onnetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School third and fourth grade students recently participated in a courtyard garden cleanup in the school. In honor of Earth Day, students picked up leaves and pulled weeds from the ground to prepare it for planting vegetable seeds and flower bulbs. The children and staff members involved are anxious to visit the courtyard garden once their plants and flowers bloom!

Arts In The Plaza
Come join us in our fourth season of fun at Long Beach Arts in the Plaza! Continuing to provide cultural enrichment and enjoyment in Long Beach, we are the community’s inspiring arts and music marketplace! This weekly event features paintings, photography, jewelry, and many other hand crafted original works that our talented artists will be displaying and selling. New to this season is the “Kids Art Station” from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and our
“High Noon Spotlight” which features cultural performances, art demos, and workshops. Live music performed in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. adds to an already fun and energetic atmosphere, from solo acoustic performances to bands from around the island. The Farmers Market also shares the plaza with us, which can only enhance the experience for everyone! Arts in the Plaza takes place on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kennedy
Plaza in Long Beach. The season begins May 25th and extends through October 26th. Kennedy Plaza is located just west of the LIRR and Long Beach bus terminal near City Hall. Arts in the Plaza is sponsored by the City of Long Beach in association with West End Arts Visual Artists Guild, the Long Beach Art League, and Artists in Partnership. Mid-Island Y Golf Outing The Mid-Island Y Jewish Community Center is pleased to honor Al Berg, Co-Founder, Marchon Eyewear, Inc. and Rick Lewis, CEO, Mid-island Y JCC, at its 12th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, June 3rd at Pine Hollow Country Club in East Norwich. Al Berg is the strategic advisor to the CEO of Vision Service Plan (VSP) and is an investor and philanthropist. He is the cofounder, former President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Marchon Eyewear, Inc, one of the world’s largest eyeglass and sunglass manufacturers and distributors.
Rick Lewis is the Chief Executive Officer for the MidIsland Y JCC and joins them with nearly 30 years of experience and a strong business and programming background. Rick previously held the position of Associate Executive Director at the Samuel Field Y in Little Neck, NY. During his time there, Rick was part of the team that grew the agency from a $6 million organization with three sites in Queens to an over $20 million organization with programs operating at over 30 sites in New York and a sleep away camp in Poyntelle, PA. Proceeds from the golf
outing will enable the JCC to provide vital social, recreational and cultural activities for all ages of the community. The event features 18 holes of golf in a beautiful county club setting, breakfast, lunch and dinner, networking opportunities, exciting contests and giveaways, raffles and more. Days To Remember By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This is the time to remember Cause it will not last forever These are the days To hold on to Cause we won’t Although we’ll want to Tis the season for proms and pictures and graduations, for final summer vacations with friends and future college and career plans … and even though I am well past that point in my life, this time of year always makes me a bit nostalgic. As I watch students I taught in dancing for years and younger siblings of friends set off on these great adventures,
I can’t help but think back to when it was all fresh and new to me (and feel just a little old!). Upon reflection, I think the one regret most people share is that we – as a collective class – did not take the time to savor the moments quite as much as we would have liked to. Sure, there are pictures and newspaper clippings and all sorts of mementos … but the treasured memories – those are the priceless artifacts that mean the most. Unfortunately, they also tend to fade over time. Me, I still look at my yearbook from time to time, smiling at all the nice compliments and inside jokes which fill the pages from friends, family and faculty members. I still carry a walletsized picture from my prom at Windows On The World – yes, I
still carry photos in my wallet – which has obviously become even more priceless to me given the events which transpired on September 11th. Did I enjoy every minute while it was happening? Somewhat, but probably not to the degree I should have. Unfortunately, we were all consumed with college and scholarship applications, finals and AP exams, term papers and preparing for graduation. The actual experience – the only part which truly matters in the long run – tended to get lost in the shuffle. So to this year’s graduates … try, really try, to slow down, stop and savor … These are the days to remember. These are the moments to treasure.

The Scleroderma Foundation / Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will be holding its 10th Annual Long Island Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Walk at Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 2nd. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders, Barbara Geller, Denise Gesuale, and Dawn Selg, along with patients, families and friends as they gather for an encouraging event that honors scleroderma survivors and lifts the spirits of those who support them. Food, raffles, entertainment and an ideal setting make this an outstanding experience. Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks. S c l e r o d e r m a Tr i S t a t e . org before the event. The registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5
to 15, and children under 5 years are free. Registration forms and donations can also be mailed to the TriState office to complete your event registration. Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older; and $5 for children ages 5 to 15; children younger than 5 are free. All pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt. Awards are given to the individual and team that raise the most money. The Wantagh Park walk helps build awareness and raise funds for contending with this devastating disease. The walk is part of a larger national drive to spread the word about scleroderma throughout the month of June. Efforts include the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma walks a at numerous locations across the United States; development of a new scleroderma awareness month Website, www.

The Scleroderma Foundation has joined the Federation of European Scleroderma Associations (FESCA), and other international scleroderma organizations in recognizing June 29th as World Scleroderma Awareness Day. On May 8th, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr., Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, had the opportunity to honor the Professional Nurses Association of Suffolk County at an event honoring nurses from throughout Suffolk County, including nurses working for Suffolk County. Founded in 1987
by Margaret Hardie, Clara Hofmann and a group of registered nurses who believed a collective approach to professional issues, with the community spirit inherent in the nursing profession, would enable Suffolk County to address concerns more effectively and compassionately. “I would like to thank President Barbara
Carlstrom, RN, Presidentelect Frances LaFauci, RN, Treasurer Charlotte Worthington, RN and Secretary Linda O’Brien, RN for hosting me at the event. It was my privilege to thank the Nurses of Suffolk County on the wonderful work they have done and will continue to do,” said Legislator Kennedy.
The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Academy Street PTA with a Bike Rodeo on Saturday May 18th in celebration of Bike Safety Month. Sheriff’s Office staff helped run this Safety Clinic to teach kids the real world skills they need to ride a bicycle safely.
Lessons such as the ABC’s of bicycle maintenance, where to ride on the road, how to use hand signals, how to safely cross an intersection, and how to properly wear a bicycle helmet were demonstrated and discussed by Sheriff’s Deputies. Participants tested

Greeted by their families, supporters and a shining display of 6,000 pinwheels, Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) patient and advocate, and other ALS patients, rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus for the annual Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, marking the halfway point of the ride from Southold to Manhattan, which concluded May 18th. The pinwheels represented the American lives lost each year to ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. During the ceremony, Pendergast presented a check on behalf of the Ride for Life for $150,000 to Stony Brook University to support ALS research at Stony Brook Medicine and the Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Started in 1998 by Pendergast, the Ride for Life organization raises awareness and funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The Ride has raised more than $4.5 million for ALS research since its inception. Each year Stony Brook receives a portion of the Ride’s proceeds to fund research. Senior leadership from Stony Brook Medicine gave Pendergast a gift – a genuine Louisville Slugger baseball bat engraved with the words: “SBU and the Ride for Life ‘Strike out ALS’.” The gift symbolizes Pendergast’s advocacy, courage, endurance and vision in the cause to find a cure for ALS.

On Monday, June 17th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 25th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Reflecting the theme, “Around The World And Then Back Home,” the Lincoln Avenue elementary school Choral Concert mingled beautiful voices with patriotic pride. Held in the Sayville Middle School, all three choruses delighted the full auditorium with their performances. In the finale, directed by Lincoln Avenue Music teacher Christine Cirillo,
veterans of the armed services were honored. “What a better way to come back home, than to celebrate those who have fought for our freedom,” stated Mrs. Cirillo. Cued by the students’ enthusiastic voices, members of Sayville’s American Legion SmithWever Post 651 located on Foster Avenue, proudly marched the flag of each division of the armed
forces onto the stage as the children sang the theme songs from each branch. The veterans present within the audience received applause and recognition for their dedication to service and our freedom. By the end of the concert, the moving musical performances and the veterans received a standing ovation!
Science Teacher Honored During the 55th Commencement Exercises at Long Island University, Sayville High School Science Research teacher Maria Brown was honored with the Long Island Secondary School Teacher of the Year award for her extraordinary service to Sayville High school and the science community. Ms. Brown was being recognized for her reputation as a passionate educator whose hands-on, creative methods captivate students and inspire them to enter the fields of science and technology. Ms. Brown began teaching science at Sayville High School in 1999. During her tenure, she has implemented innovative programs that promote and develop interest in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines. Ms. Brown established the STEM Institute for high school students; fieldoriented environmental science courses that are aligned with the AP Environmental Science College Board curriculum; enrichment studies abroad in Costa Rica and the Peruvian Amazon for AP students; and a two-year inclusion earth science
program. She also serves as the adviser to Students Working for Enhanced Environmental Projection. In addition, Ms. Brown developed a Research in Science and Education (RISE) program that encourages high school students to explore science as a process as they work on independent research projects and collaborate with professionals at Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Under her tutelage, some of her students have been named finalists and semifinalists in prestigious competitions, including the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology and the Intel Science Talent Search. Her expertise and energy isn’t limited to working with students in the high school. She works with younger students in the district through SOAR, an elementary aeronautical engineering program, where gifted and talented fourth- and fifth-grade science and math students team up with mentors in the fields of aerospace and flight, including pilots as well as engineers from NASA, to build complex, high-performance paper airplanes. The
program culminates in a competition, widely attended by members of the community. As the adviser to the Explorer’s Club, she mentors middle school students as they research many different branches of science, through the exploration of local resources. In the words of Sayville High School principal Ronald Hoffer, “All students who come into contact with Ms. Brown respond to her caring, enthusiastic approach. She is the epitome of a dedicated, caring master teacher.” A guest lecturer at Stony Brook University and a professional wetland scientist, she has presented at national conferences, published papers in renowned journals and is a member of numerous professional affiliations. In honor of Earth Day, students picked up leaves and pulled weeds from the ground to prepare it for planting vegetable seeds and flower bulbs. The children all made recycled projects displayed them in their classrooms for the parents who were invited to see. Then the families moved on to the cafeteria where all the kindergarteners put on a musical revue called ‘Look What I Can Do!’ It was an exciting culmination of many units of study for everyone!”
SPRING FLING SEASON - Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Learning Center recently welcomed the warm weather with its annual Spring Fling Celebration. The students traveled todifferent classrooms in small groups where they engaged in a wide variety of activities. Students planted seeds, performed in a play, made tie-dye butterflies and danced along to songs about spring. The students also created mud pies with chocolate pudding crusted cookies and gummy worms. The fun filled day concluded with an obstacle course where students navigated around creepy crawlers.

If one really thinks about it, every day should be Earth Day! In Lincoln Avenue, the Sayville Kindergarten and PALS students were really thinking hard along these lines when they joined forces on an ambitious interdisciplinary project in preparation for Earth Day. Beginning with inspiring poetry to introduce the idea of recycling, the students learned from literature about both Earth Day and recycling. Putting thoughts into practice, the Kindergarten and PALS classes explored ways to apply helpful behaviors in all aspects of living and learning. “We graphed how many people recycle at home” Kindergarten teacher Gina LoCurto explained, “and brainstormed ways we can help the earth by reducing, reusing, and recycling at home and at school. College Scholarships Awarded On May 16th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held it’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 100 retired Connetquot School District educators joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to two worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District of Islip. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA Secretary Trudi Manley, “… over the years, thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of the scholarships has increased.” This year the CRTA Scholarship Committee provided $1,000 grants to Perri Goldstein and Grant Costa to be used for the upcoming school year. Retiring CRTA President Marilyn Aitken, along with newly elected president Peter Leis, congratulated this year’s scholarship winners, both of whom are outstanding high school seniors. Grant Costa will be attending Duke University in the Fall studying physics. He is a National Merit
Commended student. He has developed two original math theorems related to Number Theory and Cryptology. He performed statistical analysis on original cardiac research data and was cited for his work in the Journal of Interventional Cardiology. He was awarded Highest Honor (gold) at the Long Island Math Fair, and recognized at the State DECA Business Leadership competition. He has received the Clarkson Book Award and is a member of the National Honor Society and President of the Italian Honor Society. Grant is also a certified lifeguard and swim instructor. He has started a business - Grant’s Guard & Swim - which teaches swimming and provides lifeguard services for parties. He plans to start a program one afternoon per week to provide free swim instruction to underprivileged or special needs children while in college. Grant is the grandson of long time Connetquot teacher Julia Arena. Perri Goldstein will be attending the University of Richmond in Virginia and her interests are in science and medicine. She interned for two summers at Mount Sinai Medical Center in the Developmental and Regenerative Biology Department. Her research
centered on new methods of treatment for liver disease utilizing human embryonic stem cells. Previously she spent a summer in Ecuador with a Type 1 Diabetes education and outreach program. She also traveled to Cuba with a group distributing supplies to the needy. Perri was a member of her varsity swim & diving team and the varsity ski team. She is a competitive gymnast and also teaches gymnastics to 5 and 6 year olds during the week. In addition she is editor in chief of the school yearbook. Perri is the granddaughter of Marlene Goldstein, another longtime Connetquot teacher. Perri and Grant are outstanding individuals who truly merit the recognition given to them by the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association for 2013. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial concerns. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. Congratulations to Perri Goldstein, Grant Costa and their families, and continued success in your educational, and professional, pursuits!
PICKING FLOWERS FOR MOTHER’S DAY - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Association recently held its annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale. The plant sale was held in the school’s atrium where students were able to choose from a colorful array of flowers for the special women in their lives. The children were excited in anticipation of presenting their gifts to their leading ladies.
Mural Unveiled
On Monday, April 22nd, Connetquot School District Athletic Director Mark Dellecave unveiled an impressive, colorful, mural of the district’s magnificent ‘Thunderbird’ mascot which will be brighten up the AD’s office at the high school. Thomas Stocker, a 10th grade student in Ms. Karen Christensen’s Mural Painting class, spent more than 50 hours, on his own,
at home, to complete his project. Ms. Christensen said that at Mr. Dellecave’s request, Thomas “… completed his volunteer project in order to be inducted into the National Art Honor Society (NAHS).” One major prerequisite for membership in the NAHS is for each candidate to complete ‘an art-related volunteer project to enhance the school, or
local community’. Congratulations, and sincere thanks, to Tom Stocker for his outstanding Connetquot Thunderbird mural. Based on the smiles seen at the time of the unveiling, chances are pretty good that Thomas will be called upon again to submit even more ‘T-birds’ to enhance the ambiance the athletic offices.

Assemblyman Edward Hennessey was on hand to help celebrate PatchogueMedford School District’s Pride Night, a on openhouse showcase of students’ work and projects from all eleven schools in the school district. The evening opened with a formal agenda that included a musical performance from the All District Elementary Show Choir; student testimonials as to why they are proud to be Pat-Med students;
a welcome from Board of Education President Thomas Donofrio and a school montage video produced by Pat-Med District Clerk Dennis Logan. Also featured was the Patchogue-Medford FIRST Robotics Team 329, which took a number of prestigious awards at local and regional competitions sending the team to compete in the World Championship held in St. Louis.
“This was a wonderful night featuring Pat-Med students at their best. I enjoyed meeting them and getting a firsthand view of their work. Pat-Med really does have a lot to be proud of. And a special word of thanks to the school leaders for inviting me and welcoming me so warmly. It just doesn’t get any better than that. I am delighted to be the Assembly representative for this community,” said Assemblyman Hennessey.
Sayville had perfect weather for the second annual, Cherry-AvenuePTA sponsored, Bike-ToSchool Day. A great many of the students geared up and rode their bikes to school accompanied by their parents and friends. As part of the NationalSafe-Routes-to-School program, Bike-to-School Day has become another tradition at Cherry Avenue Elementary school.“Cherry has been participating in the Walkto-School programs for years,” PTA President Marisa Milo explained. “We were so excited when they launched the Biketo-School program last
year. Bike-to-School and Walk-to-School days are always popular at Cherry and a great collaboration between the PTA, Mrs. Fee (our physical education teacher), Dr. John Stimmel (our principal) and our community.” Practicing what was preached left a big impression on the students! “Dr. Stimmel, who has always fully supported these events at Cherry, spent the morning riding with students and greeting families,” Mrs. Milo continued. “The kids got a real kick of having their principal with his helmet and bicycle riding to
school alongside them. We also had the support of the SCPD’s fifth precinct COPE officers. They had police officers on bicycles and in cars helping to keep our riders safe and the morning running smoothly. And thanks to our Wellness Committee Chairperson, Jennifer Travaglia, who organizes these events on behalf of the PTA, Cherry also just won a new Saris Stadium bicycle rack from the National Center for Safe Routes to School program which we are hoping will arrive before our next Walk-to-School Day on June 5th.”

on Louisiana beaches in early September 2012 after Hurricane Isaac, the students were challenged to come up with ideas that could be instrumental in cleaning up future spills. Prior to their individual problem-solving work, the team discussed what happened when BP decided to pour chemicals into the Gulf to break up the oil, as well as some natural methods that have been
attempted. Additionally, the students explored the question “How long does it take pollution to go through sandy soil?” They experimented by testing the percolation rates of different soils as well as different substances. Through this activity, students gained an understanding of where something goes when it is poured onto the ground.
Angela’s House Golf Outing
GREAT COMMUNITY CLEANUP - The Town of Brookhaven’s Great Community Cleanup at St. Joseph the Worker Church, located on Narragansett Avenue in East Patchogue, was recently kicked off. Volunteers gathered for a full day of neighborhood cleanup with the promise of a barbeque after the work was done. Volunteers from the Medford Civic and Taxpayer Association and Medford residents then turned their cleanup efforts to Long Island Avenue and the Medford Train Station area.
Angela’s House plans to hold its annual golf outing at Indian Hills Country Club, located at 21 Breeze Hill Road in Northport, on June 10th to benefit the medically fragile children and families of Angela’s House. They will celebrate the construction of Angela’s House III being complete in Stony Brook.

In celebration of National Women’s Health Week and in recognition of the numerous scientific accomplishments achieved at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and beyond, a group of female scientists, Advancing Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM), hosted its 2nd Annual Awards Breakfast on May 17th. Scientists, educators, business and community leaders from the region attended the event to celebrate excellence and achievements of women in science. “Women face unique barriers to success and are less likely to seek recognition for their achievements,” said Christine Metz, PhD, investigator at the Feinstein Institute and president of AWSM. “AWSM promotes the cultivation of an environment where women who have a passion and talent for science excel, instead of being held back by stereotypes, and they are recognized for their excellence.” At the second annual awards breakfast, awards in scientific excellence, innovation, mentorship,

Laurie Glimcher, MD, the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss dean and professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and provost for Medical Affairs at Cornell University, also spoke at the event and was awarded the 2013 AWSM Award for Excellence. She was conferred this award due to her outstanding achievements in science and medicine, her strong leadership skills, and her commitment to advancing women’s careers.

Kya Banks, a tenth-grade student at PatchogueMedford High School, was recognized today as the Long Island regional winner of the Optimum Power To Learn Black History Month Double Victory essay contest that was held in conjunction with HISTORY. Kya read her awardwinning essay that focused on the legendary Tuskegee Airmen and was recognized by Town of Brookhaven Councilman
Timothy Mazzei. She was then presented with a computer tablet by Optimum Power to Learn representatives, Principal Randy Rusielewicz and Councilman Mazzei. English Teacher Karen Varacalli was also honored for encouraging student participation in the essay contest and received an iPad Mini. For decades, high school seniors have been feeling the pressure to succeed from all angles. Toward the middle of their final year of high school, many of these same students develop what is commonly known to be Senioritis. Senioritis can be defined as a general apathy toward school work as the result of continued exposure to stress, anxiety and pressure. What does this actually mean? Seniors basically stop caring about their courses! For nearly 100% of those students affected by the issue, Senioritis results in falling asleep during class. This nap-time results in detentions, failing and absences. All of the stress that comes with waiting for
your SAT score, applying to colleges and hoping for an acceptance letter seems to just fade into the background as the final months tick down. These last few months misleadingly seem to be a little downtime and a resting period between actual high school and college. After slapping their future college’s bumper sticker on their cars, many students feel that their struggle is over. These students have done it, they have completed their journey. Not quite; getting accepted is just the first half of the battle. You can’t let your grades slip! Some colleges create the stipulation that even if one’s Grade Point Average drops a single letter
grade; the acceptance will prove to be null, void and ultimately invalid. This continued expectation is harder still for those students that aced the SAT’s, assumed a loaded schedule and basically busted their humps their entire academic career. The temptation to slack is so great that even the most promising students have been known to fall. This pseudo-sickness has been even known to travel between groups of close friends, as many times the influence is drastic. So what does this mean for your future high school senior? Do not catch Senioritis! The only known cure for Senioritis is a phenomenon known as Graduation.
