POW/MIA CHAIR DEDICATION - On Sunday, May 30th, 2021, a memorial service was held at Huntington Town Hall, for veterans and the dedication of the POW/ MIA chair that was purchased and donated by Dr. Cynthia Paulis to a gold star mom Charlee Miller whose son was killed 15 years ago in Afghanistan. Ms. Miller is the director of The Art League in Dix Hills. Her son Col. Joseph Fenty was killed in a helicopter accident and never got to meet his newborn who was 20 days old. The chair will be on display permanently at The Art League in Dix Hills. The chair created by the Hussey Seating Company, honors all veterans who served, those that died, and those that are missing during wartime.

Sayville School District News Sunrise Drive Elementary Students Shine Sayville Senior Wins SWEEP-Sponsored Earth-Day Contest in NYS Earth-Day Poster Contest

Responding to an Earth-Day Poster Contest sponsored by New York State Assemblyman Jarett Gandolfo, students within District 7 submitted outstanding and creative posters that highlighted a “Greener Long Island,” among them were Sunrise Drive elementary students in Sayville. Recently, Assemblyman Gandolfo visited Sunrise Drive to recognize Molly Garafola (Grade 4) who was Sunrise Drive’s Contest Winner,

along with Honorable Mentions: Matthew Shay (Grade 4), Sarah Robayo (Grade 4), Olivia O’Connell (Grade 4), and Jack Tennis (Grade 5). Sunrise Drive Principal Dr. James Foy welcomed Assemblyman Gandolfo when he recently stopped by to award the students with his Earth Day Poster Contest certificate. Dr. Foy was very proud of the students for achieving yet another Sunrise Strong success and, in

addition, acknowledged “our amazing Art Teacher, Jeanette Ainsle, who ran this contest with our students.” Later, Assemblyman Gandolfo posted on his Facebook page: “Ended the day with another group of talented artists from Sunrise Drive Elementary School in #Sayville… looking forward to displaying the art in my district office as well in Albany!”

SWEEP sponsored an Earth-Day contest challenging students to repurpose the wipe containers that showed up in every classroom this year. The winner of a $25 Gift Card to a local business was Sayville Senior Antosh

Chorowski who turned his container into a bird feeder. Runners-up created savings jars and flower vases. “Reducing our waste and reusing products for a second life helps reduce Sayville Environmental Footprint and was a fun creative way to

challenge members to come up with new ideas for single use plastics,” said Science teacher Sonja Anderson. “Thank you to all those who participated!” Submitted by Linda Mittiga

PMHS Prom on Main Street will start at the beautiful Veterans Memorial Park in Medford for a “Mocktail Hour” with soda trucks with specialty mocktails, food trucks with items to snack on, and professional photography to capture the special moment. Connetquot CSD Now Offering Full-Day Universal Pre-K Program for 2021-22 Applications for Connetquot Central School District’s 20212022 Universal PreKindergarten program are now available on the district’s website, http:// w w w. c c s d l i . o r g / o u r _ district/universal_pre-k. New this year, the UPK program will be full day, run only by SCOPE and will be housed in several of the district’s elementary

schools. The program will run from 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. All interested residents are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, your child must turn 4 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2021. Applicants will be selected by a lottery to attend the full day program. All completed forms and required

documentation must be submitted via email to Central Registration at registration@ccsdli.org by June 4. Notification of those accepted into the program will be provided to families in early-July. This program is funded by a New York State grant and there is no cost to the applicant. Parents must provide transportation to and from the program.

The Connetquot varsity girls’ softball team improved its record to 4-3 with an exciting 12-10 win over visiting Half Hollow HillsEast. Julianna Levanti had

three hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the T-birds. Cailin Hall had three hits, scored three runs and stole two bases. Emily Crain added two hits, scored two

Unified Basketball Welcomes Middle Country Team

On Tuesday, May 19th, runs and earned a critical RBI Unified to take the win. Connetquot’s Connetquot Jordan Cole started on the basketball coaches Kyle Black mound, and earned the win. and Sarah Ecke welcomed coach Ed Miller and his Middle Country team to Connetquot HS. The home team played its second game of the season, and remain undefeated at 2-0! Both teams’ family, friends and support staff were loud and excited to watch the teams play. Truthfully, at the end of the game the score was irrelevant. The players and coaches are so excited to

participate in such sporting events, and the Connetquot school district is proud to host unified basketball for it second season! District superintendent Dr. Lynda G. Adams (Ed.D) was on hand to cheer on the T-birds! The NY State Public HS Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), along with Special Olympics, developed Unified sports to create athletic teams for training and competition combining students with, and without intellectual disabilities.

According to the NYSPHSAA, “Participation is rooted in the principle of meaningful involvement which ensures that every player is given an opportunity to contribute to the success of his, or her, team.” Unified sports also provides students with the opportunity to take on leadership roles in their schools and communities. Congratulations to all the participating student-athletes from Connetquot and Middle Country high schools!

be holding a Line Dance event on the farm itself. For only $25/person, you can join Skip and the Country Rhythms Team for a fun afternoon of dancing, food and a raffle. All dances will be taught; you can arrive as early as 1:30 PM and dancing starts at 2 PM. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM starting June 12th running through October 10th! You will find organically-grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and it’s mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. Individuals and groups are able to volunteer at the farm and community service hours can be given. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm directly at 631.774.1556 to find out when you can start! Due to the pandemic, volunteers must bring a pair of gloves. Additionally, they suggest volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Sachem High School East junior Samantha Christian was recently named as one of 83 artists to showcase her artwork, “Overwhelmed,” at the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island: Best Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum exhibition.

Each year, the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington hosts a juried high school art exhibition which serves as the culmination to a competition that involves high school art students analyzing works of art on display at the museum and choosing one to use

as inspiration for their own creation. In addition to Samantha’s outstanding accomplishment, she also received the Heckscher Achievement Award and the Huntington Fine Arts Honorable Mention.

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipients can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. Currently, this farm has various upcoming community events planned! Connetquot Graduating Senior Sets New Pole Vault Record Connetquot HS boys’ track & field coach Shelby White recently announced that graduating senior Micah Cooper set the new school record for the pole vault on May 24th. Cooper set the new record by vaulting 14’7” breaking the record of 14’6” set by Thomas Domozych in 2019. Tom was on hand to watch Micah break the record and was the first one on the mats to congratulate his former teammate! Cooper is now ranked #1 in Suffolk County, #2 in Suffolk County and #4 in New York State! Micah is undefeated in the pole vault in league III making him league champion. His goal now is to become division II and Suffolk County champion by season’s end. According to coach White, “ Micah has spread his talents around for the team over his career at Connetquot, scoring in events such as the 100m, 200m, 4x100, high jump as well as the pole vault. Is It Safe To Donate Blood During The Pandemic? Donating blood is a selfless act that saves lives. Blood donors may recognize the vital role they play in patient care, but many may wonder if it’s safe to donate blood during

the pandemic. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is safe for anyone who is well to donate blood. That even goes for people who are social distancing due

to COVID-19. The CDC has recommended various safety measures to ensure the safety of donors and donation center volunteers and staff members. Such measures include spacing

donor chairs at least six feet apart and encouraging donors to make donation appointments ahead of time. Appointments can ensure donors are not spending more time at the donation

center than is absolutely necessary, reducing the likelihood that they have contact with someone who may have COVID-19 but not know it. The Red Cross notes it has instituted

additional safety protocols, such as laundering blankets used by donors after each use and requiring all donors and staff to wear face coverings or masks during the donation process.
