The Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that it will provide a venue for the 6th Annual Stand Up for the Homeless event, sponsored by the Office of the Suffolk County Executive, on Friday, June 21st in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the fifth year the event will be held at the College. The annual Stand Up for the Homeless event allows individuals in attendance to gain access to free services and products offered by a number of non-profit and government agencies, all in one location. Services that will be provided include health and dental screenings, housing and shelter placement, employment opportunities, free haircuts, a clothing drive and public assistance counseling. The blood pressure and health screenings that were provided at previous events

resulted in a handful of attendees receiving vital, immediate care they may have otherwise not received. “The mission and fundamental goal of the Suffolk County Department of Social Services is to assist each of our county’s most vulnerable residents with the tools and support they need to regain their selfsufficiency,” said Suffolk County Department of Social Services Acting Commissioner John F. O’Neill. “Stand Up for the Homeless personifies that mission, and we are proud to stand beside County Executive Bellone, St. Joseph’s College and our non-profit partners in presenting it.” Long Island Cares and Island Harvest will provide attendees with bags of food to leave with. An additional food drive will be coordinated by The Patchogue Lions Club,

while St. Vincent de Paul will coordinate a clothing drive. Free transportation to and from the event will be supplied throughout the day at 10 different locations around the county. Last year, more than 250 volunteers came out to assist at the event and more than 75 organizations offered free services to over 500 individuals and families. Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

Celebrating Survivorship Nearly 300 cancer survivors, their families, friends and the doctors, nurses and other professionals who cared for them at Stony Brook University Cancer Center celebrated Stony Brook’s 9th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) on June 9th. Ethan Zohn, Survivor: Africa TV show winner, former professional soccer player, and a two-time cancer survivor, brought a message of perseverance to cancer patients. “Cancer changed me, and I know it has changed you, and in the long-run that can be for the better,” said Zohn to fellow cancer survivors. “Living with cancer is part of your long-term survival. Remember that living with and beating your disease makes you a true winner and survivor in life, which is not a game or a show.” Zohn said he lost 32 pounds in 39 days in Survivor: Africa, but it is nothing compared to the survivor battle he is fighting against Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He has had two stem cell transplants and has been in remission for 15 months. “This is an important day for our patients, the doctors and staff at Stony Brook who work so hard to help cure them, and the entire community in our ongoing fight against cancer,” said Yusuf A. Hannun, MD, Director, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “The era of genomic medicine that we are now in is creating a kind of silent revolution in cancer medicine, in which new targeted therapies are increasing remission rates and minimizing adverse effects. Through collaborative research and clinical trials, Stony Brook Cancer Center specialists are developing new treatment approaches to help their patients and advance cancer medicine.” Central to expanding cancer research at Stony Brook is Stony Brook Medicine’s plan to build a state-of-theart translational medical research building (MART) that will focus on cancer research, advanced imaging, and a

new cancer center. Projected to break ground in early 2014, the 250,000-square-foot-facility would be located on the Stony Brook Medicine campus where scientists and physicians would work side by side to research and discover new treatments and technology. The MART’s cancer care will triple Stony Brook’s capacity for outpatient services and enhance all cancer care for Long Island and beyond. According to the American Cancer Society, cancer survivorship continues to increase but cancer remains

the second most common cause of death in the United States and 1.6 million new cases are projected to occur in the U.S. this year. Stories of hope, however, from all age groups were reflected during the celebration at Stony Brook. Samantha Fried, of Islandia, a 37-year-old breast cancer survivor and the Stony Brook patient speaker, relayed how she was shocked by her diagnosis at age 35. After undergoing a double mastectomy, she received additional treatment at Stony Brook. She persevered. While undergoing treatment she attended Stony Brook University School of Nursing. Fried completed the program, received her RN degree, and recently passed

This year’s challenge was Senior Solutions, in which teams partnered with senior citizens, who told them about the everyday challenges they face. Teams then created solutions as to how these setbacks could be improved. Upon completion, teams shared their solutions with their senior teammates.

Joshua Sackstein, 23, of Fort Salonga, and a survivor of childhood leukemia, came to the event because he thought it would be moving to see and talk to other survivors at one setting. Attending the celebration, he said, helps him to continue valuing life at a young age and is inspiring him to find a way to give back and help others going through treatment. “This day makes me thank God, all of my doctors and caregivers at Stony Brook, and really everyone who has joined this fight against cancer,” said Roy Romard, of Sayville. The 56-year-old lymphoma survivor was treated at Stony Brook from the time he was diagnosed in 2007. He recently passed the five-year mark of being cancer free. As a prelude to his celebrity guest appearance and message of perseverance at Stony Brook’s NCSD celebration, Zohn took his message personally to cancer patients in Stony Brook University Hospital on June 8th. “I know it stinks to be in the hospital,” he told a group of pediatric patients gathered in the playroom at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. “You’ve got to have trust in all these guys at the hospital, because they’re going to do all they can to make you healthy.” “It was cool,” said five-year-old George Cochoy of Zohn’s visit. Cochoy and other children engaged Zohn in a rousing game of “Zingo!” in the playroom before each received an autographed neckerchief and photo of Zohn. He also distributed “headbands of hope” from an organization that supports the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which funds research for childhood cancer. NCSD is an annual, worldwide celebration each June when hundreds of communities partake in a symbolic event to celebrate survivorship and life. this year. Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming. Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year. Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp. Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public. professor at Stony Brook University and Simons Center for Physics and Geometry. “I am convinced that educating kids fully and thoroughly in a real scientific research environment is essential to their overall development and future growth.” Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years. Sigma Camp offers indepth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects. In the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others. Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our picturesque campus offering swimming and outdoor sports. Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University. This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years. This is Sigma Camp’s second year in existence. The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. At the June 4th meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Rob Calarco honored the first, second and third place winners in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s annual Bridge Building Contest – all of whom hail from Patchogue-Medford High School. This is the second consecutive year Pat-Med

students have swept the top three spots. Brianna Shortell took first place with a bridge that weighed 20.7 grams and held 89.18 pounds, 1954.17 times its own weight. Michael Grazio placed second with a bridge that weighed 21.01 grams and held 89.83 pounds, 1939.37 times its weight, and third place went to Justin Schulz,

whose bridge weighed 14.59 grams and held 60.78 pounds, 1889.61 times its weight. Also on hand was Mr. Richard Yngstrom, the physics teacher at the high school who supervises the students in preparation for the bridge building contest.

On May 31st, Assemblyman Edward Hennessey presented a New York State Assembly Citation and individual Certificates of Merit to Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students at the Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport who were first prize

winners in the third annual Mutt-i-grees® “America Adopts” Public Service Announcement (PSA) Contest. A $2,500 check was presented at a recent surprise visit from the Publishers Clearing House prize patrol, Scooby-Doo, and the Mutt-i-grees®

The program provides hospitals with a web-based patient management tool, best practice discharge protocols and standing orders, along with a robust registry and real-time benchmarking capabilities to track performance. The quick and efficient use of guideline procedures can improve the quality of care for stroke patients and may reduce disability and save lives. “Recent studies show that patients treated in hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® -Stroke program receive a higher quality of care and may experience better outcomes,” said Lee H. Schwamm, M.D., chair of the Get With The Guidelines National Steering Committee and director of the TeleStroke and Acute Stroke Services

at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA. “Southside Hospital’s stroke team is to be commended for their commitment to improving the care of their patients.” Following Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke treatment guidelines, patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies including the use of medications such as tPA, antithrombotics and anticoagulation therapy, along with cholesterol reducing drugs and smoking cessation counseling. These are all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients. The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Over the past 64 years, the Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections program has raised $29,000,000 for Dana-Farber. Friday, June 7th kicks off the 64th year of The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program. Movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours will head to local theatres to help benefit adult and pediatric cancer research and care at DanaFarber Cancer Institute. Since 1949, volunteers have been passing collection canisters after the showing of a movie “trailer” about the Jimmy Fund at participating movie theaters. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays (evenings only), and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (days and evenings) from June 7th to July 25th at participating National Amusements movie theaters in several states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington.

Escallier was honored for her nationally grantfunded evidence-based scholarship on nursing education, delivery models and organizational outcomes, according to the NSHC. She received the prestigious award at the NHSC’s annual Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony on May 23 at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, NY. Each of the NHSC’s member hospitals nominated a nurse for the annual awards, and the Deans of area nursing schools submitted nominees for nursing excellence in education. Escallier has been a Principal Investigator on federally funded nursing research on retention strategies in diverse workforces. She has presented her evidencebased scholarly research at local, national and international conferences and been published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals. She has presented nationally and internationally on the process of creating and maintaining diverse workforces, and on evaluation and outcome methodologies. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School’s third through fifth graders utilized their mathematical and geographic skills as they participated in a treasure hunt activity during their physical education classes. The program, which was purchased through a donation from the school’s PTA, required the students

to work together in teams to find buried “gold” while using a 12-foot piece of rope and a set of “treasure map” instructions. The Mystery Class endeavor that leads students through a series of steps to acquire and analyze information in order to make informed decisions. Debbie Gerken, a BOCES technology integration specialist, facilitated the project in collaboration with classroom teachers Gabrielle Donovan and Shannon Picinich. Students used Internetand technology-based resources such as Excel and Google Earth in a quest to locate the hidden classes.

At the close of the project, students were given a list of newly acquired vocabulary words and asked to write a narrative using the story starter “On the day the Earth stood still….” The changing face of today’s classroom fosters collaboration and analysis that uses realworld data. This project is interdisciplinary in nature, covering science, math, social studies and English language arts.

Bayport-Blue Point High School’s boys track team walked away victorious at this year’s New York State Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Middletown High School, with John Antonacci, Jack Flood, Jared Gray, Bailey Imbo and Harry Martin named state champions as well as All-State athletes. Teammates, Chris Stelling and Adam LaFemina were also honored with the title of All-State athlete, based on their performances in the 4x800 meter relay. To earn the title of AllState athlete, an athlete or relay team must finish in the top six in their class for a particular event. There are two classes in track and field: Division 1 (large school) and Division II (small school). “Once again our track program continues to show why we are one of the most coveted programs within the State of New York,” said Timothy Mullins, the district’s director of physical education, health

and interscholastic sports. Gray, who earlier in the year broke the school record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.1 seconds, earned his AllState honors in the 200-meter dash. Competing in all five pentathlon events (110-meter high hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump, and the 1,500-meter run) in one day, Flood set a new school record of 3,510 points, earning him a state championship title and the honor of being the New York State Federation pentathlon champion. The federation includes all public high schools (small and large), Catholic schools, private schools and city schools. With a time of 3:20.93, the 4x400 meter relay team of Antonacci, Gray, Imbo and Martin defended their 2012 Division II championship and once again earned the distinction of being named state champions. Rally For The Future Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., along with district teachers and parents, joined thousands of NY state teachers and supporters for an important rally at the state capital in Albany, NY, on June 8th. This One Voice United – Fighting for the future of Public Education rally brought together educators and like-minded supporters to rally against over-testing, and the underfunding, in public education. Outreach Programs Breast Cancer Help, Inc. former President Lorraine Pace presented $2,000 scholarships to West Babylon High School senior Kimone Beaumont and Bay Shore High School senior Cassandra Crooks. The annual scholarships are awarded to students whose lives have been touched by a cancer diagnosis. After supporting a family member through cancer, both students plan to pursue careers in health care to be able to care for others. Ms. Beaumont plans to attend

Farmingdale University to study nursing while Ms. Crooks will study pre-med at Suffolk Community College. Breast Cancer Help, Inc., created the Long Island Cancer Help and Wellness Center at 32 Park Avenue in Bay Shore to provide non-medical support for those dealing with cancer. Through a series of free services including exercise classes, art therapy, and massage, the Center provides cancer survivors with support to overcome the challenges of a cancer

diagnosis. Earlier this year, The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation aligned with Breast Cancer Help, Inc. to provide outreach, education and programs for cancer survivors on Long Island.

Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
