I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. While many national and daily chains have resorted to using wire services to supplement their content, community publications remain entrenched in those neighborhoods they serve. Case in point: South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers
currently consists of 23 separate editions, circulating to at least double the number of individual neighborhoods, taking in dozens of school districts, libraries, local sports organizations, clubs, religious institutions, and on and on. We accept submissions directly from these groups, as well as any readers who may have something newsworthy to submit. How many publications can boast that? The point is, not many, leading to a flourishing community weekly that caters to its audience. Imagine that. Growing up, South Bay was always the publication you waited to receive in the mail each week, anxious to flip through the pages to read the latest highlights from your neighborhood, scan through
the wedding and birth announcements, academic and athletic accomplishments and more. How exciting it was to actually know some of these people who were featured – and occasionally, if you were lucky, to see your own name in print. Many clippings in my scrapbook are from none other than the old South Bay. How fulfilling to know that, over 60 years after its initial founding, our publication is still providing the same service to the community, to individuals within each neighborhood we reach. You simply can’t replace that sort of personalized touch. So, to all those weeklies out there – keep cranking. Your influence is being widely felt across the nation, one community at a time.

Reliving Childhood Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School Principal, Ms. Susan B. White, recently welcomed ‘Grandfriends’ from the local Arbors Assisted Living home to speak with students about toys and games from their childhood.
The visit, set up by Youth and Family Sevices Coordinator Donna Leopardi, was part of a Future Corps Community Service Project to make connections between senior citizens and students. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade
interacted with senior citizens at stations throughout the school atrium playing fun games and sharing memories of toys from past generations, such as hula hoops, paper dolls, Lincoln Logs and toy soldiers.
Teddy Bear Clinic Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School kindergarten students recently invited representatives from the Trauma Center at Stony Brook University Children’s Hospital to lead an interactive lesson about first aid and the importance of being safety conscious to prevent injury.
As part of the workshop, each student brought in a stuffed animal so students could act as doctors and learn first-hand about safely treating scrapes and cuts. Students used bandages, gauze pads and tongue depressors on their stuffed-animal patients to treat their imagined injuries. In addition, students
learned about seat belt safety and the importance of using helmets to protect themselves while riding bicycles. The event was one of the many ongoing programs the Connetquot School District facilitates throughout the school year to promote a safe and healthy lifestyle.

Celebrating Shakespeare
Connetquot High School recently hosted a festival celebrating William Shakespeare’s 452nd birthday. The festival featured food, games and several performances of classic Shakespeare plays. More than 100 students performed in the festival,
acclaimed playwright. Throughout the day, students performed selected scenes from Romeo and Juliet, As You Like It Macbeth, as well as other plays. In addition, students wore Elizabethanera costumes and enjoyed foods from the days of Shakespeare.

about the writing process and get their autographs. The purpose of this special night was to celebrate the joy of reading, encourage youngsters to read more, and perhaps consider becoming the authors of their own books. Many of the visiting students were fascinated as they talked to professional authors & illustrators, when they learned that their interest in reading began as grade school students.

Prom Dress Drive The Town of Islip Youth Bureau’s prom dress collection has been an outstanding success, and dresses are now available for local students in need. The Youth Bureau coordinated with their counterparts in
Brookhaven to organize the collection of over 250 dresses. The entire boutique of dresses is located at 401 Main Street (Town Hall West). “It’s our hope that this wonderful program gives

Special Education teachers at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Brookhaven Learning Center (BLC) at Samoset Middle School were certified by Tim Flynn of Special Olympics New York, Long Island Region, to be Special Olympic coaches for an event held at their school. The goal of Special Olympics is to build and create sports programs for special needs individuals. ESBOCES Assistant Principal Susan Gargan said, “We are completely on board with the Special Olympics Program. We have curriculum and
lesson plans in place.” The plans have been developed to provide for the widest range of abilities, giving all athletes a level playing field, and a reasonable chance to win. Flynn said, “BLC has one of our strongest school programs. We have a good relationship with them. They support and have enthusiasm for Special Olympics.” At the Special Olympics event recently held at BLC at Samoset, students competed in track and field events such as softball and turbo javelin throws, 50 and 100-meter running races and wheelchair races.
High school students from other ESBOCES programs volunteered their time to assist corporate volunteers from M&T Bank and Kohl’s to measure and record distances. Trophies were provided by Special Olympics. Scott, a relations manager at M&T Bank, said, “Employees commit to volunteering a few times a year. We sign up to help out in the community and it’s a team-building experience for our employees. Personally, it really makes me feel good to be here.”
