Hoops 4 Troops Connetquot High School students, staff and faculty recently came together for an evening of fun physical activity during the Connetquot National Honor Society’s Hoops-4-Troops basketball tournament benefiting America’s soldiers. Between registration fees, T-shirt sales, refreshments and donations, the NHS raised more than $1,000,

alongside collecting donations of new clothing for the local chapter of the Blue Star Mothers and the General Needs for veterans group. Both organizations are dedicated to providing support to service members and their families. Connetquot NHS advisers Cheryl Sosa and Robert Bachisin extended their gratitude toward everyone that took part in this annual fundraiser.

These student-built products included virtual reality software that utilizes a cell phone app. This technology can be use by various manufacturers for numerous purposes, such as physical therapy and personal training. Also introduced were a small, electronics-free speaker that employs an acoustic design to amplify music played on a cell phone, and a dental flossing instrument that allows users to floss every tooth simultaneously, encouraging more regular flossing. Students developed, designed, built and tested their respective products in their engineering class. Of the three products presented, only Joseph

Economics Teacher Lindsay Schultz said, “This project required my students to utilize everything they learned this year, such as barrier to entry, opportunity cost, economic law, international trade laws, to name just a few things. Almost all of these students plan to study a STEM-related field in college and this exercise has helped them to realize that it takes more than just an innovative idea to bring a great product or service to market.”

Welcoming Wounded Warriors Wounded Warrior Project representatives Ben Mitchell and Matt Pennington recently visited with the fifth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School to talk about their unique sporting experience, and explain what keeps them motivated.

Both speakers spoke about their involvement with the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, an organization whose intent is to inspire and educate others while promoting the health and welfare of other wounded veterans. The team travels the country competing against other teams of athletes in exhibition games.

Afterward, the students asked questions. Fire Island Health Services Director and school nurse Janet LaViolette recently coordinated a dynamic and engaging event to promote learning about health and safety as well as Fire Island’s environment and history. The “Mermaid Ball,” as it was called, transformed the school gymnasium into an eclectic wonderland of learning and creativity for two days, attended first by students and staff of Woodhull School, and then opened to the public with a limited number of complimentary Ferry tickets provided by Fire Island Ferries. The event was very much a group effort both within and beyond the school. Woodhull staff members

led activities including “Yoga Under the Sea,” where Superintendent Loretta Ferraro taught students yoga poses; “Surf Shack Café,” where art teacher and librarian Bianca Hansen served smoothies and nori; “Captain’s Reading Room,” where reading specialist Colleen Ferry donned pirate attire and read to students, and an outdoor drum circle led by music teacher Philip Tamberino. The event also drew residents, parents and former students, including Dana DeRuvo-Hanner of Saltaire, who taught about safety at the “First Aid Station;” parent Blair Burke, who facilitated the popular “Dress Up” outlet featuring nautical costumes, and Fire Island

graduate Mallory Wood who taught about hygiene at the “Handwashing Station.” Representatives from other Fire Island organizations also participated, including the U.S. Coast Guard, whose members taught about water safety, and the National Parks Service, whose members taught about the natural resources and environmental concerns of Fire Island. This is not the first time nurse Janet has helped organize a schoolwide educational event. For many years her “Teddy Bear Clinics” filled a similar niche and last year’s “Space Station” foreshadowed the more expansive program this year.

Additionally, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School Speech pathologists Laurie Katz and Christine Monahan recently returned from Vietnam after being invited by Smile Train Organization. While there, they were able to get a glimpse of the Vietnamese culture, visit with the children who recently underwent the surgery and provide their families with small tokens of appreciation. The Smile Train Organization assists millions of children with untreated clefts by providing training, funding and resources to empower local doctors in more than 85 developing countries to provide 100 percent-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care in their own communities.

Students at BayportBlue Point School District’s Sylvan Avenue Elementary School recently celebrated Smile Train Week to recognize Better Speech and Hearing month as an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders. To raise school spirits and promote fundraising, the week’s themes consisted of Pajama Day, Sports Day, Career Day, Wear Your Best Smiles Day and Crazy Hair Day. The school is proud to have supported the efforts of the Smile Train and Better Speech and Hearing Month for the past 10 years. Due to their successful fundraising this year, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School raised $3,703 which was tripled by an unknown Smile Train donor, bringing the grand total raised to $11,109. With these funds collected, approximately 44 children

She has helped lead the T-Birds to three Suffolk County, two Long Island, and one New York State Championship during her outstanding four-year high

school career. Taylor has earned a 97 percent unweighted academic average, and ranks 17th in the 2017 Connetquot High School graduating class. Additionally, she is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the National French and Spanish Language honor societies. She was heavily recruited by several universities, but decided to accept the challenge of the Honors’ Program at Iona College.

Thirdthrough fifth-grade students at Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Academy Street Elementary School were recently joined by members of the community to celebrate the fifth annual “Friends of Carly Fun Run” in honor of former Academy student Carly LeStrange.

After being cheered on by kindergarten through second-grade students lining the front entrance of Academy Street Elementary, students, staff and their families joined one another to jog around the newly renovated Bayport-Blue Point High School track. Additionally, $1,046.16

Charting the Course Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco announced the panelists for the seventh legislative district’s “Charting the Course” (CTC), a free business summit and informational event he will host on Monday, June 19th at the Patchogue Theatre. CTC will bring together local businesses with key government agencies and others in an effort to support local economic development. The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome panel moderated by Calarco. Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri will serve as the keynote speaker.They will be joined by Jaime Bonnano, owner of Tap Room and Flight restaurants in Patchogue; Mark Burford, president of Blue Point Brewery; Campbell Dalglish, president of The Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center; and Robert J. Coughlan, principal of development company TriTec Inc. Each member of the welcome panel will discuss their experience being a part of the revitalization of Patchogue and respond to audience questions.

Following the welcome panel, topic-specific breakout sessions will be held across the street at the Patchogue-Medford Library. “Starting a Business” will be moderated by David Kennedy, executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, and will feature speakers Ritu Wackett, senior business advisor at the Stony Brook University Small Business Development Center, and Dawn Turnbull, vice president at Bridgehampton National Bank. “Greening Your Business”’ will be moderated by Lisa Broughton of the Suffolk County Department of Economic Development and Planning. Joining her to answer questions about business efficiency programs will be Alexander Douris from PSEG and a representative from National Grid. “Leveraging Public Dollars” will focus on utilizing public grants and programs to help fund improvements to your business. It will be moderated by Dennis Smith, executive director of the Patchogue Business

Improvement District. Panelists include Marian Russo, executive director of community development for the Village of Patchogue, and Theresa Ward, chair of the Suffolk County IDA. Lastly, “Developing Your Workforce” will focus on how to ensure that businesses have the qualified workers they need. The panel will be moderated by David Kennedy, executive director of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce. He will be joined by Ryan Stanton of the Long Island Federation of Labor and Felicia Fleitman, president of Saavy Hires, which focuses on creating internship programs for businesses of all sizes. Charting the Course is part of effort started by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory in 2016 to bring business and local government together. Students Practice Mindfulness Fifth-grade classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School recently welcomed former student and current mindful educator Erin McManus-Goeke as she shared strategies with them throughout a three-week program, demonstrating to the students what your

body can do when a person is mindful. The simple techniques offered in Mindful Education recognize the connection between classroom behavior, selfesteem and academic performance, while the training aids in stress management and develops increased empathy toward

others. The program seeks to help students develop stress-coping skills and improved self-esteem. Mrs. McManus-Goeke talked about her own challenges at school, both in the classroom and as an athlete. She spoke of how she went on to eventually excel in all areas.

Student Scholarships

The Long Island Horticultural Society awarded scholarships, in the amount of $1,000 each, to two outstanding students from Long Island who are both pursuing post-graduate education in horticulture. They are Giuseppina Mannino of Bohemia and John Virzi of Bayside. With a degree already from the Fashion Institute of Technology, it was not easy to make a total career change. Giuseppina’s lifelong passion for gardening drew her to the field of horticulture and her long-term goal is to become a landscape

architect. She is currently studying at Farmingdale State College’s Department of Urban Horticulture and Design program. Through letters of recommendation, her professors praised her enthusiasm and willingness to ask and learn. John works full time and is dedicated to attending school in the evenings. He commutes from Queens all the way out to Farmingdale State College to pursue his passion. With a long career in the field of engineering and six United States patents for his inventions, he is also looking towards a second

career. As an avid lifelong gardener with a love for public and botanical gardens, John was inspired to work toward becoming a garden curator. The LI Horticultural Society meets monthly at Planting Fields Arboretum and offers year-round educational programs, events and tours of gardens here and abroad. Membership is open to all LI gardeners whether they are professionals, enthusiastic amateurs, or just like to stop and smell the roses. Scholarship Winners Announced The not-for-profit Ballet Education and Scholarship Fund, Inc. (BESFI) recently announced the top winners of its annual scholarship competition held June 4th, 2017 in conjunction with the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop. The competition was judged by a panel of five distinguished adjudicators who awarded 16 scholarships totaling $5,000. Senior Division winners were by rank: tied for 1st with identical scores were Diana Atoian of Holbrook and Brianna Jimenez of East Setauket who were awarded $600.00 each with 3rd place going to Ava Aubé of Hampton Bays with an award of $425. Junior Division winners were led by Lara Caraiani of St. James with an award of $600 followed by Madison Valenta of Port Jefferson, 2nd, who garnered $500 and 3rd place was captured by Alana Samara of Port Jefferson who received a

$325.00 scholarship. According to BESFI President Dimitri Papadakos, “this year’s competition was difficult to judge due to the overall quality of the competitors. Both divisions were wellrepresented resulting in across-the-board scholarship recipients.” Celebrating its thirtyeighth anniversary, the BESFI Intensive Summer Workshop is a nationally recognized six week ballet program held annually during the last three weeks of July and three weeks in August. The three division program features Advanced, Advanced/Intermediate and Intermediate levels. Daily classes are given by renowned instructors drawn from diverse ballet companies such as the Hamburg Ballet of Germany, the Boston Ballet, Ballet West, the Atlanta Ballet and the Greek National Opera

Ballet. According to Valia Seiskaya, Artistic Director of BESFI, “BESFI provides a wide range of choices for dance students. For ages 8-11, the Intermediate Program is available in both two and three classes-per-day formats. Program attendance can be tailored from one to six weeks in duration with classes taken daily or on alternating days. The BESFI Advanced Intensive Summer Workshop now offers four classes per day which include several pas de dux classes each and every week. I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone.
