Quality of Life Initiative
In celebration of Autism Awareness month, students and staff from Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District joined together to raise awareness and funds for a special cause. Throughout the building, students and staff dressed in autism awareness shirts and
bracelets that were sold to raise money for the Spectrum of Dreams Foundation. Additionally, students decorated countless creative puzzle pieces that lined the hallways of the building. During the month, students learned about the autism spectrum as they watched various videos and listened to announcements
each day in which a number of prominent role models with autism were highlighted for their outstanding achievements. As a culmination to the monthlong initiative, the school presented a $1,025 check to the Spectrum of Dreams Foundation President Tim Szlosek.

Outdoor Classroom Day experience in an outdoor setting. The students, who were dressed in summer attire such as Hawaiian shirts and sunglasses, spent the day rotating through various stations, which focused on different aspects of the district’s curriculum.
The outdoor adventurers enjoyed themselves as they painted rocks, read aloud to one another, took part in a collaborative STEM activity and got in valuable exercise by walking around the surrounding area with teacher supervision.

Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some
carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that
incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

Students enrolled in Bayport-Blue point High School physical education teacher Tricia Livingston’s modified physical education classes were recently treated to a special athletic initiative with assistance from members of Inclusive Sports and Fitness, Inc. Through this collaboration, students with special needs are able to explore alternatives to physical education that focus on their intrinsic needs, while capitalizing on the strengths that can advance healthpromoting behaviors, inclusion, empathy and the
advancement of academic performance. In addition to assistance from the ISF mentors, Bayport-Blue Point High School students volunteering as peer mentors were on hand during the activities. Due to their assistance, greater opportunities are provided for those students with different abilities in order to maximize their potential for success. During class time, the students highly enjoyed themselves as they interacted with kettle balls, ropes, medicine balls and TRX bands in the Bob Venero Fitness Center in
an effort to enhance their overall physical well-being. “Working with the ISF coaches has been a universally positive experience for everyone involved,” said Mrs. Livingston. “It has taken modified physical education classes to the next level and engaged students in a new way. We have been very fortunate to collaborate and create a positive, motivational and exciting curriculum.” The district would like to thank ISF mentors Joe, Sonila and Melanie for their assistance with this wonderful initiative.

Friends of Carly Third- through fifthgrade students at Academy Street Elementary School were recently joined by members of the community to celebrate the school’s annual “Friends of Carly Fun Run” in honor of former Academy student Carly LeStrange.
After being cheered on by kindergarten through second-grade students lining the front entrance of Academy Street Elementary, students, staff and their families joined one another to jog around the Bayport-Blue Point High School track and got
in some valuable exercise. Additionally, $1,620 was raised in honor of the Carly LeStrange Scholarship Fund by members of the community to be awarded to a 2018 graduate of Bayport-Blue Point High School.

Military veterans representing the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team recently visited with staff and students at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School to talk about the honor that comes with serving the country, along with their schedule of upcoming games.

the health and welfare of other wounded veterans. In honor of their visit, the Sycamore students prepared flags, banners and wrote letters of thanks and respect, which were presented to the veterans during the visit.
The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this nonprofit that believes mental health is
as important as physical health at 631.226.3900. They strive to ensure that all their local needs and voices are not only heard, but also recognized by government leaders, the business community, advocacy groups and educational organizations in our region! If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Its mission is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one Mentoring Program that aims to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. They are searching for compassionate mentors to work with the students they serve here on Long Island. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Seeds of Recycling Earth-conscious concepts sprouted from several recent science lessons in Gwendolyn Levesque’s first-grade class at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District. Ms. Levesque’s class explored a number of earth science topics aimed at the conservation and revitalization of the planet’s resources. In an activity focused on recycling, students studied different ways that items could be repurposed. Students watched a video showing how used car
tires are repurposed as an alternative material for roads. Mirroring this process, students crushed Cheerios into fine crumbs that were then added to plaster of Paris to create their own miniature roadways. During an additional activity, students crafted cups out of newspaper that they used to plant sunflower seeds. The lesson taught students about recycling by using the old newspaper for an alternative purpose. Through the lesson, students were introduced to the concept of
biodegradability – they learned that the newspaper would break down over time and allow the roots to grow freely in the soil. Continuing the lesson on plants, Levesque’s class studied the many different types of plants, the various parts of a plant and the process of photosynthesis. Concluding the activity, students carefully planted flower seeds inside of a cup and watered them. Just in time for Earth Day, the student activities coincided with the class unit on life science.
Importance of Screening Connetquot High School students enrolled in Alaina Bennett’s health classes were recently paid a visit by Donna Cioffi and Linda Bonnano of the “Got Checked” organization, as they spoke to the students about breast cancer awareness and the proper screening techniques beneficial toward saving
lives. Both Mrs. Cioffi and Mrs. Bonnano are breast cancer survivors and co-founders of the organization formed in 2015 geared toward spreading the word that early detection can save lives. Through the use of music, videos, fitness and school assemblies, they encourage students
to converse amongst their friends and family members to be aware of any sudden changes they might notice in their bodies. Students were asked to sign a pledge in an effort to pass the word along, and to get into the habit of selfexamination.

BROADWAY COMES TO BABYLON: The Argyle Theatre

For several years, the movie theater on Main Street in Babylon Village sat with its glasspaned doors papered over with posters from its final showings, grimly pinpointing the exact moment in time those doors had shut. Last month, those posters came down, and the doors opened to Long Island’s newest and largest year-round professional equity theatre, bringing new light and color to the classic streets of Babylon Village as the stunning Argyle Theatre. Operating in a town full of old New York charm like Babylon, Mark and Dylan Perlman, the father/son owners of the venue, could think of no better show with which to kick
off their inaugural season than Guys and Dolls, sponsored by Forerunner Technologies, Inc. The classic musical by Loesser, Swerling & Burrows builds highstakes tension and love between the high-stakes gamblers and other colorful characters created by New York writer Damon Runyon. Centennial Celebration Fire Island School District is celebrating the 100th anniversary since the founding of its first school in 1918 this year and parents recently participated in a special viewing of a retrospective exhibit for the occasion. The exhibit, curated by Woodhull’s technology integration specialist Debbie Gerken,
allows viewers to walk chronologically through the various periods of the district’s development and view artifacts giving a sense of school life during each period. The artifacts came not only from the district itself but also largely from longtime residents, who may have been students, parents, board of education members, or all of the
above, who generously contributed their photos and records to the project. The exhibit is scheduled to appear again during the graduation ceremony and spring concert at Woodhull on June 20th (open to the community) and also at the Ocean Beach Historical Society over the summer.
Sachem Shines Innovation and collaboration serve as the staples for success in the science research laboratory at Sachem High School East in the Sachem Central School District as two juniors continue to conduct advanced brain imaging research in connection with the Department of Radiology at Stony Brook University. Since September, Ian Limjoco and Vincent Zhang have been working side by side on a study to identify gray matter lesions in the subcortical structures of the human brain brought on by multiple sclerosis. With help from a special high-powered computer provided by Sachem administration, the students have the ability to remotely access anonymous patient data and run analysis software to analyze fMRI brain
scans. Utilizing the ITKSnap 3D imaging software, the duo creates segmented renderings of patient data that is then studied in an effort to improve brain analysis techniques in the scans of multiple sclerosis patients. The students hope to identify where impairments become apparent in the patient’s bodily function by identifying the location of the lesions in the gray matter. “This is the closest we have come to working with human subjects,” Limjoco said. “This program has allowed us to advance our research through human connection.” The ongoing collaborative research efforts led by Dr. Tim Duong, Stony Brook University’s vice chair for research, radiology, provides the Sachem
scientists with countless educational opportunities as they progress through their research. Working in connection with medical students, Limjoco and Zhang have had the chance to attend college-level pillar courses studying MRI radiology and access labs that aren’t normally available to students until graduate-level college courses. “All of the institutionlevel research we conduct is an incredible introduction that supports my premedical aspirations,” Zhang said. Limjoco and Zhang recently presented their research at the Long Island Science Congress at St. Anthony’s High School and aim to continue their gray matter research into the summer.

Food Drive for Veterans Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio announced today that Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services will be holding a food drive for veterans in need from Monday, June 11th through Friday, June 29th. Last year’s food drive provided more than 300 bags of food to veterans and their families, and was so successful that the Town decided to make it an annual drive. The Division of Veterans Service will once again work with local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) representatives to distribute the donations directly to veterans and their families. Supervisor Romaine said, “Brookhaven Town is home to veterans who have selflessly and courageously served our country. Many of them need assistance,
and when provided with an opportunity, Brookhaven residents always rise to the occasion to help our neighbors in need. I want to thank the Division of Veterans Services and our local VFW representatives for working together to organize this initiative.” Councilman Michael Loguercio, the Town Board Liaison to the Division of Veterans Services said, “Brookhaven veterans and their families have sacrificed so much, and it is very gratifying to know this drive will provide them with some muchneeded relief. I encourage residents to donate to this very worthy program and for our veterans to contact the Town’s Division of Veteran Services to find out what benefits you may be entitled to.” Drop off points for the

Programming Competition
Autism Awareness in multiple interactive activities during the week leading up to the walk. Students decorated puzzle pieces, wore blue on Thursday and listened to daily facts about autism on the morning announcements each day. A sea of students dressed in blue circled the building in a show of collective
support. Each class held a banner that was decorated with puzzle pieces and words of encouragement. Moving forward, Hiawatha Elementary plans to make the walk a tradition that continues to raise awareness for the cause. For a second year, six Sayville High School students, juniors and seniors from both Mrs. Alison Galea’s and Mrs. Dawn Thelian’s AP Computer Science courses, volunteered to participate in the NY Regional High School Programming Competition held in May
at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. In addition to engaging in the challenging academic contests, the students had fun with the twenty-six other high schools and forty-eight teams in the competition. The Sayville High School teams did well. “We were very proud
of their clever solutions to the challenging problems,” Galea and Thelian agreed. Congratulations got to the following Sayville competitors: Reece Pena12, Philip Rinaldi-12, Thomas Faughnan-12, Richard Cotes-12, Joshua Minutello-11, and Andrew Deutsch-11

Heritage Museum Day Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted its second annual “Heritage Museum Day,” inviting students’ family members and Connetquot High School students to the school in an effort to promote a widespread cultural understanding and respect for the many customs celebrated throughout the world. Throughout the halls of
the school, each classroom featured a learning environment where Connetquot High School volunteers were able to shed light onto the different customs of the countries represented and engaged the younger students in a variety of activities. Such presentations included activity stations where students could create Dominican carnival masks, a photo booth which was
designed to mimic the culture and clothing of India, and a demonstration of an authentic Native American Pow Wow. Additionally, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a cultural museum, where multiple displays were set up with factual information about countries around the world, including but not limited to Colombia, Poland, France and India.
Historical Figures In an effort to bring history to life, the fourth-grade students of Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently participated in the school’s annual Writing Celebration Wax Museum.
The young historians first researched a wellknown historic figure, then created an informative display board and prepared an appropriate costume to display for invited guests, staff members and fellow students.
The individuals that students chose to portray included famous professional athletes, America’s Founding Fathers, well-known inventors and civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined personnel from the Town of Islip Information Technology department at the Oakdale Senior Center recently for the Town’s “Tech Talk” event. The “Tech Talk” series is designed to help familiarize senior citizens on technology and usage. The Town’s tech staff offer hands-on tutorials, walking adults through different functions that IPhones, Droids or laptops
have, including sending, opening emails, or texting photos from a smartphone. Each adult is able to sit oneon-one with an instructor and have their individual questions answered. One resident who attended the Tech Talk event said she was determined to grasp the different functions offered through her cell phone, and saw this class as a way to accomplish her goal of sending a picture message to her son.
“Cell phones and modern technology are not easy to learn, especially later in life. The ability to assist our senior population with technology use is a contribution that I’m proud to facilitate at senior centers across the Town of Islip,” stated Supervisor Carpenter. The “Tech Talk” series travels throughout the Town’s Senior Centers. Stay tuned for an event near you.
