ighteen Academy Street Elementary School students will represent their hometown and showcase their athleticism during this year’s MLB Pitch, Hit and Run sectional competition in late May. IT ALL STARTS WITH A SEED

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

Scholarships Awarded On Tuesday, May 12th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to five worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased Current CRTA President Peter Leis, and former president Marilyn Aitken, congratulated the recipients and their families: Max Green maintains a 4.0 high school GPA. He is involved in many extracurricular activities including DECA, Varsity Tennis, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He has also earned two Business Achievement awards. Max holds the rank of Boy Scout, First Class, and will attend the University of Connecticut in the Fall. Bridgit Murray is graduating with an unweighted 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National, Spanish,

English, History and Science Honor Societies. She is the Treasurer of the American Sign Language Club, and founding member of the school’s TV and Studio Media Club. She plans to major in Elementary Education. Lauren O’Mara has maintained a 4.0 GPA through high school, has been on high honor roll for every quarter. She also serves as gymnastics coach in Garden City, and

tutors elementary students for whom English is not their first language. She has been a lifeguard for several summers and a Teacher’s Assistant at Dance Camp. She plans to major in Biomedical Englineering in college. Justin Summers will graduate with a cumulative GPA of 4.04, ranked 13th in his class. He has completed

six AP courses and founded the Young Politicians Club at school, to replace the Young Democrats, and Young Republican Clubs. Outside the classroom he devotes most of his time to swimming, and hopes to qualify for NCAA Championships next year as a student-athlete at Georgetown University. Stephanie Voegele is married, raising three children, having graduated from St. Joseph’s College, and is currently working on her Master’s degree. After graduating from high school Stephanie went on to serve four years in the U.S. Navy, and would later earn four teaching certifications: Early Childhood, Childhood, Students With Disabilities, Early Childhood and Students With Disabilities, Childhood. She currently attends Long Island University. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. Congratulations to Max Green, Bridgit Murray, Lauren O’Mara, Justin Summers and Stephanie Voegele and their families, and continued success in your educational, and professional, pursuits!

An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Scholarship Awards Ceremony On Monday evening, May 18th, Mr. Tony Felicio, Jr, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the organization’s annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Felicio and CTA committee members, welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500. Felicio said “… on behalf of the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association, I would like to express how proud we are of our teachers for being chosen by former students as the teacher who has made a positive difference in their lives. I would also like to congratulate the students and their parents for their commitment and dedication toward academic excellence.” The topic of the essay was The Teacher Who Made a Difference in my Life; the teachers themselves were humbled by the students’ kind words. Over 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the

following Connetquot students were selected as the six winning entries: Elaina Batista (Mr. Michael Murphy), Jonathan Forberg (Mrs. Laurie Schwartz), Lawrence Brett (Mrs. Rosemary Riegger), Steven Crescenti (Mrs. Eileen McGinnis), and Katlyn Boodram (Ms. Jennifer

awards for graduating Connetquot students. The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. The New York State United Teachers Association has recognized the CTA with the prestigious NYSUT community Service Award. Mr. Felicio and CTA Vice President Mr. Chris Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families, for submitting quality essays. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot’s professional educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized, and brought at least one of them to tears. BBP Gives Back the BULA organization she founded while still studying at BBP high school. From there, the students completed more than hours of service at one of 10 different stations. Activities included such things as making sandwiches for a local homeless shelter, repurposing recyclable

materials to create an inspired sign for the high school and flowerbeds for the surrounding grounds, performing a musical concert for the elderly and providing lunch for the attendees, and working with students who have developmental disabilities.

Family & Children’s Association (FCA), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest human service agencies, is inviting Long Islanders to support their annual Summer Camp Appeal. For many families, the summer means free time, trips and camp for the kids. EMS Agency of the Year The Community Ambulance Company of Sayville, NY has been named 2014 EMS Agency of the Year by the Suffolk Regional EMS Council (REMSCO). Community Ambulance members, Laura Lopreto and Jennifer Hartmann, received Basic Life Support Provider of the Year and Advanced Life Support Provider of the Year, respectively. The criteria for EMS Agency of the Year states that to win the award, an agency must “strive for consistency in EMS excellence and exhibit exemplary performance when providing prehospital emergency medical care.” Community Ambulance met all of these qualifications in 2014 and receiving this award is a great honor to the company. They opened a new headquarters centrally located in their district to shorten average response times. The new facility allows the company to expand its training program to include BLS and ALS level courses as well as CPR for the general public. In the summer months, Community Ambulance initiated the EMS program for the Fire Island Community of Cherry Grove with 24 hour Advanced Life Support. This success of this program continues into this year. Community

Ambulance faced a record number of new applicants and ended the last two months of the year without calling for mutual aid which has continued to this day. Laura Lopreto has committed herself to serving others for over thirty years as both a member of Community Ambulance and a Suffolk County Police Officer. She is the true epitome of a dedicated volunteer. After her retirement from the Police Department, Laura began giving more time and energy to the company. She is a member of several committees and single-handedly coordinated the move into the new headquarters. She is always relied upon to be present for her weekly duty shift as well as answer from home when needed. Laura is a truly selfless person and this award is a small reflection of her dedication to helping others. Jennifer Hartmann joined Community Ambulance in 2010 and has quickly moved up the ranks from EMTBasic to EMT-Critical Care and is currently working on her Paramedic certification. Jennifer serves as Captain of the company while directing several committees including the Probationary Membership and Youth Squad Programs. Jennifer is a part of the Cherry Grove EMS program where, last year, she recognized and

On Saturday, May 16th, the men and women of Community Ambulance Company in Sayville hosted a CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) class for the Cherry Grove community on Fire Island. The class was held as an early kickstart to the summer season and to

celebrate the continued relationship between Community Ambulance and the Cherry Grove community. The class was a huge success as over 70 residents of Cherry Grove are now certified in the administration of CPR and the use of AED devices. Community Ambulance

Summer Portfolio Program The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists. The Summer Portfolio Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences,

such as mock portfolio reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school

art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding outcomes. The Art League of Long Island will be offering a Scholarship for a $630 tuition voucher toward session one or two of Summer Portfolio Development 2015. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the
