Packing Science By: Jamie Lynn Ryan You wouldn’t think packing groceries into a shopping bag would require, I don’t know, a degree in rocket science – but apparently, this task is much more complex than it seems, causing me to leave the supermarket shaking my head in amazement almost every time. For starters, there is no need to shove about 40 pounds worth of merchandise into one bag – paper or plastic – that neither the cashier, nor I, nor any human being can possibly lift without developing a hernia. Secondly, placing two or three items in the same said bag is equally absurd. The contents of one shopping cart need not, under any circumstances, be divided among 17 bags, I can assure you. And then we have the arrangement of the items within the bags… Granted, I’ve never
worked in a grocery store and I’m not sure if there is some particular protocol for packing; however, I’m fairly certain that items like bread, eggs and produce should not be placed underneath bottles of soda, jars and cans. Just a hunch. The best part of it all is that, knowing this has been a recurring issue, I attempt to race through the checkout line, packing as many bags as humanly possible myself to avoid such problems. But inevitably, there always comes a point when the cashier feels the need to jump in – and downhill it all goes. I mean, you can clearly see the way I fit as much as possible, mixing heavy items on the bottom with the lighter ones on top. Again, not rocket science. Just common sense. But no sooner has the cashier grabbed a bag then it is promptly filled with three bottles of soda piled on top of a loaf of bread and some fruit and vegetables. You
didn’t want to actually eat that stuff, did you? Nah, not at all, keep piling it on. Better yet, why not put each item in its own bag? I’ve gotten to the point that I will stand there and rearrange the items into a more acceptable combination before leaving the store, then hand over the 5 or 6 leftover bags which I no longer need. Who cares if I’m holding up the line. Take the hint. Watch and learn. It’s really not difficult; it just requires a minimal effort, which shouldn’t be too much to ask. If it happened once, I could deal with it. Twice, I would be slightly irritated. But every time, every store, every cashier… is there a special training school for this sort of thing? And if so, what qualifies as a passing grade, not dropping anything? Guess we’ll leave that to the customer as they’re struggling with their 40-pound bag out to the car.

A packed house filled the Staller Center at Stony Brook University during the School’s 39th Convocation Ceremony to congratulate the 130 graduates – the largest graduating class to date. “Our graduates are entering the most honorable of all professions and one that poses a number of challenges – continuing to remain current with the explosive growth in our understanding of the origins of human health and disease, implementing the translation of that knowledge into better diagnoses and newer therapies for our patients, and changing practice patterns with the challenges presented by the failing fiscal health of healthcare,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President of the Health Sciences, and Dean, School of Medicine, addressing the Class of 2013. “Despite these challenges, I remain highly optimistic; Medicine always finds a way to move forward, to do better and to continue to positively impact the lives of our patients.” Leading cancer
researcher and keynote speaker, Michelle M. Le Beau, PhD, the Arthur and Marian Edelstein Professor of Medicine, and Director, University of Chicago Comprehensive Cancer Center, told the graduates to expect many opportunities during this “unprecedented period of growth in medicine and biomedical research.” “Your generation will reap the benefits of this new era of genomic and ‘personalized’ medicine, and as physicians you should embrace new technologies in your field, be ambitious and seize opportunities,” said Dr. Le Beau. “Today we turn to you to provide future answers in medicine with our goal always to improve the lives of others and relieve suffering.” During the traditional doctoral hooding ceremony, the candidates selected a faculty mentor, family member, friend, or other physician (or someone with an equivalent doctoral degree) to hood them in preparation to receive their MD degree. After receiving their degrees, the graduates took the Hippocratic or Physicians’ Oath for the first time as new doctors. “Now our paths will diverge, as we take on our varied careers and anticipate new destinations,” said Shamik Mukherji, MD, who delivered the Student Address. “The world of medicine will change along with our lives, but we need
to remain united, do good work, and know that we may need each other along the way.” Among the diverse group of new physicians graduating from the School: Dr. Obinna Ndum, the son of Nigerian immigrants and the first graduate in the School’s history to receive an MD/ MBA combined degree; Dr.Munzareen Padela, a native Long Islander who spent eight years at Stony Brook to complete a BS to MD program; and Dr. Ryan Vellinga, a Utah native and father of three who worked multiple jobs before choosing medicine as a career. Collectively, the Class of 2013 will begin their journeys in medicine in one of 21 specialty residency programs, such as Internal Medicine, Neurology and Emergency Medicine. Nearly one-third of the class (42) will train in primary care disciplines, helping to meet the estimated need for 15,000 new primary care providers over the next five years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. Fifty-five percent matched to residencies in New York State, and 26 percent will stay on Long Island for their residency training. Thirteen graduates will stay at Stony Brook for residency training in specialties such as Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Surgery and Anesthesiology.

Long Island residents gathered at Coopers Beach once again as Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) hosted its 7th Annual Kites For A Cure, on Saturday, May 25th, raising more than $50,000 for lung cancer research. From 4 to 6 p.m., participants braved the wind and rain to gather at the beach and kick-start the summer season in the Hamptons. “Kites For A Cure continues to be one of the ‘musts’ of Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons – rain or shine! It’s a chance for the entire family to come out to beautiful Coopers Beach and celebrate the start of summer,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “We are proud to host Kites For A Cure in Southampton each summer – it gives us the opportunity to bring families together and bring attention to the nation’s #1 cancer killer.” Mayor Epley served as
the Honorary Commodore, memorializing his father, who lost his own battle with lung cancer nine years ago. New York State Senator Lee Zeldin and his family also joined the Mayor at Coopers Beach for a fun afternoon of kiteflying. In addition to the kites flying at the event, Kites For A Cure also brings kites to fly in the windows of most merchants in the Village of Southampton. Thanks to support from the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and local schools, most stores feature beautifully painted kites in their windows to show their care for the cause and the community. At the event itself, with sponsorship from Rechler Equity Partners and The Hampton Business District at Gabreski, funds raised at the 7th Annual Kites For A Cure will go directly to UALC’s national lung cancer research grant program. SPRING FLING SEASON - Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Learning Center recently welcomed the warm weather with its annual Spring Fling Celebration. The students traveled todifferent classrooms in small groups where they engaged in a wide variety of activities. Students planted seeds, performed in a play, made tie-dye butterflies and danced along to songs about spring. The students also created mud pies with chocolate pudding crusted cookies and gummy worms. The fun filled day concluded with an obstacle course where students navigated around creepy crawlers.

On May 22nd Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., packed several shopping bags with brand new children’s books, and stopped by the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was again invited to attend the Children’s Center Bagel & Books Breakfast along with other childrens’ advocates who have partnered with the Education and Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Children’s Center which provides a safe area for youngsters while families are involved in court proceedings. The center is open 5 days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Wendy Meyer. This year alone, the Children’s
Center has been a safe, and comforting, place for over 1,100 youngsters to spend time while their parents are in court. Books and supplies are collected, and donated, by members of the CTA throughout the year. Teachers from the 11 schools within the district provide books, small toys, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the children who spend time at the center. The CTA has also provided hundreds of hats, scarves and gloves, along with the books and supplies. Mrs. Meyer explained that when children leave for the day, they are given a new book of their own to take home, as well as hats, gloves and scarves in the winter season. As Felicio was introduced
by Advisory co-Chair Cheryl Zimmer he said that “… it’s always a pleasure to attend the Bagel & Books Breakfast and hear about the wonderful work they do, and the effect they have on the children they work with. It is gratifying for the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association to be a small part of the program’s success. I will pass along to our members that their unofficial ‘adoption’ of the Children’s Center is greatly appreciated by the staff, and fellow supporters.” The CTA has pledged its continued support for the youngsters that need the resources we can provide. The Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex is an important part of the CTA’s mission of community support
Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Mr. Anthony Felicio, Jr., and the organization’s scholarship committee, welcomed six students and their families to the May 21st Scholarship Presentation Reception. Held in the high school library Felicio welcomed the students, their parents, and the “… Connetquot teachers who made a difference”, in the students’ lives.. 120 essays were submitted with the title: The Teacher Who Made a Difference in my Life. The essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the following Connetquot students were selected as the six winning entries: Michael Caputo (Mrs. Patricia Culp), Brianna Gianni (Mr. Mauricio Arias), Kyle Brennan (Mr. John Hargrave), Asha Antony (Mr. Alan Fertmann), Shouik Dutta (Mr. Brian
Majeski) and Alyssa Meano (Meghan Andersen). Each of the six selected students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500 to help cover college expenses. Felicio said “On behalf of the Connetquot Teachers Association I congratulate the students who are being presented with these financial awards. I thank the parents for their support of education, and a special congratulations to all the teachers who were singled out by the students, as well as those here tonight, with the essay winners. Being part of this special event reemphasizes the positive impact we, as teachers, have on our students. It makes me proud to be called a teacher.” Mr. Felicio and CTA Vice President Mr. Chris Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families, for submitting quality essays. Felicio thanked everyone involved in this year’s CTA
Scholarship program, in particular the members of the scholarship committee: Rob Bachisin, Christine Dassler, Cathleen DiPeri, Chris Dolce and Joanna McManaman. Besides providing financial grants to graduating seniors, the Connetquot Teachers Association provides financial support to local boys’ and girls’ sports teams, supports the annual ‘Every Child’s Dream’ dinner, and the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. As a result of this year’s destructive winter weather the CTA worked to assist residents of the community with food, water and other necessities, as well as providing financial support. The New York State United Teachers Association recently presented the CTA with the prestigious NYSUT Community Service Award in recognition of the organization’s commitment to the community.
The Islip Town Department of Parks and Recreation is currently preparing for the Town’s Annual Americana Fair, to be held on Saturday, June 8th at the Islip Grange, in Sayville. The fair, which will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., features craft vendors, a farmer’s
market, live entertainment, and petting zoos. Also, this year the Town is teaming-up with Idol Maker, USA and WALK 97.5 Radio to kick-off a “Stars of Tomorrow” Talent Show, which will be part of a series of singing competitions running throughout the summer.

The Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will hold its annual juried art competition this summer in conjunction with the upcoming exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea. This year’s competition is titled Let’s Go To The Beach, and all amateur and professional artists are invited to submit up to three works representing Long Island’s beaches. Deadline for entries is June 28th. A panel of museum staff will select final entries, which will be displayed in the Visitors Center from August 10th through September 8th. Judging for the contest takes place on Friday, August 9th and the winners will be awarded in at an artist’s reception on Sunday, August 11th from

PUBLIC SERVICE HONOREES - On May 24th, Senator Lee Zeldin presented Certificates of Recognition to the 27 students and three teachers from Eastern Suffolk Boces who recently helped Hagerman Fire Department Firefighter Ralph Lettieri, Jr. Ralph lost his left leg due to a flesh eating disease, just under a year ago. The students volunteered their time to upgrade his house and also donated Christmas toys to the Lettieri family.
Smiles For A Cause help find a cure for these conditions, and for the past five years the school has helped aid them in their mission. Joining together as a school, Sylvan Avenue students and staff participated in a weeklong awareness effort for the cause. They coordinated their school outfits according to different theme days and helped raise funds for Smile Train by collecting donations leading up to the school’s “Walk a Mile for a Smile” fundraiser. This year,
the school raised $3,600 for the organization. When coupled with their corporate sponsor match, the students’ donations will help to provide surgery for 42 children. Since 1999, Smile Train has provided free cleft palate surgery to more than 580,000 children who would have otherwise never received it. They have also helped train tens of thousands of medical professionals and have established programs in over 75 countries.
During her extended time with the Patchogue Chamber, Gail introduced a computerized membership program and oversaw the creation of the Chamber’s first website. She established evening networking meetings and the Chamber’s monthly newsletter.
In 2003, Gail worked to create the Greater Patchogue Foundation, a charitable 501c3 organization that works to advance, promote and improve the charitable, cultural, and educational virtues of the Greater Patchogue area.
Medieval Kingdom A King, queen and even a court jester were on hand for James Wilson Young Middle School’s Medieval Fair. The event, which is hosted annually as a culmination to the sixth grade’s social studies curriculum on the historical age, has become a time-honored tradition in the Bayport-Blue Point School District. Dressed in traditional medieval clothing, the school’s sixth-graders spent the day engaging in cultural and artistic projects and
celebrating their newly acquired knowledge. Working together in their homerooms, the students fashioned authentic medieval artifacts, including regional flags, which they proudly displayed throughout the day. Additionally, they tested their memory of key vocabulary terms during a medieval bingo, were entertained by Ned the Jester, who performed traditional acts enjoyed during medieval times, and even had the chance
to take part in a traditional coronation ceremony and parade. Prior to the fair, the students spent several weeks researching and compiling information on topics from the Middle Ages and completing research projects and display boards depicting their findings. On the day of the fair, the students’ projects were put on display for their peers and family members in attendance to review.

The National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) inducted 19 Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students from the Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead. The criteria for students to be considered were nomination by a teacher, excellent attendance, and a 90+ grade average in their technical classes. As part of the ceremony, students participated in a candlelighting presentation to highlight the seven character attributes promoted by the National Technical Honor Society including: skill, honesty, service, responsibility, scholarship, citizenship, and leadership. SOAR CHAMPIONS - Energized fourth- and fifth-grade students, enrolled in the Sayville introductory SOAR Program, were fascinated by the afterschool program on aerodynamics, held for eight weeks. At the end of the sessions, the students enjoyed putting what they learned to the test during a fun-filled morning of competition. Congratulations to the participants who spent a Saturday morning with teachers Melinda Moran and Maria Brown and their families to showcase their skills.
Anyone arriving at Academy Street Elementary School on the day the fourth-grade classes celebrated Colonial Day would think they had stepped back in time. Dressed in traditional Colonial attire - bonnets and dresses for the girls and knickers and Colonial hats for the boys - the students spent an entire day recreating the time period they had been studying during their social studies classes. “Today’s program is a fitting conclusion to our lessons on the Colonial time period,” said teacher
Carrie Almskog. “From the moment they arrived at school – from greeting their teachers to addressing their classmates – the students experienced what it was like for children back in the 1700s.” Students started the school day with a Colonial school morning, during which they reviewed rules and manners of students during the 1700’s that they had to abide by throughout the day. They recited from an Academy Street primer and practiced subjects that were taught during the era by doing math lessons with chalk, reviewing

Colonial Day their reading skills and practicing penmanship using a feathered pen and ink. During the craft portion of the day, students stenciled, drew silhouettes and fashioned candles. They also made apple cobblers and played games such as “boot pitch” (removing one’s shoes and tossing them at objects with the goal of who could obtain the most points) and outdoor sack races. With the help of several parent volunteers, the classes COMMUNITY HONOREES - Islip Town Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt also enjoyed a traditional and Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the Sayville Chamber of Commerce’s Colonial luncheon. Annual Golf Outing. In addition to building camaraderie amongst leaders of the Sayville community, the Golf Outing is used to honor those who have accomplished great things in the community. This year the honorees were Tony and Pat Brinkmann of Brinkmann Hardware, and Don Corkery of the Sayville Fire Department.

A beautiful selection of brand new and gently used dresses, shoes, handbags, and other merchandise were available at the Prom Salon held at Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Ward Career and Technical Center (WCTC) in Riverhead earlier this month. The Prom Salon was the brainchild of the Adult Cosmetology Program students and their teacher LoBiondo. MAN OF THE YEAR - Legislator Rob Calarco recently joined with Rabbi Joel Levinson Dorothea and the congregation of Temple Beth El at a celebratory brunch congratulating Mayor Word got out that they Paul Pontieri as the Temple’s 2013 Honoree of the Year. The brunch had a record were asking for gowns, number of attendees, which served as an accurate indicator of Mayor Pontieri’s strong shoes, purses, and jewelry donations. The prom can be an expensive endeavor but some girls feel it is a monumental moment in their teen years. Ms. LoBiondo said, “We want to give girls the opportunity to join their peers and take the stress out of what should be a fun night.” High school girls have the opportunity to come back to the Riverhead campus of ESBOCES and get their hair, nails, and makeup done for their prom. All salon services are being donated by the Adult Education Cosmetology Program.

Champions Honored At Breakfast Twenty Sayville High School students were recognized for good character and integrity at the Spring Breakfast of Champions ceremony which included guests from Sayville Administrators, Faculty, Staff, and relatives in the celebration. These students were singled out for consistently demonstrating qualities of kindness, motivation, compassion, enthusiasm, diligence, and good citizenship beyond the classroom or athletic field or who achieved their personal best by striving to overcome major obstacles. Sayville High School teachers and staff nominated them for their positive conduct which has made a difference and provided the essential components for a successful High School Community. After the staff expressed their appreciation of each recipient, each student received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque created with their portrait on a Wheaties Box background. In addition this year, Peer Leadership students were recognized and certificates were presented to “a group of amazing young women,” Student Assistance Counselor Martha J. Kahan, L.C.S.W announced, speaking on behalf of the PPS staff. These students “not only volunteered to conduct classroom presentations on suicide prevention, but when faced with the tragic death of one of our 9th graders just about a month ago, rushed to assist us with the over one-hundred students who came to mourn the loss of their classmate. These young women, without particular training or preparation, rushed down to our

A memorial service was held at the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in Riverside on May 24th to honor 64 of Suffolk’s Correction Officers and Deputy Sheriffs who died in service since 1887. The Annual Memorial
Service was hosted by the Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Correction Officers Association and the Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs P.B.A. It was attended by families of the deceased, law enforcement
officers, county officials and civilian personnel. Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota was the master of ceremonies. Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco gave the Memorial Address.

Honor Society Inductees Eighty Sayville High School students, who maintained a 94.5 weighted average throughout their High School careers as well as demonstrated the attributes of scholarship, leadership, character, and service throughout their various co-curricula and extracurricula activities, were inducted into the National Honor Society this spring. Founded in 1953 upon the principle that “true education creates a well rounded individual,” membership into the August E. Hubel Chapter National Honor Society may have scholarship as the first criteria, but each of the Sayville candidates’ applications had to pass the rigorous examination for examples of leadership, character, and service in order to qualify for induction. Opening the ceremony, NHS Faculty Advisor Kevin Recker, welcomed, thanked and applauded the parents for their supportive roles while acknowledging the tremendous achievements of the young men and women. During the assembly, Principal Ron Hoffer addressed the members and their families, stating: “Sayville High School confers no higher academic honor on a student body than membership into this remarkable organization…. In addition, we look for individuals
who have integrity, honor, and take pride in what they represent. We are pleased to announce that the inductees here have met, and in many cases, far exceed these criteria.” After thanking the parents for serving as the role models for the “outstanding and remarkable group of young adults,” Mr. Hoffer also acknowledged the “commitment and dedication” of the Superintendent, Central Administrators, Board of Education, High School faculty, and staff. “We are very fortunate to have their tremendous amount of support and leadership… Without this collegial spirit, we would not be able to provide our students with the quality of programs that we offer here, year after year.” To put his message of striving for excellence in perspective, Mr. Hoffer shared the results of the 40-year longitudinal study by Dr. Douglas Heath, psychologist at Haverford College, in which Dr. Heath examined what was the greatest predictor of success in adult life. “What he found was,” Mr. Hoffer said, “participation in ‘activitybased activities,’” i.e., involvement in extra-curricula and co-curricula activities would likely continue throughout life and lead to genuine success in the future.
The ceremony continued with 2013 NHS slate of officers bequeathing their offices to the newly elected officers for the 2014-15 school year (see below), with special words of advice: From the Class of 2013, Nicole Sala handed over the office of President to Class of 2014 Sabrina Mayrose; From the Class of 2013, Curran Boyce handed over the office of Vice President to Nicole DelGaudio; From the Class of 2013, Kate Mulry handed over the office of Treasurer to Richard Salloum; From the Class of 2013, Erin Abraham handed over the office of Secretary to Erin MacDonnell; From the Class of 2013, Jacqueline Ryder handed over the office of Historian to Jill Mediatore. Upon closing, each inductee (see list below) was called by name to sign the NHS registry book and join their fellow NHS members on stage to receive a round of applause from their families. Congratulations to the newly inducted members of the National Honor Society!

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment. What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking. Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment. From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment. But it isn’t all bad.
These children quickly learn the value of money. It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner. For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for
rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money. Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work! On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
