Connetquot Central School District Sports Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Team Bounces Back

SUFFOLK ZONE 4 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JUNE 2, 2021 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

Connetquot High School girls’ varsity lacrosse coach Sal Piscitelli spoke to his players after their recent 5-4 loss to William Floyd HS. The message was pretty straight forward: “… you are better than this.” The T-birds had won their first three games, but didn’t have the same precision and teamwork in their losing effort. The message clearly reached his players as they devoured Longwood at home two days later, by a score of 16-2. The satisfaction of playing to their potential against the visitors was enhanced by

the fact that it was Senior Night, recognizing the achievements of the team’s graduating seniors. The T-birds took a 9-1 lead into the half-time break, and scored 7 more goals in the second period. Outstanding offensive performances were led by Gabriella Carere (3 goals), Morgan Elliott (3), Anna Thornton (3) Erin McLoughlin (2) and one goal each from Anabella Cenci, Brooke Elizalde, Dylann Grable, Isabella Montouri and Reagan Silhan. Hannorah Ragus had 3 saves and Ella Deliso had one more to keep

Longwood from scoring. The T-birds are now 4-1 in Suffolk league play. Congratulations to the following graduating student-athletes, and thank you for your dedication to the girls’ lacrosse program and the Connetquot community: Grace Wichelens, Morgan Elliott, Jerica Rivera, Erin McLoughlin, Katelynn Marx, Daniella Bendetto, Holly Schack, Gabriella Carere, Anna Thornton, Emily Morris, Katherine Cuozzo and Katelynn Engeldrum.

Baseball Team Wins Home Opener 4-0 Connetquot high school baseball coach Rob Burger and his T-birds won their home opener on May 13th against visiting Lindenhurst by a score of 4-0. Senior, Sean Mileti earned a complete game win, striking out 11.

Nick Ricci and Ryan Kiendle each had one hit and two RBI’s for the T-birds. Connetquot remains undefeated, boasting a 4-0 record. The opening pitch for the team’s first home game was tossed by Liam Flaherty.

Seniors Sean Mileti and James Goff were recognized for their selection by NEWSDAY as among the TOP 100 baseball players in Nassau-Suffolk Counties.

The Charity of the Month for June is

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm

SUFFOLK ZONE 4 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY JUNE 2, 2021 • WWW.LONGISLANDMEDIAGROUP.COM

www.hobbsfarm.info

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly

makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. If you are looking for ways to volunteer or donate, visit their website for more information or read next week’s article on ways for how to get involved!

Options for Community Living, Inc., a Long Island based not-forprofit organization, received a grant award of $15,000 from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Funds support affordable supportive housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk County. “Everyone needs safe, stable housing,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ CEO. “Some conditions make it difficult for people to maintain a stable home without help. Supportive housing combines affordable housing with intensive coordinated services to provide that assistance.” Last year, Options’ supportive housing for formerly homeless people with disabilities and chronic health conditions provided housing for over 200 Long Islanders. The

award from Bethpage Federal Credit Union will help support emergency needs for tenants as well as home maintenance which is critical to program management, tenant stability, and housing safety. “Bethpage Federal Credit Union is an incredible community partner truly invested in improving the quality of life for vulnerable Long Islanders,” said Robano-Gross. “We are grateful for their support.” “We are pleased to partner with Options for Community Living, Inc. The Access to Care Supportive Housing program touches the heart of our charitable work in the communities we serve in both Nassau and Suffolk counties” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President Corporate Affairs at Bethpage Federal Credit

She has worked in the book industry and editorial area for eight years creating animation, editorial work and picture book spreads working both traditionally and digitally. Images of figures or figures in landscapes, in groups or in isolation, share a common feeling of significance. Wholly absorbed within themselves or the dialogue shared between one another, they wait for the unfolding of their private story.

primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences. Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases

objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork. Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. He earned his MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009. Lupe’s personal cosmogony guides him to explore experiences of Indigenous roots and American life and express them through painting and drawing. He is passionate about mentorship and teaches drawing and painting Yavapai College in Prescott, AZ, Boise State University, Boise, ID, Neumann University, Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia, PA and Southern

Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.” Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. She works in Pastel, Acrylic and Watercolor, showing her works in juried and invitational exhibits across Long Island. “Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape.” STAC, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. the Adult Services Desk beginning Tuesday, June 8. You must be 18 or older, with a valid Connetquot Public Library membership to register.
