Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

Described by their High School teachers, staff and peers as “kind, compassionate, friendly, and hardworking,” twenty Sayville student nominees were honored at the 2018 Spring Breakfast of Champions ceremony. “…in today’s society we are often judged or valued based upon material possessions or on wealth, but character is …. about who you are.” Extolling the virtues of the Spring Breakfast of Champions recipients, High School Assistant Principal Jillian Makris spoke eloquently in her opening statement. “They are role models,” Mrs. Makris continued who “through their positive conduct have made a difference in the lives of others and provided the essential components for a successful High School Community.” In addition to recognizing the nominees, Mrs. Makris praised the parents for their positive influence and support. During the presentation the nominees were called up by the teachers who nominated them and presented with touching personalized statements, along with certificates and Breakfast of Champions plaques-- their portraits on a Wheaties Box background created by Tech teachers Cross and Vogel. After all the honorees were recognized, the

moving ceremony ended with a tasty breakfast of scrambled eggs, scrambled eggs’ n cheese, French Toast, pancakes, bacon, sausage patties, fresh fruit bowl, assorted bagels and rolls that were served up with a smile by the Sayville Food Service. And special thanks go to the members of the Sayville String Quartet and Mr. Ari Kramer for the lovely musical interludes. with Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

In July 2010, the Dignity for All Students Act was signed into law to combat bias-based bullying, discrimination and harassment in public schools, and to ensure the right of every public school student to learn in a safe, welcoming, and caring environment. Eastern Suffolk BOCES, the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task Force, and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association joined together and have been working in collaboration to ensure the guidelines and goals established by DASA are being effectively implemented in public schools throughout Suffolk County. One of their joint initiatives was to facilitate

a forum, which coincided with the fifth anniversary of the introduction of DASA, where Suffolk County school districts’ Dignity Act coordinators and district DASA coordinators could share their best practices in the areas of disseminating information to staff, students, and parents; the training of staff and students; prevention and response to events; and response to violations. Through an open dialogue, forum attendees shared and received valuable insight into effective practices, and the tools to enhance their own processes. “We believe that the best product is created through collaboration, and we are grateful to the Suffolk County InterFaith Anti-Bias Task

Force for sponsoring a forum where the best thinkers from Suffolk County came together,” said Suffolk County School Superintendents Association President Lars Clemensen. “From this collaboration was born a resource guide of best practices in the county for making sure students are free from bullying, harassment, and discrimination.” While there is much good work going on in schools across Suffolk County in compliance with DASA, there is always more that can be done and shared. As an outgrowth of this successful forum, a DASA resource guide, which is a compilation of best practices utilized in Suffolk County public

schools for the past five years, was created. This comprehensive resource guide, which is being shared with all Suffolk County school districts, will serve as an informative and valuable tool to support and enhance the work being done to implement DASA and protect the rights of all children attending public schools. “The Dignity for All Students Act defines the necessary components to ensure that students are treated with dignity within the school walls and at school events,” said ESBOCES Chief Operating Officer Julie Davis Lutz, Ph.D. “It is our hope that this resource guide and the ongoing work that we do with students and staff

ensure that this happens in all aspects of their lives, both within and beyond the school doors.” “This resource guide is a collaboration between the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission, the Suffolk County Anti-Bias Task Force, Eastern Suffolk BOCES and the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association,” said Suffolk County Human Rights Commission Chairman Rabbi Steven Moss. “As acts of bullying occur every day in schools, it is vital that schools provide a safe haven for those who have been bullied, a procedure to report these incidents, and then a method to deal with them by those in authority. This useful resource guide will assist those school

personnel who want to understand how they can continue and improve their implementation of DASA for the sake of their students. The Computer Graphic Arts students from the Islip Career Center in Oakdale recently created and adhered vinyl decals bearing positive messages to the risers of a staircase at the Sonderling High School in the Brentwood school district. Islip Career Center (ICC) is an Eastern

Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special education needs. The skills they obtain may help them to acquire entry-level employment in certain industries. The decals featured such messages as, “Life

is Beautiful,” “I am Courageous,” and “I am Calm, Relaxed and Peaceful.” ICC Computer Graphic Arts students first visited Sonderling last year to decorate a different staircase with similar messages of encouragement. The project soon became a hit among students and staff, and ICC students returned for a second year to work their magic on another staircase. Said ESBOCES Teacher Assistant Jeffrey Mclary who accompanied the students to the Brentwood district, “This undertaking enabled our students to support fellow students in another high school. It is also a perfect example of projectbased learning, which is a hands-on exercise that gives students real-world experiences in the fields they are studying. This is a specialty of ESBOCES.”

The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department recently visited Islip Career Center to talk about the dangerous effects of driving while impaired. Students learned about the legal ramifications of driving while under the influence and wore hightech impairment goggles to better understand how alcohol diminishes motor skills and judgement. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with

special education needs. The skills they obtain may help them to acquire entry-level employment in certain industries. To make students fully understand the impact of driving while impaired, the sheriff talked to students about the direct and indirect consequences of their actions. These included fines and attorney fees, losing their driver’s license, and the inconvenience and embarrassment of taking a bicycle to work and on dates.

State-of-the-art impairment goggles allowed students to experience firsthand the difficulty involved with operating a pedal-powered cart, walking in tandem with a partner through a short course outlined in cones, and even attempting to high five a friend. “The effects of the goggles never cease to amaze participating students and onlookers, which is exactly what we want with an exercise such as this,” said ESBOCES Social Worker Amy Roland-Scott.

not decided which college to attend, plans to study economics and politics following graduation. “Sachem has so many special teachers who have helped me choose my career path,” Tharini said. “Their passion in the careers they have chosen inspire me.” Tim, this year’s salutatorian, has a longstanding commitment to academic achievement that earned him an unweighted grade point average of 98.4083. Selecting a collection of challenging upper-level classes, he is enrolled in Advanced Placement computer science, government and politics, literature, physics I and statistics. In addition to his challenging course schedule, Tim is a member of the English, Math, National and Tri-M honor societies. He plays violin in the string ensemble and has been a yearly participant in New York State School Music Association festivals. Beyond the classroom, Tim is a member of the varsity tennis and golf teams and has served as the captain of the tennis team since 10th grade. Tim plans to attend Georgetown University

captain for two seasons. In addition, Abigail is a four-year member of the winter track team and a two-year member of the spring track team where she was a captain this year. Continuously challenging herself academically, she is enrolled in a number of Advanced Placement classes, including calculus, chemistry, government and politics, English, psychology and Spanish. Abigail will be attending Binghamton University to study biomedical engineering this fall. “A high school experience is what you make of it,” Abigail said. “Sachem has provided me every opportunity to make my dreams come true.” Salutatorian Kaylyn also has an impressive academic résumé. KEEP ISLIP CLEAN - Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently met with Keep Islip Clean (KIC) representatives, Southside Hospital volunteers, and Northwell Health’s Vice President of Community Relations, Eddie Fraser, for the 5th annual Community Cleanup. The initiative is one of the many community cleanup projects KIC conducts throughout the year, and comes in honor of Earth Day 2018. Volunteers from KIC and Southside Hospital were out in force, removing garbage from the heavily littered area along Spur Drive South, from Saxon Avenue to Fifth Avenue, in Bay Shore. Over 65 bags of garbage were collected in total.

Abigail Bandl and Kaylyn Spotton are Sachem High School North Class of 2018’s valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. The two well-rounded student standouts have shown a relentless commitment to academic excellence during their four years of high school. Among countless academic accolades, valedictorian Abigail is the president of the National Honor Society and an active participant in the Foreign Language, History, Math, Science and Tri-M honor societies. She has played trombone for nine years and has been a member of the varsity field hockey team for three years, serving as a team

She will continue her academic journey at the Stevens Institute of Technology this fall, where she will study chemical biology. “During my time at Sachem, I have made so many great relationships with my teachers,” Kaylyn said. “I have been able to learn so much from their professional experiences.” The two Sachem standouts will receive their diplomas during the commencement ceremony on June 22nd.

Bayport brothers Robby and Billy Zoller were lauded as local heroes by Angie Carpenter, Islip Town Supervisor, Councilwoman, Mary Kate Mullen, and members of the Islip Town Board recently. The brothers responded to a neighbor’s house fire in the wee hours of the morning, Friday, May 4th, saving the lives of a mother, her two children and the family dog. Suzi Stenzinger and her family had returned from listening to her 9-year-old daughter Ally sing in the school concert Thursday night, and enjoyed a family barbecue on the back deck before going to

bed that evening. While the family slept, a fire was brewing on the rear deck near the barbecue, and the flames were steadily growing under a second floor bedroom. Robby Zoller could see the flames rising as high as the roof on the back of Suzi’s house from his house next door. He quickly ran to get his mother, and then his 17 year-old brother Billy-a junior firefighter with the Bayport Fire Department. The two brothers scaled the 5 ft. stockade fence that separated the two houses and banged on the bedroom window yelling that the house was on fire and that the family needed to get

out immediately. Suzi and her children, including the family dog, made it out of the house safely. Twentyfive fire fighters from the Bayport Fire Department arrived within minutes to extinguish what was left of the blaze. “Thanks to the quickthinking actions of these fine young men from Bayport, the Stenzinger family is alive today,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter. The Supervisor and members of the Town Board presented each brother with a citation for their heroic efforts.

Winning Recipes During a display of culinary expertise three teams of chefs from Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District shared their award-winning recipes with cooking managers from each of the district’s 15 buildings. The three teams of students who placed at the recent eighth annual Junior Iron Chef competition, held at Whole Foods Market in Lake Grove, prepared the original dishes they created. Each delicious recipe, which was composed of all USDA-approved, cafeteriaready ingredients and were served with careful

presentation, were then taste tested by cooking managers from across the district. Teams worked in unison as they navigated the Seneca cafeteria kitchen for the first time while they managed their one-hour cook time with precision. The first-place team, Team Golden Girls, plated their Jardin Burrito filled with eggs, guacamole, Monterey jack cheese, peppers, onions, black beans and corn that was paired with a delicious mango salsa. The third-place team, the Greek Goddesses, presented their Greek omelet, coined Demeter’s Dish, that was filled with potatoes and

paired with tzatziki sauce, and the fourth-place team, the Slice and Dicers, served their savory breakfast quesadilla. “Today was incredible,” District Chairperson for Family and Consumer Science Mary Louise Faller said. “We were able to give back to our food service staff by preparing a few of our delicious dishes and the students got to show off their culinary techniques.” The event allowed food service staff to observe each step of the cooking process and gather ideas to bring back to their own buildings to incorporate into the lunch menu.
