the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

septic shock last May. “I was 30 minutes away from dying,” said Mr. Gendron. “I’m walking to say thank you to the doctors who saved my life and to raise money so other kids can receive the same care and go on to have a happy life.” Mr. Gendron was born with a rare blood disease, known as Auto Immune Lympho Proliferative Syndrome (ALPS), which is defined by a low platelet count. Cohen Children’s previously treated his preexisting condition. But one morning last May, he woke up very ill

and was rushed to Cohen, where he passed out in the elevator upon arrival. Medical staff quickly diagnosed Mr. Gendron and he recovered after five weeks of treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. “No matter how bad it got, I knew Matthew was in the best hands and I never once doubted that they would save my son,” said his mother, Holly Gendron. “We are raising money so that other families can receive the support and care my family was given.”

More than 7,000 participants helped raise a record $635,000 at four Northwell Health Walks across Long Island, Westchester and Staten Island on Sunday. From the Jones Beach boardwalk in Wantagh to Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, supporters laced up to support women and children’s health initiatives, and cardiac and cancer care. Mr. and Mrs. Met greeted walkers at the Jones Beach 5K while Zumba instructors warmed up the crowd at Midland Beach in Staten Island, part of a festive day with a serious goal: Funds go to several area hospitals, with the Jones Beach walk benefiting Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. “This day is about empowering women and their families and helping them on the path to wellness,” said Stacey E. Rosen, MD, vice president of women’s health at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. “The support we received – both in turnout and through donation – at all four venues is absolutely fantastic. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is one of the beneficiaries and we are committed to the health of women of all ages through clinical programs, education, research and community partnerships.” Since its inception, the Northwell Health Walk has raised nearly $3.3 million. Donations will be collected through June 9th. It will also save lives. Matthew Gendron is proof. The Bayport-Blue Point School District congratulates BayportBlue Point High School psychologist Dayna Russo for being recognized by Sen. Phil Boyle as a “Teacher of Excellence” at his second annual Teacher of Excellence Awards

Ceremony held at the Bay Shore Fire Department. Ms. Russo was chosen for this award based on her radiant personality and her ability to connect with students to ensure that they feel safe and comfortable to be who they are, to name a few. Additionally,

Ms. Russo is credited for establishing the BayportBlue Point High School Peer Education Program, a very successful initiative which trains and educates students to be leaders in bullying prevention, impacting hundreds of students every school year.

On Thursday, May 18th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held it’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Over 100 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to four worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. Many of the retirees traveled from outside the area, several from the Sunshine State! Among the retirees was former Peconic Street JHS Principal, and later Connetquot Schools Superintendent, Mr. John Maloney. The CRTA Scholarships

are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased over the years. CRTA President Peter Leis and the gathered retired Connetquot teachers, family and friends congratulated the recipients: Germaine Harbaugh, nominated by her grandmother Germaine Ortiz, Carly Dobert, nominated by her grandmother Maureen Dobert, Jessica Kamen, nominated by her grandmother Laurie

Schwartz and Dylan Saposnick, nominated by his grandmother Sybil Saposnick. Each student received a check in the amount of $1,000 to help them finance their college educations. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. The members of the CRTA congratulate Germaine Horbaugh, Carly Dobert, Jessica Kamen and Dylan Saposnick and wish them continued success in their educational, and professional, pursuits!

Allergy Awareness Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School were recently visited by foodallergy educator Kyle Dine for a fun and informative presentation about food allergy awareness and prevention. Mr. Dine’s program consisted of a lively

presentation involving puppets to teach students and parents about food allergies and lifethreatening reactions to certain foods. Throughout the duration of his presentation, he spent time interacting with students as they related their own personal experiences with allergies and medications

that are used to relieve the effects of some foods and beverages. Students and staff members alike left the assembly having learned more about allergy awareness, the reason why students should not share lunches, and how to maintain an allergy-safe school.

The Connetquot Central School District recently celebrated its first Relay for Life event, bringing together district staff, students and community members to rally together and raise funds for cancer research. The night’s events consisted of speeches of encouragement and inspiration from

Connetquot High School psychologist and event coordinator Courtney Huguenin, current students Marina Duszak and Kevin Ferrara, as well as an emotional survivor lap recognizing those who have beaten their disease and a luminary ceremony to honor those still fighting and those no longer with

Research Symposium On Tuesday, May 16th, St. John the Baptist DHS held its second annual GENESIS Science Research Symposium. Seven St. John’s seniors presented the results of the research projects that they have been working on for the past year. They were: Maria AvilaFranklin of Nesconset with her project, An Educational Case Study: The Impact of Motivation on Latinas of Low Socioeconomic Status in the Pursuit of Higher Education, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack with his project, Affecting Behavior: The Effect of Positive Reinforcement and Punishment on Executive Function in High School Students, Nicole Messina of Selden, who studied Sleep and Cognitive Functioning: The Effect of Sleep Time on Short-Term Working Memory, Maureen Petica of Massapequa who studied

The Effect of Technology Use on Social Anxiety in High School Students, Marisa Pollock of Middle Island with her project The Effect of Teaching Style on Sport Skill Acquisition, Julial Romanelli of Smithtown with her study The Effect of Genre of Music on Speed of Cognitive Processing and Jennie Rostkowski of Oakdale with her project The Effect of Class Placement on the Big Fish-Little Pond Effect in High School Students. In addition to the seven presenters, seven juniors displayed the results of their projects and answered questions during a question and answer segment that was held during the program. program at the end of their freshman year. Selected students are enrolled in the first level of GENESIS which teaches them how to conduct scholarly research in Science. As students’ progress, they choose a topic that they are interested in researching and are given ownership of that project. Mr. Ken Bohman, a science teacher at St. John the Baptist and Director of the GENESIS program, was thrilled to see the results of this year’s hard work. He stated “I am constantly amazed at what our St. John the Baptist students can achieve when given resources and opportunity. Can you imagine a terrarium filled with flowers, plants, and bugs, made solely of nuts, bolts, screws, and washers? Daniel Kruse, an adult student in the Welding Program at the Academy at Milliken Technical Center can. Daniel is a scrap metal sculptor from Blue Point. He became very interested in welding after watching a film his science teacher showed in class at his home school of Bayport-Blue Point UFSD. “I was intrigued by the

I can see exactly where the nuts and bolts will go and then it literally comes together when I weld the steel.” Daniel is learning electric ARC, TIG, MIG, and Plasma ARC welding techniques in the classroom and builds ventilation frames for soundproof rooms at his internship. Welding Teacher John Akers said, “Dan is connecting what he’s learning in the classroom with what he’s learning at his internship at Universal Shield and applying it to create his sculptures.” A University of Southern California Lacrosse player saw Daniel’s work on Instagram and commissioned him to create a flower sculpture. He’s created turtles, scorpions, fish, squirrels, and an assortment of bugs and flowers. In June, Daniel is scheduled to graduate from the Welding Program with a two-year certificate. He hopes the internship will turn into a full-time job and his dream sculpture of a life-sized terrarium filled with flowers, plants, and bugs, made solely of nuts, bolts, screws, and washers will become a reality.

The “Spray and Sun” sunscreen spray booth was named second runner-up. The district congratulates all student participants for their fantastic projects.

Gibson, a 1966 graduate of Suffolk, presented the college, pictured, with artifacts from his voyages aboard the space shuttle including a Suffolk pennant he carried into space. “Commander Gibson was impressed by our

STEM program and the national recognition we received with the award of more than $2.6 million in grant funding in the past decade, and that our STEM scholars have achieved paid research internships in arenas as varied as NASA, in 6 of the 11 federal laboratories around the nation, and also at the Smithsonian Institute,” said President McKay. “Commander Gibson spoke passionately about his academic and career pathway - all , in his words, influenced by his start in engineering science at Suffolk County Community College,” said Suffolk County Community College
