The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that. New Ground, based in Levittown, offers Veterans and families the following main programs to truly help them conquer homelessness: their Long Term Housing Program, their JumpStart Program and their Veterans Program. Their services include Adult Workshops, Career Development, Education Advocacy, Education Assistance, Financial Literacy, Reading All-Stars, Special Memories and Tutoring.
New Ground’s JumpStart Program launched in 2012 to expand these critical services to additional homeless families on their wait-list for the Long Term Housing Program. This Program is open to any homeless families, not just Veterans, and is intended to give families a jump-start on accomplishing their goals. When these families later transition into the Long Term Housing Program, they are well on their way toward realizing the steps needed to secure an independent future. A primary social worker is assigned to all families in both of these programs once they start with the organization. New Ground social
The New Ground Veterans Program is another very important part to their organization. Homeless Veterans can get placed in reduced cost housing and be provided with intensive social work and education services by New Ground to assist them with achieving goals in the areas of employment, financial literacy, education, career development, parenting, basic life skills, education advocacy and more. In 2016 their services were expanded so they can serve an even greater number of Veteran households. Through collaboration with the Northport VA Center, New Ground began offering their programs to over 400 homeless Veteran households in their Veteran Affairs Supportive Housing Program. Since opening their doors, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and into permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!

Their Long Term Housing Program combines affordable housing with New Ground’s intensive services. Currently this includes a home in Huntington with two homeless Veteran families, a home in Bethpage under renovations and plans to add more housing units. For 3-5 years, New Ground provides all the needed educational, vocational and counseling services to the family members living in this housing, as well as basic needs and general support. Residents also take time with a social worker and put together a plan of how they can reach their goals. All residents pay an affordable rent and although New Ground assists them with various costs and hurdles they may face, they truly get the feeling of being a responsible homeowner.

While speaking with Robyn, she shared a great story about a routine visit with her dental hygienist, Sue. Sue was explaining how arthritis was really becoming a problem in her hands. After a short discussion with Sue, Robyn challenged her to cut out all dairy for a month. After only a few days Sue called Robyn to share she was already having less pain and was now fully committed to making it through the dairy-free month. Through the month Sue made a few appointments with Robyn and made a few other small changes to her diet. Not long after that first month Sue’s arthritic pains were gone, she lost 30 pounds, reduced her bad cholesterol and her blood pressure normalized. certainly knew. As Sue felt more fit and energetic, Robyn encouraged her to start running. Robyn is part of a running team called Elite Feats and is known as an “Ultra Runner”. This is someone who runs more than 26.2 miles at once! Robyn and Sue have since become friends and Sue is now a member of the team. These great results do not stop with Sue as she now inspires others to make similar small changes in their diet to improve their own health. Robyn encourages those struggling with type II Diabetes, high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure to simply come to a class. She is confident that she can help you implement some changes in your diet and you can regain control of all of these, in many cases eliminating the need for the medicines we have
all grown accustomed to. She spoke specifically of another client who, after taking a free class with her became focused on getting off insulin for his Diabetes. He made significant changes and only 5 weeks later he was off all medication and his cholesterol and BP improved significantly as well. Now his wife attends. Robyn can also help with other common issues such as Crohn’s disease and food allergies. Although she states that you may not cure the issue, you can absolutely control it and maintain a state of remission. Robyn is also available for speaking engagements on nutrition and cooking. As if that wasn’t enough, she is going to start the run by running to it….a 50 mile run overnight from NYC to Ronkonkoma to then run four more miles around the lake. Dance Connection is proud to introduce this year’s inductees into the National Honor Society of Dance Arts. The National Honor Society for Dance Arts™ (NHSDA) is a program of the National Dance Education Organization, created to recognize outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement in students studying dance in public and private schools in K-12 education, dance studios, cultural/community centers, performing arts organizations, and postsecondary education. Students applying for consideration must meet requirements for both dance and academic areas of study. The 2019 induction class included Allison
Bradley (East Islip), Jeanna Diaz (Bay Shore), and Elizabeth Ericson (East Islip) into the Junior Honor Society and Jillian Bradley, Taylor Cappozoli, Faith Henderson, Melissa Kinnear, and Lilly Scholl (all East Islip students) into the Senior Honor Society. The inductees and their guests were treated to guest speaker Emily Hart-Lopez, a professional performing artist, dancer, and dance/ fitness instructor based in New York City who spoke to them about the influence that dance had on her life, even beyond the studio and stage, as well as what it is like to pursue a career in the arts. Afterward, everyone enjoyed a reception in the studio to celebrate. “Honoring the dedication of students involved
in the arts is so very important. They are expected not only to work to excel in their academic life, but to show passion and dedication for their arts education as well and it is wonderful to be able to offer our students this recognition”, Mary Naftal, Artistic Director. Shark Camp Scholarship Sachem High School North sophomore Jacob Karavias was recently selected as one of only two eighth to 12th grade students nationwide to be awarded the O’Seas Conservation Foundation’s Greg Norman Shark Camp Scholarship. The Montauk-based nonprofit organization O’Seas Conservation Foundation, led by world-renowned shark biologist Dr. Craig O’Connell, integrates shark conservation efforts with youth education. The mission of the organization is to secure the future of marine life and oceans through local shark research efforts that directly involve youth as a means to educate, inspire and train these future leaders of marine conservation. experience. He will assist Dr. O’Connell and his crew as they deploy small-scale longlines to assess the shark species living along the New York coastline. The majority of the sharks captured are small; however, Dr. O’Connell has captured thresher, blue, sandbar, mako and even white sharks during his past sampling. Upon capture, sharks are immediately tagged, data recorded, dehooked and released. In addition, the O’Seas Conservation Foundation has other projects that will certainly prove this opportunity a life-changing experience. Some of these activities include livefeed baited camera trap activities, a tuna troll-cam, active shark tracking, baited remote underwater video system deployment and whale vocalization research.

HAVING FUN AT THE ‘BEACH’ - In celebration of summer being right around the corner, students enrolled in Connetquot High School’s Life Skills classes recently hosted a Luau-themed craft fair right from the comfort of their classroom setting. With assistance from teachers Amy Doerrie, Siobhan Guido and Danielle Orobello, the students created a number of beautiful handmade crafts which were available for purchase to both staff and students alike. In addition to creating the exquisite crafts such as beach-themed wall décor and wooden American flags, the students were able to practice their customer service skills and handled money as cashiers. All Aboard The Smile Train promote fundraising, the week’s themes consisted of Comfy Day, T-Shirt Day, How Many Smiles Can You Wear Day, Career Day and Crazy Hair Day. Additionally, the students were granted the opportunity to “Walk A Mile for A Smile” as they walked around the front of the school building, and
safely duct taped school principal Alane Dougan to the wall in an effort to raise additional funds toward the Smile Train Organization. After the students finished up their turns, Superintendent of School’s Dr. Timothy P. Hearney applied the final piece of tape on Mrs. Dugan before
she was suspended on the wall entirely. The school is proud to have supported the efforts of the Smile Train and Better Speech and Hearing Month for more than 10 years. This year, staff and students have raised upward of $4,000 due to their successful fundraising, which will
