The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org

New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for

After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

Home Repair Grants up to $10,000 available to Eligible Applicants

Students Stirrup Service The eighth grade students of the East Woods School recently participated in a brand new Leadership Program established by Head of School, Laura Kang. As part of the program, students met and heard from the executive directors of seven nonprofits in the fall. After learning about the mission, programs, financial structure and goals of each program, they had the difficult task of choosing one to support with their year-long project. The students chose to help and support Pal-O-Mine located in Islandia, NY. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization whose goal is to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to aid growth, learning, and healing. Individuals that utilize this organization consist of children and adults with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military

and the economically compromised. Pal-O-Mine’s programs include adaptive riding and unmounted horsemanship, equine assisted learning, equine assisted psychotherapy, hippotherapy, military programs, and corporate workshops. “Students gain many skills in the leadership programs we have here at Pal-O-Mine,” said Lisa Gatti, CEO and Founder of Pal-O-Mine. “From the time they walk onto the property, students remain respectful to themselves, their peers, their staff, our staff/volunteers and all of the animals. They are asked to hand in any electronics they may have in order to strengthen peer relationships and get the most out of the time they spend with the animals and each other.” Some of the tasks that the East Woods students completed at the facility included mucking

paddocks for the horses, disposing of heavy manure filled wheelbarrows, raking, brushing and shedding out the miniature horses. While taking on the responsibility of exercising the donkeys, students also walked the donkeys over to Pal-OMine’s separate property and visited participants of J-STEP, an adult vocational program provided by the organization. Other responsibilities included bathing, brushing and walking the horses. The East Woods students donated supplies such as gloves, tape, leather cleaner, towels and a wheelbarrow and spent 26 volunteer hours of work and labor onsite. At the completion of the program, the students traveled back to Pal-O-Mine to deliver almost $2,000 worth of cash, gift cards and wish list items to Lisa Gatti, CEO and Founder of Pal-O-Mine.

Cheerleaders And Arrowettes Honored

At the June 4, 2019 General Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Tom Muratore, (4th District) and his colleagues had the pleasure of presenting proclamations to the Sachem High School North Cheerleaders and Arrowettes, recognizing their Championship Seasons for 2018-2019. The Sachem North

Cheerleaders, led by coaches Danielle Gresalfi and Jaclyn Tartaro ended their phenomenal season as County Champions, State Champions and named as a Scholar Athlete Team. The Arrowettes Dance Team, under the leadership of coaches Katie Prusinski and David Maczkiewicz, earned the title of NDA National Champions in Small

Varsity Jazz and Small Varsity Team Performance. “I am so proud of Sachem North Cheer and Dance teams for these stellar accomplishments,” stated Legislator Muratore. “The hard work and perseverance resulted in state and national championship titles, and I congratulate them all on a job well done. Hope to see them back here in 2020.”

The NAMM Foundation has designated South Country Central School District as one of the nation’s 2019 Best Communities for Music Education for its demonstration of exceptionally high commitment to music education and access to music instruction for all district students. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants to advance active participation in music. The district music program was analyzed for funding, staffing of qualified teachers, commitment to standards and access to music instruction. The district is proud of its music program which offers instruction in orchestra and band instruments, piano, chorus and music theory.

Elementary instruction begins in kindergarten and third grade students may join the chorus, followed by orchestra or band in fourth grade. As students reach the high school level, they have opportunities to perform with the freshman orchestra, string orchestra for grades 10-12, or to audition for membership in the concert orchestra. There is also a high school wind ensemble and symphonic band for students who play band instruments, as well as membership in the school’s mixed chorus. Piano I and II is offered, as well as Music Theory I and Advanced Placement Music Theory for those planning on continuing their education in music on the college level. The district’s various ensembles also compete in the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association All-County festival, the Long Island

String Festival Association festival, and the New York State Council of Administrators of Music Education All-County festival. Opportunities to perform and compete also include the New York State School Music Association’s Ensemble and Solo and Majors Organization festivals. The district’s most talented studentmusicians also apply to participate in NYSSMA’s All-State festival. Music Chairperson James Uzzi explained that South Country supports the music program in ways other districts do not. “Because of support from Central Administration, the Board of Education and the community, we have the resources to do what it takes to make the music program visible and one that serves all interested students,” he said.

Official Authors And Illustrators for math, students in Gianfortone’s class set out to publish a book that depicted where math is present in our everyday lives. Each student wrote a page for the book and created an illustration to accompany their writing, showcasing their artistic abilities.

At the conclusion of the project, students attended a “red carpet event” where family and friends were invited to hear the first reading of their new literary masterpiece before celebrating their impressive accomplishment.

Learning Behind The Scenes Sachem High School students recently gained valuable industry insight from numerous professionals in a vast range of career areas as part of the annual New York Jets Sports Business Day Career Exploration Field Trip at MetLife Stadium. Students from Sachem High Schools East and North in Lisa Anthony’s and William Ward’s sports

management classes learned from high-profile Jets executives whose roles are integral to the success of the Jets organization. Students participated in engaging conversations on the executive’s roles and how they obtained their positions. Throughout the day, students learned about marketing, media content, community relations, finance and accounting, team merchandise,

information technology and event operations, among several other areas in the organization’s operation. As part of the unique experience, students were granted behind-the-scenes access to 10 key stadium locations, including the press box, locker room, premium clubs and the field.

On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 2019, 20 PSEG Long Island employees returned to the home of a World War II veteran and his wife to do a spring cleaning. The employee-volunteers performed many tasks for 96-year-old Morris Koffer and his 89-yearold wife, Edith, such as repairing screen doors, and replacing a broken window pane. Some employees also joined Koffer in the basement to help him discard unwanted items that he and his family had collected more than five decades. The Koffers watched happily as the volunteers in their orange “PSEG Long Island Community Partners” shirts spiffed up their home. Morris Koffer shared that he was filled with nothing but joy and gratitude. “I’m very happy for the help. I’m very surprised; very thankful,” he said. “I never expect anything from anyone because I lived my

life helping others.” Morris Koffer was 21 years old and still training to become an Army Air Corps radio communication specialist when Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. After his wartime service, Morris Koffer worked in a school teaching radio broadcasting, and later installed TV antennas on the roofs of homes until he was 86. He retired from that profession after he was injured in a fall. The PSEG Long Island volunteers took time to sit with Morris Koffer and look at photos of him from the 1940s and 50s while he shared stories of his time in the Army Air Corps. This is not the first time that a PSEG Long Island cleanup team has volunteered at the Koffer home. Last year, a dozen volunteers cleared yard waste, twigs, old leaves and other debris from the property and inside the home. At the time, volunteers

noticed the Koffers’ American flag was tattered. They removed it and hung a brand new flag while Morris Koffer looked on with pride. Since that day, when he returns home from medical appointments and sees the flag, Morris Koffer says he thinks of the generosity of the PSEG Long Island volunteers and how they helped him and his wife. “I am so proud of the way our employees show they care about our customers,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience and utility marketing. “Participating in a community service activity like this, especially helping someone who has touched so many lives, is rewarding for both our employees and our customers.” For more information on how PSEG Long Island supports the communities it serves, visit https://www. psegliny.com/page.cfm/ Community.

A number of educators from the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the Distinctive Educator’s Institute’s sixth annual “Final Stretch” Conference that took place at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University campus in an effort to share best practices regarding the district’s premier English language arts department. At the literacy conference, which is targeted toward K-8 educators, Ronkonkoma Middle School educator Hallie Weil presented a workshop, “The Powerful Impact of Independent

Reading in Middle School.” During her presentation, Ms. Weil provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the powerful impact that setting aside independent reading time in the middle school classroom can have upon student performance. Additionally, Connetquot faculty occupied the spotlight once again when Helen B. Duffield Elementary school teachers Karen Pitka and Stephanie Russo presented, “A Delicious Literary Treat: A Book Tasting to Delight Readers.” This dynamic duo highlighted their

creative, motivating spin on teaching genres in which they set up a mock “restaurant” setting in the school’s library where students are able to sample a number of literary genres. “In sharing their best practices in literacy instruction with other Long Island educators, Connetquot’s faculty shone brightly at the ‘Final Stretch’ Conference,” said Connetquot Central School District Director of ELA Christina Poppe. “It is with great pride that the district recognizes their drive, professionalism and accomplishments.”

Breaking Out The Gardening Gloves

Volunteers for the South Country Community Leadership Network pulled out their gardening gloves and tools during participation in the fifth annual Spring Front Yard Cleanup, held on May 11 in Bellport. Each year, the Network receives nominations for those whose properties are in need of a little sprucing up and TLC. Winners work alongside the crew of volunteers to beautify the properties through the removal of leaves and yard debris, lawn cutting, hedge trimming and plantings. One hundred percent of materials used during the cleanup are generously

donated by local businesses and government. The Network’s goal in hosting the Front Yard Cleanup is to assist residents in making a better first impression of the South Country community. The South Country Central School District would like to thank the following individuals and businesses for their donations: Bloomin Haus, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco’s office, Fantastic Gardens of Long Island, Home Depot in Bellport, Jason Crane Landscaping, Brookhaven Town Councilman Michael Loguercio’s office, Susan Toplitz, Woodside Nursery

Habitat for Humanity Student Build

Members of the Earl L. Vandermeulen High School Interact Club in the Port Jefferson School District recently took part in a Habitat for Humanity Student Build. The 15 students were selected to work on a new home in Bellport, where they diligently installed new fencing around the

property and helped ready the home for the family who will be moving in later this year. The students raised $1,500 for Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk, partially from a cheesecake fundraiser they held and some coming from donations. “The experience was

truly a rewarding one,” adviser Deirdre Filippi said. “In addition to learning some new skills, the students really came away with a sense of accomplishment while understanding how they can help to strengthen the greater community.”
