Productive Ways To Spend The Summer After Graduation Graduation is a momentous day in the lives of college students. After years of schooling that dates all the way back to preschool or kindergarten, newly minted college graduates are finally ready to begin their professional lives.

• Network. Students who interned can get in touch with their past supervisors or mentors and find out if the company is hiring. Such people may be more inclined to bring someone with direct experience onboard — even if that experience was brief and unpaid. In addition, grads can connect with adjunct professors who work in their desired fields.

That can be a scary prospect for some students, especially those who graduate without jobs lined up. The summer after graduating from college can be a time like no other in the lives of new graduates. It can be easy to grow dejected as weeks or months go by without receiving a job offer, but spending the summer after graduation as productively as possible can help graduates overcome any dejection they might feel and increase their chances of landing a job.

• When job hunting, don’t get pigeon-holed by your major. Just because a student graduates with a particular degree does not mean he or she needs to look for work in that field. In fact, many companies may prefer entry-level applicants with degrees that are not specific to their industries so their new hires are blank slates who can be easily trained.

• Contact career services offices at your alma mater. Career services offices can help recent graduates as they look for their first jobs out of college. Such offices may have access to job and internship opportunities that grads do not. In addition, they may coach grads on interviewing techniques and on ways to stand out in crowded job markets.

• Customize a résumé for every job. Be sure the curriculum vitae is not static. Write and refine résumés for each job you apply for, mildly tweaking the wording or accomplishments to address the key phrases used in the job listing. It can be tempting for recent college grads to spend the summers after graduation relaxing, but those who spend that time productively may land jobs more quickly than those who do not.

• Seek internships. If part - or full-time employment is proving elusive, don’t be afraid to seek and ultimately accept internships, which can provide a way for grads to get their foot in the doors in certain industries. Summer internships may already be filled, so scour job boards for fall or winter internships.

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Choosing a college major is an important decision that many students delay making until their sophomore or even junior years. Only after taking a few courses and uncovering one’s interests do some college students figure out what they want to do with their lives. Each student is different, and while some may pursue a degree based on a particular passion, others may choose majors that can lead to high-paying jobs. While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lowerpaying specialties like education and social sciences, but in recent years a shift has

occurred, and more women have begun to choose majors associated with higher post-graduate salaries. Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than men in the first five years of their career. They’ve identified several majors where female college graduates can earn as much or more than their male counterparts and find successful careers.

Science Through Screens Fifth graders from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in Bayport were recently treated to an exciting virtual assembly led by Ranger Eric from Center for Environmental Education and Discovery. In lieu of his annual visit to the school, the

wildlife biologist joined the students on Google Meet to teach them all about rainforests and the creatures that inhabit them. Much to the delight of the students, he even showed them some real exotic animals and insects. The eager students were able to ask Ranger

Eric questions via the website’s “chat” feature, making it an enriching interactive experience. This presentation truly brought to life the grade’s unit of study on rainforests and provided a wonderful addition to their distancelearning curriculum.

Grundy Avenue Elementary School Welcomes New Principal

The Sachem Central School District is proud to announce the recent appointment of Thomas Lipani Jr. as the new principal of Grundy Avenue Elementary School, effective July 1, replacing Laura Amato, who will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Lipani currently serves as the assistant principal of Sawmill Intermediate School in the Commack School District, where he has held the position for the past year. During his time in Commack, he chaired the In-School Support Team with the goal of evaluating academic performance and social relationships to identify struggling students and provide additional student support. Additionally, Mr. Lipani led biweekly curriculum discussions, chaired committees to determine necessary accommodations for students with academic

Prior to his time at Sawmill Intermediate School, Mr. Lipani was an elementary classroom teacher in the Sachem Central School District for 15 years, a principal’s aide for three years and the assistant supervisor for the Sachem Extended School

Year Program for two years. “I consider myself both blessed and humbled to be given the responsibility of serving the Sachem family as principal of Grundy Avenue Elementary School,” Mr. Lipani said. “As a Sachem graduate and a classroom teacher at Wenonah Elementary School for 15 years, I understand what a fantastic and hardworking community this is. I will do my best to continue the great traditions built at Grundy and work collaboratively with staff and families to provide the highest quality, student-centered education that is focused on the whole child.” Mr. Lipani holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and special education from Dowling College, a Master of Arts degree from Stony Brook University and an advanced certificate in educational leadership from LIU Post.

To keep spring school traditions alive, the pros at Tecumseh Elementary held a Virtual Field Day for students. Activities were designed for indoors or outdoors using common household items. Teachers

held Zoom sessions so participants could enjoy activities as a school community. There was the Coin Flip 400-Meter Dash, the Towel Flip Challenge, and the Mini Scavenger Hunt where students had

to quickly find objects that started with certain letters. Tecumseh Elementary School is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides services to students with special education needs.

Two COVID-19 Clinical Trials Offer Patients Hope Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory

Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or life-threatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement.

People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health

Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cuttingedge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptomfree and fully recovered. In addition to being in good health, donors must also be at least 18 years

of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. The plasma can be administered only to a consenting COVID-19 patient or a patient whose family member offers consent. The treatment will be given to those patients judged by a physician to be at high risk of disease progression to severe or life-threatening. The treatment regimen using remdesivir takes place over 10 days and includes a 200-milligram dose on the first day and a 100-milligram dose on days 2 to 10.
