projects in the PTA Reflections Arts Program Contest. To qualify for recognition by the PTA, these students utilized their creativity to formulate projects spanning multiple categories all with the central theme of “What is your story?” in mind. In addition to the students celebrated for their success on the regional

level, Sylvan Avenue Elementary student Charlotte Passamonte was honored for winning the Award of Merit at the state level for her dance routine. According to their website, PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Bayport-Blue Point High School’s 19 summa cum laude students were also recognized by the board for their years of hard work and maintaining a grade point average above 96.5 by the end of their academic careers. Congratulations to Matthew Abruzzese Ott, Abigail Auwaerter, Christopher Bartolini, Davis Bates, Abby Brewer, Christian Buckheit, Matthew Califano, Jayne Cudia, Abigail Edgeller, Olivia Ingrassia, Kraig Klein, Allyson Koehler,

More than 150 Long Island community members and people with disabilities recently supported ACLD Foundation and the over 3,000 people that Bethpageheadquartered Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) serves each year by participating in ACLD Foundation’s Second Annual Walk/Run: Journey To An Enviable Life at Heckscher State Park in East Islip, where the event raised more than $31,000 benefiting ACLD programs and services. The activities kicked-off with opening remarks from ACLD Executive Director Robert C. Goldsmith, followed by a pre-run stretch and warmup led by HOPEFitness, a fitness and sports training center that provides classes and fitness programs for participants who are physically or intellectually challenged. The event included a

5K Walk/Run and a 1K Fun Run. Both noncompetitive, untimed events were held on flat, paved courses so adults and children of all ages had the opportunity to take part, along with participants in wheelchairs. T-shirts and refreshments were provided and Cox Media’s WBAB provided on-site music as the event’s Media Sponsor. The Walk/Run benefited ACLD, a leading nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities with opportunities to pursue enviable lives, increase independence and foster supportive relationships within the community. “Our Second Annual Walk/Run was a great success,” said Robert C. Goldsmith. “The smiles on participants’ faces were priceless. So many people came together to support

On June 27th, WUSB 90.1 FM Stony Brook will mark 40 years of Long Island non-commercial radio broadcast service. WUSB broadcasts originate from the campus of Stony Brook University, Long Island, New York. WUSB was originally an on-campus carriercurrent student station from 1963 until receiving Federal Communications Commission licensing for FM transmission in June 1977. The days and weeks prior to the event, there will special on-air guests and programs regarding the momentous occasion. WUSB has achieved this noteworthy 40 year milestone due to the

efforts of a supportive administration at Stony Brook University as well as to the students, staff, faculty, alumni and community volunteers who have provided creative and innovative radio programming to listeners on Long Island and in Southern Connecticut for four decades. At its May 19th, Convention, a motion was made and approved to dissolve the Long Island Federation of Women’s Clubs, Inc. (LIFWC) after 124 years. Since its founding in 1895, the LIFWC has always taken pride and dignity in serving the women’s clubs and students of Long Island, including the awarding of hundreds of educational gifts totaling thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it has become apparent in recent years that its programs and activities have become incorporated into the

workings of individual women’s clubs throughout Long Island. Frances Rotondo, LIFWC President, chaired the last meeting on June 12th where board members discussed preserving important records and memorabilia documenting the history of the organization. Under the leadership of Tina Diamond, Convention Chair, and her committee, the LIFWC held its last Convention at Chateau Briand where educational awards totaling $8,000 were presented to eight Long Island high school seniors planning to

continue their academic studies in various colleges and universities. At the General Federation of Women’s Clubs – NYS Convention, the LIFWC was the recipient of several awards: the Junior League Special Projects Advocates for Children Award; the Community Service Award and a special award to Linda Akers, Past LIFWC President, for her golf poem. Fifth-grade Drama Club students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently performed a theater production titled “Aesop’s Modern Fables: Aesop and his Fables Live Today!” To prepare for the

production, the students rehearsed under the direction of Drama Club advisor and third-grade teacher Lori Tutino. Throughout the course of the performance, the students put modern day twists on popular fables, such as “The Boy Who

New Assistant Superintendent The Bayport-Blue Point School District is pleased to welcome Richard Snyder as the new assistant superintendent for finance and operations, effective July 1st. Since 2007, Mr. Snyder has worked as the assistant superintendent for business within the Eastport-South Manor School District. During his time in this position, he managed $100 million in capital construction projects, reduced expenditures by $15 million over an eight-

year time period as well as designed and restructured all internal controls and financial reporting requirements. Prior to his position in Eastport-South Manor, Mr. Snyder worked as an external and internal audit manager for R.S. Abrams & Company and had previously served as the assistant superintendent for business and technology in the Bellmore Public Schools. In addition to his administrative experience, Mr. Snyder worked as a

business education teacher at the H. Frank Carey High School of Sewanhaka Central High School District and is a certified public accountant. Mr. Snyder holds a bachelor’s degree in science of accounting from St. Joseph’s College, a professional diploma in school business administration and a Master of Science in computer science degree, both received at Long Island University.

Canine Companions Students in Tiffany Prin’s Life Skills class at Ronkonkoma Middle School learned about the important role of service dogs when Mrs. Prin’s husband, Thomas Prin, recently visited with his personal service dog Halona to conducted an inclass presentation. Throughout the

duration of the visit, the students were able to ask questions regarding how Halona assists Mr. Prin in his everyday life, and were even treated to demonstrations by Halona herself as she obeyed commands such as “heel,” “fetch” and “speak.” Recognizing the significant impact these

animals can have on a person’s life, the class made a $105 donation to Canine Companies for Independence, a nonprofit organization which assists those with disabilities. The students collected these donations through a school recycling effort that they spearheaded.

Proclamation Presented Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay recently attended Bohemia Fire Department’s Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremonies, where he presented a proclamation to The Joseph Kovarik American Legion Post 1146 for their service to the residents and community. The Joseph Kovarik American Legion Post 1146’s building on Hubal Street in Bohemia was built primarily by Legionnaires. The construction that began

in 1940 was dedicated on September 21st, 1941 and named for Joseph Kovarik; a World War I veteran that passed away in an elevator accident in 1927. Post 1146 was honored by the Bohemia Fire Department with the Edward E. Krepela Citizen of the Year Award for their continued contributions to the community through education of our military history, honoring and memorializing our veterans, and being staunch advocates for local

veterans in need. “Those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom deserve our unyielding gratitude” said Legis. Lindsay. “This gratitude is shown in the turnout at the ceremonies year in and year out. Program seeks to leverage Vet-to-Vet relationships to enhance positive change through planned learning, and personal growth experiences including group and/or individual peer engagement. The unique nature of the Joseph P. Dwyer Program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators, which helps provide a comfortable and familiar setting for veterans seeking assistance. As a result of the Program’s successes locally, the Suffolk County model has now been replicated and administered in 16 counties across New York State. The program offers a confidential, one-onone peer approach that has captured national attention, and is being considered as a model to expand across the country. In Congress, Rep. Zeldin recently re-introduced his bill, H.R. 897, to expand nationally the PFC Joseph Dwyer Program. This bipartisan legislation has received support from the entire Long Island Congressional delegation.

For the period of January 2016 through December 2016, there were 323 Dwyer peer group meetings held with a total attendance of 1,211 – averaging four veterans per meeting. The total unduplicated number of veterans that served in peer group meetings last year was 334. On average, there were six weekly meeting sites available for these groups each month, including Amityville, Huntington, Bay Shore, Patchogue, Yaphank, Riverhead, and Sag Harbor. As a result of additional state funding provided and willing community partners, Suffolk County was able to establish several additional bi-weekly and monthly group opportunities. effort.” New York State Senator Tom Croci said: “The circumstances that many of our men and women in the military endure are sometimes beyond comprehension. Having a program like this to offer the mental and emotional support is a terrific step in reacclimatizing them back into society and their homes. I applaud Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Camp Pa-quatuck for their commitment and dedication to our service men and women in implementing this first rate program.” Since its inception in 2012, over 10,000 veterans have participated in the Joseph P. Dwyer Program countywide – sharing their experiences with fellow veterans and allowing the healing process to begin. As part of the outreach effort, the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency issued an informational pamphlet on the Joseph P. Dwyer Program to veteran households throughout the County. Those outreach efforts continue as the

Program builds awareness and participation. Suffolk County Veterans Services Agency Director, Thomas Ronayne said: “A certainty among veterans is that a bond exists with our fellow veterans. Men and women we have never met are our brothers, sisters and family. Families take care of each other and that is precisely what we try to do through the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency and the Joseph Dwyer Program. Veterans working with other veterans to serve and protect one another in the ways that we are uniquely equipped to do. Suffolk’s long tradition of honoring, respecting and serving our veterans was made stronger today through the annual Day of Wellness.” This innovative program provides safe, confidential, supportive, and educational opportunities for veterans who have faced challenges in their postservice transition to meet with other veterans in support of their regaining their personal resilience and direction. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today hosted the fourth annual Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans’ and Family Day of Wellness, which provides a setting for local veterans and their family members dealing with post-service transition issues to participate in wellness related activities. The free event also serves as a chance to provide critical information and awareness about the Joseph P. Dwyer Peer to Peer Program, which is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and other adjustment conditions. The program is named for Private First Class Joseph Dwyer, who was a U.S. Army Combat Medic and Mount Sinai resident that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. PFC Dwyer received national attention after a photograph surfaced that showed him carrying a wounded Iraqi boy, while his unit was fighting its way to Baghdad. After

First Science Symposium

Connetquot High School’s science research program recently held its first Science Symposium, which allowed students to showcase their scientific studies through presentations, discussions, and questions and answers. Throughout the course of the evening, Connetquot High School science research teacher John Halloran talked about the opportunities students have each year, such as the Barcode Long Island program through Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and the micrometeorite project through the National

Synchrotron Light Source II at Brookhaven National Laboratory. As 18 studentprojects were on display, incoming freshmen saw what current students are studying as a result of the program and had a better understanding of the possibilities that lie ahead. Additionally, Connetquot High School Class of 2017 valedictorian Mit Patel, a four-year member of the program, spoke about what he has gained by being a part of this program. “Through this program, students have an unparalleled opportunity to dive deeply into an area of interest, explore an

internship with a scientist, prepare for a STEM career, and work with science-minded peers,” said Connetquot School District Secondary STEM Chairperson Dr. Mary Loesing. Volunteers Donate A community group dedicated to helping our veterans who are in need of an assistance dog donated $20,000 to America’s Vet Dogs this week - and named two of five new service dogs to honor local heroes. ‘Friends of America’s Vet Dogs’ made the donation at the Smithtown training campus of America’s Vet Dogs, and named five new puppies who will now begin training to become assistance dogs for honorably discharged United States veterans. The group of volunteers, who hail from Sayville, Patchogue, Brentwood, Holbrook, Hauppauge, Holtsville and beyond, started in 2015 and have sponsored ten service dogs so far. Group members have always named the puppies they sponsor to honor someone who has provided exemplary service to our country or to our veterans. Because the greater Sayville community has been so helpful, with much of the money raised coming from an annual springtime ‘Chinese Auction’ held at Saint Lawrence parish, they decided to name one of their newest future assistance dogs “Sayville.” “We wanted to show the Greater Sayville community how truly appreciative we are for their generosity and support every year” said Cliff Miller, a founding member of “Friends of America’s Vet Dogs.” Another service dog-to-be in this sponsored litter was also named to honor a local hero - Lieutenant Florence

Evans, a Sayville resident who was the only Long Island female to be killed during World War 2. Lieutenant Evans served as an Army nurse in Europe during the war, was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for bravery under fire, survived some of the war’s bloodiest battles but was killed on the very last day of the war - on VE Day - when her jeep hit a land mine. The service dog was named “Florence” in her honor.

The third new service dog was named “Ruby”, to honor U.S. Army Nurse Corps Colonel Ruby Bradley, who remains the most highly decorated female in the history of the U S Army. Colonel Bradley almost lost her life twice while helping or saving others, once during World War 2 when taken prisoner in the Philippines and again

during the Korean War while evacuating her nurses and patients. She died in 2002 at the age of 94. Webber was the name given to the next puppy sponsored by Friends of America’s Vet Dogs, this to honor U.S. Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer Bernard Webber who died in 2009 at the age of 80. Webber carried out the near impossible rescue of 32 sailors whose tanker was sinking in the Atlantic Ocean in 1952, during a horrific storm while using a small boat capable of carrying only eight passengers. This remains the greatest “small boat rescue” in the history of the US Coast Guard. The last dog was given the name Ballard, in honor of a US Navy Medical Corpsman who was awarded the Medal of Honor after throwing himself onto a live grenade to save the lives of two US Marines he was treating during the Viet Nam War. Corpsman Donald E. Ballard, who was since promoted to the rank of Colonel, survived the 1968 act of heroism when the grenade malfunctioned and delayed exploding until he got up and tossed it aside, this after his patients had been safely evacuated. Ballard, now 71, resides in Kansas City, Missouri. A Display of Understanding After spending months studying the events of the Holocaust, eighthgrade students enrolled in Kenneth Leman’s honors history class at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently applied their extensive knowledge of the time period to create an informative historical timeline along the back wall of their classroom. The students put in

the effort to chronicle Holocaust-oriented details such as Kristallnacht and concentration camps, and paid tribute to the victims who lost their lives during this time period, including photographs for visual reference. Additionally, within the center of the timeline was a giant shape of a butterfly made out of thousands of buttons representing the

millions of victims who perished. According to Mr. Leman, this project was implemented not only to give the students extensive understanding of the Holocaust and surrounding events, but to also show them that these types of actions should never be tolerated and the importance of standing up for the oppressed.

Food Drive for Veterans Supervisor Ed Romaine announced today that Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veteran’s Services will be holding a food drive for Veterans in need from Monday, June 26th through Friday, July 14th.
