The show is also an opportunity for high school students to showcase their best pieces of artwork and to view the
art of high school peers from neighboring districts. E-CIGARETTE DANGER - Students enrolled in health classes at Bayport-Blue Point High School were recently given valuable information pertaining to the many dangers of using electronics nicotine delivery systems with assistance from Suffolk County Office of Health Education Representative Bonnie Anderson. During her presentation, Mrs. Anderson spoke to the students about why vaping is such a harmful habit, as it is all too often marketed as being fairly safe and is highly capable of drawing in young consumers with the multitude of flavors available. The Connetquot Central School District is proud to announce that Connetquot High School earth science and astronomy teacher Stephanie Burns was selected as the 2019 Outstanding High School Science Teacher by the Suffolk Section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. In order to be selected for this prestigious award, Ms. Burns was recommended by Connetquot Central School District Secondary STEM Chairperson Dr. Mary Loesing, and was provided with a number of upstanding letters of recommendation from colleagues and students’ parents alike. During her 14-year career within the Connetquot Central School District, Ms. Burns has brought engaging and interesting lessons into her classroom setting, such as creating authentic earth science lab investigations, and utilizing pictures of impact craters which were captured by the International Space Station. “Ms. Burns is a warm and caring educator who wants her students to succeed, and does everything she can to engage them in the study of science,” said Dr. Loesing. “Both myself and the district are very proud of Ms. Burns and congratulate her on this well-deserved award.” For her recognition, Ms. Burns will be receiving a plaque signifying her accomplishment during an awards dinner being held at Villa Lombardi’s of Holbrook on May 29.

Carolyn Slovensky was the winner of the prestigious Women Sharing Art, Inc. Scholarship, which is given to a graduating female senior who plans on pursuing art education at the college level. the students were asked what the three branches of government consisted of, to which they correctly answered by stating judicial, legislative and executive. During the course of his visit, students learned of the multistep process which is required to pass laws, and took part in a fun activity – which
choice they would prefer: no school on Friday or no homework during the week. Prior to making their decision, the students debated on important pros and cons of both sides, and ultimately came to a respectful conclusion that they would prefer there be no homework issued, alongside a full, five-day week of school.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). King is a Brown Dun-colored, 13year old Norwegian Fjord and one of Pal-O-Mine’s herd of equine teachers. “Our horses are the heartbeat of our equine programs,” said Pal-OMine Equestrian CEO Lisa
Gatti. “They are attuned to the feelings of the student, nonjudgmental and serve to empower individuals whether working through the challenges of a disability, a traumatic stress, abuse or other life circumstances where equine therapy has proven to be one of the most effective learning programs. The Michael Scotto Memorial Foundation’s generous contribution will go toward feeding and caring for King. "THE DONUT FIX" During an assembly with “The Donut Fix” author Jessie Janowitz, Frank P. Long Intermediate School students in the South Country Central School District learned that there are three important elements to writing a story or book: spark, the question of what if? and revision. The popular author, whose second book “The Donut
King” was released on May 14, read the first two pages of “The Donut Fix,” shared her inspiration for the story and led the students through exercises to excite them about the writing process. She also shared her preferences for stories with lots of character and dialogue and referenced several books that meet that description. Students brought their
own journals to write down notes and to record their own “sparks.” Students who ordered Ms. Janowitz’s book also had the opportunity to meet the author and have their book signed. Ms. Janowitz’s visit not only excited the students, many of whom have read “The Donut Fix,” but encouraged them to pursue their own writing.
