On Monday, June 15th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 27th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event Chair Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC and Event ViceChair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that in addition to the Golf Classic, a Tennis Classic has been added to the day’s events. The Tennis Classic will take place at the Crest Hollow County Club in Woodbury. Jill Byrne and Yvonne Evelyn will CoChair the Tennis event and will honor Maureen O’Donnell Hardiman, CLU, CLTU, Financial Advisor, Northwestern Mutual. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable risk factors including smoking,

cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/ overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and awards will follow. For Tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults may gain as much as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous exercise–like very brisk walking–even if they don’t begin exercising until middle age. Walking is the single most effective way for many Americans to establish and continue a healthy lifestyle to improve their heart health. In September of 2007, Congress designated the first week in June as National CPR & AED Awareness Week. This year, the week falls from June 1st7th. The week highlights how lives can be saved when more people know CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). The American Heart Association (AHA) urges the public to be prepared for cardiac emergencies, and for good reason. Plain and simple, CPR when started immediately in an emergency situation, saves lives. Each year over 400,000 people die from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA). Over 80 percent of these emergencies occur in the home. Unfortunately many bystanders do not initiate CPR, possibly because they do not want to get involved, or possibly because they do not know what to do. More than 92 percent of cardiac arrest victims do not survive to be discharged. However, these

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

James Wilson Young Middle School’s sixthgraders stepped back in time as they culminated a multi-week study of the Medieval Time period with a spirited fair. The event, which is hosted annually, has become a time-honored tradition in the BayportBlue Point School District. Dressed in traditional medieval clothing, the school’s sixth-graders spent the day engaging

in cultural projects and celebrating their newly acquired knowledge. During the fair, they participated in a traditional coronation ceremony before parading around the grounds to display colorful flags indicating their classes. Prior to the fair, the students spent several weeks researching and compiling information on topics from the Middle Ages and completing

research projects depicting their findings. On the day of the fair, the students’ projects were put on display for their peers and family members in attendance to review. The work done by the employees and the volunteers at the Center is vitally important to the children. Finally, it allows families to know their children are in a safe, nurturing, environment for the time that they need to take care of business while at the courts.” The center is open 5 days

per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Agnes Cento. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,100 children. Connetquot teachers have also provided hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center earlier in the year. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes. Mr. Felicio added, “As teachers, we go into the profession because we love working with and helping kids. We do that every day within the school house. To be able to have a positive effect on young children outside of the classroom is very gratifying to us.” Felicio has assured the EAC of the continuing support of the Connetquot Teachers Association.

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center students decorated tote bags that will be delivered to children ages 10-13 in Bosnia who participate in team building camps through the Bosnia International Servant Trip (BIST) organization. Messages of peace, love, hope, and encouragement adorned the tote bags. Liz, a Culinary Arts student declared she would decorate 10 tote bags for 10 children. “One just isn’t enough,” she said. “I know how it feels to come

from somewhere that you don’t have much.” Liz is an animal lover so her tote bags depict cartoon-like animals fashioned in the culinary world. Students learned that “mir” was the Bosnian word for “peace” so they used that on their tote bags with pictures of doves and peace symbols. Lisa Konnerth, Canine Careers teacher, was instrumental in spearheading this project. She said, “My cousin Cliff is one of the coordinators of the travel teams. He

travels to Bosnia with Camp New Hope and the Friendship Camp, building relationships and exploring peace and reconciliation. When the students at ICC learned how the war affected the children, they really wanted to participate and show they cared.” Twenty years later, Bosnia still bears the wounds of war. “The students felt like they were making a difference by sending messages of hope, love, and peace to children in a war-torn country,” said Konnerth.
