n May 26th, the annual Bellport Memorial Day Parade was held. The parade gathered at the Bellport Village Hall and progressed down Station Road to the Woodland Park Cemetery, where a ceremony was conducted by the local VFW Post. Veterans, active service members, local fire and ambulance companies, the Bellport Middle School Band, the South Country Youth Soccer League and many more participated in the parade.

There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you
guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.
It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

Memorial Golf Outing On Monday, July 14th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) will host its 4th Annual Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Classic and Dinner at the Huntington Country Club, located at 483 West Main Street in Huntington. This year’s honoree will be Ron J. Eagar, CPA, CCIFP, Partner of Grassi and Co. The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members that has raised more than $250,000 since its inception, will expand to a second location in Long Island on July 24th and 25th. The event, which was originally started by a group of high school students, will hold its third annual fundraising game in the Baltimore area this June. The effort has expanded dramatically each year, with more than 2,000 participants and 10,500 attendees taking part in the 2013 charitable event. The expansion to Long Island, according to organizers, represents the first expansion leg in a program anticipated to spread throughout the country. The games are open to both male and female participants with no age restrictions and will be held at the Field of Dreams Park in Massapequa, New York. Music Teacher Workshop Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the acclaimed summer arts day camp whose programming has long included professional education in the latest techniques for arts educators, will present an expanded version of its 2013 Finale workshop for music teachers. Titled SmartMusic and Finale: A Program of Professional Development in Music Technology, the unique 5-day professional development class combines SmartMusic and Finale, two standalone applications created by different companies but designed to work together, to become a powerful teaching tool. It will take place on the 200-acre woodland Usdan campus from Monday, July 14th to Friday, July 18th, from 4 to 7 p.m. daily, and will be taught by certified SmartMusic and Finale clinician David Dolgon. The course fee is $400, and a certificate of completion will be provided for in-service credit. Usdan Center is located at 185 Colonial Springs Road in Wheatley Heights (Huntington) Long Island. Finale enables composers, arrangers, musicians, teachers, students and publishers to create, edit, audition, print and publish musical scores. It is the industry standard in music notation and composition software. David Dolgon is a clinician for MakeMusic!, the creators of Finale. He has presented staff development workshops
for the NY State Council of Administrators of Music Education, school districts and county organizations, in addition to teaching both graduate courses and music theory to high school students. Topics to be included on SmartMusic include: teaching students to practice effectively and efficiently, preparing for NYSSMA evaluation, exploring Content, creating gradebooks, Common Core, sending and receiving assignments and creating listening lessons. Topics for Finale will include: creating a document for export into SmartMusic, creating student learning objectives and testing in SmartMusic, creating an Mp3 of Finale documents, creating Kodaly stick notation documents, Finale Worksheets and scanning music into a Finale notation file.

Bayport-Blue Point School District will welcome Brian McConaghy as a new assistant principal this fall. Mr. McConaghy assumes the role from Robert Haas, who was appointed principal of the middle school earlier this year, and will begin his work in the district this summer. He has been assigned to Bayport-Blue Point High School, where he will be responsible for overseeing the guidance program and students in grades 10 and 12, as well as for assuming various administrative responsibilities. He was appointed to the role at the district’s May 27 Board of Education meeting.
“In addition to sharing our district’s educational philosophy for providing enhanced opportunities for scholars, Mr. McConaghy is known for making strong connections with the parents and students he works with – a key factor to ensuring students are provided with the support needed to succeed,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “We are excited to welcome him to our administrative team and are confident he will work well with our high school community.” Mr. McConaghy comes to BBP from the East Williston Union Free School District, where he served as the secondary chair of social studies since 2013 and a social studies teacher at the Wheatley School from 2003-2013. During his time in East Williston, he worked to create the Wheatley School’s research program, which culminated in the
building’s initial entry into National History Day; partnered with others in the Long Island social studies community to develop new programs and initiatives; and effectively planned, implemented and evaluated educational programs. Under his instruction, students earned an average mastery rate of 90 percent on the New York State social studies Regents exam, and 72 percent of students received a score of at least 3 on AP exams. “I am extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to join the BayportBlue Point High School community,” said Mr. McConaghy. “Throughout the interview process I was very impressed by the culture and atmosphere of Bayport-Blue Point, and I look forward to contributing to the outstanding success of the district.”

Cliff “Kip” Johannesen, (who at one point was paralyzed and in a wheelchair) but now is able to walk with the assistance of canes is offering his services as a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed Captain and P.A.D.I Master Diver to people with disabilities in the Long Island/NYC area. With his boat, docked in Lindenhurst, he is volunteering his spare time to take children with disabilities (along with a parent or guardian) or disabled veterans on fishing, snorkeling and boating trips in the Great South Bay.

With every passing day, it becomes clearer that summer is almost in full swing. The beaches are filling with tourists, and the ferries are packed! As a strong Memorial Day Weekend predicted, this summer is turning out to be very busy. It is my fifth summer working at Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach. My first few shifts of the summer have been crazier than in years prior. We are already seeing a rush of people eager to take part in the festivities associated with a warm summer. Thus far, it seems as if the lull created by
Hurricane Sandy has finally ended. People are returning to Fire Island slowly, but steadily. Only time will tell, but it looks as if we are experiencing a return to normalcy. Dolphins can already be seen swimming off the beach, and they are plentiful. As we kick off the summer, it is important to remember that Fire Island is not just a place to have a fun weekend; for many, like myself, Fire Island is the place that we call home. It is a place where memories have been formed. Each year, we see drunk people and other party animals who do
not take consideration for the environment or Fire Island as a whole. As an advocate for nature preservation, this truly saddens me. The state of both our beaches and our infrastructure has worsened in the past few years. Even though I’m just a kid, these changes are pretty obvious. Everywhere you look, degradation is found. As you head to the beach this summer, remember to pick up your garbage and protect wildlife. This will ensure that we will have great summers every year.

A Bug’s Life Blue Point Elementary School kindergartens learned about the anatomy of insects and their adaptations during a recent in-school workshop with the Long Island Center for Arts and Sciences. The program, Build a
Bug, served as a kickoff to the grade-level’s science unit on insects and introduced the students to the three sections of a bug and how each of their parts helps contribute to their ability to eat and avoid predators.
Stepping Back In Time To reinforce the lessons learned, the students created keepsake bugs using pipe cleaners and egg cartons and participated in a trivia game to identify different types of insects based on a set of clues.
James Wilson Young Middle School sixthgraders were transported back in time for a firsthand experience as part of their social studies curriculum. As a culmination to their lessons on the medieval time period, the entire grade level participated in a medieval fair this May, an event that included everything from a king and queen to a court jester. Dressed in traditional medieval clothing, the school’s sixth-graders spent the day engaging
in cultural and artistic projects and celebrating their newly acquired knowledge. Working together in their homerooms, the students fashioned authentic medieval artifacts, including regional flags, which they proudly displayed throughout the day. Additionally, they tested their memory of key vocabulary terms during a medieval bingo, were entertained by Ned the Jester, who performed traditional acts enjoyed
during medieval times, and even had the chance to take part in a traditional coronation ceremony and parade. Prior to the fair, the students spent several weeks researching and compiling information on topics from the Middle Ages and completing research projects and display boards depicting their findings. On the day of the fair, the students’ projects were put on display for their peers and family members to view.

The 20th anniversary celebration kicks off with the Friday night Leadership Event, an intimate evening reserved for Leadership Supporters. The excitement continues throughout the weekend with three Fire Island Dance Festival performances: the opening performance on Saturday, July 19th at 5 p.m. (open bar starting at 4 p.m.); sunset performance on Saturday, July 19th at 7 p.m. (open bar following); and closing performance on Sunday, July 20th at 5 p.m. (open bar following). Each performance features acclaimed and emerging dancers and dance companies. Leadership Supporters enjoy an elevated festival experience including the Leadership Event with cocktails on Friday, highly coveted tickets to the sunset performance on Saturday or priority seating at either 5 p.m. performance and prominent recognition in the harbor and throughout

Two-hundred girls and families from 34 states, Canada and England will be in attendance as Curvy Girls Scoliosis Support hold their second biannual Convention on June 29thJuly 1st, on Long Island. Founded in 2006 by then13 year-old Smithtown, resident Leah Stoltz, Curvy Girls has successfully engaged hundreds of young girls and families in mutual support and advocacy activities through the experience of scoliosis. Scoliosis is the lateral bending and twisting of the spine that, when progressed, causes body deformities and compromises internal organs. It affects seven million people in the U.S. with a diagnosis most
commonly occurring in pre-adolescence. The disease shows progression ten times more frequently in girls than boys. Curvy Girls groups provide peer-to-peer and familyto-family support and information. Now 21 and graduating from American University with a degree in business and marketing, Leah helped her group to go global after she was featured on the first TeenNick HALO Awards – Helping And Leading Others – in 2009. Hosted by entertainer Nick Cannon, the show engages celebrities to honor teens who give back to their community while overcoming hardship. Leah was honored by singer/actor Justin
Timberlake. With the help of this exposure, Curvy Girls has connected nearly three thousand affected girls through group meetings and social media., including 62 operating self-help groups - run by teens - that also operate in Brazil, Spain, and Australia.
