n October 2013, more than 125 students from the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Sayville Academic Center and their parents were challenged with a reading assignment through the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) Program. The task was to read every night until May 2014. The goal was to log 125,000 minutes. They took the challenge and exceeded everyone’s expectations. They logged more than 125,000 minutes! provide a welcome change in the resident’s routine, allowing them to become more active and responsive when these wonderful dogs, and their volunteers, visit with them. Ms. Conrad said that “My kindergarten class and I were honored to welcome Therapy dogs from Therapy Dogs International (TDI) and the Delta Society, together with their handlers. Their visit coincided with a three week unit that took place in our classroom in the month of March.” She continued, “During this three week unit, kindergarten students are introduced to the world of dogs. During the first week, we discuss the care and responsibilities that come with owning a dog. We talk about daily responsibilities, veterinary care, leash laws, licensing requirements, training, etc. During the second week, we discuss ways in which we can be safe around dogs. Some of the topics discussed involve how to properly greet a dog, what to do if a loose dog approaches you, how we can read a dog’s body language.” Finally in the third week, students learn about the types of jobs that dogs have held throughout history and even in today’s world. They learn about police dogs, detection dogs, assistance dogs, guide dogs and, of course, therapy dogs! During the course of this unit of study, the children are asked to bring in a picture of a dog. This could be their own dog or simply a picture of a dog they find interesting. The children write about their dog pictures and their work is displayed in the atrium for all to enjoy. It is interesting to see how many people from all over the building are drawn to come and have a look at these writing projects! “The gracious volunteers from TDI and the Delta Society assist

us in reviewing the above lessons. We set up four centers in the classroom so that small groups of children are provided with a hands-on opportunity to interact with the dogs in a way that reinforces the lessons they have learned during our unit.” Ms. Conrad hopes that the children will come away with a deeper appreciation for dogs (and for animals in general) and learn how to be responsible citizens when it comes to the care

Tripping Down Memory Lane By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended my old dance studio’s annual recital, where I had the opportunity to watch the entire show from the comfort of the audience for only the second year, after 20 years of “gracing” the stage myself. I use that term lightly, as there were quite a number of cringeworthy moments during those two decades of dance. How could there not be? There was the time I froze midway through a number, right as I was dead center, absolutely perplexed as to what the next step might be. Dozens of others twirled and leapt around me, as I stood there, horrified. Talk about the world seeming to move in slow motion around you. All in all, it was probably a five-second pause; but it sure seemed like an eternity until the choreography (thankfully) kicked back in.

Then there was the year I was selected to sit atop another dancer’s shoulders, while he carried me clear across the stage. Oh, and did I mention we were dressed in circus attire? The fact was, we had rehearsed the lift and the dynamics associated with balancing in such a precarious position for weeks on end. However, we had failed to account for the silky, slippery material the costumes would be made of. You can imagine the rest. I believe there exists a photo of the scene, with me desperately clinging onto the “ringmaster’s” hat for dear life with a huge, frozen, petrified grin, silently willing the stage to shrink so that we could make it into the wings immediately. Ah, memories… And then there was the ultimate classic. My first year, six years old. Unfamiliar with the protocol of lining up before

my number, how much time to allow, etc., my mother and I found ourselves in the dressing room as the first few notes of “Somewhere Out There” filtered through the doorway. My song! I’ll leave you with this image: A dozen or so girls tiptoeing in their tutus to the music when, out of nowhere, comes another tiny ballerina, arms flailing, ﬂying across the stage to take her position among the class. Yup. I always did know how to make an entrance. After 20 years, I took my final curtain call. But the desire to dance remains; the amazing feeling you get from being on stage – one that you would only know if you have had the privilege of being there – still lingers on, even as I watched the next generation of dancers take their turns in the spotlight. May they have as many fond memories as I do (and a few bloopers too!).

With every passing day, I become more aware of my surroundings. I try to pick up on the fleeting aspects of life. From the beginning of my high school career, people told me that the four years would be gone before I knew it. They made sure that I was aware that high school is the best time of one’s life. From the first moment I walked into St. John’s, I knew that it would be a place with the power to shape my life. My mannerisms, persona, outlook and mentality have all been influenced by SJB. Each year, on Alumni Career Day, I would

stare in awe at the past graduates, and commend their accomplishments. Now, as a graduate, I am following in their footsteps and going out into the world. Some of my peers will go on to do big things. While I was sitting in that auditorium of 397 other teens, I couldn’t help but to speculate on which kid would become the author. Who would become the politician? Undoubtably, there are movers and shakers within my graduating class. I can only hope that I am one of them. There is no telling what the members of my class will do with their

lives. As I stood beside them on that morning when we moved our tassels, it became clear that we were in this journey together. I am moving on to Villanova, and we were parting ways. However, I feel as though I will be crossing paths with many of my classmates in the future. As an official St. John’s Alumni, I have joined the ranks of those who presented on Career Day. One day, many years from now, I hope to stand alongside my classmates yet again, bragging about my accomplishments, and hearing what my friends have done with their lives.

Costello’s Ace Hardware It all began back in 1976. Our country was going through a terrible recession. Our local economy was devastated. At this time, founder Vincent Costello was forced to close his air conditioning and heating contracting business. Looking for a means to support his wife and 10 children, Vinnie stumbled upon a business opportunity, a retail hardware store. Originally opened 1973, it was a small, neglected, under-stocked store of barely over 2,000 square feet located in Deer Park. With no previous retail experience and no other options, Vinnie courageously embarked on a journey that few would ever have dared. Sales were dismal and the store was in desperate need of attention. He worked every day for 5 years and managed to make the store profitable. While most would have been satisfied with this miraculous feat, Vinnie was determined to grow beyond that one small store. By refinancing his home, he opened a second location in 1982. This 5,000 square foot industrial store was also located in Deer Park, on the other side of town.

In 1988, another opportunity arose. A shopping center was being constructed in the little-known town of Nesconset. It wasn’t the most populated area, but Vinnie had lived there for over ten years and he thought that the residents of Nesconset would respond well to a neighborhood hardware store. Did they ever! The 4,000 square foot store was an instant success, managing to be profitable from the day it opened. Over the next four years, the success of that store helped fuel the expansion of the company to larger stores in Farmingdale and Central Islip. During those early growing years, his children worked in the business and contributed to its success. Their dad taught them the importance of taking care of the customers. “Treat them like family,” he would say. He taught them how to solve their problems and how to learn from them. Most importantly, he taught them that the most sacred bond between them and their customers is trust. In 2001, with Vinnie’s encouragement and guidance, six of his children opened a 25,000 square foot store

in Bellmore. This store was the size of all of the other locations combined - it was huge! It seemed impossible to find enough products to fill it. It took some time, but eventually they had a successful home center. This hardware/home center concept has continued over the past nine years in Massapequa Park, Farmingdale, Bethpage, New Hyde Park, Island Park, Centereach, West Islip, North Massapequa, Northport, West Babylon, Garden City Park, Smithtown, East Islip, Rocky Point, Great Neck and Copiague. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

Anthony Felicio, Jr., President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA), announced today the ratification of a longterm contract between his organization and the Connetquot Central School District of Islip. Felicio explained that, “This was the second year without a contract, but we are pleased with the outcome of the negotiation process. Our members recently ratified the contract overwhelmingly.” He went on to say, “Recognizing the district’s budgetary constraints due to the 2% tax cap, and with many residents still recovering from the ‘Great Recession,’ this agreement is fair to both sides, and benefits the community and our members.” Specifics of the agreement included in the contract running retroactively from 2012

College Commitments

On Thursday, April 10th, Connetquot High School Assistant Principal Mr. Mark Sidman, and Football Coach Michael Hansen, announced the college commitment of 6 senior student-athletes. Hansen, whose ‘Thunderbirds’ reached the Suffolk County Division-I semi-final game against local rival Sachem North, finished the season with an impressive 8-2 record. Hansen credits his seniors with the leadership skills that took the team so far. The following seniors have made commitments for the Fall of 2014: Marcus Gutierrez will attend Hamilton College (Clinton, NY). Guiterrez is a 3-year varsity player and 2013 team captain. He was a nominee for both the Joe Cipp (Best Running Back in Suffolk County), and Hansen (Best Player in Suffolk County) Awards. Marcus was also a finalist for the LaBue Award, as the Best Football Scholar-

Athlete in Suffolk County. Guitierrez was selected 2nd team All-Long Island. He also participates in Spring Track. Mike Grimaldi has committed to Mt. Union College (OH) for the upcoming school year. Grimaldi, another team captain, was a versatile member of the team playing starting Safety, Quarterback and Wide Receiver. Despite an early season injury, Grimaldi showed tremendous resiliency and returned by week 7 to start at Safety, and complete the season. Mike Ansaldi will attend SUNY Cortland in the Fall. He was a Wide Receiver and Outside Linebacker for 3 varsity seasons. Ansaldi was selected All-Division; he was also an All-League selection for Coach Drzal’s basketball team. Chris Beal will attend SUNY Maritime. Chris played Inside Linebacker and Fullback and was one of the team’s leading

tacklers. Beal was one of the team’s defensive leaders. Chris was an AllDivision selection this season; he is also an AllCounty wrestler. Carlton Woodie has committed to Utica College (NY). Carlton played Wide Receiver and Cornerback this season was considered one of the leading offensive players this season. Woodie is also a member of Connetquot’s Track team. James Oliver will attend Springfield College (MA) in the Fall. James was a mainstay on the offensive and defensive line. This 3-year varsity studentathlete was also selected as a team captain. Oliver was an All-Division selection this season. Coach Hansen said that “These young men have been a great source of pride for the coaches, and their families. They will be missed, but we are confident in their success as they move on to the next level.”

Family Fun Night

Helen B. Duffield Elementary School PTA hosted it’s annual Family Fun Night on Thursday evening, March 20th. Duffield Principal Mrs. Lisa Farrell was on hand to welcome students, faculty and community members for a night of awards, history and just plain fun. Reading Fair posters were on display in the cafeteria with the winning students having been recognized, and presented with certificates. Also in attendance was Mr. Dale Spencer, Curator of the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society. Spencer talked with parents and students about the history

of the community, and listened as a few adults recalled traveling from Brooklyn and Queens back in their youth, to the ‘country’, and the beauty of Lake Ronkonkoma. The Historical Society also took part in Duffield’s Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program this year. From the cafeteria, parents and students headed towards the school gym where the audience was ‘rocking’ to the sounds of upbeat music, and the bright lights of the ‘Brain Challenge – TV Game Show’ format. Al, the colorful emcee, would be distributing raffle tickets to students and parents

which would be redeemed at the end of the night for a variety of prizes. In between quiz show competition, Al would challenge the students to show him certain things, along the lines of Let’s Make A Deal. For example, parents were offered raffle tickets if they could carry three of their children up front; carry a spouse, show a chapstick or sunglasses! It was a fun night with plenty of noise and energy. Mrs. Farrell thanked the members of the PTA for organizing such a fun night, and look forward to the 2015 edition of Duffield’s Family Fun Night!

Field Day Fun Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School students recently enjoyed the fun Field Day. Teams of students competed against each other in spirited activities

including relay races, obstacle courses, sack races, softball tosses, tire rolling, and tug-ofwar. Parents, members of the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School PTA, and teachers all showed

great support towards the students. Healthy snacks and drinks were provided by the PTA for the students as they relaxed in between their favorite games and competitions.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School recently hosted ventriloquist and magician Bob Conrad who put on a performance to help explain the importance of safety to students in “… we throw a crisis …” at them to see how they handle the situation. Students were assigned to one of seven standing committees. The April 5th conference began at 8 a.m. with registration and concluded with closing ceremonies at 9 p.m. Ms. Bay said that, “I cannot properly express in words how proud I am of my Model UN-ers! The hard work and dedication that they have shown throughout the year is awe-inspiring. The work they do to tackle current events and world issues is inspirational. I am honored to work with all of them.” The Model United Nations allows students to step into the shoes of Ambassadors representing

their nations at the UN in Manhattan. Students debate current issues, prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries. Students from the following high schools took part in the April 5th Model UN Conference at Connetquot High School: Connetquot, Patchogue-Medford, Plainview-Old Bethpage, St. Francis Prep, Malverne, Bay Shore, Bellport, Sayville, Hicksville, Port Washington, Commack and Eastport-South Manor. On Saturday morning, April 5th, over 180 high school students met at Connetquot High School in Bohemia, for the annual Model UN Conference! Hosted by Connetquot’s Model UN Club, advisor Ms. Jennifer Bay, and principal Mr. Gregory Murtha, students representing 13 high schools assumed the role of national ‘Ambassadors’! According to Ms. Bay, “Students simulate what goes on at the United Nations. They are each assigned to represent a sovereign nation, placed into a committee to discuss important topics and concerns, and make recommendations.” To keep the student/delegates on their toes, sometimes

FARMERS FOR A DAY - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School’s second grade students recently took a field trip to Benner’s Farm in Setauket, New York to learn about life on a farm. Four classes of second grade students traveled to the farm where they learned about farm mammals, gardens and seeds, and plants and flowers. The students held baby bunnies and chicks and bottle-fed lambs, goats, and piglets. more than 125,000 minutes! Utilizing Arts-inEducation funding, hot air balloon Pilot Lee Teitsworth from the Liberty Balloon Company was contacted and trailered a hot air balloon to the school. Due to weather and safety conditions, the balloon could not be inflated but Lee came with an alternate plan. Lee brought the deflated hot air balloon into the school’s gymnasium and partially inflated it with floor fans. After a brief presentation about the history of ballooning, the mechanics of ballooning, and a description on how the hot air balloon equipment works, all 125 students got the opportunity to go

inside the balloon. What’s more fun than having an assembly inside a balloon? Going outside and seeing and hearing a hot air balloon burner blast. Principal Michele Carpenter said, “The hot air balloon could not be inflated because of the wind, but it was an even better experience because all the students got the opportunity to go inside the balloon. This initiative celebrates the Parents as Reading Partners and it is our seventh year getting the Suffolk County Reading Council Award for our reading initiatives and challenges. We are very proud of our students and their successes.”

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL HONORED - Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary was recently named top fundraising school in Suffolk County by The American Heart Association (AHA). The School was awarded both a plaque and a $500 dollar check from Friendly’s Restaurant, a partner of AHA, as appreciation for such unprecedented donations. Cherokee Street Elementary school raised over $24,000 this past year and $150,000 since they began working with AHA.

Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School (CHS) recently announced the names of 17 students who have been selected by New York State to receive ‘Scholarships for Academic Excellence’ for their outstanding academic achievements and excellence. These students are also the top 17, as determined by rank, in CHS’s graduating class

of 2014. The students were recognized for their display of strong academic and social excellence throughout high school. CHS Principal Gregory Murtha along with each of their counselors congratulated the students on their achievements.
