Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and other officials announced Tuesday that the county’s half marathon has been designated as international and national championships for the intellectually disabled. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

As a culmination of their social studies unit on the medieval time period, James Wilson Young Middle School sixth-grade students participated in an interactive educational project. Dressed in traditional medieval clothing, the students spent the day engaging in cultural projects and celebrating their newly acquired knowledge on the era. During an educational

fair, they participated in a traditional coronation ceremony, which included the crowning of the James Wilson Young King and Queen. Music teacher Carl Leichthammer and sixth-grade teacher Kelly Petrosino were named to the royal positions, respectively. Following the coronation, the sixthgraders and their teachers paraded from the middle school to Sylvan Avenue Elementary School,

displaying their colorful class flags along the route. Prior to the fair, the students spent several weeks researching and compiling information on topics from the Middle Ages and completing research projects depicting their findings. On the day of the event, their projects were put on display for their peers and family members in attendance to review.

Barry Holman, chairman of the board for Athletes Without Limits, said, “Athletes Without Limits and INAS are honored and excited to award the Suffolk County Half Marathon the US National Championship for athletes with an intellectual disability. We know the Suffolk County government and community are going to put on a fantastic event that will showcase the drive, talents and achievements of runners with an intellectual disability from the US and internationally.’’ Dr. Catherine Caronia, Chair of Pediatrics, and Dr. Sarita Duchatelier, Director of Pediatric Neurology, both at Good Samaritan Hospital, praised the opportunity for intellectually disabled athletes to fully participate in the event. “We see the strength in children with special needs and to whom the words “I can’t” don’t exist,” Dr. Caronia said. “At Good Samaritan Health and Medical Center we care for many children with chronic needs including those who have chronic illnesses and often are labeled as medically fragile or medically complex. It’s that time of year again when high school students go to the mall to pick out tuxedos and dresses for that big day in June - the prom. Students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Centereach Academic Center (CAC) have their own special dance right in their school. They call it the Spring Fling. Principal Sue Goltz said, “We bring the students over to the Prom Dress Boutique at the Brookhaven Youth Bureau. There they can pick through a fine selection of gowns, handbags, and costume jewelry.”

The bureau helps young ladies’ dreams come true and the service is free and kept confidential. Staff at CAC brought in shirts and ties for the male students to wear. Female students received complimentary up-dos, make-up, and manicures at the Cosmetology Program on site at CAC while male students received shaves and haircuts. Teacher Luke Mahoney said, “The staff decorated the gym, food was donated, a staff member volunteered to be the DJ, and the cosmetology and barbering students put the skills they are learning to good use on

their friends.” Goltz said, “Some of our students will never have the opportunity to go to a prom. We want them to experience the fun of getting dressed up, socializing, dancing, and having their pictures taken to celebrate and mark this special day.” Social Worker Charlie Tedesco, a professional wedding photographer, brought in a backdrop and his photography equipment and set out to capture the male and female students having fun at the Spring Fling.

On May 21st, Supervisor Ed Romaine (left) joined members of the Bellport High School Football Team (left), the South Country Community Conference, the Hagerman Fire Department, and the South Country Ambulance to thank them for their participation in the Great Brookhaven Cleanup. The football team picked up roadside litter in Bellport and beatified the Southeast corner of

Beaver Dam Road and Station Road in Bellport by planting flowers and landscaping. The other groups helped by cleaning roadside litter in the areas of East Patchogue and North Bellport. More than 3300 people participated in the Great Brookhaven Cleanup at over 100 locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It was cosponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department

of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. The annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up is part of a national effort that draws nearly 2.5 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America who came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore.

Beaming with Pride

Hair clippers hummed and shorn locks fell while cheers, applause, and laughter echoed in the courtyard off the high school lunch hallway. The Annual St. Baldrick’s Day fundraising event, to raise awareness and money for Childhood Cancer research, was sponsored by the Sayville High School Student Government and was held on a beautiful sunny day with well more than fifty students participating. For the many brave students, willing to bow their full heads of hair beneath the barbers’ shears, this worthy cause was enough motivation. But for others, whose lives have been directly touched by cancer, their

involvement gave them a sense of pride. Sayville Senior Meg O’Connor, the honored guest of the day, was an ideal model of the St. Baldrick’s “look,” the result of her own chemo treatment for lymphoma, and enjoyed seeing her classmates show their support while she supported them for shaving their heads with her beaming smile. Among the students compelled to share their stories how cancer touched their lives were Payton Sweeney who remembered her brave mother with her gesture and Laura Eichele whose mom is a cancer survivor. While Payton and Laura had their heads shaved, many of the high school girls were more

comfortable having their long hair cut at the ponytail. In addition, Head of Security (pun intended) John Giambrone stepped up to the barber chair, as well as Mr. Blatter, who was the lucky” teacher chosen to get his head shaved, the result of a two-week lunchtime poll conducted by the Student Government. It was a day of high energy and high emotion that made everyone smile, some due to the sudden change from the haircut, and others through their tears of remembrance. Student Government advisors LynnAnn Perlin and Katherine Van Dorn were also all smiles Sayville High School raised $1,300 for Childhood Cancer research.

For Lincoln Avenue Kindergarten students in Sayville, lessons about recycling were more than just learning how to dispose of trash properly. The students in Mrs. Caltabiano, Mrs. Gonzalez and Mrs. LoCurto’s classes had been learning to reuse and repurpose the recyclables in creative ways. At the recent Lincoln Avenue Recycling Fair, families were invited to see how. With smiling faces, the students proudly demonstrated for their guests the colorful art or

the musical instruments they had fashioned out of plastic bottles and cans as well as cardboard, string, nails, and tape. Among the musical instruments created from discarded materials were assorted guitars, drums, maracas, and wind instruments like kazoos, and flutes, each as distinctive as the individual who designed it. The Fair was followed by Kindergarten Musical Review entitled directed by music teacher Christine Cirillo and performed by all three classes. “Look What I can Do” a

thoroughly entertaining reprisal in song sharing all the wonderful academic lessons they have learned so far this year. “My favorite part,” Mrs. Klein admitted, “was watching Mrs. Gonzalez’s class sing Green Jelly Bean. I’ve heard my daughter practice it the weeks leading up to it. It was nice to see the whole song performed. The kids sang beautifully.” Mrs. Gonzalez’s kindergarten students summed up the opinion shared by all the classes, “It was the best day ever!”

Caring About a Cure Chanting “Strike Out ALS” at the top of their lungs Sunrise Drive Elementary students stood along the bus loop waiting and waving their posters as high as their enthusiasm. Theirs might have been the last Sayville school in the Ride For Life Journey of Awareness that day, but they were certainly not the least. The entire Sunrise Drive community showed tremendous support when the Riders and volunteers rolled up. Greetings were exchanged, introductions made, and encouraging words about finding a cure were shared by the Riders. Ride For Life visited Sunrise Drive again this year to honor one of their own. Tom Coleman, a former Sunrise Drive graduate, had ridden in his wheelchair for the cause until he passed away several years ago. He was the uncle of current Sunrise Drive students Juliette and Beatrice. When Beatrice was a kindergarten student in Donna Morisie’s class, the Riders, who included the girls’ parents, had made a special visit to honor their uncle. Each year, the Ride For Life stops at Sunrise in his memory.

“This year, we formed a ALS Committee,” Mrs. Morisie explained. “MaryPat Holler, Tracey Pattilio, Keri Athan, Sharon Donnelly, and Christine Engelbert all helped me to organize the fundraising. I couldn’t have done it

The total raised by the Sunrise Drive’s bracelet sales exceeded $600. Since the first Ride For Life was launched in 1998 by Chris Pendergast, every year in May, during ALS Awareness Month, ALS patients, their caregivers, and some of their greatest supporters continue the tradition to make a special trek on foot and in wheelchairs through towns, villages and school districts, bringing awareness and raising funds for a cure. For many years, Sayville schools have been part of this journey to help loved ones battling the disease of ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). As part of her eloquent opening remarks, Sayville High School Assistant Principal Jillian Makris welcomed the Sayville students, their families and the staff to the Spring 2016 Breakfast of Champions by quoting Aristotle: “You are what you repeatedly do.” Mrs. Makris acknowledged how true these words were about the twenty-four honorees being recognized at the morning celebration. She praised the students for “repeatedly” demonstrating qualities of kindness, motivation, compassion, enthusiasm, diligence, and good citizenship beyond the classroom or athletic field or who achieved their personal best by striving to overcome major obstacles. Twice each year, Sayville High School teachers and

staff nominate exemplary students for their positive conduct that has made a difference and provided the essential components for a successful High School Community. This year’s Spring ceremony followed that tradition. High School faculty and staff members called upon each recipient one-by-one and shared their appreciation with personalized messages. After being recognized, each student shook hands with Principal Ron Hoffer and received a Breakfast of Champions certificate and plaque created with their portrait on a Wheaties™ Box background. In addition a special guest representing Senator Thomas Croci was on hand to congratulate the Champions. District Office Director Eric Hofmeister (father of Sayville Class of

2014 Valedictorian Liam) shook hands and awarded each student with an individualized certificate of recognition from Senator Croci. After, everyone enjoyed a satisfying breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, bagels, and pancakes along with assorted beverages, donated by West Lake, A Lovin’ Oven Property, which perfectly completed the heartwarming ceremony. Special thanks go to Assistant Principal Jillian Makris who organized and hosted the morning ceremony, the Sayville High School technology department for making the plaques, and Mr. Ari Kramer and his chamber students who provided the soothing musical ambiance.

When Sayville High School senior Jared Bergen presented his research project Geospatial Analysis of Cetacean Distribution and Habitat Utilization Related to Prey Density and Sea Surface Temperature off the Long Island Coastline, New York at the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair (Intel Division) in March, he won First Place in the Animal Sciences category. This win entitled Jared Bergen to compete in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair held in Phoenix, Arizona in early May. During that second competition against 1,760 students from 77 nations, Jared’s research project again earned high accolades, with Second Place in the Animal Sciences Division. Jared’s success is the result of his extremely hard work and thorough research skills, along with some propitious connections. First, Jared’s

research was based upon data donated by Coastal Research & Education Society of Long Island (CRESLI) and second, Jared learned GIS in the Stony Brook University ACE Course taught at the high school by his R.I.S.E. teacher Maria Brown. Mentored by both Mrs. Brown, who is also the Vice President of CRESLI and by Dr. Arthur Kopelman, President of CRESLI and long-time Sayville resident, Jared produced authentic research that provided support for extending the Georges Bank Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary westward to the Long Island coastline. Since 1981, they have been observed utilizing the Long Island coastal waters as a feeding area for their calves. These whales are currently listed as Endangered by IUCN according to a study conducted between 1989 and 2015. Jared also proposed that during the construction

phase for the proposed offshore wind turbines that measures be taken to mitigate disturbing the dolphins and whales that utilize this habitat during the summer months. This wonderful combination of source and skills led to Jared’s awardwinning results. At the Grand Awards Ceremony in Arizona, Jared was informed that in addition to a scholarship that he will receive, he will also have an asteroid named after him by NASA! Jared also received the Irwin Wissner Conservation Award, the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, and the Arizona State University Rob & Melani Walton Sustainability Solutions Initiatives Award at LISEF. In addition but separate from these scientific accolades, Jared has been named Sayville High School Valedictorian for the Class of 2016.

HOLBROOK CLEAN-UP - Once again the semi-annual Holbrook Clean Up, which is cosponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay along with the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce, was a huge success thanks to over 75 local students and volunteers. The Clean Up is always met with great energy and enthusiasm by the volunteers who donate their time to make the Holbrook community a better place to live and work. This event led to the removal of 100 bags of litter and debris along Patchogue-Holbrook Road, Main Street, Railroad Avenue, Furrows Road, and many side streets.

Scholarships Awarded On Thursday, May 19th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 100 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to three worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot

teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased Current CRTA President Peter Leis and the gathered retired Connetquot teachers, family and friends congratulated the recipients: Christian Hamlett, nominated by his teacherparents, Remie Arena, nominated by Julia Arena, and Alexandra Gordon, nominated by her father Joseph Maniaci, each received a check from the CRTA to help cover

expenses for their future education. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. The members of the CRTA congratulate Christian Hamlett, Remie Arena and Alexandra Gordon and with them continued success in their educational, and professional, pursuits!

Congratulations to Cherry Avenue’s Joseph Malossi, a fourth grader in Mrs. Kelly Cummings’ class, who won First Place in his age group at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair Competition. Joseph was awarded a medal for his intriguing project: “Turn the Bean Around.” In addition, Joseph brought home the Science Fair 2016 banner that

will put on permanent display at Cherry Avenue in Sayville School District. Joseph explained his winning science project... My science project is called “Turn the Bean Around.” The objective of my experiment is to find out how plants will grow when we spin them. We spun the bean plants for 21 days and charted our progress every week, and

we used a turntable to spin the plants. I found that after about 19 days The plants were starting to grow toward the center of the disk they were glued on to. And not only that, but we saw that along with the plants growing toward the center, the roots were growing outward. So in conclusion, the plants on the turntable grew according to centrifugal force instead of gravity.

Memory Lane sixth-graders have annually interviewed elders from the community who have spent many years on Fire Island and have seen it grow and change. Typically, the students develop interview questions prior to the elder resident visiting the school and the entire interview is captured on videotape by other students for future

individuals to enjoy. The Student-Elder Project, as it has become known, was the brainchild of BOCES instructor and Fire Island School collaborator Deborah Gerken, who continues to maintain and build on the program each year.

The “Our Community Salutes” Brookhaven Chapter held its second annual High School Enlistee Recognition Ceremony at Sunset Harbour on May 19th. More than 230 people attended to be the first to say thank you to 19 graduating seniors from five Brookhaven Town high schools for the service that they are about to undertake. The high schools represented were William Floyd, PatchogueMedford, Bellport, Center Moriches and Longwood. “It was an absolute honor to be part of the second annual ‘Our Community Salutes’ Brookhaven Town event to thank and recognize the brave young men and women who will serve and protect our country in the Armed forces after graduation,” said Robert Vecchio, President, William Floyd Board of Education and Cochair of Our Community Salutes Brookhaven Town. Guest speakers for the evening included New York State Senator (3rd District) and U.S. Navy Commander (Reserves) Tom Croci and U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major Michele S. Jones (the ninth person to achieve this rank and the first woman), who also served as a member of the Senior Executive Service under President Obama from 2009-2012. Senator Croci presented the first Tom and Jo-Ann Croci Foundation Enlistee Scholarship to William Floyd High School senior, Scott Amato, who will serve in the United States Marine Corps. The second General

Colin L. Powell Service award was given to William Floyd High School Naval Science Instructor Senior Chief Dwight Becherer. The award is in recognition for outstanding service and commitment to students who enlist in the military after graduation. Senior Naval Science Instructor Commander Jay Tweed (USN/RET.) received the inaugural award last year. Congratulations to all the student enlistees and their families. The Brookhaven Chapter of Our Community Salutes and the William Floyd School District is deeply grateful for their upcoming service. In addition to receiving an “Our Community Salutes” Challenge Coin, the honorees received certificates, proclamations, flags and more as thanks for their upcoming service. Taking Steps Rebecca from Mineola is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Rebecca is living with Crohn’s diseases which combined with ulcerative colitis, are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. In 2011, as a senior in high school Rebecca started to develop severe abdominal pain in her lower right side. After her first colonoscopy, Rebecca woke up to, “You have Crohn’s Disease... there are support groups for what you’re going through.” What she thought would be a quick fix turned into a life

Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra Summer Camps have partnered to offer a variety of exciting, fun educational opportunities for young people in grades 6-11 this summer.
