MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilman Thomas Hand today announced that Honor Flight Long Island is currently accepting World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran applications for a free flight with peers to Washington, D.C. to tour of military memorials. “Created to honor war veterans and thank them for their sacrifices, Honor Flights fly military veterans to our nation’s capital for a VIP tour which often includes the World War II Memorial, the Korean and Vietnam War memorials, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Honor Flight is an exceptional organization that provides and amazing service to our veterans, as these trips allow us to honor America’s veterans for their service and sacrifice, and for all they did to help preserve our freedom and democracy.” Long Island Honor

Flight, a nonprofit group, is part of the national Honor Flight network and organizes, hosts, and pays for the trips, which depart from Long Island MacArthur airport. Flights are scheduled in the spring and the fall, and as part of the day’s itinerary, veterans and ‘guardians’ (volunteers who help make these trips possible) fly in to Baltimore Washington International Airport, where a waiting motor coach takes them on the 50-minute drive to Washington DC and the WWII and Korean Memorials, a visit to Arlington National Cemetery, and visits to the Navy Memorial, the Air Force Memorial, or other area high-points. “This mission flies our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect together at our national memorials,” said Councilman Hand. “If you or any eligible veteran you know has interest in participating in an Honor Flight, I urge you to take on this wonderful and charitable opportunity.”

Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.

During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. In his closing remarks, Dr. Bossert thanked the valedictorians for giving school district administrators and parents a reason to be proud. “It’s the work you do that makes the work we do rewarding,” he told the students.

Accomplishments Acknowledged The Northport-East Northport School District recognized a number of exceptional students at the most recent Board of Education meeting on May 31st. Northport High School senior Shannon Culhane was named Art Student of the Month and was recognized for her outstanding work in the art department. During the past three years, Shannon has received multiple Scholastic Gold Key Awards, was named the 2018 Scholar Artist, and awarded Achievement in Drawing at Long Island’s Best: Young Artist Show. In addition, Shannon was also recently named a recipient of the Otto Kahn Visual Arts Scholarship. Her teachers commended her for her hard work and dedication to the arts, and her unwavering attention to honing her artistic

skills. Shannon will be continuing her artistic career at FIT as a Fashion Design major in the fall. Ryan Dee, a senior at Northport High School, was recognized as the 2018 Music Student of the Month. Throughout his academic career, Ryan has sought to understand music at a deeper level, and has received multiple awards for his skills in music theory, including Comprehensive Music Student of the Year and AP Music Theory Student of the Year. In addition, he has been recognized for the past two years as an AllState Symphony Orchestra member, and was selected as one of 11 winners of NYSSMA’s Electronic Music Showcase in 2016. He was commended by his instructors for his intuitive understanding of music, and the humility and integrity he regularly

shows in the classroom. Ryan will be continuing his studies at Syracuse University as a Music and Entertainment Industry major in the fall. In addition to these two outstanding students, a large group of accomplished students were recognized for recent accomplishments in the study of mathematics. Recognitions included those who received medals in the Long Island Math Fair, American Mathematics Competitions/American Invitational Mathematics Examination winners, Suffolk County Math Tournaments, and others. Students who showed exemplary skills in the studies of STEM and Visual Arts were recognized as well. More than 100 people, made up of family, friends, neighbors, fellow firefighters and elected officials on the state, town and local levels, gathered for the dedication and naming of Capt. Vincent Ungaro Way in Holbrook Sunday. Captain Ungaro, a member of the FDNY and 9/11 first responder, died of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in October 2016. The event also coincided with the 90th birthday of Captain Ungaro’s mother Susan. Islip Town Supervisor

Widow Dianne Ungaro along with her children, grandchildren, motherin-law Susan and family, accepted a replica of the sign that now hangs at the intersection.

The World of Wigs Hair industry specialists recently paid a visit to Sachem High School North and East in the Sachem Central School District as cosmetology students attended an informational presentation exploring the multidimensional world of wigs. Hair solution experts Nancy Kurfurst and Gail Sanderson from Wig Allure in Lake Grove delivered an eye-opening presentation

on the expansive background of the wig industry. Students learned about the numerous types of hair solutions available to those who have experienced medical or natural hair loss. Additionally, they were introduced to different wig materials, how to choose the best option for each particular customer and the extensive work that goes into the production of

a wig. “We measure our day in hugs,” Wig Allure owner Ms. Kurfurst said. “It is a moving experience to give someone back the thing that they lost.” As part of the cosmetology class unit on wigs, the presentation allowed students to ask industry leaders questions about their specific area of the hair profession.

Connetquot Celebrates The May 22nd Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the accomplishments of multiple individuals throughout the district, including students, retirees and those staff members receiving tenure. After a stunning performance from the Ronkonkoma Middle School General Music Guitar Ensemble with direction from Dr. Frank Saladino, the night’s recognitions were underway. Connetquot High School senior Alexis Falco was recognized for being an active member of Animal Conservation Club and Keep Islip Clean. In honor of such, she received the “Service to People in Need” award from the Town of Islip for her work with Relay For Life and the Animal Conservation Club fundraisers and was presented with a token of appreciation from the board of education for doing so. Connetquot High School senior Kayla Naldrett, also an active member of the Animal Conservation Club and Keep Islip Clean clubs, received the “Science”

award for her work in the clam program in which she helped raise 200,000 clams for seeding in the Long Island Sound and was recognized by the board for her accomplishments. Marina Duszak, the Connetquot High School senior who serves as president of student government, captain of the girls cross-country team and has raised money and awareness for both the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Relay for Life was chosen from 13,000 applicants to win a $20,000 scholarship from Foot Locker. The board of education presented Marina with a certificate for her accomplishments and thanked her for all of her efforts thus far. Sabah Bari and Nicholas Keddy, the Connetquot High School students who served as the Board of Education Student Government Representatives for the 2017-2018 school year, were recognized for their attendance and contributions to the community. Connetquot High School students Liza Aquilino, Sabah Bari, Matthew Downing and Vincent

Fasano were presented with tokens of appreciation for their social media presentation given at the Social Media Parent Forum held on May 2nd. Multiple district administrators, teachers and staff members who will be retiring from the district as of this school year were presented with a bouquet of flowers from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams and thanked for their cumulative years of service. The district congratulates Peter Harris, JoAnn Ianne, Dawn Jackson, John Lynch, Susan McNeil, Terry Mennona, Michelle Moretti, Patricia Nixon, David Pascarella, Lucy Pugli, Teresa Rowden and Peter Schultz. Additionally, in honor of their dedication and commitment, several administrators and staff members were honored and granted tenure by the board of education. In an effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event taking place at Connetquot High School on June 8th, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School physical education teachers Tara West and Michael Oldis were safely duct-taped to the walls of the school’s atrium

during a highly successful fundraising event. With assistance from “Bosti Buddies” Relay for Life Team Captain Mary Bertuccio, strips of duct tape were sold to the students for $1, with all proceeds directly benefitting the American Cancer Society and the districtwide event.

“The students were so excited to tape their teachers to the wall,” said Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Laura Kimball. “They had so much fun, and the Bosti community raised over $600 to help fund research to prevent and treat cancer patients.”

The students utilized a hands-on program called “More than Money” which was developed by Junior Achievement, the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness.

This mutually beneficial interaction between high school and elementary students empowers them to succeed in a competitive global economy.

Students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently celebrated “Things That Make Us Smile Week” to recognize Better Speech and Hearing month as an opportunity to raise awareness about communication disorders. To raise school spirit and promote fundraising, the week’s themes consisted of Pajama Day, T-Shirt Day,

How Many Smiles Can You Wear Day, Career Day and Crazy Hair Day. The school is proud to have supported the efforts of the Smile Train and Better Speech and Hearing Month for more than 10 years. Due to their successful fundraising this year, Sylvan Avenue raised a grand total of $8,583.48. With these funds collected, approximately 250 children in need will be

able to receive a free cleft palette surgery. The Smile Train Organization assists millions of children with untreated clefts by providing training, funding and resources to empower local doctors in more than 85 developing countries to provide 100 percent-free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care in their own communities.

Law Enforcement students travelled from the Oakdale location to the Bellport campus where the Personal Training Program is housed and the obstacle course was created. The course consisted of jumping rope, performing push-ups, scaling a wall, dragging weights with a tow rope to simulate pulling a victim to safety, performing CPR on a dummy, fighting off a perpetrator, making a quick arrest, and other physical challenges. Amidst the pomp and circumstance of a full color guard, Northwell Health’s leadership gathered with veterans and high-ranking military officials to honor members of the military, recognize their sacrifice and hear from former Army Undersecretary Patrick Murphy. The event took place at Aspire One World Trade Center on Thursday, May 24th. Since the event took place during Fleet Week, Northwell President and CEO Michael Dowling made sure to recognize “all Marines, sailors and Coast Guard service members” who performed naval service, as well as saluting “all of our soldiers and airmen.” Northwell Health has worked to address the issues facing returning veterans and their families for more than a decade, serving as both a treatment provider for veterans and their families, and as a major employer of veterans that values the skills they bring to their jobs. Juan Serrano, director of Northwell’s Office of Military and Veterans’ Liaison Services and a fellow veteran of foreign conflict, spoke to the importance of providing tangible commitments to those who serve. “Recently, we celebrated the ten-year anniversary of our Military and Veterans Liaison Services unit. We have so much to commemorate

and to be proud of. With this event, we continue to reaffirm and reinvigorate our dedicated health and employment services to our local heroes and their families. It is vitally important that we renew our vows to serve this community through continued education of our own employees, while spreading community awareness that this population deserves the highest quality of care that we can offer. “We served, our families served, and it’s a privilege to continue to support our nation’s heroes...not just on Memorial Day, but every day of the year.” As part of that ongoing pledge, for the eighth consecutive year, Mr. Dowling presented five veterans with checks representing the difference between their military pay and the regular salaries they would have received had they not taken military leave from their jobs at Northwell Health. They were: *Katrina Aronoff, chief radiation therapist at Phelps Hospital who served in the U.S. Coast Guard for five years and holds the rank of third-class petty officer and boat swain mate. *Ming Chan, a security officer at Long Island Jewish Medical Center who served as a mechanic in the U.S. Army for five years. *Davon Gass, a patient

care associate at Lenox Hill Hospital who served as a hospital corpsman in the U.S. Navy for six years. *Kelly Mahafly, an operating room nurse at Glen Cove Hospital who had the same role in the U.S. Army for six years. *Joseph Altidor, a food service worker at North Shore University Hospital who served in the Marine Corps for eight years, including a tour in Kuwait as a sergeant. The initiative recognizes the financial sacrifice veterans and their families make and helps returning veterans reintegrate to civilian life. Since 2008, 37 employees have received more than $1.6 million through the health system’s supplemental pay benefit. Mr. Dowling acknowledged the hard work and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their loved ones. “I don’t think we do enough for veterans,” he said. “And, I don’t think we appreciate their sacrifices enough. Law Enforcement and Personal Training students from two Academy locations recently collaborated in a training exercise to benefit both programs. Personal Training students designed an obstacle course for their Law Enforcement counterparts that is similar to the one used in the Suffolk County Police Department’s Youth Academy, a program many students want to participate in this summer. Training fellow students to prepare for this course provided those studying to be personal trainers with the opportunity to treat participants as clients. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is the career and technical education component of

their peers in the Personal Training Program for most of the year to improve their fitness levels and prepare for this event. The event also provided for cross-collaboration among many programs, supplying students with realistic industry-related experiences - Carpentry students built the wall for the obstacle course and Professional Photography students documented great moments, as did TV Production students. The ESBOCES Food Service Special Career Education Program prepared healthy meals and beverages for everyone. The Special Career Education programs equip special needs students with skills that may aid them in securing entry-level employment in specific industries. Personal Training students also took students with special needs through the course, as they’ve learned to work with people of all ages, those with physical limitations, and developmental needs. “Everyone came out of this event a winner,” said Personal Training Teacher Jonathan Audiino. “While the project was conceptualized to benefit the Personal Training and Law Enforcement programs, students from numerous classes used this opportunity to engage in project-based learning.”

Historical Marker Unveiled

A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island’s first newspaper was unveiled in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, June 6th. The marker commemorates David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker was installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. “This was another proud moment for the Press Club of Long Island,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Press Club. “We continue to honor places of significance in journalism history on Long Island, and there is no better location

than the first newspaper known to our area.” Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later, Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim, under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts, stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed, which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set

by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother. In the last three years, PCLI has has arranged the installation of historical markers in Huntington, where Walt Whitman founded The LongIslander; in Hempstead, where Newsday was first published, and Roslyn Harbor, where William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Post, lived.

Teacher Appreciation In an effort to highlight educators who make a positive impact on their students, colleagues and community, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory recently hosted his fourth annual Teacher Appreciation Awards Night. Every day in schools across Suffolk County, teachers touch the lives of thousands of children. However, a teacher’s work and impact reach far beyond the walls of the classroom. From grading papers and preparing special activities, to meeting with parents and running after-school clubs, teachers spend countless hours outside of class ensuring their students’ success. Presiding Officer Gregory believes that

exceptional teachers should be recognized and encouraged, so near the end of every school year his office reaches out to schools in the 15th legislative district in search of these extraordinary educators. Administrators, faculty and staff are invited to nominate a colleague in their school district who they feel goes above and beyond what is required, is an inspiration to his/ her peers, collaborates with colleagues to improve student achievement, inspires student lifelong learning, or is a master teacher and educational leader. Educators from the Copiague, Amityville, Half Hollow Hills, West Babylon, North Babylon and Wyandanch school districts were honored

at the event, receiving proclamations and words of praise from Presiding Officer Gregory. “Suffolk county schools are well known for providing students with an exceptional education, and our quality teachers are the backbone of our school system,” said Presiding Officer Gregory. “Every one of us has a teacher who has touched our lives that we will never forget. Educators are unsung heroes, and it is very important that we take the opportunity to highlight the efforts of the many exceptional teachers who educate our children and make a positive impact on their lives. I applaud the efforts of all of the educators who were recognized.”

Teddy Bear Clinic

Injured teddy bears were lined up at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville yesterday, with kindergarteners taking on the roles of doctors and nurses to treat the injuries. Slings were made, cuts tended to, and teddy bear pulses checked. It was all part of a free “Teddy Bear Clinic” orchestrated by NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Center to teach young members of the community about injury prevention, treatment, and to educate them on the medical profession. The children were asked to bring in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for the students to dress up as doctors and nurses. NYU Winthrop trauma nurses assisted students in treating the injured bears, and they were aided by Adelphi University nursing students. Similar Teddy Bear Clinics will be held at elementary schools in Freeport and North Merrick next week. “We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s handson experience treating injured bears helps bring

that to light.” Added Stephanie Stam, Principal of Lee Avenue School, “It’s so important to impart to young students knowledge that will help keep them safe outside the classroom and prevent injuries, but if emergency medical situations arise, we also want children to have awareness as to what happens next. It’s wonderful that we are able to bring to children hands-on experience in the medical world.” Presentations educated 75 children in total. Among the lessons taught: · Whose job is it to keep our bodies safe? (Ourselves!) · What’s the first thing we do when we get in the car? (Buckle up!) · Where’s the safest place for kids to sit in the car? (In the back!) · How do we protect our brains? (Wear a helmet!) · What’s the number to call in an emergency? (911) NYU Winthrop nurses also explained their roles as nurses and helped the children learn about different medical instruments. Students also went home armed with flyers providing tips for parents to keep children safe, including the proper safety belt fit. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in

the US, but child safety seats, correctly used, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street. Added NYU Winthrop’s Berghorn, “The majority of trauma injuries are preventable if children and their parents take basic precautions, stay alert and follow public safety rules.” NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Program is dedicated to reducing the number of preventable injuries through research, training and public education. The Hospital works throughout the year with local communities to spread awareness about safety-related issues and advocate for policies to improve the safety of Long Islanders. Long Island Fight for Charity Long Island Fight for Charity will reveal the courageous men and women volunteer boxers who will enter training to prepare to box in the organization’s 15th Main Event this fall. The “2018 Boxer Announcement Reception” will be held on Tuesday, June 26th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage, 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale.
