The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Based in Levittown, New Ground offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
This organization is also in need of additional volunteers to help out in various areas. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services.

Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Rebuilding Together Long Island www.RebuildingTogetherLongIsland.org Rebuilding Together Long Island is a 501(c)(3) non-profit volunteer organization that provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our Veterans, people with disabilities and families with children who meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to Repair Homes, Revitalize Communities and Rebuild Lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence. Their services may include plumbing and electrical repairs, weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, restoring heat and hot water, back and front yard clean-up, constructing wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and so much more. ‘WHO’S WHO’ IN HISTORY - All fourth grade students from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School in the Bayport-Blue Point School District recently showcased in-depth research projects to attending family and friends during the inaugural “Who’s Who In History” event. After spending ample time researching a person in history that made a positive contribution toward society, the students created a Google Slide Presentation that included quotes and facts that would give the attendees clues as to who their chosen person was. All in attendance had a great time putting the information together in order to guess who the famous person was based on the clues provided by the students. Earlier this month in recognition of Police Appreciation Week, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a plethora of events and activities that honored men and women in law enforcement and their
unwavering commitment to protect the citizens of the Sachem community. At Lynwood Avenue Elementary School, students welcomed members of law enforcement and first responders, including local volunteer firefighters,
New York City firefighters and those working as emergency medical service members. Students thanked the brave individuals before asking them a series of prepared questions about their career. Additionally, students
at Grundy Avenue Elementary School recently honored members of law enforcement at dismissal as students handed out thank-you cards on their way to board their school buses.

RAISING ALLERGY AWARENESS - Students from the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School located in the Connetquot Central School District recently learned a number of important facts surrounding allergy awareness courtesy of school nurse, Pat Koster. During her presentation, Mrs. Koster informed the students that food allergies are most common in young children, as the following eight items cause 90 percent of most food allergy reactions - milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. Additionally, the students took part in a fun activity in which they created interlocking paper links which featured words speaking to how to be a good friend to fellow students with allergies. St Joseph’s CYO Jennifer Goff Meet
St Joseph’s CYO sponsored the 33rd Annual Jennifer Goff Memorial Track Meet! Eleven Other CYO Track Teams joined St Joseph’s - Ronkonkoma to celebrate a Young Track Runner taken from us way too young. Jennifer was a young Track star for St Joseph’s and
met an untimely death walking home alone from Christmas shopping at 13 years old. The Meet had originally Run Relays to show that children should stay together, but as it has progressed, the Meet has added boys events and individual events. The Meet features races in Grades K-8
for boys and girls. Where Participating and doing your best over shadows the number of medals you win. CYO Chairman Henry Melchiona, who coached Jennifer, gave the opening remarks and then “Let The Races Begin”. It was great day for everyone who attended.
Magnificent Mathematicians Four Connetquot High School students displayed their excellence in mathematics as they recently competed against a number of fellow juniors and seniors in the nationwide MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge. The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, or, M3 Challenge as it’s alternatively known, spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool and as a viable, exciting profession. The Challenge
is to work on a real-world problem and submit a solution paper, within a 14-hour window during a weekend which took place this past March. The students’ faculty sponsor, Christopher Dolce, declared that the four student-participants – Dimitri Cavanagh, Justin Rosado, Aiden Spicciatie and Joe Vita – were entirely self-motivated, and, even though they did not win the $100,000 top prize, their submission was highly competitive and
was complimented by the judges. According to their official website, the M3 Challenge allows students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry. CELEBRATING STUDENT-ARTISTS - As a means of celebrating the numerous talented student-artists throughout the Connetquot Central School District, Connetquot High School recently hosted the end of year Honors Art Show, recognizing artistic achievements on both the elementary and high school levels. After an introduction from Director of Fine Arts and Music George Rockwin, students were individually called up to the front of the auditorium and presented with tokens of appreciation courtesy of their respective art teachers and school principals.
