One of this organization’s oldest and largest programs is its family foster care program, which has served children and families throughout New York City and Long Island since 1952. Little Flower is committed to ﬁnding safe and nurturing homes for children and young adults that are unable to remain home with their families because they believe every child should have guidance, stability and love. Little Flower strives to meet the immediate needs of children entering foster care by partnering with dedicated foster parents who bring experience and skills in supporting children experiencing trauma. Potential foster parents undergo a thorough application and screening process, complete training, and participate in a home study before becoming a foster parent. The Little Flower team provides ongoing support and services to foster parents to ensure they can create the most nurturing environment for the foster children in their care. Additionally, Little Flower partners with foster parents and children’s families to support the children while their family receives the support and services they need to safely parent upon the child’s return from foster care. They also work with extended family to ﬁnd relatives or other permanent homes for children who cannot safely return to their parents. This

For children requiring specialized care, Little Flower offers a Therapeutic Foster Boarding Home (TFBH) program based on their Wading River campus that works with children placed in foster care through Nassau or Suffolk County. Therapeutic foster parents are provided with additional training and certiﬁcation to best care for the specialized needs of the foster children in their home. In addition to providing temporary care for children in a safe and nurturing environment, foster parents work closely with the organization’s social work team and the child’s parents in support of family reuniﬁcation or permanency planning and ensure children are available to attend family visits. Foster parents model positive behavior, provide guidance and positive experiences, as well as support educational, dental, medical, and mental health needs of the child. Little Flower is proud to partner with such compassionate individuals willing to help children in need thrive and reach their full potential. Vivian M., a foster parent with Little Flower for more than 13 years, shared that she became a foster parent because she “loves children and wanted to make a difference.”

Connetquot’s Lauren Dailey To Receive Prestigious Estée Lauder Scholarship

Bellport High School commended the top 67 students of the Class of 2022 during a celebratory Evening of Excellence. The seniors were honored for distinguishing themselves through their academic performance. All have maintained a gradepoint average of 93 or higher. “Excellence just does not occur by accident,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani. “It is the gradual result of always striving to do your best with high intention, sincere effort and mindful execution.” Prior to the presentation of awards, high school Principal Erika Della Rosa presented Rianna Raghunandan as the Class of 2022 valedictorian, Calvin Pedatella as salutatorian and Eric Ciavatta as class essayist. They were each named for their dedication to academics. The evening also featured the presentation of six teachers (one from each school) whom the top students collectively agreed were those who most inspired and positively influenced them during their educational journeys. Addressing the honored teachers, Dr. Giani said, “Being recognized by these high achievers as having inspired them is a tremendous distinction. It just goes to show that your

successes do not always show up in the classroom. Connetquot Graduates Who Made The Ultimate Sacrifice Honored

Knights of Columbus and members of the Connetquot community celebrate the lives of Frank Todarello and Matthew Bayliss.

Dozens of community members, military veterans, friends and family took the time to take part in the celebration of the lives of Frank Todarello and Matthew Bayliss, while thanking and comforting their surviving family members. This was a

wonderful opportunity for the community to remember that Memorial Day is much more than an extra holiday to welcome in the Summer of 2022. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic organization founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity. The

Members of the Sunrise Council #6607 of the Knights of Columbus arranged for a special dedication on Memorial Day, at the Oakdale LIRR station, to honor two Connetquot graduates who made the ultimate sacrifice as members of the U.S. Army. Surviving members of the families of Frank Todarello and Matthew Bayliss were invited by the Knights of Columbus to honor the memory of both young men, who were taken from us too soon. Frank graduated Connetquot in 1966, was drafted in 1967 and was a casualty of the war in Vietnam in 1968. Matthew graduated in 2005, enlisted after graduation, served in Iraq, and was killed in 2007. The families of both young men, along with grateful members of the community, were on hand for the ceremony. The Knights of Columbus presented each family with flowers and a plaque in celebration of the lives that Frank and Matthew lived, and the sacrifices they made on our behalf. Honored guests included Islip Town Supervisor Mrs. Angie Carpenter and former Connetquot BOE Trustees Raymond Carta and Leo Marinick.

Honoring First Responders

The Sachem Central School District is showing its appreciation for the community’s first responders through a number of events. Many of the District’s elementary schools invited first responders to their buildings for celebrations and parades. Students created posters

and cards for police officers and firefighters to show thanks. At Merrimac Elementary School, fifth graders had a questionand-answer session with first responders to gain insight into their day-today routines. Nokomis students sang for their special guests, prior to students introducing their

family member heroes to the crowd. Waverly held an appreciation breakfast for first responders before students cheered them on at a schoolwide parade. Similarly, Tamarac students participated in a siren parade and presented the First Responders Children’s Foundation with a check for $500.

At 87 Lindenhurst Resident Still Making Suffolk County Better

STILL MAKING SUFFOLK COUNTY BETTER - Marylou Krzeski of Lindenhurst who at age 87 drives to Literacy Suffolk’s Bellport headquarters at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System to work two full time days. After retiring as a commercial insurance account executive 22 years ago, Marylou Krzeski of Lindenhurst started a second “career,” volunteering for Literacy Suffolk as an English language tutor for adults. She also trained to be a tester, helping the program match both native and nonnative English speakers to tutors and to monitor student progress. Today, though, program tutors and staff know her as a capable administrative assistant who at age 87 drives to Literacy Suffolk’s Bellport headquarters at the Suffolk Cooperative Library System to work two full time days. Executive Director Susan Shiloni. “When our office space was downsized and when we came back to the office after the worst of the pandemic, she was right there making order out of the chaos.” Ms. Krzeski was honored during a Literacy Suffolk volunteer recognition breakfast on April 26. During the program, Assistant Deputy County Executive for Suffolk County Olga El Sehamy, presented a special certificate to her on behalf of Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone for her “exceptional contributions” to the county’s residents. What motivates Ms. Krzeski to drive a half hour to volunteer twice a week when other retirees, years younger, might sleep late and pass their day watching TV? “It is something to look forward to, and I feel

appreciated,” she says. “It keeps my mind sharp, and so long as I stay useful, I’ll think it will stay that way.” Most of Literacy Suffolk’s volunteers are its more than 100 tutors. Because of the pandemic that number is down considerably, and more than 300 adults are waiting to be matched with a tutor. In recognizing Ms. Krzeski’s service, Ms. El Sehamy, an immigrant herself, noted the ripple effect of all Literacy Suffolk’s volunteers: “You may think that you are only helping students, but when you help a person, you’re also helping a family, and you’re helping a community.” Suffolk County residents interested in tutoring or providing administrative support to tutors and staff, as Ms. Krzeski has done, can learn more about Literacy Suffolk at literacysuffolk. org.

Student Filmmaker Takes Top Prize Bellport High School senior Jillian Kerr-Smith recently won the Best High School Experimental Film title at the 12th annual Luminaries Film Festival, held as part of the Long Island Media Arts Festival at Five Towns College. Kerr-Smith took the top spot for her music video, “Wake Up,” that aims to shed light on the social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Her two-minute film, which took her two weeks to create, incorporated numerous props that she made herself. “The whole film was an experiment to test how many props I could make myself,” she said. “This award means a lot to me because it shows how much I have grown as a filmmaker, being able to create something that shows my creativity even though I lacked resources.” When not making films, Kerr-Smith spends her time playing a variety of instruments and performing community service. She will attend Hunter College in the fall to study film.

Summer Challenges Kick Off From cover to cover, Connetquot Public Library’s summer newsletter will provide you and your family a season of possibilities with novel experiences, entertainment, and excitement. As the school year winds down and vacations begin, what better time to join our 2022 Summer Challenges. Partake in a host of classes and events illustrating the lives and habitats of our aquatic friends. Starfish, squid, and seahorse, beach totes, beach flags, and beach glass are just a sample of what we have to offer. Set sail into summer with this year’s theme, Oceans of Possibilities. Join us on Saturday, June 25, between 10:00 am and 12:00 pm for our Summer Challenges kick off event. Start with an ocean-themed green screen photoshoot to

mark the beginning of the season. Enjoy live caricature drawings, face painting, raffles, and more. Teens will make a Cricut craft and adults will create oceanthemed coasters. For all who sign up in person that day, there will be a free giveaway while supplies last. While discovering and rediscovering a love of books and the inspiration, joy, and knowledge they hold, summer challenges now include innovative and exciting prospects. While children and teens will still earn virtual badges and raffle tickets for reading, there are even more ways to participate. Children may complete Activity Challenges and Outdoor Activities as a new and vital part of earning both. These Family Events are a great way to spend time together this summer. Teens may participate in Learning Commons events, complete community service opportunities, and even finish our Bingo challenge. Exciting themed prizes and grand prizes await. For adults, each book you read or listen to provides an

opportunity to win prizes from our weekly drawing and a grand prize at the final raffle. Share this love of reading with your family and all the library offers. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks) is hiring new lifeguards for the summer season with no prior certification required. There are positions available at Montauk/Hither Hills, Wildwood, Orient, Jones Beach, Robert Moses, Heckscher & Sunken Meadow State Parks. New York State Park lifeguards must meet certain eligibility criteria, which includes successfully completing the qualifying

procedure, before being hired. Candidates must be 17 years of age to take the exam and valid photo ID is required at check in. Applicants must have 20/70 uncorrected vision in both eyes. Contact lenses or glasses are not permitted. VALID CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and first aid certification is preferred but not necessary at time of hiring. *All certifications must be completed by the end of rookie training in order to graduate. Lifeguards will be hired at $18.15 an hour.

The qualifying procedure will be held on Sunday June 12th promptly at 7:30AM at Suffolk Community College, Grant Campus, Brentwood, NY. The final event of the new hire procedure will take place at the West Bathhouse Ocean front at Jones Beach. Lifeguard candidates must provide their own transportation from Suffolk Community College to Jones Beach. On-site registration opens at 7am & the test will start at 7:30am. The exam consists

of 100-yard timed swim, 50 yard cross chest carry, ¾ mile run and 350-400-yard timed ocean swim. You must bring sneakers! All components are timed and scored based on your finished time. Results of Sunday mornings exams will be announced, and a rookie draft will take place over zoom on Monday, June 13th, 2022 9am. A link will be emailed to all candidates who successfully completed both portions of Sunday morning’s exam. Those candidates who

successful accept positions on Sunday, will be required to attend 5 paid days/40 hours of Jones Beach Lifeguard Rookie Training beginning on Saturday, June 18 through Wednesday, June 22nd. Hours for rookie training will be 7:30am-3:30pm. For additional info call 631 321-5871. On Wednesday, May 11th, Connetquot Unified basketball coaches Kyle Black and Sarah Ecke welcomed their crosstown rivals Comsewogue High School to Connetquot HS. The home team played its second game of the season, and remain undefeated at 2-0! Both teams’ family, friends and support staff were loud and excited to watch the teams play. Truthfully, at the end of the game the score was irrelevant. The players

and coaches are so excited to participate in such sporting events, and the Connetquot school district is proud to host unified basketball for it second season! District superintendent Dr. Lynda G. Adams (Ed.D) and BOE president Lee Kennedy were on hand to cheer on the T-birds! BOE trustees Milynn Augulis, Marissol Mallon, Brian Murphy and Jaclyn Napolitano-Furno were on hand for the season opener on

May 10th. The NY State Public HS Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), along with Special Olympics, developed Unified sports to create athletic teams for training and competition combining students with, and without intellectual disabilities. According to the NYSPHSAA, “Participation is rooted in the principle of meaningful involvement which ensures that every player is given an

opportunity to contribute to the success of his, or her, team.” Unified sports also provides students with the opportunity to take on leadership roles in their schools and communities. Bayport-Blue Point High School student-artists were selected to exhibit their artwork at two regional venues this spring, the Bay Area Friends of the Arts Juried High School Art Show and Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum. Ten local high schools participated at BAFFA and exhibited work from some of Long Island’s most talented students. Bayport-Blue Point High School students who participated and received

recognitions include: Isabella Coluccio honorable mention Alexandria Davis - 2nd place Amanda Feldman honorable mention Amelia Volpe - 3rd place Giavanna Zavala recipient of “Women Sharing Art” Scholarship Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school artists the opportunity to

exhibit their artwork in a museum. Students in grades 9-12 created a work of art inspired by artwork in the museum, and hundreds of inspiring artists from Nassau and Suffolk counties submit their work. Ginger Hanley and Amelia Volpe both received Achievement Awards in the Long Island’s Best exhibit. The district congratulates these fine young artists on their accomplishments and extends must success in their future artistic endeavors.

ED AND BROOKE ATTARD APPLAUDED - Suffolk County Legislators Rob Trotta and Trish Bergin applaud Ed and Brooke Attard, owners of Three Learning Experiences, for Granting Wishes to Three Critically Ill Children. Ed and Brooke Attard own the Learning Experience Centers located in Ronkonkoma, Massapequa and Plainview. In appreciation of the fundraising efforts of Brooke and Ed Attard, Suffolk County Legislators Trish Bergin and Rob Trotta presented Brooke Attard with a proclamation at her Ronkonkoma Learning Experience Center. Ed and Brooke Attard own the Learning Experience Centers located in Ronkonkoma, Massapequa and Plainview. The schools provide early education and day care programs. The Centers focus on each of the six early stages of development from infant through to kindergarten. Each facility features classrooms and a playground that ensure a warm, nurturing, educational and stimulating environment to enable the children to learn, be active and to interact with one another. The Attard family believes in giving back to the community they serve. They recently held a fundraiser at

their three locations to grant wishes through the Make a Wish Foundation to three critically ill children. Their three Long Island based centers raised over $15,000 for the organization. “I think it is great that they raised so much money in a month and I commend them for their efforts and good work,” said Suffolk County Legislator Rob

Trotta. “The Make a Wish Foundation is a great organization and benefits so many children,” added Trotta. “The Attard’s demonstrate the meaning of community. Working alongside the “Make a Wish Foundation” is extraordinary and they definitely made an impact on those children’s lives,” stated Legislator Bergin.
