How to Prevent Injury When The Benefits of Including Yoga in Your Exercise Routine Exercising

Exercise is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. The World Health Organization recommends that healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64 perform at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity each week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week.

Many adults cite hectic schedules as their reason for not getting enough exercise, but even those who do find time to exercise could find themselves sidelined if they do not take certain preventive measures to reduce their risk for injury. Though injuries can happen to even the most seasoned and knowledgeable athletes, there are certain measures adults can take to reduce their injury risk: Recognize your limitations. Once you have established a regular exercise routine and your body has grown accustomed to daily exercise, it can be tempting to overdo it or even unknowingly push your body to points that put you at a greater risk of injury. But recognizing your limitations is an essential part of avoiding injury. As you exercise more, you may notice certain areas of your body respond better to exercise than others. For example, if your wrists ache after strength training sessions, reduce the amount of weight you are lifting

or look for strength-building exercises that don’t require lifting weights.

Warm up before each session. No matter how accustomed your body is to regular exercise, warming up before each workout is still necessary to avoid injury. Warming up before each workout elevates your heart rate and increases circulation, loosening the joints and increasing blood flow to the muscles you’re about to exercise. Between five and 10 minutes of low-intensity cardiovascular exercise can help loosen up your body and prepare it for the more grueling workout to come. Switch your routines every so often. When exercise becomes a part of your daily routine, you may end up hitting a plateau. When that happens, your workouts may feel less effective. Switching up routines every so often can combat that problem while also reducing injury risk to overtaxed muscles forced to endure the same exercises day in and day out. Diversify your workout every so often by choosing new exercises and switching up the cardiovascular portion of your workout.

Give your body time to rest and recover. Exercise feels good, both physically and mentally. Daily exercise can help adults lose weight, and shedding those extra pounds can improve mobility and help adults live more active and fulfilling lives. Exercise also causes the release of hormones known as endorphins, which trigger positive feelings in the body. Those positive feelings can be somewhat addictive, but it’s important that adults give their bodies time to rest and recover between workouts. Lack of time to rest and recover makes bodies vulnerable to injury, so include time to recover in your weekly exercise regimen. Daily exercise can help adults live long, healthy and fulfilling lives. But it’s important that men and women of all ages take steps to reduce their risk of exercise-related injury.

University of California, Los Angeles, found that a particular type of yoga that included brief, daily meditation reduced the stress levels of caregivers tasked with caring for people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Yoga continues to grow in popularity. In a questionnaire administered every five years as part of the National Health Interview Survey, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health and the National Center of Health Statistics found that the number of people practicing yoga increased dramatically between 2002 and 2012, when approximately 21 million adults acknowledged practicing yoga. That figure equated to nearly double the number of people who practiced yoga just 10 years earlier.

The almost meteoric rise in popularity of yoga can likely be traced to many factors, including a growing awareness among the general public regarding the impact a healthy lifestyle can have on both short- and longterm health. An essential component of a healthy lifestyle involves taking steps to protect our bodies, and that can include making an effort to reduce the aches and pains that are often associated with aging. “The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, such as lower back pain, arthritis, headaches and carpal tunnel syndrome,” explained Natalie Nevins, DO, a board-certified osteopathic family physician and certified Kundalini Yoga instructor.

The American Osteopathic Association notes the benefits of yoga extend even further than relieving chronic pain. According to the AOA, yoga can help men, women and even children increase their flexibility as well as help them build stronger, more toned muscles. Additional benefits of yoga include weight reduction, improved cardiovascular and circulatory health and improved energy and vitality. But the benefits of yoga extend beyond the physical to the mental. The American Psychological Association notes that several studies have shown that yoga can help strengthen social attachments, reduce stress and relieve anxiety, depression and insomnia. For example, a 2012 study from researchers at the

One of the more attractive aspects of yoga is that it requires little or no financial commitment on the part of the people who practice it. Unlike fitness centers that typically require members to commit to yearly contracts or even potentially costly month-to-month memberships, many yoga studies do not require longterm commitments, instead asking that customers pay a small amount each time they visit if they are hesitant to commit to memberships. In addition, yoga requires just a mat and some appropriate clothing, ideally clothing that’s conducive to flexibility but not so loose that it will prevent you from performing certain poses. Before including yoga in your exercise regimen, speak with your physician. Once you get the green light, look for a beginner’s course, explaining to your instructor that you are just starting out. Many yoga studios offer introductory classes that help men and women acclimate their bodies to yoga and the various poses it entails before moving on to more challenging poses.

HOLBROOK CLEAN-UP - Once again the semi-annual Holbrook Clean Up, which is cosponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay along with the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, was a huge success thanks to over 75 local students and volunteers. Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center at Patchogue-Medford High School special education included site fostered compassion for each other, animals, and society. The students went on a field trip to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and were given a tour of the facility. They were introduced to Brooklyn, a 12 year-old dog that lost her home. ESBOCES Social Worker Lynn Walsh said, “We are hoping that someone will adopt her and give her a good home where she can spend her final years.”

Walsh added, “The students had such compassion for the animals at the shelter, especially Brooklyn. They asked to hold a fundraiser to collect items to donate to the shelter.” Art Teacher Jean Kleifgen-Guli got involved with the cause. “The idea was to take the compassion the students were feeling and translate that into inspirational artwork and poetry,” she said. The students felt very strongly about how the animals were treated and the importance of shelters, adoptions, and animal rescues.

Their artful message made an impact. Cat and dog food, toys, treats, blankets, and other items started pouring in. The students recently went back to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter to deliver the donations and were presented with Certificates of Appreciation. Student artwork will be on display at Sketchbook Studio in Patchogue from Wednesday, June 9th to Thursday, June 16th and will be available for viewing by the public during gallery hours. Colonial Education the students learned about traditional Colonial school activities and had the chance to visit several interactive workshops. The fourth-graders learned to make wax candles,

fashioned personal silhouettes, read from a Blue Point primmer and studied how to make dolls from apples.

Budding young scientists filled the auditorium of the Suffolk County Legislature on Wednesday to educate Legislators on their outstanding projects that won first place accolades at this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Science Fair. From kindergarteners to 6th graders, students examined, hypothesized, and tested theories relating to gravitational pull, velocity, speed, deceleration, and stoppage time. Legislator Bill Lindsay was fortunate enough to have two winning students from his district. Joseph Malossi, of Sayville, and Emily Denton, of Bayport, both received proclamations for their winning projects. Joseph Malossi is a fourth grade student at Cherry Avenue Elementary School who crafted his project on centrifugal force after gaining inspiration on the Gravitron Ride at a local summer carnival. Joseph used bean plants to study the effect of centrifugal

force by examining bean plants as they grew in soil. As a result of the experiment he discovered that the roots were most affected as they spread from the center of the album to the edges. Though he originally hypothesized that the bean plants would be more affected by gravity, it was ultimately centrifugal force that had a greater impact. Joseph believes this experiment can have future implications relating to space missions and he is determined to continue study on this matter. Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fifth grader, Emily Denton, designed her project on stop sign activity after noticing a young man running right through a stop in her neighborhood. Emily conducted a twomonth experiment where she monitored stop sign activity and gathered research from the New York State and Suffolk County Traffic Safety

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Database Manager Bob Cuce survived two tours in Vietnam. Cuce was drafted in 1969, went through basic infantry training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, received advanced training in field artillery at Fort Sill, and then was shipped over to Vietnam. His military occupational training changed from field artillery to anti-aircraft artillery. He was assigned to the 4/60th ADA Battalion First Field Forces II Corps but ultimately was assigned to E Battery 41st Artillery as a gunner on a Quad 50. Cuce served on a specially-converted fiveton truck and survived two tours in Vietnam after traveling roads that were mined, booby-trapped, and ambushed. He strives to help veterans, past and present, as First Vice President of the National Dusters, Quads & Searchlights Association (NDQSA). This year with supplemental donations from Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Academy students from the Bixhorn Technical Center, $5,410.75 will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation in Tennessee at the 34th Annual NDQSA Reunion. “My organization is comprised of air defense artillery soldiers that served in Vietnam and we have a Good Works Committee,” said Cuce. Each year, Cuce and members of NDQSA raise donations to give to the Fisher House Foundation because 94% of the donations go directly to help veterans past and present. This year, Cuce was surprised when he received a phone call from Art, Design, and Visual Communications Teacher Talia Cliffe. She asked him to come by her classroom

because her students had done some fundraising for his organization and she wanted to present him with the proceeds. Cliffe said, “It was our privilege to help Bob Cuce, NDQSA, and veterans because we owe them so much. NDQSA goes out of their way every year, at their reunions, to help other soldiers. We wanted to help those efforts.” For several weeks, students raised awareness on R.E.D. Friday which stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. R.E.D. Friday is a grass

roots organization created by relatives and children of veterans. Cuce said, “People wear red on Fridays to represent the blood that was split by veterans both past and present.” Students from the Computer Repair Program, Art, Design, and Visual Communications Program, and Skills USA wore red on Friday for several weeks to raise awareness and raised $410.75 by selling muffins. Cuce was moved by the donation and grateful for the efforts of the students.

This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Suffolk Scholars Suffolk Federal recently honored North Babylon High School students who completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, a web-based education program which supports financial education at schools throughout Suffolk County. Suffolk Federal partners with EverFi, Inc. to bring this interactive financial management program to participating local high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers. The students received certificates during an exciting ceremony at the high school. “These students are our future generation. The more we can do to help them grow and prosper, the more our country will benefit,” explained William J. O’Brien, Suffolk Federal’s President and CEO. “Suffolk Federal is proud to partner with EverFi to bring financial education to local students, to prepare each one of them for a sound financial future and to shine a light on the importance of financial literacy.” The 10-unit course includes over six hours of programming covering a variety of financial

topics such as savings, investments, credit cards, and student loans and other critical financial literacy concepts. Through the platform, students became certified in several topics related to personal finance, allowing them to become more informed and responsible citizens. The program uses the latest in new media technology - simulations, avatars and gaming - to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation. In 2015, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) highlighted EverFi’s schools-based financial education programs in a report on Advancing K-12 Financial Education: A Guide for Policymakers. According to Samin Alam, a junior at the high school, “The Suffolk Federal Scholars Program allows students to focus on the financial aspects of not only getting through college, but the distant future. Veteran volunteers and community organizations were asked to provide assistance as a community service at the Seventh Annual Veterans Stand Down on May 20th at the Northport VA Medical Center. The Northport VAMC sponsored this biannual event to help homeless, and at risk for homelessness, Veterans in need of assistance. Seventy Three (73) Federal, State, County and local human services agencies were present to assist Veterans in need of health, employment, financial, housing, educational, and VA Benefits. In addition, a meal and hair cut station were available as well as two local food pantries (Island Harvest & Long Island Cares) and a clothing

closet to all Veterans in attendance. Furthermore, 159 Veterans in need of assistance were helped by those in attendance.
