First Place Award the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the MultiMedia/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by
Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their

dangers of antisemitism, racism, bullying and all other manifestations of intolerance, promoting resistance to prejudice and advocating respect for every human being. Usdan Center offers more than 40 programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology and chess, annually hosting more than 1,600 students from towns throughout the Tri-State New York area. No audition is needed for most courses, and transportation is provided in air-conditioned buses that depart from most New Yorkarea neighborhoods. One-third of Usdan’s students receive scholarship assistance based on family need. Creative and Performing Arts has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 TriState Area children since its founding in 1968. The Center is open to all young people from age 6 to 18. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the Boston Pops and the New York City Ballet. In addition to its regular programs, Usdan offers special opportunities for advanced high schoolage performing and visual artists. These include Music Staff Internships, a Summer Ballet Intensive. artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County is to teach the history of the Holocaust and its lessons, through education and community outreach. These include the

“Hope,” a multi-panelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of

On May 19th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Commissioner Ed Webber, Chief James Burke and several county legislators congratulated 54 graduates of the Suffolk County Police Academy at commencement exercises Monday at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. “You have chosen to invest your life in the career of public service as a Suffolk County Police Officer. You have decided to ensure public safety and put your life on the line for the greater good of Suffolk County. For that I applaud you and say thank you,” County Executive Steve Bellone said. The Scleroderma Foundation/Tri-State, Inc. Chapter will hold the 12th Annual Stepping Out To Cure Scleroderma Long Island walk in Wantagh Park on Sunday, June 1st. Registration and check-in start at 9 a.m. and the walk on the one mile course begins at 10:30 a.m. Join Long Island walk leaders Barbara Geller, Denise Gesuale and Dawn Selg, along with patients, families, and friends for an lively and fun event that raises money for support services and research. The walk helps bring awareness to scleroderma, an autoimmune disease that affects the body’s connective tissue - for which there is no known cause and no cure impacting an estimated 30,000 men, women, and children in the tri-state area. Food, raffles, and entertainment round out a great day in the park! Participants can register to walk or sponsor a walker online at http://walks.
S c l e r o d e r m a Tr i S t a t e . org before the event. The registration fee is $20 for participants 16 years and older, $5 for children ages 5 to 15, and children under five are free. Registration forms and donations can also be mailed to the Tri-State office. Day of event registration is $25 for participants 16 years and older. All pre-registered participants receive a T-shirt, and awards are given to the individual and team that raise the most money. The Long Island walk and area support groups are two means of helping people live with this mysterious and frequently disabling disease. June is Scleroderma Awareness Month, and includes the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma walks across the United States, and a website, www. sclerodermaawareness. org, that provides ideas to help supporters take action, such as snapping selfies to
be used in an upcoming campaign. There will also be an hourly presentation of a new awareness PSA on the CBS Digital Billboard on 42nd Street in New York City. The Scleroderma Foundation joins organizations around the world in recognizing June 29th as World Scleroderma Awareness Day. Pledging Support The John and Janet Kornreich Charitable Foundation has pledged $525,000 to Friends of Karen. The gift, commencing in 2014 and spread out over a five year period, will provide the resources needed to reach and help even more families across Long Island caring for a child with cancer or another lifethreatening illness. “Friends of Karen’s partnership with John and Janet will help strengthen our program by ensuring that no family will have to make this difficult journey alone,” said Nancy Mariano, Regional Director of organization that has assisted more than 13,000 children since 1978. “Their philanthropic kindness in our Long Island communities is a genuine testament to humanity.”

Connetquot Central School District’s (CCSD) Board of Education has announced the appointment of Lynda Adams as the new superintendent for the Connetquot Central School District. After a seven-month search, Adams was chosen based on stringent criteria and her over 20-years of experience in the public school sector. “Lynda Adams offers Connetquot over 20-years of experience in teaching and administrative positions, which makes her very adept at Long Island public school governance,” said CCSD
Board of Education President Lee Kennedy. “We are very proud to have Adams join the Connetquot family and believe she is the right candidate to uphold the school district standards and help achieve our objective to be among the best on Long Island.” Prior to joining CCSD, Adams served as the deputy superintendent for the Center Moriches Union Free School District, where she was responsible for overseeing curriculum, instruction, instructional technology, personnel, and professional development for the entire school

Still Missing The Meaning By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the first time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,
for most people, all that matters is that it qualifies as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s significance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family
decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.
From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team
that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

Every Woman Matters Nearly 5,000 walkers descended on Jones Beach on Sunday for the fifth annual Every Woman Matters Walk: A Walk For Women and Their Families hosted by the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Commerce and Industry Council. The walk benefits the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospitals,
specialty hospitals and programmatic initiatives that are transforming women’s healthcare. Alexa Tiven and her sister, Nicole Mancini, were among the participants. They were walking in memory of their mother, Dianne Tiven, who lost her battle with cancer. “This event is very important to us as sisters,
as aunts, as moms. Every woman matters!” said Alexa Tiven. Dr. Jennifer Mieres, senior vice president for the health system’s Office of Community and Public Health, addressed the crowd before the walk. “Women are the CEOs of their families and yet often times, they go without taking care of themselves,”
she told the crowd. “We need to educate ourselves about the differences in women’s health and understand that we are not the same as men, which is why the Katz Institute and Katz Women’s Hospitals are such vital assets to have in our community.” Superstorm Sandy compromised last year’s event with the closing of
the Jones Beach boardwalk, so this year’s walk was not only highly anticipated but celebrated. Walkers had an opportunity to visit the health and wellness showcase tent, enjoy entertainment provided by K98.3, grab a few snacks from the food and beverage tent and snap a few photos at the “flex station” at the end of our 5K Walk.

On Thursday, May 15th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held it’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore, NY. Over 100 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to two worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. Former Connetquot Superintendent John Maloney, and retired Connetquot Guidance Counselor Lorraine (Heinlen) Maloney attended this year’s luncheon. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased.” For 2014 the CRTA Scholarship Committee provided $1,000 grants to Emma Tess Gordon and Liam Manley for the upcoming school year. Current CRTA President Peter Leis, and former president Marilyn Aitken, congratulated the two recipients, both of whom are outstanding high school seniors, and have enrolled in college for the Fall of 2014. Emma Tess Gordon (Comsewogue HS, Port Jeff Station) is the granddaughter of retired Connetquot teacher Joseph Maniaci. Emma has earned a 3.8 GPA and is an active member of three national honor societies.
She also is enrolled in several Honors and Advanced Placement courses. Gordon is active in several school clubs, the student government and activities. Emma is the Treasurer for three clubs, and Historian for LEAP, the school’s Leadership organization. Gordon received a scholarship to attend the Robert W. Greene Summer Institute at Stony Brook University in the summer of 2013 to study multiple forms of journalism,
including print, media and photo. Emma owns her own photography business, recently earned an award at the Congressional Art competition, is completing work on her Girl Scout Gold Award, and is involved in her church youth group. Then he will transfer to Berklee College of Music in Boston to study music business and performance. He looks forward to becoming a professional session artist and performer. Emma and Liam are outstanding individuals who truly merit the recognition given to them by the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association for 2014. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. Showdown At Sayville
Parents, grandparents, siblings and friends were excited to attend the May 18th Connetquot Youth League (2nd grade) game against local rival Sayville at the Locust Avenue Islip Town field in Bohemia. The Connetquot T-Birds played their little hearts out against a talented, aggressive, and experienced team from Sayville. Despite the lopsided loss to their Sayville
neighbors, everyone was proud of the effort of the local boys this season. Spectators applauded the players and coaches from both teams for a spirited effort, in the last game of the season. This developmental program for lacrosse newcomers has brought together youngsters from throughout the Connetquot community, to learn the game, make

As part of Billy’s Eagle Scout project, he designed and crafted a new toy chest for the shelter to store dog toys. Thirty-six teams from 25 schools vied for a trip of a lifetime, but it was Liam Hofmeister and Sarah Walsh of team Apollo’s Suns who placed first. Upon hearing their names called and receiving congratulatory hugs from excited parents, the teens, filled with surprise and excitement, walked down the stairs of the Cradle of Aviation Dome Theater to collect their certificates. “Anyone could have gotten this, and I’m just
thankful that we did,” said Hofmeister, who learned of the competition from his mom when she was researching collegiate scholarship opportunities. “My mom told me, ‘Hey, this looks easy; just make a video,” said Hofmeister, “and it quickly became a 40-hour project...There were a couple of late nights working on this, but it was totally worth it,” said Hofmeister, son of Town of Islip Deputy Supervisor Eric Hofmeister. The participating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Staten Island,
University, Isby Lubin and Sam Zeif, who are participating at Solar Decathlon Europe 2014. Techstyle Haus, a collaboration between Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the University of Applied Sciences in Erfurt, Germany, opted to design and construct a Solar Decathlon home “like nothing you’ve ever seen before,” said Zeif. They hope to win in the area of innovation with their solar powered passive house made of five structural steel ribs, high-performance textile layers, and insulation, rather than solid walls. “This was by far the best learning experience I’ve ever had,” he added. David G. Schieren, CEO of EmPower Solar, also presented and spoke of the need to store energy, dramatically expand solar, and build a smarter electric grid. He emphasized that renewable energy will lead to cleaner water and air and ultimately, a more healthy, prosperous, and civil world. Schieren
challenged the students to join EmPower in this plan, Operation Solar Century, which will require collective engagement. “A small group of people can have a very big impact,” he said. “We can each have a transformative impact, and together we can very positively influence our society and the world.” Helping to develop these leaders and renewable energy advocates, he said, is why EmPower Solar hosts the annual student competition. Placing second in the competition was Team Green Track, hailing from Manhattan Comprehensive Night and Day High School. This team was made up of international students who emphasized in their video how solar would benefit their countries of origin. “For me, what I really appreciated was working with a diverse team...We have different ideas, we’re all from different countries. Sayville Junior Allison Murphy (Class of 2015) competed at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair which took place from May 10th-17th in Los Angeles, California at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Allison competed against 1,783 students from 72 nations. At the ISEF Awards Ceremony, Allison was one of six students who received a full fouryear scholarship($250,000) to Drexel University for her research project! Allison traveled as part of the Long Island Science & Engineering
Team. She competed in the Animal Sciences Division where she presented her authentic research which was conducted in Sayville High School’s Genetics Laboratory under the direction of her Sayville Research Teacher, Maria Brown. Allison’s research analyzed frozen tissue samples provided by Dr. Timothy Green from Brookhaven National Laboratory on the banded sunfish, one of 11 threatened species in New York State. Through mitochondrial DNA analysis, Allison was able to show that
individuals sampled from seven different ponds within the Peconic River system show high genetic diversity. This information is important for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to manage this species appropriately as they are only found on Long Island within the Peconic River system. Allison is currently working on the next phase of her research in collaboration with NYSDEC to help them revise the Species Management Plan which is due in October.
On May 17th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Dan Panico attended the Court of Honor ceremony for Shawn Williams from Boy Scout Troop 47 in Patchogue. At the event, the Supervisor presented a proclamation to Shawn in
recognition of attaining the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle project, Shawn designed and constructed seating for the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge for visitors to view the Carmans River. Also pictured is Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco. Since the award was
presented in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men.
